    Review

Given the current trend for house productions inspired by the late 80s/early 90s New York house sound, it's perhaps surprising that there haven't been many compilations looking back at the pioneering releases of the city's legendary Nu Groove label. This unmixed collection from nu-school slo-mo disco/house producer Nicholas fills that gap, offering a personal selection of favourites from the label's archives. As selections go, it's pretty hot, largely sidestepping well-known cuts in favour of forgotten gems and rarities. As a result, it should be an essential purchase for anyone with at least a passing interest in the development of deep house and US garage. Besides, Basil Hardhaus 2's super-deep "Black Man" is almost worth the admission price alone.
