Le Rok is a project from German producer Christoph Dohne. "Approx Twelve" is his second album for the Karaoke Kalk label. On "Approx Twelve" Dohne has managed to construct something even more dynamic than his previous release, "Hausarbeiten". This is electronic music, first and foremost - but while Dohne has the production prowess of the best electronica has to offer, he never lets the production dictate the music. Although his tracks contain hiccups, glitches and other such digital artefacts, they are at the core pounding dance tracks which would be most at home on a sweaty dancefloor. Slinky synthesizer lines are layered rudely over popping bass and pulsating percussion, yet unlike so much 'dance music' Dohne retains a melodic core which distances his music from so much else in the scene. Just skip to the mischievous "Choped Ride", you instantly hear the digital trickery suggested in the title yet there's something more daring and more fun-loving in there too - imagine if Prefuse 73 was making house music and you might have some idea where Le Rok is on the musical spectrum. A daring and unique statement from a remarkable artist, "Approx Twelve" shows that there's more life yet in the ailing electronic music scene, and that Le Rok isn't afraid to get the party started!
