Although it would be spectacularly impressive if Germany's Areal Records had been going for 100 years, they're actually only 12 years old. Still, that's an eternity in record label terms, so they've decided to celebrate it style, offering up a disc of unmixed cuts from the archives. Their style has shifted dramatically over the years, variously touching on bouncy deep house (see Undo's gorgeous "Love What You Do"), melodic hypnotism (the "Field does E" bizniz of Schlepstigg), warm techno (the gorgeous bliss of Pan/Tone), jumpy dancefloor anthems (the off-kilter "Son of a Gun" by Andreas Henneberg) and tough, percussive workouts (Falko Brocksieper). It all adds up to an entertaining, offbeat journey through emotion-rich electronic music.
