  1. Jui Ju (6:35)
  2. Life Of Veggies (6:31)
  3. Pantanao (6:30)
  4. Dark Side Of The Loop (6:48)
Review: Since first popping their heads above the parapet back in 2012, the mysterious Birdsmakingmachine collective has delivered some of the most interesting music the minimal techno and micro-house scenes have heard in years. This ninth self-titled 12" release begins with a heartfelt tribute to the loopy, tech-tinged deep house pulse of Germany's legendary Playhouse label (the Isolee-with-extra-balls shuffle of "Jui Ju"), before dropping some eccentric, jazz-propelled, swing-time shuffle via the tasty "Life of Veggies". Switch to the B for the beat-box electro-meets-tech-house pulse of "Pantanao", and the wonky, undulating, bass-heavy late night bounce of "Dark Side Of The Loop" (think Rob Mello dragged through a ditch backwards, and you're close).

  1. Green (Argy Floor Adaptation) (5:39)
  2. Eternal Aspects (Argy edit) (6:44)
  3. Squeezed (Argy Stripped edit) (6:55)
  4. Subbass (Argy extended) (5:23)
Review: Argy's These Days label is an occasional treat in the world of stripped down tech house, and it makes its first appearance for 2016 with a selection of club-ready remixes from the label boss, tackling various productions from German techno mainstay Paul Brtschitsch. The "Floor Adaptation" of "Green" heads into subterranean pastures, albeit with a powerful beat propelling it, and "Eternal Aspects" maintains that underground mood with a warmer synth repertoire. On the more flamboyant B-side, "Squeezed" takes on a wild old-skool quality perfect for more fiery moments on the floor before "Subbass" continues the jacking theme in fine style.

  1. Connecting With The Lama (7:08)

  3. Finally I've Met You (6:13)
  4. Given Brain (8:11)
Review: Sicilian producer Toto Chiavetta returns after some great releases on the likes of Yoruba and Ibadan. Appearing on labels like such, you'd think hi-tech soul would be his forte; quite fitting then that he appears here for top merchants of the sound: Innervisions. On "Connecting With The Lama" we hear his penchant for futurist Afro vibes, while the title track explores suspenseful, deep house journeys much like label bosses Ame have done over the years. "Finally I've Met You" is a lush deep techno journey featuring steel texture atmospheres, complex polyrhythms and rich uplifting melodies, while "Given Brain" goes for something much darker and mysterious with its rusty rhythms and EBM style arpeggio.

Mind Over (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: EEDV 008. Rel: 28 Nov 16
  1. Mind Over (7:00)
  2. Inwards (7:14)
Review: East End Dubs' output is strong and consistent. In addition to running this successful eponymous imprint, he also runs the great Eastenderz label where he pursues the more rolling and hypnotic grooves of the Romanian scene. This is demonstrated on releases by the likes of Priku, Lizz and Nami. Here the London based producer focuses solely on his own work and pursues his first love of tough and functional house grooves; just take a listen to the dubby deepness of "Mind Over" where a swing fuelled rhythm and short vocal loops remind you of NYC attitude by legends like Kerri Chandler or Mr V. On the flip, we've got the equally functional groove of "Inwards" which rolls along with its tough drums assisted by woozy pads and an infectious yet restrained melody.

Ascendance (100 gram vinyl 10")
Cat: CMD 004. Rel: 28 Nov 16
  1. Heal (8:29)
  2. Plight (8:27)
Review: From his appearances on Aesthetic Audio and Ornate through to his own Atmospheric Existence label, Miles Sagnia continues to be one of the best kept secrets of British deep techno, and that's no more apparent than on this stunning release for Common Dreams. There's a looped up insistence to "Heal", but it's offset by emotive movement in the synth lines and an overall spiritual quality that escapes much cyclical techno. "Plight" takes a slightly slower path, amping up the early UK electronica tones for an immersive experience shaped out by interlocking rhythms and snaking melodies. It's a truly classy statement that stays true to techno while saying something original.

  1. Static (6:05)
  2. Utkall (7:38)
  3. Sedna (5:26)
  4. Timelaps (5:11)
Review: The much celebrated return of Thule continues to yield high grade delights from the frosty plains of Icelandic dub techno, this time heralding the return of the mighty Octal Industries who pair up with Ohm for a masterclass in immersive, expressive trips to the outer reaches. The particular twist on classic dub techno to be found on this record feels both familiar and utterly original at the same time, rich with subtle detail and yet still cavernous in its execution. There's a housey lurch beating away in "Utkall", while "Sedna" creeps along in a predatory fashion, but all four tracks are bound together by a fine selection of misty atmospherics.

  1. Onur Ozer - "Hcore"
  2. Etienne - "Ruhso"
  3. Yoshi & Saverio Celestri - "Revolt"
Review: Libertine Records loves a good collaboration. All of the label's releases to date have either been multi-artist affairs, or contained tracks that bring together a numerous members of their production roster. They've opted to follow the same blueprint on Libertine 004. They begin with the weirdo-Italo/lo-fi EBM/dusty analogue techno thrust of Onur's "Hcore", before allowing Etienne the chance to combine speaker-shaking bass, bleep style electronics and hustling house rhythms on the impressive "Ruhso". Finally, regular collaborators Yoshi and Saverio Celestri join forces once more on "Revolt", a suitably rough-and-ready fusion of bustling drum machine hits, winding synth melodies and semi-discordant electronic noises.

  1. Lonely Wolf (9:34)
  2. Father (5:32)
  3. The Logical Question To Come Is Yet To Be Defined (feat Debashis Sinha) (16:19)
Review: Canadian minimal standard-bearer Pheek is the fifth artist to sign up for The Untold Stories Protagonist series, and he's packing some of the crispest grooves he's laid down in some time. "Lonely Wolf" is everything a minimal house track should be, with a crackling, shuffling beat and layers of subtle orchestration building into a soul-stirring groover. "Father" however takes a more abstract route into off-kilter percussion and exotic found sounds specifically arranged to tickle the mind. That leaves it to "The Logical Question To Come Is Yet To Be Defined" to dominate the B-side in a 16-minute trip that moves through all manner of moods and moments.

  1. Smile (8:52)
  2. Smile (The Mole MMD remix) (7:02)
Review: Transmitting out of Birmingham and representing the cream of the sleek tech house crop, Adam Shelton's One Records continues to forge valuable connections with the global scene while staying true to the label's roots. Shaun Reeves and Tuccillo have been doing their thing for long enough to know how to throw down a surefooted deep groover, and that's just what you get with "Smile". Meanwhile The Mole does a sterling job of working some complex percussion into the bones of the track and creating a hypnotic, understated version that will appeal to the freakier end of the floor.

  1. Track 1 (6:51)
  2. Transmission (4:27)
Review: Having paused for a breather following the release of the deliciously rugged and bass-heavy Modern Warfare album on XL Recordings, Paul Woolford once again dons the Special Request guise for further adventures in retro-futurist bass music. "Track 1" sees the Leeds producer tone down the hardcore and jungle influences of old, instead dropping a pirate radio-friendly two-step garage excursion full of thrusting, speed garage-era sub-bass wobbles, and typically soulful vocal samples. Flipside "Transmission" is an altogether more sedate, beat-less interpretation of the same track, with Woolford smothering the original's weighty, pulsing bassline in shimmering strings and ambient chords.

  4. Know How It Feels (5:25)
Review: Following choice wares from tape_hiss and Pascal Viscardi, Love Notes stride into winter with a fulsome offering from lesser-known artist Subtenant, who packs just the right balance of classic acid and modernist techno into the three original tracks on this 12". "Evergreen Soul" looks set to turn heads in the club with its playful organ flex hopping around the punchy 303 notes, while "Artisanal Acid" brings some homespun hardware handiwork to the table. "Know How It Feels" drops in at a slower tempo, but it's D'Marc Cantu who steals the show with a dynamic remix of the title track loaded with detail and shot through with dub.

Review: The Dutch techno hero Joris Voorn returns with another fine escapade on his always reliable Green: the imprint which he's run with Edwin Oosterwal since 2005. Expect quality hi-tech soul as always by the master producer on "Esquape" displayed in exemplary fashion on this ultra uplifting journey and its numerous peaks and flows: all allowing for a euphoric dancefloor journey. On the flip, he offers up "Orange" which is a much mellower affair, jam packed with rich melodies, lush pads/sound design and immaculately programmed beats to keep your feet moving while it allows your mind to wander, far away.

Review: Moscow's Isaiah Tapes are also the guys behind the great Baptismo Alpinismo and Longlife Python sub labels, which are doing great things at the moment. Next up for the label is Charles Torris aka Le Matin, who after a bunch cassette only releases over the past few years releases his first full length. The LP album's six tracks and accompanying bonus CD traverse the galaxy of lowdown smack electro; reminiscent of Dopplereffekt like on "Ma Voisine La Pute" or "Yeah", wacky modular synth improvisation as heard on the charmingly titled "Cat Vomit" or deeply sublime minimal techno as heard on "M05 Michel Platini". Brilliant album from start to finish. Tip!
