Review: Here's a pleasant surprise! Jimmy Billingham bringing his distinct brand of drawn out, emotive acid as HOLOVR to the good ship Firecracker. HOLOVR has largely been restricted to the digital or cassette format, yet last year's Line Of Flight LP for Billingham's own Indole label proved what we always thought; it's music you want to hear booming out of a pair of turntables in a club! The Trace Realm EP, another thing of visual beauty thanks to House of Traps, continues in this vein with opening track "Transient Field" a real highlight along with the spoken word-blessed lysergic drift of closing track "Corporeal Crust (Cthelll Core)".

Review: Stephane Laporte's Fourrure Sounds, released to critical acclaim back in 2014, was something of a lo-fi triumph. Recorded entirely at night, with a variety of old analogue synths and a battered old tape recorder, it saw the Domotic producer pay tribute to experimental French electronic music of the 1970s. This follow-up is almost as good, with Laporte drifting between throbbing, percussive fare (see "Dispositions"), Black Zone Myth Chant style madness ("Ossature"), fine cosmic workouts ("Tunnel"), and blissful, new age-inspired ambient concoctions ("Timre"). It's arguably a little more expansive in scope than its' predecessor, but no less entertaining for it. In fact, it's another must-check record from Antinote.

Review: Steven Porter: easily the funniest alias we've heard in a long time. No, people; this ain't the American, early noughties progressive house legend who once famously described his style of music as 'Porterhouse'. In all seriousness: this is the collaborative project of Japanese artists Yuji Kondo and Katsunori Sawa who have appeared previously with their extreme noise terror for the likes of DJ Nobu's Bitta and Berlin's Weevil Neighbourhood. On the Superbad EP they give us the bleak body bashing industrial textures of "Dwell In Hell" and the Sunn O))) sounding black metal guitar drone of "Wild Pitch". Elsewhere, the brutal futurist extremism of "Ignorance Reins" calls to mind classic British Murder Boys.

Review: Whilst the album format has caused countless electronic artists issues, its clear Stroboscopic Artefacts boss Luca Mortadella doesn't feel stricken by such problems. Self-Mythology is the third Lucy album in five years and finds the Italian producer drawing ever deeper into his own world of atmosphere-laden electronics. Described as "a meditation upon the reciprocity between personal hopes and fears and collective dreams and nightmares," the album's nine tracks find Lucy's percussive streaks, complex polyrhythms and patterned ambience reach for new heights and calls to mind the Tryptych-era work of Demdike Stare at times. A real album to sink in, drink up and swim around in for several hours.

Review: Just the fact that the Shahr Farag imprint is from Iran is enough to grab our attention. This is both because it feels like a novelty to the scene, but also because that vast majority of arts that come out of the country are always so interesting. This time, label owners Lenta and Ahu are joined by Romanian minimal expert Vlad Caia, who serves an excellent, Eastern-minded quasi-dance rhythm in "Declination", and a purely abstract barrack of drones and low frequencies on "Neptune". Lenta himself drops a fuzzy wash of sounds and disparate beats through "Your Existence", while Ahu's "Blind By The Sun" has something in common with dub-techno, except that here the sounds that flutter up and down are grainy and imperceptible...and wholly wonderful. Tip!

Review: A Colourful Storm inaugurates its vinyl label with a reissue of a long lost Oz classic. Formed by Brian Hall in 1982, Denial originally appeared on the legendary M Squared label, home to industrial and wave outfits Systematics, SPK, Scattered Order and The Makers Of The Dead Travel Fast. Until now, Hall's own work has only surfaced once - in 2012, under his Aural Indifference moniker on the Minimal Wave Tapes Volume Two compilation. Here, Denial's version of the Mamas and Papas' classic, and melancholy The Weatherman are presented in their original format and deservedly remastered. A Colourful Storm is a label co-run by Moopie, who contributed the second mix CD for Silent Servant's Jealous God imprint.

Review: Matt Didemus and Jeremy Greenspan are back with their first album in five years for City Slang entitled Big Black Coat and this is the remix of the title track issued through Dan Snaith's Jiaolong label. The "Album Version" itself is a sublime and infectious serving of modern synthpop done like only this Canadian duo can. The "Robert Hood Remix" (yes, you've read that correctly!) is definitely the most fierce and club ready rendition the duo have shown us since Marcel Dettmann's terrific remix of "Work" from 2009's Begone Dull Care LP. Mr. Hood's pounding and cyclical hypnotism is unmistakeable as always and he's in fine form here.

Review: The breadth of Piero Umiliani reissues over the last few years has been nothing short of spectacular. Once the current scene was exposed to the late artist's wide-reaching catalogue, different labels have flooded in to resurface his best work - which all sounds far ahead of its time. This, Il Mondo Dei Romani, is perhaps the most interesting of his reissues yet, but not only for its music. This is a soundtrack to a '70s documentary that Umiliani made about Ancient Rome, so not only do you get incredible avant-garde music, but also an interesting setting or story to attach to it. Umiliani's ingenious balance between futurism and classicism is just perfect, and while there is always something very stable at the core of his tracks, the artist had a way of introducing new and strange sounds that just makes sense. Although we recommend you o listen to all of his work, this one might well be our favourite yet.
