  3. I Feel It In My Forehead
Review: Living up to his most recognised name with every release, LA producer Gifted & Blessed joins the Eglo family with a quite excellent EP under the lesser spotted Abstract Eye moniker. This name was last used by Reyes-Whittaker on the Cool Warm Divine EP for the Valentine Connexion imprint, a release that impressed the Juno review crew despite the fact the Abstract Eye identity was under wraps at the time. The rich analogue techno explorations dipped in glowering warmth and soul that ran through that release are present and correct on Whittaker's Eglo debut, especially the opening track "Analogous". Commencing with a neck snapping percussive flex, it doesn't take long for the track to get consumed by flourishes of rich analogue texture and undercurrents of fuzzed out bass. Alongside this "Grandfather Fire" floats in more pensive strains of machine made funk, gradually unfurling into intricately layered bursts of kaleidoscopic colour that retain a certain restraint throughout. Whittaker reserves the best till last however, with "I Feel It In My Forehead" making full space of the B Side expanse for a gloriously paced sojourn through sumptuous electronic soul.

Review: Eclectic Belgian label Meakusma serve up more strange delights that they're fast becoming known for. Georgia are Brian Close and Justin Tripp who work out of their studio in Chinatown, NYC. They released the album Like Comments earlier this year and Like Comment Comments, naturally, is the remix-driven accompaniment. There are some truly inventive takes featured here by a stellar cast. DFA's Bryce Hackford serves up a nice deep house revision of "Nu Way Heat", NYC's RVNG INT'L deliver a harsh and hard hitting digi dub chugger on the remix of "Abstrackt High" plus two new tracks by Georgia themselves. "Bridge 1" and "Bridge 2" continue on with their oddball cinematic vibes as heard on the album and perfect for those chill out moments.

  3. The Durian Brothers - "Mathemanique" (6:49)
  4. The Durian Brothers - "Flustertute" (5:34)
Review: The Diskant label has been among our favourites over the last three years and its boss men, The Durian Brothers, are without doubt some of the most interesting producers alive right now. This is because they play with the genre, they merely use it as a base for their tribalistic rhythms to grow and land on different, much more cinematic territories. This time, side A is helmed by like-minded producer High Wolf, who delivers a nutty, tropical kind of waver on "ARA13", and an even more tripped-out set of jungle hypnotics through "Theorem 86". The Brothers jump in on the flip with the gloriously dubby and steely rhythm of "Mathematique" - the sure winner on here - and the more broken, more abstract pile of drums and hollow bass that makes up "Flustertute". Excellent, as always.

  3. Throwing Shade - "Dream Scene" (3:27)
Review: According to Beating Heart, Hugh Tracey made several thousand field recordings across Sub-Saharan Africa between the 1920s and 1970s. His intention was to 'reveal the beauty and complexity of the music to a world that saw little value in it.' Fast forward to the present day, Tracey's bid to preserve the music of Africa for future generations lives on. Beating Heart has shared the late Tracey's archive at the International Library of African Music (ILAM) with contemporary producers and keeping in line with Tracey's vision, all proceeds will be used to assist people in the areas where the music was originally recorded. London's Throwing Shade, fresh of a great release for Ninja Tune turns in the vivid and polyrhythmic 'Dream Scene", Hotflush's Machinedrum gives us the intense polyrhythmic Sub Saharan trance induction of "Lewasi" while Ibibio Sound Machine gives us the soul-funk boogie of "Amai Ndiwulule".

  4. Trevor Deep Jr - "T To Da P"
Review: Spanish deep house label Troubled Kids celebrate their 10th release with a various artist EP featuring music from Rush Hour and Neroli act Ricardo Miranda, French producer Life Recorder, Delsin house head Trevor Deep Jr. and label reps Jesus Gonsev & The Troubled Kids Gang. Waves of synths, Chicago bass and snappy snares control Miranda's busy "Polysynthetic Jungle", while The Troubled Kids Gang opt for looped Rhodes and a streamlined arrangement in "Neon Nights". Life Recorder stays deep and piano driven with "Winter Feeling", which transitions into Trevor Deep Jr.'s "T To Da P"; something moodier with a percussive skip. Four solid cuts of deeper, Chicago inspired house.

Review: It's been some six years since Caroline "Miss Kittin" Herve and Michel "The Hacker" Amato last delivered fresh material together. While we await further news of their long-mooted comeback, there's this tasty EP of previously unheard archive material to enjoy. Made up of tracks recorded between 1997 and '99 - when their production partnership was in its' infancy - The Lost Tracks Volume 1 contains a number of fuzzy, stylish, floor-friendly bangers, from the S&M-themed madness of opener "Leather Forever" and stripped-back electro gem "Nightlife" (a tribute to Berlin clubs of the period, apparently), to the high-tempo acid-loaded freakishness of "Loving The Alien". Top-notch sleaze.

Review: The last time that Marcello Napoletano flew this far off the radar was on Jamal Moss Mathematics label back in 2012. Now the follow up release comes on another outsider label, Berceuse Heorique and again, Napoletano treats the listener to another freeform selection. While the Italian producer's house grooves have always been unconventional, going all the way back to Listen In Dreaming, this is in a whole different realm of weirdness. "Introspettivo" kick starts the release with doubled up beats and mad percussive whirrs and clicks and deranged cowbells. "New Old Think" goes in a jazzy direction with sax squalls fused with Patrick Pulsinger-style atmospherics and "Sunplasemood" ends the release with dubbed out beats and space invader bleeps.

  2. Gerry & The Holograms - "Gerry & The Holograms" (JD Twitch edit) (4:46)
  3. The Klinik - "Moving Hands" (Helena Hauff remix) (3:46)
  4. Kubler Ross - "Victims Of Victimless Crimes" (John Bender cover version) (4:17)
Review: Well, you can't really beat The Vinyl Factory in terms of its diversity of output, especially when they get some of the most interesting and current techno artists to remix EBM material from the 1980s. The So-Low compilation has been one of this year's best releases by a mile, a collection of hard-to-find gems from the likes of Colin Potter, Hard Corps, and many more, but we were utterly gobsmacked when we heard who was reinterpreting this gold. First up, Diagonal's lanky Powell transforms P/1e's "49 Second Romance" into a bubbly gunshot of a tune that keeps the original's vocals intact amid the gargles and jagged percussion stabs, and this killer is followed by JD Twitch's wondrous edit of "Gerry & The Holograms" by "Gerry & The Holograms". The ace Helena Hauff reshuffles The Klinik's "Moving Hands" into a deranged, synth-heavy techno swarmer, and John Blender gives us a cover version of "Victims Of Victimless Crimes" by Kubler Ross, a visionary remix that wraps up this total belter of an EP. Totally and wholeheartedly recommended!!

  1. Tujurikkuja - "Omerta" (live) (10:51)
  2. Rrose - "Omerta" (version) (7:16)
Review: The arrival of a new release on Eaux sees Rrose break with tradition, seeking out the self-quipped "ambient nihilism" of Tujurikkuja, aka California duo Kit Clayton and Chris Dixon. Separately both artists have rich histories in the West Coast underground to dig through (fun fact: Clayton worked with Juan Mendez on the late '90s Cytrax label) but their joint output as Tujurikkuja is restricted to a pair of releases on San Francisco label Computer Music. Omerta sees Clayton and Dixon turn in a titular analogue improvisation that fans of extended abstract electronic pioneers like Dilloway will delight in. It's been pressed at 45rpm but Eaux recommend listeners approach at 33rpm! Rrose offers a version on the flip that is more appropriate for dancefloor deployment.

Review:  Returning to R&S for another bout of nail-biting techno propulsion, Paula Temple is in no mood to take it easy on Deathvox. The title track bucks and jerks like a goliath in restraints, the juggernaut rhythm bolstered by the kind of demonic synth wails that made AFX's "Elephant Song" such an effective nightmare vision. "Monstro" may come on in more melodic tones, but the intro is equally a ruse for a tough industrial piston pump of drums and distortion has handled by a professional. It's on "Ful" that Temple really allows you to catch your breath with a more evenly tempered rhythm section and broad sweeps of synth that call to mind the melancholy of early Autechre.

Review: FaltyDL's Blueberry label covers a whole spectrum of electronic dance music, and with each new release comes a surprise in one way or another; whether it be glitchy post-drum & bass, or silky deep house, and forward-thinking bass cocktails, quality is never an issue that we're concerned with. This time we have newcomer Tenant liven up the place with six bursts of bass experimentation, and from the utterly bonkers jungle patterns of "Remote Lover", to the minimal electronica of "Unison Yellow", or noisy drum thrashing of "Lunar Gymnast", you will certainly not be bored by the both the originality and diversity of these daring pieces of dance futurism. Sickness throughout.

Review: Life & Death's head honcho DJ Tennis serves up some brooding, pop inflected deep house for main room madness on "Divisions" featuring the rich vocals of Jeppe Kjellberg of Danish pop-tronica trio Whomadewho; expect to be hearing a lot of this one this year! We've also the more straight ahead, dark melodic journey track executed in the way that only a Life & Death record can be on "Chirality" featuring some intense atmosphere provided by Sophie Trudeau's (Godspeed You Black Emperor!) string orchestra direction. "Divisions" gets an equally dark and mysterious remix, full of rich synth leads and bleepiness by Frankfurt master Roman Flugel and "Chirality" gets an epic makeover by experimental electronica legends Plaid, which is equally worthy of your attention.

  1. 28th October 2014 (15:09)
  2. 8th August 2014 (20:21)
Review: Nico Jaar is evidently enjoying juggling his own creative urges with the responsibilities of running Other People, with the label's latest transmission a most daring experiment indeed. Under the banner Terepa, NHK'Koyxen called on Rashad Becker, Laurel Halo, Julia Holter, Charlotte Collin, Lucrecia Dalt and Gregoire Simon to join him in an international improvised recording session. These two 20 minute sessions were conducted without any form of communication with the results layered and mixed by NHK'Koyxen into the two pieces presented here. Despite the number of people involved there is a remarkable serenity to opening composition "28th October 2014" whilst "8th August 2014" is more redolent of the abstract noise one expects when Becker and NHK'Koyxen are involved. A most interesting sonic endeavour.

Review: Von Tesla aka Marco Giotto returns to Chevel's Enklav imprint with a new collection of glitchy, wide-eyed sonic sculptures. Hard ambient is the one way to describe these four tracks, where docile pads and airy drones collide with harsh wisps of noise and synthesized percussion. "City Lights", for example, assembles a groove out of jarring synth keys and would make a fine addition to any house or techno record being played. You'll need three decks, tough!

Review: After the absolute devastation of Nancy's Pantry it's all eyes on Tessela to see how he follows up that particular monster of a release on R&S. The chances are if you've been on a dancefloor commanded by one of the edgier bass-orientated spinners of late you will have heard "Rough 2" laying waste with its killer staggered snare hook, lurid synth line and bludgeoning bass thrusts. "Butchwax" takes a less pronounced approach with a jagged approach to sample triggering that calls to mind Art Of Noise, and then "C'mon Let's Slow Dance" weirds the whole EP out with some fringe electronics that try desperately to cling on to a beat.

Review: Tommy Four Seven and Alain continue their project as These Hidden Hands with a new bullet of high-powered industrial techno for their own Hidden Hundred label. "SZ31X71" is a slow builder, but once the folds of noise and distortion reach a climax it's all fury and vengeance from these two: metallic bursts of drums collide with an electrifying ensemble of synths that have been stripped right down to their essentials. Master technician and electronic visionary Roly Porter gives his own interpretation of the tune and, as you'd expect from the man, it's an aptly apocalyptic take on the original, a remix that perhaps goes even beyond the original by adding an extra layer of doom. Excellent.

Review: This Morn Omina provides the prolific Gooiland Elektro label with an impressive tenth 12" of the year. It's TMO's first release since the L'Unification Des Forces Opposantes album of 2011, but it's a four-track EP that sounds like it came straight from the mid-to-late-'80s. A high octane "Epoch (ccf)" opens proceedings with industrial rave-beats and Skinny Puppy-like vocals, while "(The) Ninth Key (ccf)" pounds down heavy like an early Regis production - paired with Karl O'Conner's vocals similar to what we heard on the excellent White Savage Dance 12". The B-side of "The Immutable Sphere (ccf)" would nestle neatly into a Terence Fixmer DJ set thanks to its Front 242 styled aggression, while "Obeah" features the frenetic drums and flusters of random instrumentation reminiscent of an early Liam Howlett production for The Prodigy. For EBM enthusiast this is a no brainer.

Review:  Something just feels right about Throwing Shade landing on the mighty Ninja Tune. The Londoner's music is free-spirited, vibrant, full of colour, and has the ability to appeal to a wide variety of listens and DJs alike. Much like her previous releases for the likes of Ominira and Happy Skull, Throwing Shade's five tunes are a whirlpool of styles and ideas that somehow make sense as a whole; moreover, her music contains something deeply personal, and although many of her sounds are rooted in an 80's mysticism, they sounds totally singular and representative of the times that we live in. Rather than branding it under one banner, the only way to describe this artist's music is to say that it is certainly fresh, compelling, and altogether enjoyable.

Review: Given his usual productivity and regular release schedule, it's something of a surprise to find that Helium Sessions is Tobias Freund's first solo single for two years. Typically, the Ostgut Ton man is in a bleak mood, expertly fusing dense, high-octane drums, horror-influenced electronics, creepy textures and paranoid field recordings on superb opener "LAGEOS 1". "Helios" increases the tempo further via seemingly sped-up drum patterns and grandiose, room-filling chords, while closer "Spectrum V" throws a little industrial attitude into the mix - alongside skittish, pitched-downm jungle-style breakbeats - to complete the paranoid, dystopian mood. This latter track is particularly bold, suggesting that Freund has found his voice again after a period away from the limelight.

Review: Revisiting one of the stand-out moments from their debut LP, Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Lou Hayter's synth-pop project undoubtedly sports some similarities with the former's other notable venture, Air. There is a more edgy, krautrock atmosphere in the original track but the same retro-fetishism is palpable, whilst Tom Furse's "Extrapolation" remix goes as far as to sound overtly like an Air record with its starlit washes of chord laid out in illustrious sequences. Yan Wagner is in a cheeky italo mood on his version, letting a fulsome bassline take centre stage. That leaves Axel Le Baron to get positively laconic with some tape warbled melodies and b-movie soundtracks charm all of his own.

Review: Valcrond Video, the label of Brooklyn-based visual artist and producer Luke Wyatt presents it's very first vinyl issue in the shape of two new tracks from Torn Hawk, one of Wyatt's aliases. First coming to the fore in a musical sense with a set of distressed guitar and asphalt beat attacks on the LIES White Label series, Torn Hawk has been closely associated with Ron Morelli's label ever since with Wyatt subsequently working with Karen Gwyer, Secret Circuit and Willie Burns. Distancing himself a bit from the grime and grit some associate with his productions, the two new tracks have more in common with the more expansively voiced compositions on Emotional Response release Teen Hawk, or the cinematic melancholy of the untitled EP he released under the alias Lossmaker. Clearly Wyatt is building towards housing all his musical instincts under one roof.
