Unboxed Brain (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: ASGDE 012. Rel: 20 Mar 17
  1. B12 - "Worlds End" (Future/Past remix) (5:20)
  2. B12 - "Worlds End" (Mark Broom remix) (6:40)
  3. Scanner - "Eros (Bitten By The Black Dog)" (5:51)
  4. The Future Sound Of London - "Monolith" (4:00)
Review: The seventh and final instalment of De:Tuned's brilliant Unboxed Brain series - an unashamed tribute to 1990s IDM and ambient techno featuring contributions from many of the artists who defined that scene - is predictably special. It features a slew of new remixes of previously released tracks, plus "Monolith", a previously unreleased ambient track from the Future Sound of London that's every bit as weird, wonderful and out there as the duo's greatest work. Elsewhere, Kirk Degiorgio (as Future/Past) and Mark Broom both drag B12's "World's End" towards the dancefloor (the latter providing a punchy electro re-make), while The Black Dog provides a brilliantly blissful, string-drenched ambient interpretation of Scanner's "Eros".

  1. Baaz - "Burgundy" (6:39)
  2. Idealist - "Why Did You Come Here" (8:07)
  3. Thomas Wood - "Rough Road" (5:37)
  4. Christoph Schindling - "Most Important" (8:22)
Review: Swiss label Idealistmusic return with another fine various artists EP: the first since 2015's edition which brought us great stuff from SCSI-9, Pablo Mateo and Idealist himself. For the label's ninth edition, they serve up some tough tribal deep house by fellow Swiss deepness purveyors Baaz of Office Recordings whose contribution "Burgundy" is emotive as ever. Thomas Wood's "Rough Road" is classic deep house informed by a healthy love of classic Chicago sounds by Larry Heard or Chris Gray. On the flip, Christoph Schindling's contribution "Most Important" is a summery and hypnotic groove awash in tape saturation and lo-fi aesthetics; its spanglish melodies working some real magic over its strict electro beat.

  2. Borusiade - "Confutation" (6:19)
  3. The Sixteen Steps - "Signals From The South" (6:28)
  4. The Sixteen Steps - "Promises On The Run" (7:17)
Review: Rampant and 'up for it' as usual, the Cititrax label is back with a new set of wayward technoid experiments for the more trained ears on the dancefloors. This time it's Romania's Borusiade and newcomer The Sixteen Steps who share two sides of a wax plate and, of course, proceed to annihilate any idea of a quiet night in. The former sets off with the mechanical acid bumps of "Infatuation", guided by an eerie set of vocal blurs, and that's followed by the comparatively more beat-centric techno of the apocalyptic "Confutation". On the flip, The Sixteen Steps first lands on "Signals From The South", a house banger with noxious levels of mutant bass at its core, followed by the single-minded industrialism and sheer techno brutality of "Promises On The Run". WOWZAH!

Review: The final entry into Finders Keepers' "bygone supernatural psychedelic cinema scores" sub-label Finders Kreepers sees another pair of unique tracks dug out of obscurity. George Dunning & The Brothers Candoli's "Zodiac Blues" comes from a South American only 7? dedicated to the nightclub music of The Brothers Candoli in Richard Quine's Bell Book And Candle, while Gianfranco Reverberi's "Orgiastic Ritual" is the theme from Renato Polselli's Reincarnation Of Isobel, an piece of breathy lounge music with spectral flamenco touches.

Cat: EGLO 023. Rel: 23 Apr 12
  1. Analogous
  2. Grandfather Fire
  3. I Feel It In My Forehead
Review: Living up to his most recognised name with every release, LA producer Gifted & Blessed joins the Eglo family with a quite excellent EP under the lesser spotted Abstract Eye moniker. This name was last used by Reyes-Whittaker on the Cool Warm Divine EP for the Valentine Connexion imprint, a release that impressed the Juno review crew despite the fact the Abstract Eye identity was under wraps at the time. The rich analogue techno explorations dipped in glowering warmth and soul that ran through that release are present and correct on Whittaker's Eglo debut, especially the opening track "Analogous". Commencing with a neck snapping percussive flex, it doesn't take long for the track to get consumed by flourishes of rich analogue texture and undercurrents of fuzzed out bass. Alongside this "Grandfather Fire" floats in more pensive strains of machine made funk, gradually unfurling into intricately layered bursts of kaleidoscopic colour that retain a certain restraint throughout. Whittaker reserves the best till last however, with "I Feel It In My Forehead" making full space of the B Side expanse for a gloriously paced sojourn through sumptuous electronic soul.

  6. Georgia - "Bridge 2" (3:48)
Review: Eclectic Belgian label Meakusma serve up more strange delights that they're fast becoming known for. Georgia are Brian Close and Justin Tripp who work out of their studio in Chinatown, NYC. They released the album Like Comments earlier this year and Like Comment Comments, naturally, is the remix-driven accompaniment. There are some truly inventive takes featured here by a stellar cast. DFA's Bryce Hackford serves up a nice deep house revision of "Nu Way Heat", NYC's RVNG INT'L deliver a harsh and hard hitting digi dub chugger on the remix of "Abstrackt High" plus two new tracks by Georgia themselves. "Bridge 1" and "Bridge 2" continue on with their oddball cinematic vibes as heard on the album and perfect for those chill out moments.

  3. Throwing Shade - "Dream Scene" (3:27)
Review: According to Beating Heart, Hugh Tracey made several thousand field recordings across Sub-Saharan Africa between the 1920s and 1970s. His intention was to 'reveal the beauty and complexity of the music to a world that saw little value in it.' Fast forward to the present day, Tracey's bid to preserve the music of Africa for future generations lives on. Beating Heart has shared the late Tracey's archive at the International Library of African Music (ILAM) with contemporary producers and keeping in line with Tracey's vision, all proceeds will be used to assist people in the areas where the music was originally recorded. London's Throwing Shade, fresh of a great release for Ninja Tune turns in the vivid and polyrhythmic 'Dream Scene", Hotflush's Machinedrum gives us the intense polyrhythmic Sub Saharan trance induction of "Lewasi" while Ibibio Sound Machine gives us the soul-funk boogie of "Amai Ndiwulule".

  4. Trevor Deep Jr - "T To Da P"
Review: Spanish deep house label Troubled Kids celebrate their 10th release with a various artist EP featuring music from Rush Hour and Neroli act Ricardo Miranda, French producer Life Recorder, Delsin house head Trevor Deep Jr. and label reps Jesus Gonsev & The Troubled Kids Gang. Waves of synths, Chicago bass and snappy snares control Miranda's busy "Polysynthetic Jungle", while The Troubled Kids Gang opt for looped Rhodes and a streamlined arrangement in "Neon Nights". Life Recorder stays deep and piano driven with "Winter Feeling", which transitions into Trevor Deep Jr.'s "T To Da P"; something moodier with a percussive skip. Four solid cuts of deeper, Chicago inspired house.

Review: It's been some six years since Caroline "Miss Kittin" Herve and Michel "The Hacker" Amato last delivered fresh material together. While we await further news of their long-mooted comeback, there's this tasty EP of previously unheard archive material to enjoy. Made up of tracks recorded between 1997 and '99 - when their production partnership was in its' infancy - The Lost Tracks Volume 1 contains a number of fuzzy, stylish, floor-friendly bangers, from the S&M-themed madness of opener "Leather Forever" and stripped-back electro gem "Nightlife" (a tribute to Berlin clubs of the period, apparently), to the high-tempo acid-loaded freakishness of "Loving The Alien". Top-notch sleaze.

Review: Contort Yourself reaches its sixth installment with yet another era spanning gathering of post-punk and industrial oddities for the most deviant of dancefloors to digest. In the contemporary corner we have Penelope's Fiance, a promising industrial artist from Greece. Meanwhile on the B-side, Nigel Ayers as Nocturnal Emissions takes us back to 1983 with the utterly chilling "Demon Circuits Bloodbath" and "Even The Good Times Are Bad". L.I.E.S boss Ron Morelli steps up as U202 to remix "Even The Good Times Are Bad" as a death march of malevolent percussion.

Review: Lighta! Sound and its crew of artists are largely credited with bringing dubstep and UK bass music into Vancouver's consciousness. Hugely influential to the fabric of dance music in the city, they are at the heart of a dynamic community built on inclusion and respect. For more than a decade they have remained firmly rooted in many facets of Western Canada's electronic music subculture. The inaugural Babel Printed & Pressed record contains two retrospective original tracks and accompanying remixes from Lighta! Sound founding members Taal Mala and Michael Red. The accompanying magazine insert contains first hand accounts from the early days of Lighta! and this defining time in Vancouver, from community members Jamie Abugov and Andrew Ryce. The magazine also contains exclusive artwork from Vancouver artist Jonny Ostrem.

Review: It's been nearly a year since experimentalist Tackle (AKA Australian exile Greg Steele) made his debut on Berlin-based imprint Another Dark Age with the acclaimed Benzedrine EP. This belated follow-up sees the producer transfer to A Colourful Storm in order to deliver two more eccentric assaults on the senses. On A-side "Grondman" he crowds out homemade field recordings of Australian horse races with buzzing, Nine Inch Nails style guitars, fizzing electronics, dystopian textures and scattergun, thrill-a-minute breakbeats. Flipside "Smoke Point" is, if anything, even more robust and in your face, with Steele accompanying his usual fuzzy electronics and razor-sharp riffs with a hectic, techno style rhythm track.

Review: Prepare for battle... Jonathan Krohn and Karl Meier unleash their Talker machine for the first time since 2014 with three brutal machine narratives that surmise the current paranoid psyche. "Battle Standard" rolls out like a fleet of panzas, with its tribalized drums flattening everything in their path. "(Gold) Standard" takes us deeper into the warfare with depth charge percussion and industrial strength textures and atmospheres while the subversive staccato aesthetic of "Snub Nose" echoes with a sense of gunfire. Frank.

Review: Robert Crash's new TC White alias offers an ulterior shade of raw here, made possible by Swiss newbie label Moto. This is proper bangin' material from start to finish, kicked off with the liquid-like patterns of "Cow", a grungy house banger masterminded by heavy folds of mutant bass and crusty drums; "Muffin" splits the tempo down to a magnificently awkward broken beat with a deep, off-kilter sensibility. On the flip, "Cool" travels under a much murkier, more swamped sort of disguise, while "Cheese" is barely able to contain its inebriated groove from melting apart amid distorted tape hiss and loose instrumentation, which leaves "Mountain" to provide a little disco comfort to this mighty fine, utterly loopy EP of true-school house music.

Review: Some lovely vocoder pop courtesy of London duo Alexander Keefe & Joakim Kristiansen aka Teachers: actually real life teachers in fact. One of the guys released previously on WT as Tagwell Woods and the label claims that this "works at home or in the club." True that. This is convincing '80s synthpop from the machines right through to the methodology and recording techniques (it seems!) and even hints at taking influence from legends such as Erasure, Pet Shop Boys or Stephin Merritt's Magnetic Fields project. Comes with colour picture sleeve with photo realistic painting by Gabe Benzur.

Review:  Returning to R&S for another bout of nail-biting techno propulsion, Paula Temple is in no mood to take it easy on Deathvox. The title track bucks and jerks like a goliath in restraints, the juggernaut rhythm bolstered by the kind of demonic synth wails that made AFX's "Elephant Song" such an effective nightmare vision. "Monstro" may come on in more melodic tones, but the intro is equally a ruse for a tough industrial piston pump of drums and distortion has handled by a professional. It's on "Ful" that Temple really allows you to catch your breath with a more evenly tempered rhythm section and broad sweeps of synth that call to mind the melancholy of early Autechre.

Review: FaltyDL's Blueberry label covers a whole spectrum of electronic dance music, and with each new release comes a surprise in one way or another; whether it be glitchy post-drum & bass, or silky deep house, and forward-thinking bass cocktails, quality is never an issue that we're concerned with. This time we have newcomer Tenant liven up the place with six bursts of bass experimentation, and from the utterly bonkers jungle patterns of "Remote Lover", to the minimal electronica of "Unison Yellow", or noisy drum thrashing of "Lunar Gymnast", you will certainly not be bored by the both the originality and diversity of these daring pieces of dance futurism. Sickness throughout.

Review: Life & Death's head honcho DJ Tennis serves up some brooding, pop inflected deep house for main room madness on "Divisions" featuring the rich vocals of Jeppe Kjellberg of Danish pop-tronica trio Whomadewho; expect to be hearing a lot of this one this year! We've also the more straight ahead, dark melodic journey track executed in the way that only a Life & Death record can be on "Chirality" featuring some intense atmosphere provided by Sophie Trudeau's (Godspeed You Black Emperor!) string orchestra direction. "Divisions" gets an equally dark and mysterious remix, full of rich synth leads and bleepiness by Frankfurt master Roman Flugel and "Chirality" gets an epic makeover by experimental electronica legends Plaid, which is equally worthy of your attention.

  1. 28th October 2014 (15:09)
  2. 8th August 2014 (20:21)
Review: Nico Jaar is evidently enjoying juggling his own creative urges with the responsibilities of running Other People, with the label's latest transmission a most daring experiment indeed. Under the banner Terepa, NHK'Koyxen called on Rashad Becker, Laurel Halo, Julia Holter, Charlotte Collin, Lucrecia Dalt and Gregoire Simon to join him in an international improvised recording session. These two 20 minute sessions were conducted without any form of communication with the results layered and mixed by NHK'Koyxen into the two pieces presented here. Despite the number of people involved there is a remarkable serenity to opening composition "28th October 2014" whilst "8th August 2014" is more redolent of the abstract noise one expects when Becker and NHK'Koyxen are involved. A most interesting sonic endeavour.

Review: Von Tesla aka Marco Giotto returns to Chevel's Enklav imprint with a new collection of glitchy, wide-eyed sonic sculptures. Hard ambient is the one way to describe these four tracks, where docile pads and airy drones collide with harsh wisps of noise and synthesized percussion. "City Lights", for example, assembles a groove out of jarring synth keys and would make a fine addition to any house or techno record being played. You'll need three decks, tough!

  1. SZ31X71 (4:32)
  2. SZ31X71 (Roly Porter remix) (5:08)
Review: Tommy Four Seven and Alain continue their project as These Hidden Hands with a new bullet of high-powered industrial techno for their own Hidden Hundred label. "SZ31X71" is a slow builder, but once the folds of noise and distortion reach a climax it's all fury and vengeance from these two: metallic bursts of drums collide with an electrifying ensemble of synths that have been stripped right down to their essentials. Master technician and electronic visionary Roly Porter gives his own interpretation of the tune and, as you'd expect from the man, it's an aptly apocalyptic take on the original, a remix that perhaps goes even beyond the original by adding an extra layer of doom. Excellent.

  5. Angkor (Death In Vegas remix) (5:55)
Review: Tommy Four Seven and Alain released their second full album entitled Vicarious Memories (on their own Hidden Hundred), in late 2016. Although loosely an instrumental electronic album, the album made extensive use of guitar and vocals and featured prominent guest vocal contributions from underground Berlin based musicians Julia Kotowski and Ale Hop. Now we are treated to a series of remixes which remain in (dis)harmony with the originals and they've drafted quite the recruits: all capable of keeping in line with the brutalist aesthetics. Telefon Tel Aviv aka Josh Eustis steps up first to deliver an advanced retake on "Glasir", showcasing his singular sound as always. Los Angeleno and Droid Recordings main man Drumcell dons the Hypoxia moniker once again for more brooding darkwave noise on his version of "The Telepath". The legendary UK dark ambient maestro Lustmord impresses with a version more sublime and soothing than you'd expect from the man, on his chill and dubby remix of "Socotra" until the EPs highlight comes in the form of the equally legendary Justin Broaderick. As JK Flesh he delivers a typically gnarly and contorted take on techno with "Dendera Light".

Review: Continuing Bliq's quest to unearth the most spooky and otherworldly techno and deep house fodder out there, Thingamajicks step into the spotlight with a staggeringly confident first release that touches on a range of moods without even a hint of trepidation. "Priceless" is a slow, stark exercise in 4/4 melancholia focused on dramatic swells of chord rather than anything percussive. "Sub Rosa X" goes even further out into an immersive swarm of analogue electronics loping in a reluctant groove, the sounds swaying as though they are without an anchor, and then when you least expect it the title track takes a massive swerve towards lackadaisical guitar chords and breezy optimism.
