  4. Toine (6:09)
Review: French producer 1977 aka Matsa, delivers a bold and subtle blending of ambient textures, deep pads and raw rhythms perfectly mixed with some minimal sequences. In Brief, a fine and complete piece of electronic music, made with constant attention to detail. Starting out with the hauntingly emotive ambience of "Tkg" where sub bass pulsations lurk between the crackling of surface noise, pitch shifted vocals and transcendental chilling pads, then the dusty and emotive deep house of "Soso" which is informed equally by Fred P as it is by the likes of Lawrence. On the flip, there's the rather Fred P sounding "Mondat" which is the highlight a smoothly emotive deep house number while "Toine" gets dubbier and subterranean in a way that UntilMyHeartStops fans will appreciate.

  3. O Tom Potom S.T (6:16)
Review: Last year, it was unofficially announced that Serbian musical misfit Nenad Markovic (AKA the snappily-named 33.10.3402) had delivered an album to L.I.E.S. While we're still waiting for that set, this 12" marks the experimental techno and ambient producer's third EP for Ron Morelli's prolific imprint. He begins in predictably creepy, otherworldly fashion, effortlessly blending backwards percussion, snatched field recordings, heavy bass and ghostly electronics on epic A-side "100 Drone Radio Passive Scape". Things get a little more upbeat on B1 cut "No Decline A (121 Roland MC303), where manipulated, acid-style electronic lines rise and fall over a metronomic kick-drum. Meanwhile, Markovic's innate ability to turn experimental productions into atmospheric ambient classics is once again showcased on closing track "O Tom Protom ST".

  1. Slick Response (5:17)

  4. Graveyard Shift (3:51)
Review: Having recently devoted more of his time to the breezy, melodious bliss of the D.K project, Dang Khoa-Chau once again dons the 45 ACP alias for a more downbeat E.P on L.I.E.S. It's arguably far more accessible than his previous work for the label under the now familiar moniker, but still pleasingly left-of-centre. There's much to admire throughout, from the poignant melodies, drifting keys and spaced-out drums of "Hang In There", and Marimba-laden deep space techno of "Smoked Out", to the clarinet-laden ambient textures of bittersweet closer "Graveyard Shift". While opener "Slick Response" - a bubbling, ear-pleasing chunk of metronomic techno - feels a little more positive, it's still largely melancholic in tone.

  4. Silent Servant - "Time In Body" (3:44)
  5. Silent Servant - "Severed Union" (4:13)
Review: The sixth issue from Jealous God, and the first of what promises to be another year of intrigue for the label, pairs up visual director Juan Mendez with 51717, aka New York artist Lili Schulder. Any fans of Schulder's 51717 cassette for Opal Tapes or her Shadowlust collaboration with Svengalisghost will be excited by the prospect of some new music committed to wax and she's on wonderfully abstract form here. Listening to opening track "The Glove" is an experience similar to being slowly covered by a viscous liquid to the point of suffocation, with her barely audible spoken word delivery only adding to the sense of foreboding. Complementing this, 51717 provides two shorter but equally striking compositions with "Regard" especially chilling. It's a mood that seeps into the two Silent Servant productions with "Severed Union" ripe mixtape opener material. Do check the mix CD from Surface Tension pair Nihar Bahall & Jason Polastri too!

  2. Song For Louise (2:18)
  3. Life's A Killer (part 1 & 2) (9:49)
Review: Mark Phillips and Rob Lawrence made some of the heaviest industrial music during the 80's, and certainly some of the best the UK has seen, under the name 5X0D. This 1982 reissue was way beyond its time back then, bringing together the energy and cutting edge of techno and acid together with the chilling ambience of early synth music by the likes of Kraftwerk and the rest of the German 70's lineage. Take away the vocals and "Negativ Terminal Data" literally sounds like an early Chicago experimentation by the house legends of the day. It's certainly a recommended title and a highlight for this week's digging selection.

  5. Depford Blues (Excerpt)
Review: A Model Authority sees Shifted and Sigha join forces for a series of mooted releases that commence with Model 001. The new collaborative was apparently born out of "the desire to rise above the very modern mediocrity and complacency that surrounds us," and it sees both producers in a German-techno kind of mood. Much of the EP's harsh and quick-fire loops suggest an early-Regis influence, like "Pieces Of Me" and "Cycles Of Violence", while "Collapse (Rhythm)" sees three lone bass drums lumber in three-beat time like a half finished Henning Baer production. Model 001 also brings with it some industrial experimentation with "Etched" sounding like a broken television furiously exhaling white noise, while "Depford Blues (Excerpt)" is the perfect soundtrack for a Chris Cunningham remake of George Orwell's book 1984.

Review: After a successful debut release with Untitled Gear, Croatian label continues their journey through fields and forests. Still exploring the Russian Federation, only this time they hired Udacha's honcho and main protagonist A5. Record kicks off with 'Fantasy'. A dreamy kalimba piece which eventually evolves into a deep house track and could be described as a soundtrack from your latest dream while 'Raw Abstractionism' doesn't disappoint it's name. On the flip side we are introduced to the afro banger 'Torri Wowo' which feels almost like driving through safari on a truck. 'Acoustic Cut' calms things down and brings us to an end with a clear message.

"Xanatko", "Isaka" and "Exteberri" truly explore the deepest realms of electronic music, and together make for a mind-blowing experience on the headphones. You'll enter a realm made of woozy soundscapes, field recordings and subtle waves of improvised free jazz. It's dream music for the dreamers, one of the highest calibre. 4. Actress - "Bird Matrix" (Simbiosi remix) (6:40)
Review: Germany's K7 have got it on lock-down with this latest 12', a full rework EP of Actress' "Bird Matrix" killer by a pair of dance luminaries. First up is Kid606, a man who has been making 'outsider' music since before the term was ever coined, and one who has been every bit as important to the dance music scene all the more commercial names. Kid606's Club Mix is driving, filled with slithering percussion and led by a gorgeous swarm of aqueous synths and Zelda-like sonics, while the dub version slows things down and muddies the groove up into a heady, meditative bundle of melodies and beats. Simbiosi, on the other hand, goes for the jugular and delivers a heavy, stomping techno retuning of the original - what a blinder! There's also a tune by the mysterious Gnesis, "Pear", which appeared on Actress' own K7 compilation. Ya need!

Review: Thankfully, Richard D. James has decided to finally release at least some of the output that he's been banging on about since mid-2000s. In a number of interviews, the might Aphex Twin hinted that he has vast artilleries of tracks stacked up and unreleased, probably more on purpose than out of laziness...or maybe not. What we do know is that AFX is reborn after the string of acid 12"s released about 10 years ago on Rephlex, that saw the alias become one of the most popular of James' alter egos. Orphaned Deejay Selek is a collection of tunes that contain all of the Twin's magic and unpredictably, but that also cut straight to the point and head to the middle of the dance floor. This is banging brain dynamite coated in the man's iconic style and flair. Welcome back AFX, and many hats off to Warp for making it happen.

Review: Arc Light Editions are steadily becoming the masters of outsider reissues. In the last few years, the productive label has resurfaced valuable material by Arthur Russell, among others, and this summer they have turned their attention to Finnish electronic pioneer, Pekka Airaksinen. The original edition of Buddhas Of Golden Delight has never received a proper re-edition until now, and it has remained rather expensive on the second-hand market. This is no surprise, however, as Airaksinen's use of drum machines and electronics still sounds as fresh as ever, and the LP sits perfectly with the current state of affairs in the experimental music scene. From the grainy, watery beats of "Sakiri", to the oddball drones of "Kandrasuryapradipa", this is pure sonic drifting at its most daring. Lovers of modular electronics, please go ahead and indulge. This is warmly recommended.

  1. HTH020 (The Haxan Cloak's Cloud Of Witness)
  2. Typeface/Greyscale ((Vatican Shadow's The World Is Complete)
Review: Earlier this year Houndstooth regulars Akkord released the HTH020 EP, in which the duo took their bass-heavy sound to darker, more industrial places. It's something explored more explicitly on this remix package, which may well have two of the year's most radical tracks revisions. Tri Angle artist The Haxan Cloak delivers the epic 10-minute "Cloud of Witness" remix, taking elements from all four of the original Akkord EP's tracks, and turning them into an unclassifiable behemoth of bass, drone and strobing beats. Vatican Shadow's take on "Greyscale" and "Typeface" is a little more conventional, but nevertheless turns the two tracks into a powerful piece of techno that would demolish a dance floor in the right setting.

Review: Indigo and Synkro return for Houndstooth duty under the Akkord guise, with HTH020 their first material for the fabric-affiliated label since last year's roundly praised debut album. That long player was perhaps the most confident display of the sound design-heavy production style the Mancunian pair had been narrowing in on since their cultish white label bow, but this new 12" finds them adding whole new levels of darkness to the mix. Moody low end sits deep in the channels; given the space to breath by Akkord who seem careful to restrict their drum samples to the barest of appearances at times (see "Gravure") whilst those out there that enjoyed the Millie + Andrea album for Modern Love will probably gravitate towards "Continuum" which showcases a murky, raw take on breakbeat-led jungle.

Review: There's a delightfully celebratory feel about this debut volume of Cititrax Tracks, a new 12" series from Minimal Wave offshoot Cititrax. As beautifully presented as we've come to expect, Tracks Volume 1 boasts a quartet of dancefloor-ready smashers from a blend of new faces and label stalwarts. Amato (aka The Hacker) kicks things off with the glistening EBM funk of "Physique" - all restless synth refrains and pounding bottom end - before LIES affiliate Tsuzing go all dark, psychedelic and twisted on the thrillingly intense, acid-flecked "King of System". An-I go all DAF (with a touch of Front 242) on the fuzzy and dystopian stomper "Mutter", before Cititrax regulars Broken English Club delivers a storming chunk of industrial-tinged analogue funk ("Glass"). Bravo!

Featuring killer artwork from Sunn O))) man Stephen O'Malley, and mastered by Rashad Becker, Pale Calling is aptly described as "a mysterious space of slowly cycling electronics, distracted vocal mumbles and often unidentifiable field recordings." It arrives in a busy year for Ambarchi's Black Truffle following long players from Charlemagne Palestine and improvisational trio AMM, and proves to be a delicious listen that will appeal to fans of the recent Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and Felicia Atkinson album.

If you were one of the lucky few to grab his Bad News 12" with LIES don Ron Morelli then you'll be ready for the haywire nature of the Kino-i EP. Finding a perfect home on Minimal Wave offshoot Cititrax, the EP sees the Berlin based producer indulge his machine love on three variations of the same track that almost explode off the wax - must check for fans of Nation, LIES, Mathematics. Pressed up on fluorescent 160gm yellow vinyl and housed in a high gloss black and white sleeve.

Starting out with the ultraviolence of "Blood Trophy" with its body bashing bass assault and overdriven drones washing over you with blatant fury, there's then the broken beat industrial techno onslaught of "VPA" which will appeal to fans of Talker or Simon Shreeve. By the way Repitch man D. Carbone aka Honzo steps up to deliver a seething and slow burning remix. Finally, strap yourself in for the abrasive soundscape of modular abuse on "Zevra".

In many ways, it doesn't matter. The music he produces - a ghostly blend of curious found sounds, crusty ambience, mawkish deep house and unsettling techno - seems to revel in its unmarked, untitled nature. This long player for Canada's Total Stasis continues on his now familiar theme, quietly shuffling between eerie soundscapes, experimental interludes, dubbed-out minimalist oddness (the weird but immersive "Track 3") and clanking, industrial house (the alien electronics and metallic percussion of "Track 4").

Review: Some 25 years after delivering his debut 12", Richard D James hasn't lost the ability to thrill or inspire. By his obtuse standards, the material that makes up the surprise Cheetah EP is actually rather laidback and melodious. "Cheetah2 (LD Spectrum)", for example, sounds like a slow house jam written by robots, while the even deeper "Cheetah7B" shuffles along in a metronomic fashion, seemingly oblivious to the increasingly aggressive World at large. Of course, those trademark skittish IDM rhythms are present and the Cornishman has thrown in a couple of hazy ambient cuts for good measure.
