Review: Given the critical reception rightly afforded to Tahliah Barnett's superb debut album as FKA Twigs, it makes perfect sense for Young Turks to rustle up a swift reissue of FKA Twigs, the four track 12" that announced her to the pop music world last year. This EP was the first instance of Barnett's ethereal vocals weaved in amidst production work from Arca that was at times floating, others crushingly pressurised. Naturally the effects of the music are heightened when combined with Jesse Kanda's mind bending videos ("Water Me" especially) but late comers to the magic of Twigs will be all over this. Do check "Papi Pacify" as Arca is on some "Cry Me A River" era Timbalaand tip.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
Review: Young Turks clearly believe that Tahlilah Barnett, formerly known as Twigs (hence the FKA Twigs pseudonym) is a star in the making. They plucked her from obscurity last year and have since released a number of highly regarded singles. This debut album expands on her EPs to date, showcasing her woozy, intricate take on post-R&B. Naturally, her vocals - fragile and evocative, sounding not unlike Kate Bush on occasions - take centre stage, riding a bed of layered-up head-nodding rhythms, post dubstep grooves, trip-hop soundscapes, fizzing electronics and bubbling synthesizers. It's an intoxicating brew, all told, and one that delivers further proof of Barnett's immense potential.

Review: It's been a long time since Jamie XX offered up any solo material, so this new release for Young Turks comes loaded with a certain amount of expectation. His trademark knack for atmospheric melodies and catchy arrangements is intact, with "Girl" stepping out on a slow house template anchored by live bass while snatches of strained vocal meld ring out to form the basis for the track. "Sleep Sound" is equally winsome, if a little more energetic as it moves through filtered breakdowns and skittish diversions as though Theo Parrish were on a rotary mixer in front of the final master.

Review: In Colour is of course the long awaited debut solo album from The xx's in-house knob twiddler Jamie 'xx' Smith, arriving through regular home Young Turks backed with a whole host of guest appearances. The more obsessive Jamie xx fans out there (of which we wager there are many) will no doubt already have burned out their laptops and retinas basking in the all too colourful pre-release streams of In Colour, but it's always nice to grip an album in your hands. The eleven tracks on In Colours come across like a low key ode to the rave from Jamie and pals, with Four Tet, Romy & Oli xx, Young Thug and Popcaan featuring, and yes there is also plenty of steel pan. "Hold Tight", which sounds like Jamie's attempt at forest techno, is a definite highlight! Young Turks have popped in a CD edition of the album too.

Review: Young Turks lay down a one sided 12" marker for In Colour, the upcoming debut album from Jamie XX which promises to be one of this year's bigger events. Weirdly, there's not a steel pan in sight on "Gosh", a slightly unassuming production where all the hallmarks of a hardcore rave (horns, MC chatter, recycled breakbeats) are boiled down into five minutes that shouldn't really stick in your memory. But watch out, give it a few listens and you'll be saying "oh my gosh" absent-mindedly for the rest of the week.

Review: He may remain as busy as ever as a live performer, but it's been some two years since Lewis Roberts last graced the shelves of records stores with a new Koreless 12" (although he did contribute to a RSD release from Young Turks this year). A mark of a true artist is to never stand still, for your sound to demonstrate a tangible level of progression so it's refreshing to see Koreless experimenting with a more club focussed sound on this 12" and move away from the cinematic textures of his last record Yugen. Both "TT" and "Love" are malleable tracks that could be combined with percussive DJ tools to devastating effect.

Review: The heat around Sampha has been building since his debut with SBTRKT in 2010. Now with the weight of the BBC behind him and his distinctive soul-stirring vocals, his profile is set to go supernovae. Following the success of "Dual" comes this special 7". Both tracks are structured around nothing but the piano and voice. Serenading with such charm and soul, Sampha makes you feel like you've know both tracks forever. With a richness and song writing dexterity that has potential to resonate with fans of both James Blake and Gregory Porter, Sampha's heat is totally justified.

  1. Hold On

  3. Hold On (Sisi Bak Bak remix)
Review: Young Turks present a collectors edition of the SBTRKT and Sampha gem "Hold On", a considered highlight from last year's critically acclaimed self titled LP by the former nu jazz player. Strictly limited, this 300 pressing is housed in a vacuum sealed plastic sleeve that holds a lenticular image of both artists, the type of design craft we've yet to see on another record - it's seriously impressive and quite fun to play with! As for the music, house lovers have already adopted the delicate "Hold On" as their own, with a rather smart smoothed out edit courtesy of the Love Unlimited Vibes lot already in circulation but the SBTRKT completists will want this edition for sure. Complementing this is "Ride To Freedom" a new SBTRKT jam that straddles the line between velveteen electro and more recent juke sounds deftly while the mysterious Sisi Bak Bak remixes the title track (NB this might be Thom Yorke but who really cares?)

Review: This second full-length from Aaron Jerome's masked SBTRKT project is something of an eclectic affair featuring a supporting cast that could fill out Field Day. It seems like the SBTRKT sound has developed into a more subtle and finessed one in the period since Jerome issued his debut, self titled album. While there are, of course, heavyweight moments of thrilling dancefloor release - see the kaleidoscopic, Hud Mo-goes-post dubstep flex of "Lantern" - by and large the album sticks to slower tempos and woozier, more soulful moods, delivering tracks variously influenced by Prince, hip-hop, modern soul, R&B and piano ballads. The result is a sophisticated, vibrant and thoroughly mature electronic pop album blessed with an impressive array of guest vocalists (Jessie Ware, Andrew Ashong, Sampha and Ezra Koenig all feature).
