Review: With a new big budget Hollywood movie based on classic Manga series Ghost in the Shell now opening across Europe, now seems as good a time as any to revisit the soundtrack to the 1995 movie of the same name. Composed and largely performed by acclaimed Japanese composer Kenji Kawaii, the film's music was arguably more inspired than the movie itself. Utilizing a blend of electronic hardware, traditional Japanese percussion instruments and snatches of exotic vocals, Kawaii's ambient compositions are variously beautiful, beguiling and uncomfortably moody. There are some more cinematic moments, too, but even these rely on atmospheric electronics as much as choral motifs.

Review: More commonly known for a more exotic, wild funk soundtrack, Georges 'Nino Nardini' Teperino was way ahead of his time throughout all of his work, but Musique Pour Le Futur pitched him centuries ahead. Originally composed in 1970 for library label Neuilly, the LP takes us to galaxies unknown on rockets charged by Moogs and old tape machines. Loopy, often schizophrenic, dripping in found sounds and ideas that are still pretty daring almost 50 years later, this is Nino at his most far-out. Which is saying something.

Review: Since slipping out in 1983, Midori Takada's debut album, Through The Looking Glass, has become something of a sought-after item amongst ambient enthusiasts (with hugely inflated online prices to match). Happily, Palto Flats has decided to reissue it, allowing those without overblown record buying budgets to wallow in its gentle, humid majesty. Remarkably, Takada not only composed and produced it, but also played every instrument, including marimbas, recorder, vibraphone, harmonium, and all manner of things you can hit and shake. The resulting tracks remain hugely beguiling, sitting somewhere between a dreamy take on traditional Japanese music, the classic ambient albums of Brian Eno, and the gentle, sweat-soaked explorations of The Chi Factory.

Review: The breadth of Piero Umiliani reissues over the last few years has been nothing short of spectacular. Once the current scene was exposed to the late artist's wide-reaching catalogue, different labels have flooded in to resurface his best work - which all sounds far ahead of its time. This, Il Mondo Dei Romani, is perhaps the most interesting of his reissues yet, but not only for its music. This is a soundtrack to a '70s documentary that Umiliani made about Ancient Rome, so not only do you get incredible avant-garde music, but also an interesting setting or story to attach to it. Umiliani's ingenious balance between futurism and classicism is just perfect, and while there is always something very stable at the core of his tracks, the artist had a way of introducing new and strange sounds that just makes sense. Although we recommend you o listen to all of his work, this one might well be our favourite yet.
