Review: There have been plenty of retrospectives on the absolutely essential work of Sun Ra and his Arkestra over the years, but trust Strut to go that bit deeper when they elected to focus on the Sun God himself. As the extensive title suggests, this collection places the focus on proceedings in the hands of Marshall Allen, the longest serving member of the Arkestra and current band leader. The results mean In The Orbit Of Ra feels a whole lot more personal and indepth, with over 25 years worth of Sun Ra-lead music documented. It's all been fully remastered from the original tapes and is pretty much the most conclusive introduction to the work of this pioneer one could hope for.

Review: Arthur Russell's legacy has remained strong long after his untimely death in 1992, most notably in recent times with the highly respected music critic Tim Lawrence unveiling his must read biography last year; this follows a documentary Wild Combination and a collection of cover versions released by Electric Minds. It is perhaps this latest musical project presented by the good people at Strut Records that will be of most interest to fans of Russell's work. Arthur's Landing is a collective of musicians who worked with the producer and cellist throughout his varied musical career. Led by guitarist Steve Hall, the ever morphing group of musicians have made a commitment to sustaining Russell's musical legacy and have spent the last few years touring and performing new arrangements of tracks from the Russell canon and they present twelve of them here on this enlightening album which has been produced by contemporary NYC icon Brennan Green. The album lovingly presents unique takes on both well known and unheard Russell tracks - witness the shimmering beauty of their take on "Is It All Over My Face" for just one example. Strut surround themselves with so many great music projects you'd have to wonder what a gaping hole would be left if they weren't around.

Review: Those turned on by Spiritual Jazz should already be aware of West Coast combo Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids. They've been playing and recording together since the 1970s, though We Be All Africans is only their sixth full-length outing. Predictably, it's a fine set, effortlessly fusing their spiritual roots with elements of jazz-funk, soul and, of course, Afro-jazz. Highlights are plentiful, from the swinging, Tony Allen style rhythms, swirling vocals and punchy horns of "Rhapsody In Berlin", and the clarinet-sporting sweetness of the brilliantly percussive "Epiphany", to the stretched-out drum workout "Traponga", which sounds like the work of three drummers and a whole troupe of percussionists.

Review: Having recently mined the post-punk/new wave vaults of Factory Records' 12" releases, it's little surprise that the latest Strut Records release shines more light on the clanking, far-sighted world of the 1980s' most revolutionary genres - namely industrial, post-punk and EBM. This time, former Output boss, Playgroup man and all-round hipster Trevor Jackson is at the helm. His two-disc selection touches on many different strands, from bleak synthesizer jams and crunchy punk-funk to twisted industrial disco, mutant electrofunk (Nitzer Ebb's "I've Lost Control") and almighty percussive workouts (SPK's thrilling "Metal Dance"). While fans of the genre will no doubt own a fair proportion of these tracks, there's enough obscurities to warrant further investigation. As a starting point for newcomers, it's superb.

Review: Strut and Trevor Jackson do the right thing and collude on a second edition of Metal Dance, with a veritable feast of 80's industrial and primitive electronics to sink into. Some 27 tracks deep, Metal Dance 2 widens the remit of the first compilation by a year, collating material from the period 1979 to 1988 and features artists and bands that should be familiar to your eyes in Skinny Puppy, Chris & Cosey, Crash Course In Science and Liaisons Dangereuses along with many lesser known acts. Jackson himself contributes an edit of iconic Blitz DJ Rusty Egan whilst Morphine Records boss Rabih Beaini highlights Lebanon's history with primitive electronics on an edit of Rene Bandaly Family's eighties curio "Tanki Tanki". Impressively, the compilation also features a track by CHBB, a band whose members went on to form DAF and Liaisons Dangereuses and whose small discography was limited to four rare cassettes.

The hat-wearing MBE owner is celebrating 30 years of carnival parties this summer. What better excuse, then, for another breezy, party-centric trawl through the veteran DJ's epic record collection. As usual, the Good Times 30th Anniversary Edition features a selection of festival-friendly grooves, from dusty old disco, flute-sporting funk and classic soul to bouncy disco-house, head-nodding hip-hop and Red Stripe-swigging reggae riddims. By now, we all know what we're getting, but it's still great fun!

Review: This is what happens when one of the leading modern bands who excel in international music team up with a bona fide Afrofunk legend... Together with Orlando Julius, The Heliocentrics have explored the Nigerian pioneer's earliest ideas and never-before-recorded songs to result in an emphatic homage to Africa's rich funk heritage while celebrating modern production techniques and dynamics. Progressive, often cosmic and galvanised with a natural jazzy character (thanks to the awesome horn work) and sturdy funk backbone (thanks to the dense drums and tight guitar work), this is a one-off collaboration that needs both attention and celebration.

Review: There's a beautiful story behind this project... US artist Chief Boima found videos of blind Sierra Leon musician Sorie on YouTube. A successful remix and an even more fortuitous Kickstarter campaign later and Sorie finds himself on a US tour and in the studio making a body of work with Boima that Strut are about to release. It starts right here with the low end pulsations and trembling marimba and heartfelt vocals of "Belle Wahallah" and the softer, slower, steadier early morning cries of "Yeanoh". Complete with remixes from Boddhi Satva and Hagan, this is a stunning package.

Review: Given the sheer amount of material released by spiritual jazz maestro Sun Ra over the years - 120-odd albums and counting - it can be hard for new listeners to know where to start. Gilles Peterson and Strut have come up with an answer: a two-disc Sun Ra primer, which casts a critical eye over his whole career in order to gather together some stone cold aural gold. Peterson has long been a Sun Ra obsessive, and does a superb job in representing the different sides of his career. Check, for example, the doo-wop sweetness of "Dreaming" (a 1955 collaboration with The Cosmic Rays), the African influenced weirdness of "Adventure Equation", and the outer-space brilliance of "Cluster of Galaxies".

Strut completists will know all about Rodion GA from that excellent retrospective of the'80s era Romanian experimental outfit, but Delta Space Mission is near impossible to find in its original pressing. Thankfully, we can always count on Strut to release something totally bonkers and sought-after! This record is basically a dream for anyone whose into synths and anything space-age-related, with tracks such as "Bau-Bau" and "Planeta Misterioasa" really sounding like something out of a far, unknown and unexplored corner of the universe. "Study/Signal/Longing For Home" is another sublime slice of extraterrestrial funk, where odd bleeps and computer-game melodies collide for a battle to the death. Terrific.

Review: Generous applause has rightly headed the way of Strut and Richard Sen for the recently released compilation This Ain't Chicago, which brilliantly documents the nascent acid house sounds that appeared on UK shores in reaction to the spread of the Chicago house sound. A further addendum of applause should be afforded to this 12" accoutrement, which instead of merely picking three tracks from the compilation goes that little bit further. A previously unreleased edit of Bang The Party from Mr Tom Moulton lines the A Side (Tom being the man that invented the remix) whilst the flip has the divatastic "Love Me Baby" from May and a new Richard Sen edit of K.C.C.'s "Future III."

Review: Afro/Latin/tropical fusionists The Souljazz Orchestra have long established themselves as one of the most incendiary live acts on the circuits, reinforcing this rising reputation with a string of fine albums. Here, they deliver their seventh full-length, adding notable French Caribbean and Francophone West African into their already distinctive musical melting pot. Predictably, the results are impressive, with the Ottawa-based sextet effortlessly flitting between humid, Afro-Cuban workouts ("Ware Wa"), Hammond-heavy dancefloor freak-outs ("Bull's Eye"), slick soul sing-alongs ("As The World Turns"), and highly politicized Afrobeat jams ("Greet The Dawn", "Shock & Awe"). As usual, it's all impeccably played and produced, resulting in another killer dose of cross-cultural dancefloor fusion.

Review: Premiership fusionistas Souljazz Orchestra build on their inner fire with their seventh artist album. Marking 10 years since their debut Uprooted, Resistance reminds us of the band's incredible energy, tightness and latent funk in every note they play. Highlights can be found on every track but it's moments like the scat/percussive play off on "Shock & Awe", the feel-good chords and breakdown on "Bull's Eye" and the cowbell driven rhythmic switch on "Ware Wa" that really sparkle and compound the band's longstanding power. No other band of this nature have remained so tight and so consistent for so long. Resisting Resistance is futile.

Review: For hardcore fans of lesser-known African music, Sunburst has always been a under-appreciated outfit. Formed in Tanzania in 1970, the band released a handful of 7" singles and a lone album, Ave Africa, developing a sound that blended Afro-rock, Zamrock, and the Caribbean-influenced fusion style, Kitoto. This Afro-Western-Caribbean fusion is explored extensively on this first career retrospective. While the set also includes tracks from a previously unissued radio session, it mostly mines their officially released output. Spiritual, inventive, intoxicating and entertaining, the music showcased on Ave Africa seems to inhabit a sound space all of its' own, but is rarely less than superb.

Review: Another superb and intricately detailed document from Strut's dedicated archivists, Sunburst's short but hugely prolific activity between '73 and '76 is captured here in all its melting pot glory. Not just their one and only album but all 45s and unreleased recordings too. With six members from across the continent, the fusion, ideas and energy is palpable... Especially on full-screen tracks such as "Kamungulwe" where blues, rock and Tanzanian folk bubble and pop to a climax and "Alhamdullilah" stomps with a sweaty theatrical rock while "Ave Africa" finds the perfect merging point between Afrobeat and jazz. The band's live pedigree is also full screen with that rawness to the recordings that feels like they're in the same room. Addictively rich.

Review: Few Ghanaian musicians are quite as celebrated as Pat Thomas, who recorded and released his first album way back in 1974. Understandably, his releases have become less frequent with the passing of time, and Pat Thomas & The Kwashibu Area Band is his first studio album since 1991. The supporting cast list is, unsurprisingly, impressive, and includes Fela Kuti collaborator Tony Allen, and legendary highlife guitarist Ebo Taylor. Musically, there are few surprises, just a killer collection of bright, breezy, sweet and addictive highlife and Afrobeat jams, all blessed with Thomas' wonderful voice, Taylor's glistening guitars, and some seriously punchy horns. It's a real treat for fans of African music.

Review: It would be fair to say that drummer Julian Bahula holds a unique place in the history of South Africa's anti-apartheid movement. From the 1960s onwards, the acclaimed jazzman's afro-jazz fusion bands - Malombo Jazz Makers, Jabula and Jazz Afrika amongst them - were amongst the most vociferous supporters of the ANC's fight against white supremacy. This excellent retrospective from Strut - a kind of off-shoot of their pioneering Next Stop Soweto series - tells the full story of Bahula's extraordinary career. It's packed with openly political jazz, inspired spoken word cuts and thrilling drum workouts (see Jabula's "Let Us Be Free"), all of which brilliantly join the dots between various styles of US jazz and indigenous African music.

Review: Given the rise in popularity of Dance Mania-inspired ghetto-house and ghetto-tech releases over the last couple of years, it was perhaps inevitable that someone would put together a compilation celebrating the label's greatest moments. That it was Strut that did it with Dance Mania Hardcore Traxx: Dance Mania Records 1986-1997 was something of a comfort; Quinton Scott's crate-digging imprint does these kind of history-driven compilations so well. Dance Mania: Ghetto Madness is a second trawl through the archives of the label and features some fifteen cuts of little-known or hard-to-find tracks from the likes of DJ Funk, Paul Johnson, DJ Rush, Jammin' Gerald and Wax Master Maurice (whose bizarre but brilliant "Bounce That Body" is a highlight). There's also a bonus double CD, and you also get extensive sleeve notes telling the story of one of house music's most distinctive labels. Essential.

With the vinyl now pressed on heavyweight 180g wax, this makes for the perfect introduction into the vivid story of 1970s West African funk. Well done Strut!

Review: Strut's archival remit remains as international as ever, with their latest compilation squaring the focus on late '70s Hawaii on the delightful Aloha Got Soul: Soul AOR & Disco In Hawai'i 1979-1985. Across the backdrop of societal change on the island (statehood into America in '59 and the Vietnam War) Hawaiian youth found inspiration in the music of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and later Earth Wind & Fire leading to a truly vibrant scene by the mid-'70s. It's after this where Strut pick up the story, bringing together a glorious 16 track collection that spans the genres and suggests Hawaii to be a most fertile location for music during this era. Do take some time to check the detailed sleeve notes from Aloha Got Soul's Roger Bong which offer further context for the music!

Review: For those interested in the development of black South African music during the height of the oppressive apartheid regime, Strut's excellent Next Stop Soweto series has always been essential listening. This fourth instalment is, unsurprisingly, another cracker, and is once again packed with high-grade material that perfectly showcases some of the best hybrids of Western rock, soul funk and disco with indigenous South African styles. Highlights are plentiful, and include the riotous dancefloor madness of The Movers' "Soweto Disco", the synthesizer-heavy wooziness of TY Boys, Xoliso's chunky stoner funk-rock, and the anthem-like, slap bass-propelled brilliance of Harari's "Give".

Review: The Strut label have done it again, people. Known for digging up some of the most obscure and interesting material from around the globe - both musically and culturally - the label sits alongside the likes of London's Honest Jon's Records in its ability to pull out unheard material from thin air. This time, we have a compilation of Mauritius' Sega music, a local kind of blues music that has its roots in traditional African music started by slaves of plantations who were looking for greener pastures. The 60's saw the explosion of the genre, and throughout this collection of tunes, you'll hear influences from just about any genre across the soul spectrum. There's psych, Afro beat, Ethiopian funk, and Fela-style chanting. It's a truly remarkable release, and it comes warmly recommended. This could well be up there in the top ten for 2016's world charts... and it's only February!

Review: Given the increased interest in indigenous tropical sounds of late, it's unsurprising to see Strut Records paying tribute to a lesser-known variant of the style. For the uninitiated, Sega Music is a style of goodtime dance music first developed in Mauritius. Soul Souk Sega focuses on the genre's most vibrant period during the 1970s, when electric instrumentation and early synthesizer sounds were adding greater vibrancy to the style's African and European influences. It makes for hugely enjoyable listening, with creole vocals rising over humid grooves and delightfully lo-fi production. As usual with Strut, the accompanying, in-depth sleeve notes tell the story of the style in delicious detail.
