Experimental/Electronic
  1. Into The Void (5:15)
  2. Descension (4:31)
  3. Unsound Mind (4:56)
  4. Terra Incognita (4:14)
Review: Floating between their own B12 imprint and the mighty Warp Records, the UK's Michael Golding and Steve Rutter, also known as B12, have been important in the development of the Anglo techno and IDM scenes up to this day. In 2015, after a lengthy hiatus which saw them release their last 12" in 2007, the duo make their return and it's on Slam's legendary Soma imprint. A good British showdown, indeed. "Into The Void" is a pile of broken drum machine twists, while "Descension" leans towards classic electronica patters and 'intelligent' techno routes. On the flipside, "Unsound Mind" clicks and steps its way through eerie pads and heavy slices of kick drums, whereas "Terra Incognita" enters the ambient kingdom, a habitat only mildly populated by percussion. Terrific.

  1. Sonic Drones (6:16)
  2. Rawfield (5:53)
  3. Rebirth (5:53)
  4. West Bank (5:54)
Review: If you would have asked us a while back, we would never have guessed that Dax J's next move would come on Scotland's legendary Soma imprint, but in hindsight, it makes perfect sense that the artist's effective and militant quasi techno would land on this powerhouse of a label. "Sonic Drones" is a tune that makes no compromises and focuses solely on the dance floor by levitating people with its vicious kick drums, and while "Rawfield" is relatively more playful and uplifting, it is still very much centred around fast percussion stabs and dark dance vibes. Over on the B side, "Rebirth" adds a layer of monophonic bass to the artist's familiar beat crunch, and is followed by "West Bank", a wild and unforgiving punch in the face made up 909 kicks and dubby licks. A powerful affair.

Ambient/Drone
  1. Exploring The North (12:59)
  2. Pinewood Lodge (9:05)
  3. Shot Point (3:04)
Review: Few producers do the dub techno sound better than Rod Modell and on this second Atmospherica instalment, he shows why he is so revered. "Exploring The North" is dense and subdued, the hisses and crackles ebbing and flowing fluidly over a powerful sub-bass. "Pinewood Lodge" is more atmospheric and floaty, its chords flitting about like fireflies over a camp fire on the first night of autumn. Rounding out the release is "Shot Point". Immersive, hypnotic and ghostly, it washes through the speakers like waves crashing on a deserted beach at midnight. This is electronic music that is designed to get lost in.

  1. Fargo (12:32)
  2. CMOS Therapy (7:08)
  3. Night Song (5:55)
Review: The ever-busy Rod Modell has a new album due on Soma later this month. Ahead of that set - his fourth for Slam's long-running label - he's decided to put out this taster 12". Curiously, though Atmospherica Volume 1 doesn't contain any tracks from that album, instead serving up three new treats. 12-minute A-side "Fargo" is undoubtedly the star attraction, offering a chunkier-than-usual take on his weed-enhanced dub techno grooves, paranoid textures and loopy electronics. "CMOS Therapy" is even more up-tempo in feel, with urgent rhythms, surging motifs and notably fizzing cymbals. Finally, "Night Song" sees Modell trek deep into the jungle for inspiration, returning with a muddy chunk of dub techno humidity.

  3. Dark Manoeuvres (Obscure Shape & SHDW remix) (5:53)
  4. Dark Manoeuvres (Tensal remix) (5:39)
Review: British producer Hope Grant is Envoy, a long standing producer who has been around for quite some time, originally starting off in Bizarre Inc; the group that would go on to become Chicken Lips and since 1998 is releasing almost exclusively on Scottish imprint Soma. His breakthrough track "Dark Manoeuvres" was originally released in 2013, first appearing on Carl Cox's FACT mix from the same year which propelled him into the spotlight. This rather Millsian stomper, with its dark orchestral string samples is instantly recognisable and now gets a series of wicked remixes here. Our favourites were Berghain resident Norman Nodge's slowed down and stripped back rendition or, on the contrary, Obscure Shape and SHDW's amped up and powerful version which injects even more melodrama and power into it than the original. Some of you may known Tensal as Hector Sandoval, one half of Spanish power duo Exium. His harder take on hypnotic techno can be heard with his tunnelling remix of the track; a sound which has earned him releases on Pole Group and Modularz.

Review: Legendary Scottish techno imprint Soma rounds off its 25th year with a surprise debut album from Charles Fenckler, a producer who has been associated with the label since 2014. While he does a neat line in slowly unfurling creepiness (see the ambient/IDM opener "Voices In Your Head", and similarly beat-free "Anxiety"), Fenckler specializes in the kind of throbbing, no-nonsense techno that's always gone down well at Soma label parties. This is dense, rhythmic body music - pepped up occasionally by wayward acid lines, ghostly chord progressions and icy aural textures - that puts heavy drums at the heart of the action.
