Review: The Pig Returns! Perma-shades rocking Dutch producer Mike 'Aardvarck' Kivits is something of a figurehead among the Dutch underground, happily flitting between styles across countless albums and 12" releases over a two-decade period. Since nestling in the picturesque climes of Indonesian paradise province Bali, Kivits has developed a bond with Swedish techno outpost Skudge Records which began with his humongous remix of Skudge cut "Convolution" back in 2010. After a couple of Skudge Presents 12"s, a new Aardvarck album lands in the shape of Co In Ci brandishing eight prime Kivits productions. This is the Pig in effervescent, rolling techno mood and a fine addition to a glorious discography.

  4. Track 4 (4:31)
Review: Despite racking up a series of highly rewarding records for the likes of Borft, Skudge, and Tabernacle, Swedish producer Daniel Andreasson is as well regarded as he should be! Maybe this will change with a second 12" for the Skudge White label, NN EP, which features a quartet of productions that show off a different side to Andreasson. If the prospect of Braindance, Scandinavian style appeals then you will you will definitely like this 12". Lead cut "2058" sets the tone for the whole record, combining overworked 909s with heavenly acid-tinged basslines reminiscent of TM404 acid and sampled breaks you'd expect from a Sotofett 'Inna-Jungle-Mix'!

  1. Ruckup (6:51)
  2. Heatseeker (7:08)
  3. Church Pews (6:30)
  4. Moonlit (5:50)
Review: Toronto's Basic Soul Unit is usually known for his soulful Detroit inspired techno and house, so it's interesting to see him step out on tough techno institution Skudge for a change. Keeping in line with the Swedish label's aesthetic, he smashes out some gritty and furious peak time stompers that feature all the hiss and grind of analogue machines that you'd expect by now. On the A side, "Ruckup" is the kind of track you could have almost mistaken for Skudge themselves with its loopy melody and industrial clang and clutter. The grinding and seething "Heatseeer" is really impressive with its restrained broken beat suited for those cool down moments, before it finally unleashes itself in 4/4 glory. On the flip, "Church Pews" features a haunting horror movie style melody and a grinding perc sound over a 8/4 beat while "Moonlit" hammers the message home impressively on this cavernous, immersive and downright evil peak time weapon.

  4. Sunken Mosque (Ulwhednar Airokala remix) (6:19)
Review: It's been some two years since the release of Martin Skogehall and Thomas Jaldemark's debut album under the Fishermen alias. Here, Skudge has decided to give tracks from the album the remix treatment, with an impressive quartet of producers providing new interpretations. Cut Hands kick things off, turning "Serpents" into a spooky chunk of atmospheric, bongo-laden tribal techno that will please fans of his recent BEB output. L.I.E.S man Florian Kupfer provides a fittingly distorted, dubbed out broken techno rework of the same track, before Steve Bicknell delivers goes into thrillingly spacey, hypnotic and intense territory on his rendition of "Dyspnea". Finally, Northern Electronics pair Ulwhednar tackles "Sunken Mosque", focusing the action on deathly electronics, fizzing cymbals and droning, discordant rhythms.

Review: Woof! There's been some major unexplained delays for this latest slab from the Skudge White series but really the wait has been worth it! Low-key producer Cliff Lothar is at the helm, and this record follows a killer issue on I-f's Viewlexx imprint, with the moody electro-inspired sound of the White Savage EP causing one Discogs user to speculate on some connection to the Hague production axis. Lothar's EP for Skudge White has him continuing to develop this sound across four tracks, with the label suggesting the record is a "somewhat darker take on his trade sound." "Tangaxuan II" is supposedly a track "that invokes the early Warp catalogue spirit" while "Audiomess" would be welcome on the B Side of an old Bunker 12".

Review: Over a recording career that has spanned twelve years and around 35 releases, Bristol producer October finally releases a full length album, on Swedish techno imprint Skudge. On Black Body Radiation he shows a new dimension to his sound, forgoing the bass influenced techno he's usually associated with for more of a retro and EBM influenced sound. "Black Narcissist" features a gritty funk bass preset going toe to toe with the pounding groove of a rusty analogue rhythm and soaring guitar feedback. "Body Chant" or "Transient Bodies" are the kind of tough nu-new wave workouts similar to that of Broken English Club or Tzusing. The late night industrial groove of "Slow Release" in particular, is our favourite. Elsewhere, there's some seriously reductionist dub techno, like on "Blood Feud" and some lush beatless atmospherics such as on the closer "Syrup".

Review: When Mysterious Swedish duo Skudge arrived on the scene around six years ago they were usparther of a new breed of techno producers who respectfully borrowed from the past, yet skillfully innovated in the present day. Classics such as "Overture" and "Convolution" as well as their impressive debut LP Phantoms showed a dedication to their craft; employing all analogue studio techniques recorded to tape for true sound authenticity. With the departure of Gustaf Wallnerstrom, the project is now the solo effort of Elias Landberg where on the new Balancing Point LP he proves that he has no problem holding the fort with this collection of purist, surefire techno executions. We particularly enjoyed the emotive stomp of "Air Walk" with its eerie chord progressions, the hypnotic reductionism of "Anode" being a perfect DJ tool to set cruise control, the deep and dubby drifter "Vertigo" being great for the warm up and the funky cyclicality of "Thesis".
