Review: Ever since first appearing on Bristol's Black Acre imprint back in 2009, Kwesi Darko's Blue Daisy project has been hard to pin down. 2011 debut album The Sunday Gift was a triumph of woozy downtempo fusion, with bustling bass music influences rubbing shoulders with folksy elements, ambient, trip-hop and experimental electronica. Following Black Acre's demise, Darko now finds himself on R&S, a label willing to let him follow his unique path. As a result, sophomore album Darker Than Blue is an even more adventurous and enjoyable set than its' predecessor, with Darko adding modern classical, beat poetry and hazy jazz influences to his already heady musical brew.

Review: A new Lone album from Matt Cutler represents an about turn away from the more mellow tones found on 2014's Reality Testing back in favour for the rave tropes that characterised his output circa Pineapple Crush. The nine tracks on Levitate are rife with the energetic fervour of hardcore and jungle, blending peppy tempos and nimble drum licks with the trademark graceful melodies one would expect from a Lone record. You should be familiar with "Backtail Was Heavy," already been premiered via a phone line service and "Vapour Trail" which formally announced Levitate and the other seven cuts from Lone show Cutler is at the top of his game.

Review: **REPRESS** Bringing his madcap colourful styles back to R&S once again, Lone has another slice of sunkissed wonderment to impart, this time in a concise two track single. "Airglow Fires" leads in on the most joyous choral pads, only to be surpassed by even more bright and bold chord stabs which tell you this is going to be a party rocker. The beat comes ripping in to bounce off that opening riff and of course it flexes with a dexterity of unconventional means that reassures you Lone is in no danger of going soft any time soon. There is perhaps a more linear flow to the track which is no bad thing, making for a more focused and reliable party starter whilst retaining that inimitable Lone kink. "Begin To Begin" is less outre in its intentions, but equally funky as it hops around on a snagged house groove while the melodies chime out all around the depth and breadth of the mix.

Review: On the basis of this latest Lone long player, Matthew Cutler seems to be mellowing with age. Having earned a belated breakthrough on the back of a number of rush-inducing, rainbow-coloured releases for R&S that saw him surging towards the dancefloor like a toddler high on cheap orange squash, the producer once again flips the script on Reality Testing. The hardcore and rave influences of recent years have largely been abandoned in favour of smooth, head-nodding hip-hop beats, stargazing chords, twinkling melodies and far-sighted atmospherics. It is, in many ways, a return to his roots. More importantly, it's also very good, delivering synth-laden warmth and hazy, laidback grooves by the barrow load.

Review: Much was written about The Gamble, the debut album from the Nils Frahm-helmed experimental electronica trio, Nonkeen. While that set took almost 10 years to come to fruition, this follow-up appears a few short months after its' acclaimed predecessor. As you might expect, it explores similar musical territory, blending experimental elements (backwards loops, crackly textures, found sound etc.) with off-kilter jazz breaks, hazy Rhodes solos, trippy ambient interludes, occasional blasts of military percussion, and grandiose, post-Balearic mood-scapes. While hard to pin down stylistically, there's a hazy, freshly baked vibe throughout, with the trio's desire to blend live instrumentation and electronics being a particularly consistent presence.

Review: There's no stopping Nils Frahm. This latest project has its' origins in his Hamburg school days, when the acclaimed pianist would spend many happy nights making experimental jams with friends Frederic Gmeiner and Sepp Singwald. The Gamble, the trio's debut album, has therefore been a long time coming. Mixing dreamy electronics, smoky beats, manipulated tape recordings and Frahm's trademark keys-work - think Rhodes, Clavinet and piano - the album sits somewhere between the hazy late night jazz of The Cinematic Orchestra, classic ambient, IDM and bustling trip-hop. It is, as you'd expect from a talent such as Frahm, an impeccably produced and hugely atmospheric journey.

Review: The Nils Frahm-fronted Nonkeen have taken the R&S fanbase by surprise thanks to their debut album The Gamble. While the imprint has been heavily associated with contemporary techno and driving post-dubstep over the last five years, Nonkeen seems like a breath of fresh air, and also the perfect way to meander into different sorts of sounds and genres. "Animal Farm" and "Chasing God Through Palmyra" are taken from the debut album for easier DJ playback; the former is a murky, dubbed-out lo-fi drum jam that has more in common with African Head Charge than Gilles Peterson, and the latter carries that same kind of jab-ridden spirit through to a more stable strain of pseudo 4/4 that'll work wonders in the midst of a wide-eyed house set. A truly recommended piece of work from the label.

Review: R&S seem to be in the midst of a curveball period at the moment; issuing the latest edition of Nico Jaar's Nymph series of singles, signing up tech house dons Tale Of Us, scoring a killer album from Blue Daisy. This wonderfully unpredictable streak continues apace here as Paula Temple terrorises "Roadblox", a cut off the recent album from Essex rave legends The Prodigy. It's an almighty clash of the P's with Temple realigning the original's drum and bass bombast into a full throttle techno monster. There's an instrumental too if you want all the wall shaking impact without the vocal gristle from Maxim.

Review: In a fit of complex hybrid future funk, Second Storey and Appleblim consolidate their first three EPs for R&S into a long player that shows the full breadth of their sound in glorious technicolour. It's a thrilling world full of contorting shapes, glossy melodies and large doses of psychoactive fairy tale ingredients, with a gutsy techno heart pulsing away at the centre. Hearing all the tracks in one sitting gives a worthwhile context to the artists vision as they contort in and amongst each other, while new piece "Arpegmonger" opens the album in utterly glorious fashion. Craftily blending the notion of home-listening music and dancefloor madness, ALSO will have you twitching wherever it infects you.

Review: Boxed baron and all-round Slackker Paul Lynch builds on last year's EP Backwards Light for R&S with another sextet of instrumental grime distillations... Tech-influenced, spatially aware and a fine balance of dreamland synths and paranoid, cold dynamics; his signatures should be known to anyone with a passing fancy in future beat music and they're strong then ever right here: The freezer strings of "Swan Filters", the crushed off-beat riff and deep cave echoes of "Skeleton Crew", the tsunami waves of "Pigeons", the estranged synth boogie of "Hundred Flute", the shuffled take on classic electro that is "Replenish" and the final introverted eastern adieu "Returning Geese" all add up to an EP that genuinely stands out in the current sea of creativity instrumental grime is enjoying right now.

Review: When announcing the release of Love Over Will, Alex Smoke described it as: "a statement on the times we are living in, but with an optimism relating to ways forward that are possible". Certainly, the producer's fourth solo album - his first for six years - offers an impeccable balance between dark and light moods. Stylistically, it blends many of his familiar themes and influences - moody techno, beguiling ambient, American classical minimalism, Drexciya-influenced electro - with a stylish, alternative 1980s synth-pop sensibility. It's a blend that's initially surprising, but wholly successful. For the most part, it sounds like early Depeche Mode dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century, via such electronic music hotspots as Detroit, Rotterdam, Berlin and, of course, Glasgow.

Review:  Returning to R&S for another bout of nail-biting techno propulsion, Paula Temple is in no mood to take it easy on Deathvox. The title track bucks and jerks like a goliath in restraints, the juggernaut rhythm bolstered by the kind of demonic synth wails that made AFX's "Elephant Song" such an effective nightmare vision. "Monstro" may come on in more melodic tones, but the intro is equally a ruse for a tough industrial piston pump of drums and distortion has handled by a professional. It's on "Ful" that Temple really allows you to catch your breath with a more evenly tempered rhythm section and broad sweeps of synth that call to mind the melancholy of early Autechre.

Review: Fresh from the African diversions of his 12" with Nozinja on Bleep, Tessela returns to R&S with more of that singular club-wrecking business. "Bottom Out" is a wild track that pivots round a crisp, flanging clap and a teasingly restrained groove, letting in plenty of alien sound effects without ever letting the mix get overloaded. "Total Music" by way of contrast ploughs deeper into experimental territory with its lurid synth blasts and disturbing sample sources as freaky addendum to the release. Kowton is on hand to remix "Bottom Out" with a more energised approach that keeps the beat peppy until some audacious melt down moments surge up to throw you off the scent.

Review: After the absolute devastation of Nancy's Pantry it's all eyes on Tessela to see how he follows up that particular monster of a release on R&S. The chances are if you've been on a dancefloor commanded by one of the edgier bass-orientated spinners of late you will have heard "Rough 2" laying waste with its killer staggered snare hook, lurid synth line and bludgeoning bass thrusts. "Butchwax" takes a less pronounced approach with a jagged approach to sample triggering that calls to mind Art Of Noise, and then "C'mon Let's Slow Dance" weirds the whole EP out with some fringe electronics that try desperately to cling on to a beat.

Review: R&S add further credence to their potential label of the year status with this release from Hemlock decision maker Untold. After letting this EP soak in over the course of an afternoon, we feel the two tracks here might just edge out CMYK and Temporary Thrillz as our favourite from the imprint in 2010. Perfectly befitting for his debut on the iconic label, "Stereo Freeze" sees Jack Dunning update the Detroit techno sonic template with brutal results. A track characterised by demonic frequencies of sub bass, this is a twisted sensory journey that peaks and lulls brilliantly, and defies any sense of genre categorisation. This outright lairiness is complemented by the B Side missive "Mass Dreams Of The Future" which is the brilliant sonic offspring of Underground Resistance and the more rugged end of funky. A vast array of rave stabs and deft bass twists are the perfect melodic accompaniment to a brand new yet retro house beat pattern. This marks another fine chapter in an annus mirabulus for the reinvigorated Belgian label.

Review: Everyone's favourite band named after a park in Amsterdam return with another gem from their acclaimed album Seabed. Yearning, textured and just a touch trippy, their Roxy-meets-Jono McLeery sound resonates with a deep dreaminess. Remix-wise Bullion shows his most sensitive side with distant jazzy breakbeats, faraway guitar plucks and great subversion on the vocal harmonies. Factory Floor, meanwhile, represent things in more angular fashion with a crisp acid edge and beautiful build dynamics. A very versatile package.
