Review: The collaborator of choice for James Blake, Airhead has been wisely taking his time to develop on his own terms, sticking largely to his preferred stable at Brainmath to release his unique brand of utterly decayed 21st century beat music. Now though he steps up to R&S with a delicate 2-tracker that sees his burgeoning sound get a touch more full-bodied. "Wait" highlights the man's guitar talents, letting languid notes ring out over a typically deconstructed beat. "South Congress" however echoes Art of Noise and other such elegant experimentalists in its bombastic composition. Highly recommended.

Review: Ever since first appearing on Bristol's Black Acre imprint back in 2009, Kwesi Darko's Blue Daisy project has been hard to pin down. 2011 debut album The Sunday Gift was a triumph of woozy downtempo fusion, with bustling bass music influences rubbing shoulders with folksy elements, ambient, trip-hop and experimental electronica. Following Black Acre's demise, Darko now finds himself on R&S, a label willing to let him follow his unique path. As a result, sophomore album Darker Than Blue is an even more adventurous and enjoyable set than its' predecessor, with Darko adding modern classical, beat poetry and hazy jazz influences to his already heady musical brew.

Review: Irish duo Lakker have been on something of an epic musical journey over the last decade, beginning life as an experimental noise and industrial outfit (delivering an overlooked debut album in that style back in 2007), before expanding their sound to take in a far wider range of sounds and influences via 12" singles for Blueprint, Candela Rising and R&S. Here, they deliver their sophomore set, Tundra, a collection of intoxicating, atmospheric electronic compositions that joins the dots between early Aphex Twin style IDM chaos, creeping electronica, dystopian ambience and Actress style machine jams. It's hardly the cheeriest record you'll hear this year, but it's certainly a very good one. It suggests that we'll be hearing a lot more from Lakker in years to come.

Review: After another impressive 2013 that saw label debuts from the likes of Paula Temple, dBridge, Alex Smoke and Tessela, as well as a debut album from Space Dimension Controller, Lakker are set to join the R&S fray with Containing A Thousand EP. Lakker will no doubt be delighted at landing a record deal with R&S as the two have been quoted on numerous occasions citing Aphex Twin, a R&S regular back in the day, as a major influence on their productions. That said, they've delivered their own individual sound to R&S, that, for the most part sounds like rusted robots rising to life out of a misty swamp, particularly the lurch of "Mausoleum" and injured sprint of "Thermohaline". There's a Stroboscopic Artefacts sound to the title track, while "Kantu" is rhythmic, tribal, and metallic. This is arguably their best release yet.

Review: R&S Records gave us a rather fine prelude to Galaxy Garden, Lone's debut album, in the form of the resplendent rave of Crystal Caverns 1991. A true highlight of that set, "Crystal Caverns 1991" is reminiscent of the producer's former glory "Pineapple Crush", though there's a lot more rhythmic intricacy at play here. Kicking off a breakstep beat with those sweet but punchy 90s synths that Cutler is renowned for, the track cuts into a deadly rave motif without so much as a pause in the beat and it's like being back in, er, 1991. The B Side "Vulcan Mill Acid" is equally self explanatory, an alien 303 workout with added cowbell that slips into steel pan territory without any of the wetness of a Jammy xx production.

Review: On the basis of this latest Lone long player, Matthew Cutler seems to be mellowing with age. Having earned a belated breakthrough on the back of a number of rush-inducing, rainbow-coloured releases for R&S that saw him surging towards the dancefloor like a toddler high on cheap orange squash, the producer once again flips the script on Reality Testing. The hardcore and rave influences of recent years have largely been abandoned in favour of smooth, head-nodding hip-hop beats, stargazing chords, twinkling melodies and far-sighted atmospherics. It is, in many ways, a return to his roots. More importantly, it's also very good, delivering synth-laden warmth and hazy, laidback grooves by the barrow load.

Review: There's no stopping Nils Frahm. This latest project has its' origins in his Hamburg school days, when the acclaimed pianist would spend many happy nights making experimental jams with friends Frederic Gmeiner and Sepp Singwald. The Gamble, the trio's debut album, has therefore been a long time coming. Mixing dreamy electronics, smoky beats, manipulated tape recordings and Frahm's trademark keys-work - think Rhodes, Clavinet and piano - the album sits somewhere between the hazy late night jazz of The Cinematic Orchestra, classic ambient, IDM and bustling trip-hop. It is, as you'd expect from a talent such as Frahm, an impeccably produced and hugely atmospheric journey.

Review: Biff! Two bass juggernauts team up for a three tracker on the infamous R&S imprint! Alec Storey aka Second Storey and Laurie Osborne aka Appleblim might be some years apart in terms of production experience but they certainly share the same passion and love for bass-heavy dancefloor cuts. The former has been busy releasing on London's Houndstooth while the latter deserves no introduction due to his important contribution in dubstep's twilight years. "Raves" is a percussion-heavy monster with wobbly low-ends; "Blyford Bass" is a stop-start head-jerker with another swell of bass circling around its epicentre, while "Pgs" is a gorgeous hard ambient track with subtle bursts of percussion and bass. Winner! Look out for their upcoming LP for R&S!

Review: In a fit of complex hybrid future funk, Second Storey and Appleblim consolidate their first three EPs for R&S into a long player that shows the full breadth of their sound in glorious technicolour. It's a thrilling world full of contorting shapes, glossy melodies and large doses of psychoactive fairy tale ingredients, with a gutsy techno heart pulsing away at the centre. Hearing all the tracks in one sitting gives a worthwhile context to the artists vision as they contort in and amongst each other, while new piece "Arpegmonger" opens the album in utterly glorious fashion. Craftily blending the notion of home-listening music and dancefloor madness, ALSO will have you twitching wherever it infects you.

Review: We have no idea who Shanghai Den is beyond the fact that he/she/they supposedly hail from Cyprus, has a fondness for opium, and made their debut on a collaboration with Falty DL for a Ninja Tune 10" released back in January. Here Shanghai Den resurfaces in illustrious fashion with a full debut for R&S Records with two tracks that share a fair few similarities with the work of the aforementioned Drew Lustman. It's most apparent in the manner that Shanghai Den marries brushed garage-influenced rhythms and woofer-bothering bass with a uniquely Eastern tone. With R&S offerings falling mainly in the techno camp of late, this is a welcome surprise.

Review: When announcing the release of Love Over Will, Alex Smoke described it as: "a statement on the times we are living in, but with an optimism relating to ways forward that are possible". Certainly, the producer's fourth solo album - his first for six years - offers an impeccable balance between dark and light moods. Stylistically, it blends many of his familiar themes and influences - moody techno, beguiling ambient, American classical minimalism, Drexciya-influenced electro - with a stylish, alternative 1980s synth-pop sensibility. It's a blend that's initially surprising, but wholly successful. For the most part, it sounds like early Depeche Mode dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century, via such electronic music hotspots as Detroit, Rotterdam, Berlin and, of course, Glasgow.

Review: House music's biggest act of the moment return with more of their signature style of dark journey tracks, this time for the legendary R&S Records. The moody and tunnelling "North Star" features all the elements you've come to expect from Conte and Milleri; layer upon layer of lush melodies, sinister atmospherics and a beat that chugs away like a steam train through the darklands. "Silent Space" is a bit more straight ahead; a rather pounding techno number with snarling synth leads zooming above hissy, white noise infused high hats, thunderous toms and dark strings. It has all the essentials for a track that will devastate a dancefloor near you soon.

Review: Fresh from the African diversions of his 12" with Nozinja on Bleep, Tessela returns to R&S with more of that singular club-wrecking business. "Bottom Out" is a wild track that pivots round a crisp, flanging clap and a teasingly restrained groove, letting in plenty of alien sound effects without ever letting the mix get overloaded. "Total Music" by way of contrast ploughs deeper into experimental territory with its lurid synth blasts and disturbing sample sources as freaky addendum to the release. Kowton is on hand to remix "Bottom Out" with a more energised approach that keeps the beat peppy until some audacious melt down moments surge up to throw you off the scent.

Review: After the absolute devastation of Nancy's Pantry it's all eyes on Tessela to see how he follows up that particular monster of a release on R&S. The chances are if you've been on a dancefloor commanded by one of the edgier bass-orientated spinners of late you will have heard "Rough 2" laying waste with its killer staggered snare hook, lurid synth line and bludgeoning bass thrusts. "Butchwax" takes a less pronounced approach with a jagged approach to sample triggering that calls to mind Art Of Noise, and then "C'mon Let's Slow Dance" weirds the whole EP out with some fringe electronics that try desperately to cling on to a beat.

Review: R&S add further credence to their potential label of the year status with this release from Hemlock decision maker Untold. After letting this EP soak in over the course of an afternoon, we feel the two tracks here might just edge out CMYK and Temporary Thrillz as our favourite from the imprint in 2010. Perfectly befitting for his debut on the iconic label, "Stereo Freeze" sees Jack Dunning update the Detroit techno sonic template with brutal results. A track characterised by demonic frequencies of sub bass, this is a twisted sensory journey that peaks and lulls brilliantly, and defies any sense of genre categorisation. This outright lairiness is complemented by the B Side missive "Mass Dreams Of The Future" which is the brilliant sonic offspring of Underground Resistance and the more rugged end of funky. A vast array of rave stabs and deft bass twists are the perfect melodic accompaniment to a brand new yet retro house beat pattern. This marks another fine chapter in an annus mirabulus for the reinvigorated Belgian label.
