  3. Lavender (5:21)
Review: Amidst all the rightfully celebrated contributions to the R&S revival from James Blake and Space Dimension Controller last year, the punishing dancefloor update of the label's sonic template from Hemlock boss Untold was sort of passed by. Hailing from Barnsley, Blawan becomes the latest rising talent to appear on the iconic Belgian imprint, and takes his cue from Jack Dunning, fully embracing the 303 sound that characterised the label in its pomp and delivering three thrilling tracks that further demonstrate the budding potential shown on his Hessle Audio debut. Lead track "Bohla" sets the tone, crafting a menacing rhythmic swing from a titular growl and smudged bass drums, with intermittent upwards swirls of 303 constantly building and dropping off. "Kaz" proves to be brilliantly schizophrenic in its approach, with intricate drum rhythms cascading around whilst acid lines twist in ten different directions across almost seven freakout-inducing minutes. What really impresses with Blawan is an innate talent for unique rhythms and it's most apparent on the abrasive delight of "Lavender", with rattling percussion covered in a thick viscous bassline truffle shuffle.

Review: Ever since first appearing on Bristol's Black Acre imprint back in 2009, Kwesi Darko's Blue Daisy project has been hard to pin down. 2011 debut album The Sunday Gift was a triumph of woozy downtempo fusion, with bustling bass music influences rubbing shoulders with folksy elements, ambient, trip-hop and experimental electronica. Following Black Acre's demise, Darko now finds himself on R&S, a label willing to let him follow his unique path. As a result, sophomore album Darker Than Blue is an even more adventurous and enjoyable set than its' predecessor, with Darko adding modern classical, beat poetry and hazy jazz influences to his already heady musical brew.

Review: Some critics thought Lakker's R&S debut, February's Containing A Thousand, may well have been the Irish techno duo's finest moment to date. That's open to debate, but it was certainly an impressive set. This follow-up is equally as impressive. "Mountain Divide" may be marked by a thrillingly off-kilter rhythm and bouncy, Drexciyan bass, but it's the wall-of-sound samples and swirling, hard-to-fathom atmospherics that catch the ear. "Math Fall" is a little sparser in feel, with gentle melodies wrapping themselves around a jumpy, post-dubstep rhythm. Finally, "Monla" is an enjoyable trip into fuzzy ambient territory - think Selected Ambient Works-era Aphex Twin - where dreams quickly turn into nightmares.

Review: Irish duo Lakker return to R&S with Struggle & Emerge, an eight-track release somewhere between EP and mini-album driven by a unique concept. The RE:VIVE Initiative approached Dara Smith and Ian McDonnell to create a new work using archive field recordings and broadcasts from the Dutch national archive as the source material, all focused on the theme of "the Dutch and water". Considering the low-lying nature of the topography in the Netherlands, it's a pertinent subject for the country, and so Lakker spent time meeting academic experts in order to learn more about the issues behind this theme. Issues relating to the Second World War and the scale of Dutch flood defences all reportedly came into play, resulting in eight tracks that continue Lakker's uncompromising style even with a very different starting point to their previous releases.

Review: A new Lone album from Matt Cutler represents an about turn away from the more mellow tones found on 2014's Reality Testing back in favour for the rave tropes that characterised his output circa Pineapple Crush. The nine tracks on Levitate are rife with the energetic fervour of hardcore and jungle, blending peppy tempos and nimble drum licks with the trademark graceful melodies one would expect from a Lone record. You should be familiar with "Backtail Was Heavy," already been premiered via a phone line service and "Vapour Trail" which formally announced Levitate and the other seven cuts from Lone show Cutler is at the top of his game.

Review: Much was written about The Gamble, the debut album from the Nils Frahm-helmed experimental electronica trio, Nonkeen. While that set took almost 10 years to come to fruition, this follow-up appears a few short months after its' acclaimed predecessor. As you might expect, it explores similar musical territory, blending experimental elements (backwards loops, crackly textures, found sound etc.) with off-kilter jazz breaks, hazy Rhodes solos, trippy ambient interludes, occasional blasts of military percussion, and grandiose, post-Balearic mood-scapes. While hard to pin down stylistically, there's a hazy, freshly baked vibe throughout, with the trio's desire to blend live instrumentation and electronics being a particularly consistent presence.

Review: In a fit of complex hybrid future funk, Second Storey and Appleblim consolidate their first three EPs for R&S into a long player that shows the full breadth of their sound in glorious technicolour. It's a thrilling world full of contorting shapes, glossy melodies and large doses of psychoactive fairy tale ingredients, with a gutsy techno heart pulsing away at the centre. Hearing all the tracks in one sitting gives a worthwhile context to the artists vision as they contort in and amongst each other, while new piece "Arpegmonger" opens the album in utterly glorious fashion. Craftily blending the notion of home-listening music and dancefloor madness, ALSO will have you twitching wherever it infects you.

  3. Tommy Knockers
  4. Oni
Review: The past two releases by Alex Smoke have seen the Glaswegian make a big splash in the noisy pool that's R&S Records, but throughout all tracks on this EP there's the subtlest of synth-pop motifs centred inside a hard outer shell of techno. The wet acid and half-broken beats of "Green Man" sound like a futuristic combination of a Sisters Of Mercy instrumental mixed with Thom Yorke-style vocals funnelled into a circular Alex Smoke rhythm, while there's an Egyptian feel to the light tech house of "LSD". "Tommy Knockers" is the EP's high energy dance track, with detuned synths creating a melodic havoc in the background while "Oni" again remains on a Middle Eastern tip, this time with flecks of rave and a big serving of industrial atmospheric and percussion.

Review: When announcing the release of Love Over Will, Alex Smoke described it as: "a statement on the times we are living in, but with an optimism relating to ways forward that are possible". Certainly, the producer's fourth solo album - his first for six years - offers an impeccable balance between dark and light moods. Stylistically, it blends many of his familiar themes and influences - moody techno, beguiling ambient, American classical minimalism, Drexciya-influenced electro - with a stylish, alternative 1980s synth-pop sensibility. It's a blend that's initially surprising, but wholly successful. For the most part, it sounds like early Depeche Mode dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century, via such electronic music hotspots as Detroit, Rotterdam, Berlin and, of course, Glasgow.

Review:  Returning to R&S for another bout of nail-biting techno propulsion, Paula Temple is in no mood to take it easy on Deathvox. The title track bucks and jerks like a goliath in restraints, the juggernaut rhythm bolstered by the kind of demonic synth wails that made AFX's "Elephant Song" such an effective nightmare vision. "Monstro" may come on in more melodic tones, but the intro is equally a ruse for a tough industrial piston pump of drums and distortion has handled by a professional. It's on "Ful" that Temple really allows you to catch your breath with a more evenly tempered rhythm section and broad sweeps of synth that call to mind the melancholy of early Autechre.

  3. Cloned
Review: The enigmatic Paula Temple returns to techno with a vengeance, supplying R&S with the surprising (and quite shameful) first release from a female artist! Colonized sees the hark back to their techno roots by supplying the seminal imprint with some with hard hitting industrial-edged techno in the manner of recent releases from MPIA3 and Blawan. Temple however is not by any means a new name, with her first release coming via Chris McCormack's Materials label in 2002, receiving rapacious support from Claude Young, Dave Clark and Jeff Mills whilst she has also released under the Fragile X and Jaguar Woman names. The Colonized EP sees Temple move away from the faster and melodic stylings of her previous work, and delivering two slabs of brutal industrialism instead. Though there's a bullish brutality present, Temple does show moments of reflection and serenity, particularly in the title track, which Perc reworks with gravelly rhythmic mechanics and metallic textures.

  2. Mass Dreams Of The Future
Review: R&S add further credence to their potential label of the year status with this release from Hemlock decision maker Untold. After letting this EP soak in over the course of an afternoon, we feel the two tracks here might just edge out CMYK and Temporary Thrillz as our favourite from the imprint in 2010. Perfectly befitting for his debut on the iconic label, "Stereo Freeze" sees Jack Dunning update the Detroit techno sonic template with brutal results. A track characterised by demonic frequencies of sub bass, this is a twisted sensory journey that peaks and lulls brilliantly, and defies any sense of genre categorisation. This outright lairiness is complemented by the B Side missive "Mass Dreams Of The Future" which is the brilliant sonic offspring of Underground Resistance and the more rugged end of funky. A vast array of rave stabs and deft bass twists are the perfect melodic accompaniment to a brand new yet retro house beat pattern. This marks another fine chapter in an annus mirabulus for the reinvigorated Belgian label.
