Central EP (transparent green vinyl 12")
Cat: PLZ 014. Rel: 19 Jan 15
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Tripolo
  2. Central
  3. ZDZ
  4. Rez
Review: Arriving on rather eye catching green vinyl, the Central EP represents a welcome return to the Pleasure Zone for CTRL some two years after the mysterious artist first made his appearance on the label. We didn't know who CTRL was then and we certainly don't now, but such minor distractions should not get in the way of what is simply some fine minimal techno! Already supported by messrs Villalobos and Raresh, the four tracks from CTRL here are all distinguished by an undeniably funky grasp of how to programme drums. The arid opener "Tripolo" also possesses sublime chords that are redolent of classic Chicago house, whilst the broken rhythms and tumbling textures of "Rez" will no doubt be wholly effective when deployed in the dance!

  3. Lyric Beats (arena version) (6:15)
  4. There (7:46)
Review: The third edition edition of Frankfurt label Pleasure Zone's new limited series belongs to mainstay Ali Nasser from Romania, who serves up a smooth, rolling and ethereal groove on the great opener "Lyric Beat". Things get more uptempo and driven on the infectiously reductionist groove of "The Calling", which we particularly enjoyed for its angelic vocals that sound reminiscent of Cassy. On the flip, "Lyric Beats (arena version)" gets much darker, dubby and rhythmic; this abstract number is deep and will appeal to fans of Vid. Finally "There" gets some delightfully snappy breaks in, over a rolling groove that's just perfect for after-hours shenanigans.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Lat Exx (7:58)
  2. Co Dru (9:15)
Review: Soll's enigmatic persona since his first release on Germany's Pleasure Zone earlier this year has added to our interest in the man's minimalistic house beats. "Lat Exx" is a simple, stripped-back affair surrounded by seductive vocal snippets and wavey bleeps, the sort fo tune you'd imagine Villalobos grinding out mid-set on a sweaty dancefloor. The B-side, "Co Dru", is relatively more upbeat and melodic, where Soll's laid-back approach is given a gentle stir of the senses, an injection of subtle funk among the bleakness of his usual approach.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Unindivid
  2. Understand
  3. Sunt
  4. Partita AB
Review: With just a few releases behind them, it's hard to fully ascertain what Pleasure Zone have in store with each successive 12", but it's clear from Vid & Cumsecade that it'll be anything but straight-forward. "Unindivid" is a feather-light deep house cut with a crafty swing to the delicate drums while the chords form a gentle hum that makes a refreshing change from obvious bluesy stabs. "Understand" is more austere still, letting rippling textures of machine noise sputter out in highly quantised arrangements. "Sunt" gets decidedly dubby with the delay feedback in full effect on the snare, while "Partita AB" enters a more uneasy space with an erratic melody creaking out through a distorting tone generator.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Track 1 (5:00)
  2. Track 2 (5:38)
  3. Track 3 (6:41)
Review: Otherworldly sounds: longstanding Moscow machine musician Anton Zap returns with three deep-furrowed cuts that stand so alone they don't need titles... "Track 1" is a hypnotic drum track with a ricochet funk pinging back and forth across the spectrum, "Track 2" is a much denser piece of work with tripped-out textures and FX delicately layered to reveal a morphing, shifting, slightly unnerving technoid picture while "Track 3" closes with a calming acid tonic washed back with deep faltering pads a warm beat that shuffles from here to ULAS J0015+01. Far out.
