Review: Canadian musician Tristan Douglas first made his name with a slew of digital releases for netlabels like Cocobass and B.YRSLF Division under the name Margaret Antwood. A clear pun on the celebrated poet from his homeland, Douglas has perhaps wisely chosen to lose the Margaret and move forward as Antwood. Getting picked up by Mike Paradinas, Douglas delivers his debut LP as Antwood in Virtuous .scr and delves into the darker recesses of the internet. AI is a central theme to the album's 12 tracks, specifically the idea of whether or not an AI can have a set of ethics, whilst sonic reference points could be video game music and anime soundtracks.

Review: One of the earliest wave ambassadors to enjoy large label accreditation, Sami Baha delivers his first full Mu EP and doesn't disappoint: "Mavericks One" is laden with so much sub bass it's clinically obese while its topline remains slim-line and floaty. Deeper into the EP we're seduced by oriental charm throughout; "Still" and "Dough" massage the soul while "Tozko Paran" twists the senses with trippy Q&As that shouldn't work but really do. "Cataphract" plays the consummate slow-trap club bumper while "Chunk" pays homage to all the fatties out there with its restrained energy and delicate arpeggio-led dynamic. A stunning debut EP for Mu.

Review: This year sees Planet Mu celebrate its 20th anniversary at the forefront of UK electronics and in Excerpts the label has potentially secured one of the year's best albums. If you are unfamiliar with John T. Gast, that's not surprising as the London-based artist has largely preferred to operate in the shadows; he's been involved in music from erstwhile tricksters Hype Williams whilst his own music has largely appeared in limited CDr format. Planet Mu have given little away in advance of Excerpts being released, aside from a brief, obscure statement by Gast, and maybe that's a ploy to ensure you come to the album without expectations. Once you come out the other side, you'll be left dizzy with praise for a striking album that veers in many different directions yet sounds wholly cohesive.

Review: Given the quality of Herva's last full-length, the Delsin-released Instant Broadcast, hopes are naturally high for this follow-up on Planet Mu. Kila was apparently produced using hardware and software modified by the Italian producer himself, as well as his usual weird and wonderful array of bizarre but brilliant samples. The result is a distinctive, thrillingly varied set that effortlessly blitzes hip-hop, house, techno, IDM, broken beat, bass music, ambient, glitch-hop and acid-fried electronica into a deliciously wild audio soup. It's arguably a little more soulful and curiously positive than previous outings, but retains his trademark wonkiness. Either way, it's arguably the last great album of 2015.

Review: Following on from his debut artist album Cyclical in 2008, Brighton based producer, Ital Tek brings us his sophomore outing, Midnight Colour on the highly respected Planet Mu imprint. Kicking off with "Neon Arc" - a deliciously fuzzy broody number, with a nod to the Joker-style 'Bristol Sound' in the synths - it's a promising start to what soon unfolds into a magnificent album. Moving through the melodic, reflective Mount Kimbie style "Talis" with its evocatively drawn dripping and chiming, and hollow textured soundscape, to the more abrasive "Moonbow" and "Babylon", it's easy to see why Ital Tek has garnered such a reputation for himself in such a short time. Midnight Colour picks up on the sound that has come to define Ital Tek, taking the whole 'post-dubstep' tip to new lengths, weaving 2-stepping garage rhythms round sonic textures with plenty of moody atmospheric melancholy.

Review: Brighton-based synth-step explorer Alan Myson is nothing if not prolific; Nebula Dance is his third full-length in five years. Like previous excursions, Nebula Dance sees him attempting to join the dots between dubstep rhythms, synth-wave melodies, clattering IDM grooves and the shimmering sweeps of classic electronica. It's a sound dripping with positivity, and the result is an album that somehow manages to sound both self-consciously grandiose and impressively intimate. Tracks like "Intercruise" and "Glokk" bristle with retina-sharp melodies and glistening electronics, all atop rhythms that are seemingly pulling you in different directions. It's a delicious combination, that's for sure.

Review: Planet Mu usher in the return of Ital Tek and a new sonic approach for the long-term label associate, as Hollowed finds Alan Myson switching up his approach. The chance to immerse himself in a new studio set up was the impetus for Myson to engage in laying down countless hours' worth of loops, drones and textures. It is apparently a method he used as a teenager, but armed with years of recording experience he was now able to make the record he had then envisaged. Fans of the crisp style of dubstep Ital Tek made his name on might be a bit taken aback by this new direction, but there is plenty of fine music to explore here for those that like their sounds abstract and impressionistic.

Review: Wow, this is quite some album from Planet Mu! You may not be so familiar with Jlin, a footwork producer with a couple of contributions to the second Bangs & Works compilation Planet Mu released, but the Indiana based artist is quite the talent on the basis of Dark Energy. Jlin has gone on record to say this album has been in gestation from some time and explores darker themes than you would usually get on a footwork album. There's a real confidence to her productions at times on this album, "Black Diamond" in particular has a wonderful swagger to its syncopation, and in "Expand" Jlin offers an intriguing collaboration with RVNG Intl's resident voice manipulator Holly Herndon.

Review: Jlin's debut LP on Planet Mu last year, the aptly named Dark Energy, was a top pick from us, and it's no wonder that the label have decided to pick her up again for a follow-up EP. There is only one way to describe this album, and that is as 'tribal juke', a sound that is fast becoming trademarked by Jlin, and one that has the potential to appeal to bass heads and Chicago house heads alike. This woman's stuff is definitely an ode to the great DJ Rashad, but Jlin goes beyond the usual tricks by adding in elements of rhythmic noise, drone and London grime. "BuZilla" is particularly reminiscent of the gear championed by Plastician back in the early 2000s. A big ol' tip for this one!

Review: In an age where blandness afflicts the form within electronic music, Planet Mu seem to have hit a groove for issuing quite distinct album projects of late; see recent outings on the label from Herva, Yearning Kru, Antwood and Ital Tek. Old Apparatus member Asher Levitas continues this hot streak with Lit Harness, a debut solo album that sees the producer working extensively with regular visual collaborator Michael Crowe and Kull vocalist Marina Elderton. Lit Harness is a most immersive experience with Levitas easing the listener into a hallucinogenic dream-like state over the course of eight tracks, the crackling choral ambience of his productions a perfect foil for Elderton's incandescent voice.

Review: Curve ball release of the week goes to Planet Mu with Mercury, the debut LP from the Miracle pairing of Steve Moore and Guapo's Daniel O'Sullivan. Best known for his luscious and at times transcendental output on LIES, Future Times and Death Waltz, Steve Moore is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished (and prolific) composers to surface out of the US synth underground. Apparently first crossing paths with O'Sullivan back in 2006 when the pair were touring in their respective bands Zombi and Guapo, Mercury is the result of some four years of musical collaboration. Planet Mu describe the nine track set as a collection of "anthemic power ballads" and as soon as O'Sullivan's vocals kick in you'll find it hard to disagree though Moore's musicianship is just as integral a part and shines through on the arpeggio heavy "Falling Into The Night" which also perhaps best captures Miracle's dual inspiration of 80s cinema classic The Lost Boys and Giallo horror.

Vercetti, Lovedr0id & Chemist, Silk Road Assassins previously featured on the exhaustive label compilation Planet Mu put out last year and contributed to the Peace Edits 12? on Gobstopper too. The Reflection Spaces 12" represents their debut release proper, and sees the trio investigate a loose narrative theme based around a "retro-futuristic/dystopian city, with development into game music in mind" across seven evocative soundscapes. If you maintain any semblance of interest in current strains of instrumental grime you should be all over this!

Review: With a name inspired by a Russian science fiction novel by Andrei Tarkovsky, not to mention a shared love of world cinema, there was never any chance of Solar Bears' sophomore album being anything but a left-of-centre gem. Supermigration melds picturesque electronics and vintage Italo influences to intricate, soundtrack-influenced atmospherics and warm, Morricone-ish melodies. It's a wonderful mix, and one that produces a series of stunning compositions, from the Balearic bagginess of "Love Is All" and soaring intensity of "Our Future Is Underground", to the heart-aching mournfulness of "You & Me (Subterranean Cycles)" and chugging, John Carpenter-on-pills rush of "Komplex".

Review: After his first album marked a decisive step forward for footwork as a music form, Traxman is back with a second volume that builds on those successes with even more exotic sound sources that reach far beyond the ghetto house roots of footwork and juke. Opener "Time Slip" is a fine case in point with its complex spread of jazz samples that take on a truly sci-fi level of exploration in the hyper tempos of their host track. The lineage of black music weighs in heavy on Da Mind Of Traxman 2 as every track lives and breathes its roots and influences, sometimes brazenly, but always imaginatively, as has always been the case with footwork. For a deeper exploration of where the Chicago-birthed sound can head in the future, look no further.

Review: The last 12 months have been a boon for fans of Luke Vibert, with the veteran Cornishman delivering a killer acid album for Hypercolour, and a slick, melodious set of disco-inspired jams under his Kerrier District alias. Here he returns to regular home Planet Mu with another typically entertaining set inspired by classic British electronic music. Utilising his battery of vintage music-making machines, Vibert giddily doffs a cap to early '90s intelligent techno, rave-era hardcore, bleep, Chicago acid and "braindance", occasionally veering off track via easy listening-inspired future jazz, Wagon Christ style hip-hop head-nodders (the title track, which doffs a cap to a forgotten, mid-90s remix he did for Ninja Tune) and squidgy, synth-propelled mutant electrofunk.

Review: Forever a label looking to explore the boundaries of forward thinking electronic music, Planet Mu's investigative streak falls upon the post-internet productions of Eastern European collective WWWINGS. A prime example of modern-day music production, WWWINGS is formed of three musicians - Lit Internet, Lit Eyne and Lit Daw - based in Kamchatka Peninsula, Siberia and Ukraine who met using the Russian networking site VK and began dabbling in production together. Through the power of music blogs and online communities the trio started making tracks and getting some recognition, which has ultimately led to the album PHONEIXXX, picked up by Planet Mu. Some twelve tracks deep, this is very much a product of contemporary music-making with razor sharp sound design crafting some brutal club structures which sound like the Night Slugs crew in a particularly rotten mood.

Review: Starting off on Kaleidoscope back in 2013, Yearning Kru has been a guilty pleasure of ours ever since. Guilty because it is largely music without any concrete shape, and also because it's exactly the sort of thing we're in our homes. Copper Vale is their new album and it marks their debut on the mighty Planet Mu, now home to an incredibly diverse spectrum of music by some of the very best in the game. Apart from all the glitchy, misshaped noise amalgamations on here - which we totally dig - we'd have to say that "Apple" is easily among our favourites thanks to its lo-fi beat sway, along with the subtly tropical bleeps and scratches of "Freckles On The Pain Amplifier". This really is one to get stuck into, so indulge all you like.
