Review: The reviews for Goldie's first album in nearly 20 years have largely been positive, with some critics calling it a triumphant return to form. The Journey Man naturally features sweeping, classical instrumentation, but there's nothing as self-indulgent as the fare featured on 1998's patchy Saturnz Returnz. What's perhaps most impressive about the album, though, is the ease in which Goldie flits between different styles of drum & bass - dancefloor darkness, jungle revivalism, liquid funk, and so on - while working with a wide range of collaborators (Ulterior Motive, Swindle, Jose James, Natalie Williams, Terri Walker). This "deluxe" edition expands the set even further, stretching it out from two discs to three, via the addition of a CD of superb instrumental interpretations.

Review: It would be fair to say that excitement has been building since Goldie announced the release of The Journey Man earlier this year. You see, the expansive, double-CD full-length is the Metalheadz man's first album since 1998's patchy Saturnz Return, and is being trumpeted by those who've heard it in full as a triumphant return to form. It naturally features some sweeping, classical instrumentation, but there's nothing as self indulgent as the hour-long "Mother". Furthermore, Goldie has wisely delivered a set of high quality drum and bass that ticks numerous boxes - dancefloor darkness, jungle revivalism, liquid funk warmth - with a string of suitably impressive collaborators (Ulterior Motive, Swindle, Jose James, Natalie Williams, Terri Walker) swinging by to ensure the set oozes soul.

  4. Beside Me (feat Ben Hadwen & Eleanor Higgins) (7:32)
Review: Not content with making it to the finals of Masterchef, Survival's also been cooking up Michelin star level jungle with Script too. Make that five Michelin stars. Maybe even six... "The Wrong Side" is simply incredible. Concreted abstract jungle theatre with belting vocals from Naomi Pryor, this has potential to be a tune of the year. Deeper on the menu we find "Make 'Em Know", a one way ticket on the bludclart bus to the Leisure Lounge circa 97 before signing out with cosmic sax blasts and velvet harmonies from Hadwen & Higgins on the sublime "Beside Me". And if that's not quite enough, there's even a 2 Bad Mice remix. For reals. This really is too good to be true...

  3. Chapters (feat Meyhem Lauren & Brotherman - Icicle remix) (4:34)
  4. Stay (feat James Sunderland - Lenzman remix) (5:42)
Review: Bournemouth's Ulterior Motive duo are just some of the leading faces of the contemporary Metalheadz sound. The duo are a perfect with Goldie's timeless label, and have precisely the right sort of formula to help the label undergo its constant evolution. The Fourth Wall is the album from 2014, remixed here a rather special selection of 'boneheads', as DJ Randall famously named d&b producers. The first is a version of "Keep It Moving" by the awesome Break, and it's a dive into the past, the remix instantly reminding us of the sorts of mutant sounds that Optical and Ed Rush used to conjure in their skunked-out Soho studio, while the VIP mix of "Inta National" is a more drum-heavy, jungle-leaning sort of roller. "Chapters" is touched up by Icicle, who takes Mayhem Lauren and Brotherman's vocals to a futuristic, break-heavy hip-hop territory, leaving Lenzman's remix of "Stay" to provide some much needed downtempo, recalling the sort of liquid d&b by the likes of Logistics and co.

  1. Step Change (4:35)
  2. Get Close (5:29)
Review: It's been a few years since Ulterior Motive last delivered original material on Headz but these two ageless designs more than make up for lost time. "Step Change" is the assassin of the two: one click head shot business, this is a run for cover brock out with all the grit and aggression we need in these dark, paranoid times. "Get Close", meanwhile, proceeds to soften our edges. An unnerving, droning stepper that's restrained, but gradually built with measured menace, it's quintessential Ulterior Motive.
