Review: Flipping the switch from their recent disco funk collaboration with Kathy Brown, AI delve deep into D&B's dark history books with this incredible tribute to the mighty Dillinja (the clue is in the title). "What You Had" plays the perfect foil, not only soothing your soul with Steo's honey-coated vocal but showing yet another side to AI's seemingly never-ending list of talents. Deliriously good.

Review: Commix returns: fresh from his Endian techno adventures, George Levings (now running solo ops) presents his first new D&B release in over four years. Has the wait been worth it? Immerse yourself into the deep rumbles, rolls and sound designs of "Generation" or the heavy meditative complexities of "Deepdubs" and the answer is clear... Yes, the wait has been worth it and it comes with the long awaited official release of Spectrasoul's remix of "Justified" to boot. Apparently there's a whole stack more in the Commix cannon too. Big yesses.

  1. DMT (feat Hive) (6:24)
  2. Inna Soul Jah (6:40)
Review: After a five year wait, a new Dom & Roland album is set to land this month. His seventh in total, and first on Metalheadz, Last Refuge Of A Scoundrel is one of his most remarkable bodies of work during his illustrious 22 year career and it features outstanding, boundary-pushing tracks like this. "DMT" is classic Bluenote badness - ruthlessly rule free and sprung in pent up energy and aggression. "Inna Soul Jah" continues the furious funk with a cymbal-heavy palette of drums that sounds like no other producer's on this planet. And this barely scratches the surface of the album's depth and weight.

Review: 22 years into his production career, Dominic Angas - armed, of course, with his trusty Roland S760 - continues to deliver high quality drum & bass. Last Refuge of a Scoundrel is his first album for Goldie's Metalheadz stable, and sees the D&B veteran deliver a literary-inspired set of epic proportions. So, while his famous growling basslines and punchy jungle rhythms remain - see the sub-low wobble of "Tone Poem", the hardcore era madness of "King of the Hustlers" and the ragga-goes-tech-step thrust of "Rockers" - these are often counter-balanced by more musically expansive offerings. Check, for example, the epic ambient builds of "DMT" and "Steam (The Final Chapter)", the spine-tingling intro to "Siren Song", and the symphonic feel of "A New Renegade".

  2. Rotate (5:04)
Review: Earlier in 2016, George 'Dub Phizix' Ovens returned to action after a two-year absence. That double-header was warmly received in drum & bass circles, and it's likely this relatively swift follow-up will be, too. "Spot Light" is an intriguing concoction, with lo-fi, post-rock style guitar refrains and sustained-note strings seemingly floating over a punchy, bass-heavy, retro-futurist jungle rhythm. The "back to '96" vibe is even stronger on flipside "Rotate", which makes great use of blistering early jungle breaks, mind-altering sub-bass, and the kind of blissful musical touches that were once the hallmark of early Good Lookin' Records releases. Like the A-side, it's a bit of a treat.

Review: It would be fair to say that excitement has been building since Goldie announced the release of The Journey Man earlier this year. You see, the expansive, triple-vinyl full-length is the Metalheadz man's first album since 1998's patchy Saturnz Return, and is being trumpeted by those who've heard it in full as a triumphant return to form. It naturally features some sweeping, classical instrumentation, but there's nothing as self indulgent as the hour-long "Mother". Furthermore, Goldie has wisely delivered a set of high quality drum and bass that ticks numerous boxes - dancefloor darkness, jungle revivalism, liquid funk warmth - with a string of suitably impressive collaborators (Ulterior Motive, Swindle, Jose James, Natalie Williams, Terri Walker) swinging by to ensure the set oozes soul.

Review: The reviews for Goldie's first album in nearly 20 years have largely been positive, with some critics calling it a triumphant return to form. The Journey Man naturally features sweeping, classical instrumentation, but there's nothing as self-indulgent as the fare featured on 1998's patchy Saturnz Returnz. What's perhaps most impressive about the album, though, is the ease in which Goldie flits between different styles of drum & bass - dancefloor darkness, jungle revivalism, liquid funk, and so on - while working with a wide range of collaborators (Ulterior Motive, Swindle, Jose James, Natalie Williams, Terri Walker). This "deluxe" edition expands the set even further, stretching it out from two discs to three, via the addition of a CD of superb instrumental interpretations.

Review: Not content with making it to the finals of Masterchef, Survival's also been cooking up Michelin star level jungle with Script too. Make that five Michelin stars. Maybe even six... "The Wrong Side" is simply incredible. Concreted abstract jungle theatre with belting vocals from Naomi Pryor, this has potential to be a tune of the year. Deeper on the menu we find "Make 'Em Know", a one way ticket on the bludclart bus to the Leisure Lounge circa 97 before signing out with cosmic sax blasts and velvet harmonies from Hadwen & Higgins on the sublime "Beside Me". And if that's not quite enough, there's even a 2 Bad Mice remix. For reals. This really is too good to be true...

  2. Phil Tangent & Pennygiles - "Crossing The Rubicon" (6:01)
Review: The latest plate on Metalheadz Platinum series comes from Phil Tangent, a fast-rising producer who has never previously appeared on Goldie, Kemistry and Storm's historic D&B imprint. A-side "Bardabunga" is a rolling D&B delight, with foreboding chords, mutilated horn stabs and wavy vocal samples riding punchy beats and booming sub-bass. On the flip, Tangent once again joins forces with regular collaborator Pennygiles. Between them, the two producers conjure up a cyber-sonic drum and bass assault that flips from trippy breakdowns to all-out dancefloor war in the blink of an eye.

  2. Get Close (5:29)
Review: It's been a few years since Ulterior Motive last delivered original material on Headz but these two ageless designs more than make up for lost time. "Step Change" is the assassin of the two: one click head shot business, this is a run for cover brock out with all the grit and aggression we need in these dark, paranoid times. "Get Close", meanwhile, proceeds to soften our edges. An unnerving, droning stepper that's restrained, but gradually built with measured menace, it's quintessential Ulterior Motive.
