Minimal/Tech House
  1. Colt (George FitzGerald remix) (5:56)
  2. Airless (Grain remix) (7:19)
Review: Dense & Pika aka Alex Jones and Chris Spero (aka Glimpse) have really hit their stride in the last few years with this project pushing a more gutsy techno sound than their previous tech house/minimal aliases. George Fitzgerald throws down a pretty uplifting and blissed out deep house remix of "Colt" from their 2013 EP of the same name. Meanwhile The UK's Arthur Smith is back under his seminal Grain alias for his remix of "Airless", also taken from the same EP. The man behind some of the most influential tribal techno records that shaped a whole generation of DJs and producers throws down one of his trademark workouts; funky, percussive and made to play!

Deep House
  1. Jels
  2. Wade In
Review: ** JOY O REPRESS ** Ray Keith's nephew tries out the latest variant on Joy Orbison with a return to Hotflush that demonstrates just how far he's progressed since the HYPH MNGO days. If "Ladywell/BB" signalled his intentions to take a house-centric turn, then "Jels" & "Wade In" is O/Orb/Orbison tackling Chicago and Detroit in his own inimitable style. "Jels" arrives with a synth wash swagger, dropping into crisp 808 rhythms and future Detroit synths that build towards an emotive drop into the throbbing main. Craftily switching between snarling acid leads and elegant piano flourishes, it's a bold dancefloor statement. "Wade In" looks to the emotive deepness of Chicago, adding some glorious tropical touches to the thudding rhythmic thrust with uplifting results. There's a point where the pads are stretched right out in unison with the subaqueous vocal harmony which is truly blissful. You don't really need us to point this out for you, but this is gonna be huge.

Bass
  1. Hyph Mngo
  2. Wet Look
Review: It's almost five years since the immense Hyph Mngo announced the talents of Joy Orbison to the world and a lot has changed in this time - not least the musical direction of Scuba's Hotflush label. One of several early Hotflush releases that have been granted a timely repress, the first thing that hits you listening back to "Hyph Mngo" is 'did it ever get revealed how to pronounce it?' We jest, actually it's amazing how powerful a production it still is, and arguably one of the tracks that helped bring about the shift from traditional dubstep to what many now refer to as UK BASS. B Side "Wet Look" can still cause a bit of dancefloor commotion too, you know! A must for those that never got this 12" first time round.

Review: And so the Phenix trilogy of 12" releases from Scuba ends here with a final four track release and looking back over the series as a whole you think perhaps the Hotflush boss was using it as a platform to explore his next comprehensive move. The four tracks here work in a subtle narrative arc, commencing with the restrained minimalist sound design of "Silence" before Scuba eases up the tempo across the tracks that close the A Side and open the B Side. "Nineteen Eighty" is dub techno at it's most weightless, whilst "Plateau" may prove to be the most melodically enriching Scuba production in some time. The appropriately titled "Fade" brings the curtain down on Phenix in somewhat contemplative mood, leaving the question of where Paul Rose goes next...

Review: In the three years since his last full-length outing, Personality, Scuba's stock has continued to rise, nudging him further towards to higher echelons of DJ culture. The fact that he now plays colossal rooms and festival headline slots can be heard in the more dancefloor-minded material on Claustrophobia. While some of the best material is more downtenpo and circumspect - see the heady ambience of "Transcience", the spinetingling wooziness of "All I Think About Is Death" and the immersive dubstep of "Needle Phobia" - it's the stripped-back techno throb of "PCP", hissing rhythms of "Television" and the progressive house inspired hedonism of "Why You Feel So Low" that will get most attention.

  10. Transience (Tuff City Kids remix)
Review: Given the clear tech-house, techno and - whisper it quietly - progressive house influences surging through Scuba's Claustrophobia album, it seems rather fitting that the Hotflush Recordings founder has decided to get it remixed by an impressive array of 4/4 talents. Clearly aimed at the big, dark rooms he now plays, the ten reworks that make up Claustrophobia Remixes are all tried-and-tested club workouts. Highlights are naturally plentiful, and include a terrifically tactile, '90s-influenced revision of "Transience" by Tough City Kids, a hypnotic, stripped-back take on All I Think About Is Death from veteran after-party specialist Radio Slave, and Atom TM's psychedelic, acid-tinged interpretation of "Television".

  3. All I Think About Is Death (Radio Slave Atmos) (4:23)
Review: Ah yes, we knew this was coming - off the back of his latest Claustrophobia LP, Hotflush bossman and general tech don, Scuba, has his "All I Think About Is Death" tune remixed and morphed by a bunch of serious heavy-hitters, potentially two of the biggest techno artists of the last ten years. First up, Rekids boss Radio Slave adds some of his signature stutter to the tune - the percussion work is simply perfect on the dancefloor - and then throws down another Atmos mix in a semi beatless stance...gorgeous. US techno emperor, Function, delivers his usual masterful craft on the remix of "Why You Feel So Low", a sublime and painfully FUNCTIONal techno bomb.
