Review: According to their Soundcloud page, the Balearic Gabba Sound System are "geezers with a common love for sonically weird, feel good, bona fide recordings with a twist..." and that's good enough for us! Marco Gallerani, Bjorn Torske and even Prins Thomas are rumoured to have been involved in the project. Following up some great releases and remixes on on Hell Yeah and Secret Life, they land on Phil South's stellar Golf Channel and get stuck in straight away on "Quando" a hazy, psychedelic and slow burning epic for the early evening punters or the early morning sunrise alike. "Adriatic Bolt" is a cute little pop-inflected 80's style number while "I Dont Care Who You Are" gets back to the chill-out room on this beatless cosmic affair, featuring some pretty impressive vocals. The bubblegum acid of "Quiet Force" closes out proceedings appropriately.

Review: It's been six years since the release of Portuguese combo Gala Drop's acclaimed, self-titled debut album. In that time, there have been line-up changes, subtle changes in style, and a surprise meeting with Detroit legend Jerry The Cat. The latter makes a big impression on II, their long-awaited sophomore set, contributing hazy vocals throughout. The real genius of II, though, lies in Gala Drop's new-found sound - a deliciously Balearic mix of heavy dub influences, loose Balearic rock, picturesque electronics, and a curious-but-brilliant fusion of cheap drum machines and dense live percussion. As a result, the album effortlessly swings between enveloping, sun-kissed wooziness (see "Slow House" and "All Things"), and psychedelic, Balearic dub-rock ("Let It Go"). Happily, the sun shines throughout.

Review: For a six-year period between 2006 and 2012, a tiny Italian restaurant in Lower East Side became one of New York's hippest weeknight hangouts. With the assistance of unofficial promoter/musical programmer Jason Kincade, Golf Channel has put together this celebratory collection, featuring tracks from regular visitors to the unlikely party space. There's much to admire, from the jazz-tinged deep dub disco goodness of Dedication's brilliant "Let Us Rock You", and the Loose Control Band's woozy deep disco treat "Doin' It", to the low-slung disco-acid atmospherics of Populette's "Another One", and the expansive synthesizer soundscapes of Thugfucker's "100". Best of all, though, is the cacophonous, acid-friend disco-punk madness of Totes Preesh's "The Spirit Is Alive".

Review: The Loose Control Band, a duo made up of Jason Drummond and Jonah Sharp, are an American outfit that deal in everything from deep house to thrash metal. Yes, we know, that is kind of mad. Their latest single sees them return to the equally versatile and multi-faceted Golf Channel label, this time with the 12" single "It's Hot", starting with the punky, nowave Columbus Hotel mix, followed by an injection of tribal 808 beats on the B-side's Bonus mix, and the totally punked-out original version, a stuttering garage tune for the heads. This is seriously sick, don't miss it.

  2. Police State (5:53)
  3. Surveillance (5:55)
Review: As the back cover makes clear, Negative Hallucination is a collaboration between Pittsburgh Track Authority member Thomas Cox, and Africans With Mainframes member Noleian Reusse. Given their respective recording histories, you'd perhaps expect this debut EP to be full of bumpin', acid-flecked house. In fact, it's an altogether looser and more melodious affair, with opener "Solitarity" [sic] expertly combining elements from krautrock, analogue house, and cheery Balearic disco. The freaky, alien attack that is off-kilter jacker "Police State" is perhaps more in-keeping with their analogue house histories, while "Surveillance" expertly joins the dots between dub techno, lo-fi house, and intergalactic electronica.

  2. We Are Chains (6:58)
Review: London duo Payfone return to Golf Channel with two more stately ageless gems. "Justified" takes a similar tone to their previous floor-burner "Quarantine", all star-lit and subtly cosmic, but with added soul snippets and textures wrapping around the groove like tailored faux fur. "We Are Chains" builds even more fervour with serious spiritual muscle as a Romanthony-level vocal preaches gutsily over another brilliantly slow, steady and broadsword dub disco groove. Definitely something to phone home about.

Review: Payfone are Balearic pushers Phil Passera & Chieka Ononye from London who return with a second release on Phil South's esteemed NYC imprint Golf Channel. On the A side we've got the low-slung nu disco of "Catholic Central" which is immersed in just the right amount of marijuana haze on this deep and sultry summertime groove for endless summer nights in NYC loft parties and London basement shindigs alike. On the flip is an absolutely epic remix by Ann Arbor hero of the underground D'Marc Cantu who gives the track a deep, dark and tunnelling makeover, clearing the smoke away and instead covering the track in a nice sheen of dust and rust, finding the soul in the machines like he always does!

  1. Quarantine (7:53)
  2. Padre Pray For Us (8:49)
Review: Since donning the Payfone guise, former Kitty Bronx and Leon Lace man Phil Passera has yet to put a foot wrong. Both 2013 debut "International Smark" and last year's "Paradise" - the latter for Phil South's Golf Channel imprint - were both superb exercises in re-imagining New York boogie for the house generation. He's at it again here, with "Quarantine" offering the perfect blend of jaunty electrofunk synths, early New York garage dubbiness, effortlessly soulful vocals, rubbery disco bass and a dash of Giorgio Moroder. Flipside "Padre Pray For Us" is an altogether deeper, woozier proposition, with blazed drums, hazy Rhodes keys and fluid synths being joined by a killer trumpet solo - the kind that makes you want to close your eyes and just drift away.

Review: If the success of any remix project rests on the ability of the chosen remixers, then Golf Channel Recordings boss Phil South couldn't have selected a better bunch to interpret Spike's material. All involved treat the mysterious Dutchman's lo-fi, blue-eyed soul originals with due reverence, while managing to stamp their mark on proceedings. Highlights come thick and fast, from the metallic dub stylings of Juju & Jordash's version of "Baby Love", and the gentle Balearic bliss of Mark E's interpretation of "Goodnight", to the rush-inducing stomp of Sexican's tops-off version of "Sometimes". Best of all, though, is Mind Fair's epic take on "Fooling Around", which gets re-imagined as a trumpet-laden, Latin dub disco epic.
