Review: This second album from the Mercury-nominated Glaswegian sound architect may be inspired by '60s sci-fi TV classic "The Twilight Zone", but the sleeve art depicts the stairway from the flat in which he both lives and records. These however both seem peculiarly apt, as 'The Midnight Sun' has an uncanny knack for summoning the otherworldly in the everyday. Whilst his choral vocal passages and electronic soundscapes may summon a pastoral kind of chill, his melodic nous and songwriting skill memorably anchor the moody atmospherics, offering an eerie and affecting work likely to offer succour to fans of James Blake and The Blue Nile both.

Review: This Glaswegian duo may hark back to the indie-rock of the '90s. with powerful frontwoman Stina Tweeddale's hollerin' tonsils - equal part country-style lilting and abrasive - bringing to mind Kristen Hersh and Kim Deal, Yet these are more than merely flattering comparisons, and their guitar-driven swagger on this second opus is possessed of enough youthful energy to render such concerns irrelevant. The indelible pop suss of these ditties is balanced out by a heavier and more full-on delivery than their debut, attacking both ampstacks and sensibilities with a grunge-transcending assault as sweet and primal as their moniker.

Review: A somewhat atypical indie outfit by any standard, The Rank Deluxe share as much of an affinity with old school UK punk or grime as they do with any of their more immediately apparent musical contemporaries. Often playing in or amongst the crowd, live shows are frenetic, full of youthful exuberance, occasionally divisive, but always fun. Informed by reggae, ska, punk, and rock and roll, The Rank Deluxe's sound is vibrant, pop savvy and uncompromising. Varying in style from cathartic pop to stabby, dub rhythms, lyrically the band align themselves with the social commentary of UK-based artists such as The Specials, Gang Of Four, or even Ian Dury. The band's name is taken from a glamour model's comment, overheard entering a strip club above the band's old rehearsal space. "This place is so rank deluxe" she said; apparently meaning the height of scum. Drawn to the multiple implications, they took the phrase as their own. Four 20-something's from South East London, Lew and Rich grew up on the same estate in Thamesmead, South East London, and the band's current line up formed early in 2005. The band refer to their music as "a sonic picture of council estate youth", but what so often can seem little more than empty posturing is backed up by a strong sense of identity, and an aptitude and commitment that is beyond their short lifespan.

Review: Purveyors of a uniquely Caledonian form of melodic melancholy, The Twilight Sad have delighted many with their last few albums, and none more so than the fearsome guitar-fuelled fury and emotional wallop of 2013's 'Nobody Wants To Be Here And Nobody Wants To Leave'. Moreover, this acoustic live recording, captured for posterity at a Glaswegian art space, captures the band stripped-down, vulnerable and at their best - the spare approach herein displays a band who've made tender vulnerability and heartfelt intensity their calling cards, not to mention the reasons why The Twilight Sad's fanbase are quite so obsessive.

Review: The Twilight Sad are unmistakeably their own band. "Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters" is a complete record, the nine tracks working together to create a strong narrative flow. Deceptively simple songs are rendered transcendent. Bleached, overdriven guitars consistently work in tandem with an articulate rhythm section, forever poised between tension and release. Augmented by piano and more frequently accordion, which provide the songs with a dramatic swoon, The Twilight Sad purvey an awestruck, ragged sentimentality. Lyrically suggestive and metaphorical, their songs give glimpses of bitter experience and romantic failure, their songs at times verging on the anthemic or celebrative, yet firmly rooted in the familiar, often unsaid hurt behind day to day events. Fat Cat have released a great record.
