Review: 45 years and 30-odd albums deep and still cooking up incredible, exciting fusions Brazilian jazz troupe Azymuth are set to update their near-unparalleled repertoire with a new album later this year. In the meantime they're keeping us warm with their sixth album, 1980's Outubro. In places you can really hear big synthetic influences instantly, like the heavy Yamaha riff on full-powered opener "Papasong". In others it's more subtle and aged (thanks to Daft Punk) with class, like the sexy robo-voxed sleazy funk strutter "Dear Limmertz". Elsewhere you can hear the band at their percussive prime ("Carta Pro Airto") and at their damn right sexiest ("Outubro")... And get all excited for their new material.

Review: Having impressed on its' CD release earlier in the year, Nicola Conte's collaboration with Italian singer Stefania Dipierro finally comes to vinyl. We're used to the veteran bossa-nova and jazz composer seemingly dropping albums at will, but Natural is undoubtedly a cut above some of his recent sets, thanks largely to the focus provided by Dipierro's breathy, sweet and atmospheric vocals. Delivered in a trio of languages (English, Italian and Portuguese), the singer's delivery sits somewhere between classic jazz and Astrud Gilberto, making it a perfect foil for Conte's jaunty, life-affirming instrumentation. As a result, Natural feels like a contemporary Brazilian classic - even if it was forged in Italy - and boasts all manner of bossa, samba and soul-jazz treats.

  1. Where Do We Go From Here? (Dego 2000 Black remix) (5:06)
  2. Where Do We Go From Here? (Ben Hauke remix) (4:35)
  3. Where Do We Go From Here? (Andres remix) (7:05)
Review: Daniel Maunick and David Brinkworth's Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra require absolutely no introduction, and the duo have been cornerstones of nu jazz for the last six years. In fact, they've been remixed by everyone from Mark E, to Kirk De Giorgio and even the great Theo Parrish, but these latest versions potentially the tastiest yet. First up, UK 4 Hero legend Dego gives "Where Do We Go From Here" his signature 2000 Black touch by stretching the groove out and twisting the drums up, only for Ben Hauke to slow things back down and twist the tune into a pseudo hip-hop lick. On the flip comes a special moment from Detroit house heavyweight Andres, where the veteran MPC head takes one small vocal cut and chops it up all over a simple yet unsurprisingly hummable groove. No surprises here - recommended!

  1. Where Do We Go From Here? (Andres alt remix) (7:02)
  2. Where Do We Go From Here? (LTJ Xperience remix) (8:40)
Review: The past six years have seen Far Out call on the great and the good to rework material by the Dave Brinkworth and Daniel Maunick-led ensemble, Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra with John Morales, Mark E, Theo Parrish, Marcellus Pittman, Dego and DJ Spinna among the contributors. La Vida man Andres is pulling ahead of the competition in terms of appearances on the series, having contributed two remixes in the space of a year. He's back for a third time with an alternate mix to "Where Do We Go From Here" alongside LTJ Experience man Luca Trevisi. Whilst the Andres mix of the track that featured on a 12" earlier this year was an exercise in chopped simplicity, there is a touch more complexity to this alternate take which shows off his ear for warming musicality. The LTJ take is super deep and super good!

Review: 20 years in any game is no mean feat. But in the music industry, it deserves a knighthood. Far Out knows this, and they are celebrating their double decade digits with this incredible project that taps into the very roots of the label's original inspiration. Armed with some of Brazil, the US and the UK's best performers and working closely with Brazilian arrangers Jose Roberto and Arthur Verocai, this is an immaculate document that explores every corner of Latin and western funk, soul and disco. Ranging from the incredible orchestration of "Keep Believing" (notably Theo Parrish's translation) to the contemporary house-tinged soul and funk bubbles of "Don't Cha Know He's Alright" and the delicate balance of squidgy synth boogie and Mancini strings on "A Disco Supreme", this is far more than a celebration of Far Out's 20th year, but a celebration of the very best music and musicians, too.

Review: An everlasting echo of Far Out's most formative roots, the Friends From Rio story began 20 years ago. Updated sporadically over the two decades, this opus is the series zenith as some of the most significant label friends collide for an set made almost exclusively of original recordings (bar an outstanding cover of Jorge Ben's universally renowned "Mas Que Nada"). Written and performed by the likes of Alex Malheiros, Hyldon, Carlos Dafe, Aleh Ferreira, Robertinho, Sabrina Malheiros and many more talented Brazilian musicians we shake, shuffle and slide across the Rio soundscape from the sharp horn punctuation and disco bubbles of "Fogo No Chao" to the slinky lounge jazz of "Veneno" via the vibrant Hammond sprinkles of "Lembrancas Do Lincoln". Whether you've been on Far Out's journey from the beginning or you've only invested in your first Latin one-way ticket, this is an exceptional adventure.

  2. Things To Say (Ben Hauke remix) (5:23)
Review: Ahead of the release of his second album, Far Out commission two remixers that complement Khan's Latin jazz sensibility and delivery and bring them deeper into the dance. 22a Records' Henry Wu gets busy on the rim shots and p-funk synths to create a sound that sits somewhere between Bugz and Liston Smith. Flip for a slower, smokier version from Ben Hauke who rekindles the ghosts of 4Hero at their jazziest or Theo Parrish with soft kicks and rich, unpredictable keys. Unique.

Review: Far Out Recordings have long been masters at unearthing and reissuing long-lost Brazilian masterpieces. Jose Mauro's 1970 debut album, Obnoxious, undoubtedly falls into that category. It's long been a favourite with committed diggers such as Gilles Peterson, Madlib and Floating Points, all of whom appreciate Mauro's distinctively melancholic take on the samba sound. Drenched in atmospheric strings and with the singer's bittersweet vocals to the fore, the album sounds like it was informed as much by the Walker Brothers ad Rotary Connection as the sun-kissed sounds Mauro would have grown up listening to. It's not exactly psychedelic per se, but it's certainly impressively atmospheric and occasionally refreshingly dark. File under: "essential listening".
