  2. Wave (9:49)
  3. Bonita (6:41)
  4. Dindi (5:04)
Review: While names like Azymuth or Marcos Valle have become synonymous with Brazil's infamous 'jazz-dance' scene, it's really thanks to artists like Victor Assis Brasil that the genre has become such a staple of the enlarged jazz and funk movement. Brasil was a saxophonist in primis, and the best out out there at the time; Toca Antonio Carlos Jobim was one of his earlier albums, and it's striking to hear just how fluid and at the cutting-edge of jazz this man was in 1970. The opener "So Tinha De Sir Com Voce" is a delightfully subtle number, backed by intricate guitars and gentle pianos, while "Wave" heads down a deeper, more pensive tone with the man's sax on the front lines. "Bonita" is sweet, seductive but still full of zest and Brasil's inimitable charm on his preferred instrument, and "Dindi" winds the momentum down to a peaceful tempo that bursts with the South American continent's unmistakable glow. Excellent.

Review: 45 years and 30-odd albums deep and still cooking up incredible, exciting fusions Brazilian jazz troupe Azymuth are set to update their near-unparalleled repertoire with a new album later this year. In the meantime they're keeping us warm with their sixth album, 1980's Outubro. In places you can really hear big synthetic influences instantly, like the heavy Yamaha riff on full-powered opener "Papasong". In others it's more subtle and aged (thanks to Daft Punk) with class, like the sexy robo-voxed sleazy funk strutter "Dear Limmertz". Elsewhere you can hear the band at their percussive prime ("Carta Pro Airto") and at their damn right sexiest ("Outubro")... And get all excited for their new material.

  1. Fenix (Ron Trent remix)
  2. Fenix
Review: Here's something to get the blood pumping: a fresh Ron Trent remix of the title track from legendary Brazilian jazz-funk outfit Azymuth's most recent album, 2016's "Fenix". The original version is, of course, rather tidy - think darting synths and vocoder lines, dexterous slap-bass and rich, life-affirming chords - but Trent still manages to serve up a seriously good alternative version. He appears to have utilized every bit of individual instrumentation found on the master tapes, offering a subtle deep house/jazz-funk fusion cut full of loose-limbed drumming, intertwined solos and chords that pulse with sun-kissed positivity. It's not a particularly revolutionary remix, but when the musicianship is this good, why change it?

Review: Joe Davis' Far Out Recordings has always been at the top of our list. Without this fundamental imprint, we wouldn't have discovered a lot of Brazilian funk, soul and disco material from the 70s, and the likes of Gilles Peterson have much to thank Davis for. This particular release is even more special because, unlike the plethora of reissues on Far Out, it's a brand new album from the legendary Azymuth group, leaders in jazz-fusion and disco since their first album back in '73! Sadly, the original keyboardist, Jose Roberto Bertrami, passed away in 2012 but the younger Kiko Continentino has done a fantastic job at accompanying Ivan Conti and Alex Malheiros on this new LP. Fenix is an album of energy and magnetism, leading with the jazzy, wonked-out disco of Batucada Em Marte", and continuing into the myriad of tropical flavours that span the entirety of this excellent LP. It's disco for those that don't like to dance, or jazz for those that do - warmly recommended, of course.

  4. Ah Que Legal (Jeen Bassa remix) (3:42)
Review: Joe Davis' Far Out Recordings is indeed an endless source of good music and outernational slickness. The British digging veteran has given us an insurmountable amount of pearls over the years but, specifically, he's opened a whole Pandora's Box of Brazilian music; word on the street is that he was the man who sold Gilles Peterson his first, now rare-as-hens-teeth, Brazilian 12s and LPs back in the 90s. His latest 12" features Azymuth drummer Ivan Conti, remixed and reinterpreted in the finest of UK flavours and, more specifically, form a selection of artists whom we rarely see these days. Broken beat pioneer IG Culture rewires "Mamao's Brake" in the most poignant of fashions, tearing up that percussion and letting it run wild amid scores of trippy synths, while 22a's Tenderlonious gives the tune a funky albeit minimalistic sort of flavor. "Ah Que Legal", on the flip, is first retouched by Reginald Omas Mamode IV, who turns in a beautifully stripped-back, lo-fi waver, and then by Jeen Bassa who goes for the hazy, boogie sort of flex. This is very warmly recommended. 5 stars.

Review: Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra are in safe hands right here as serial editor and connoisseur Al Kent takes the parts of one of their 2014 album highlights "Vendetta" and revisions them into a hypnotic dancefloor trip. Where the original is loose and prone to steamy Latin string histrionics, Al's edits restrain the emotion a little and let it leaks out much more gradually over an enticing weave of percussion. Whether it's the vocal or dub version, both are guaranteed to take your floor to new places.

  1. Where Do We Go From Here? (Andres alt remix) (7:02)
  2. Where Do We Go From Here? (LTJ Xperience remix) (8:40)
Review: The past six years have seen Far Out call on the great and the good to rework material by the Dave Brinkworth and Daniel Maunick-led ensemble, Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra with John Morales, Mark E, Theo Parrish, Marcellus Pittman, Dego and DJ Spinna among the contributors. La Vida man Andres is pulling ahead of the competition in terms of appearances on the series, having contributed two remixes in the space of a year. He's back for a third time with an alternate mix to "Where Do We Go From Here" alongside LTJ Experience man Luca Trevisi. Whilst the Andres mix of the track that featured on a 12" earlier this year was an exercise in chopped simplicity, there is a touch more complexity to this alternate take which shows off his ear for warming musicality. The LTJ take is super deep and super good!

  3. Where Do We Go From Here? (Andres remix) (7:05)
Review: Daniel Maunick and David Brinkworth's Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra require absolutely no introduction, and the duo have been cornerstones of nu jazz for the last six years. In fact, they've been remixed by everyone from Mark E, to Kirk De Giorgio and even the great Theo Parrish, but these latest versions potentially the tastiest yet. First up, UK 4 Hero legend Dego gives "Where Do We Go From Here" his signature 2000 Black touch by stretching the groove out and twisting the drums up, only for Ben Hauke to slow things back down and twist the tune into a pseudo hip-hop lick. On the flip comes a special moment from Detroit house heavyweight Andres, where the veteran MPC head takes one small vocal cut and chops it up all over a simple yet unsurprisingly hummable groove. No surprises here - recommended!

Review: An everlasting echo of Far Out's most formative roots, the Friends From Rio story began 20 years ago. Updated sporadically over the two decades, this opus is the series zenith as some of the most significant label friends collide for an set made almost exclusively of original recordings (bar an outstanding cover of Jorge Ben's universally renowned "Mas Que Nada"). Written and performed by the likes of Alex Malheiros, Hyldon, Carlos Dafe, Aleh Ferreira, Robertinho, Sabrina Malheiros and many more talented Brazilian musicians we shake, shuffle and slide across the Rio soundscape from the sharp horn punctuation and disco bubbles of "Fogo No Chao" to the slinky lounge jazz of "Veneno" via the vibrant Hammond sprinkles of "Lembrancas Do Lincoln". Whether you've been on Far Out's journey from the beginning or you've only invested in your first Latin one-way ticket, this is an exceptional adventure.

Review: Ahead of the release of his second album, Far Out commission two remixers that complement Khan's Latin jazz sensibility and delivery and bring them deeper into the dance. 22a Records' Henry Wu gets busy on the rim shots and p-funk synths to create a sound that sits somewhere between Bugz and Liston Smith. Flip for a slower, smokier version from Ben Hauke who rekindles the ghosts of 4Hero at their jazziest or Theo Parrish with soft kicks and rich, unpredictable keys. Unique.
