Review: Exit supergroup Binary Collective (comprising dBridge, Joe Seven, Kid Drama and Consequence) lay down their debut document... And it's every shade of retro-stated future you'd hoped it would be. Diving deep into the analogue abyss, each cut attempts to out-deep the next while remaining well weighted and groove-focused. "Binary Theme" is Moroder on Mogadon, "In Pursuit" is a car chase in toxic treacle, "Cloud Creeping" is what trip hop would sound like if it was invented 20 years later while "Sentries Watch Us" sounds like one of Parliament's more experimental jams but played and recorded under water. These daft comparisons are just the tip of the iceberg, though - it's hard to reference music as matchless as this... Listen and interpret it in your own universe.

Review: Damon Kirkham long proved his status as a man of many genre-blurring aliases and projects before he added the Kid Drama moniker to his discography. Three years on and it's proved a worthy creative outlet for the Convex Industries man, and the Covering Ground EP finds him back on Exit, the label that debuted the Kid Drama sound. Ranging from the deep dark pneumatic rolls of "Red Magic" to the somnambulant soft-focus steps and alluring chord chang of "Luv" by way of the autonomic skips of "Wasted Time" Kid wears his heart(drive) on his sleeve throughout. Genuinely sublime.

  3. Between The Lines (feat Collette Warren) (7:08)
  4. Just One Kiss (6:50)
Review: The Module Eight dust hasn't even begun to settle and Skeptical lets rip with a monolithic four-piece: "Loophole" is a lesson in minimalist momentum where funk can be found in the smallest glitches and elements, "Parallax" is a timeless rattle-and-shaker with a vocal loop peaks and troughs between the precision punctuated steppy beats and "Between The Lines" sees him recruiting one of drum & bass's most distinctive voices as Collette Warren does the jazz thing over a rifle like two-tone bassline. "Just One Kiss" closes the show on a toxic, stark halftime feel for good measure. Impressive from the outset.

Review: dBridge's forward-thinking approach to drum & bass is well known, but even ardent followers of his Exit label have been pleasantly surprised by some of his A&R choices of late. This debut album from They Live a collaboration between cinematic D&B type Consequence and hotly-tipped producer Joe Seven is a great example. Seemingly inspired by sci-fi concepts and sweeping film soundtracks, it unassumingly flutters between slo-mo 4/4 grooves ("Letters Down"), IDM creepiness ("Mr Spalding's Neighbourhood"), glitchy experimentation ("The Ridgeway"), soaring ambience ("Cavalier") and vast, atmospheric MDMA-scapes ("The Alive"). On first listen it appears lightweight, but a few sessions on the headphones soon dispels any lingering doubts; Cancel Standard is very special indeed

Driftin EP (clear vinyl 12")
Cat: EXIT 064. Rel: 14 Mar 16
  1. Driftin (feat Zoe Violet) (5:52)
  2. Fever (5:11)
  3. Hipbounce (5:42)
Review: Fresh from his "Hammerhead" escapades on Aquatic Lab, Dave Jones dons his Zed Bias guise for another slippery bass session on the good ship Exit. This time he takes the footwork formula and twists it inside out in a way only he knows how: "Driftin" soothes with jazzy chords and velvet vocals from Zoel Violet, "Fever" is all about the dense physical drum arrangements while "Hipbounce" is a sonic sandstorm of soca and occasional UKG bass belches. Unique as always.
