Review: Late last year, Felix "Da Housecat" Stallings donned his long-discarded Aphrohead alias for the first time in 12 years. That single, the Mr G style loopy techno stomp of "Grown Men Cry", forms the centrepiece of Resurrection, Stallings' first album under the Aphrohead guise since 2002. It's a surprisingly mixed bag stylistically, variously doffing a cap to vintage, Derrick Carter style boompty ("Let's Prance"), locked-in tech-house ("Elevator (I'll Take The Stairs)", dense tribal grooves ("1King, 1Queen"), acid ("Medusa") and fluid, melodious deep house ("Come To Me"). It's a pretty stripped-back and no-nonsense affair throughout, with the emphasis firmly on robust dancefloor workouts.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Vampire Nightclub (feat Seth Troxler) (8:20)
  2. Without You (extended 12" mix) (8:37)
Review: It's been pretty hard to escape the hoo-hah surrounding Art Department ever since YouTube footage surfaced of the dropping "Without You" at the Hot Natured DEMF party back in June. The Juno editorial branch is in complete agreement that such hype is totally justified on this debut release for Crosstown Rebels. "Vampire Night Club" sits across the A Side with a guest spot from Seth Troxler, er, vamping it up on vocals backed by some haunting harmonies from Art Department's Kenny Glasgow. It's the dynamic usage of infectiously dark bass patterns and intermittent synth stabs that help cement the eerie atmosphere that pervades the track. This sense of pulsing menace is transferred to the B Side brilliance of "Without You". Made for play in dark venues where the crunching beat, throbbing bassline and creeped out vocal refrain from Glasgow can reverberate around the walls and your cerebral cortex, "Without You" is destined to become a mainstay in record boxes for many months to come.

  1. In The (Last) Moment (11:25)
  2. In The (Last) Moment (Robag Ponk Pramen NB remix) (8:02)
Review: Barcelona-based tech house heroes Anthony Middleton and Luca Saporito are back. This time for Damian Lazarus' esteemed Crosstown Rebels imprint with "In The (Last) Moment". The track is equally esoteric as it is atmospheric in the tradition of the label's new sound and perfect for drifting. The woozy, journey like aesthetic is only intensified by Georgia Lewis' hypnotising vocal efforts. On the lip we've got added dance floor drama and cerebral stimulus courtesy of the master himself Robag Wruhme; who as always turns in an emotive and bittersweet epic on "In The (Last) Moment (Robag Ponk Pramen NB remix)" complete with his trademarks: glitchy sound design, beautiful string arrangements and the usual Midas touch for pure deepness.

  4. Always On My Mind (Kornel Kovacs remix dub) (6:07)
Review: Brooklyn based producer Serge Devant aligns with Crosstown Rebels and gives us some seriously slinky tech house on the dark side with "Always On My Mind" featuring one seriously humming bassline, emotive strings and big vocals. Italy's Pirupa (who's done stuff previously on Drumcode and Rebellion) gives the track a progressive house style makeover reminiscent of Guy J or Guy Mantzur; don't worry, it's still dark! Stockholm based Studio Barnhus alumni Kornel Kovacs gives the track his rendition, which is a dusty and dreamy deep house jam that's just lovely and possibly our favourite on here. There's a dub version too for those of you less keen on the (in this case) pitch shifted and androgynous vocals.

Review: Fellow Danes Djuma Soundsystem and Yann Coppier team up with King Ayisoba on vocals for "Anyimu". King Ayisoba sings in Frafra, Twi and in English and is a big star in Ghana. This track is the kind of trippy and atmospheric slow burner that you could imagine label boss Damien Lazarus playing during the final hours of one of his legendary Burning Man sets. Who better to get in for a remix than Ibadan main man Jerome Sydenham for the high octane "Ibadan vocal dub" or the slightly more restrained "Ibadan Deepstrumental". The mysterious Johnny Aux lends a hand on the remix too giving the track a dusty and tunnelling deep techno remix, sounding like early Fred P, not bad!

Review: Crosstown Rebels assemble an A-star team of pioneers and legends for the next mammoth release on the label. 'Touch Your Body' comes courtesy of Felix Da Housecat, Jamie Principle and Vince Lawrence aka The 312 with sublime remixes from Moodymann. Felix Da Housecat is said to have wanted to go back to his Chicago roots and rounded up the other two legends of the Windy City; Lawrence for his spiritual and stylistic guidance and Priniciple for his unmistakable voice which has graced many a house anthem in the last 30 years. "Touch Your Body" conjures the spirit of Classic Chicago on this darkly emotive and bittersweet anthem that's just bound to be a future classic with a sincere nod to the past. Moondymann's stellar remixes on offer take the track down deeper territory.

  2. Kissing Your Eyes (Tale Of Us remix) (7:22)
  3. Body In Motion (Akufen remix) (7:51)
Review: * REPRESS * After his welcome return to the long-player format for Crosstown Rebels in the shape of Her Blurry Pictures, three of Mathew Jonson's creations from the record have been given over to a fine selection of remixers to bring their own interpretations to bear on the plush electronic soul the Canadian champ peddles. Dixon makes for a snug fit on "Level 7", simmering the original down without losing any of the celestial magic of those trademark Jonson synths. Tale Of Us bring a live, skippy feel to "Kissing Your Eyes" with some hands-on drums and warbling keys a plenty. Akufen meanwhile seems to be reaching more towards his Horror Inc project as he muses on "Body In Motion" in a low-slung, jazz-inflected style with a healthy dose of micro shuffle thrown in for good measure

Review: Crosstown Rebels boss Damian Lazarus seems to be mellowing with age - or at least getting more artistically adventurous. This follow-up to his 2009 debut, Smoke The Monster Out, was co-produced by Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford in LA. London and Mexico, with the assistance of an impressive cast of musicians from around the world. While rooted in the kind of tactile house and techno most associated with the evergreen hipster, Message From The Other Side is impressively psychedelic, otherworldly and stargazing in outlook. The album's woozy, horizontal appeal is therefore enhanced by Lazarus and Ford's use of Indian instrumentation, African percussion and impeccable keys-work from American jazz pianist Eric Lewis.

  3. Man O To (Pepe Bradock dub) (5:44)
Review: On his recent releases under the Nu alias, Rolf Fabian Laumer has giddily fused the smooth, clicking rhythms of minimalist tech-house with a range of global influences. The results have, by and large, been superb, sitting somewhere between sun-kissed warmth and haunting iciness. He's at it again on "Man O To", layering a drifting, chant-like vocal over a backing track that somehow joins the dots between cumbia, dub and tech-house. French maestro Pepe Bradock handles remix duties, first wrapping the vocal around a typically dusty, off-kilter house rhythm, before laying down a slightly tougher, stripped back Dub that's the EP's standout moment.

Review: Dutch hippie sort Satori is a regular on the international festival circuit, having taken his impressive live show everywhere from Germany's Fusion to Day Zero in Tulum. He's up next for Damian Lazarus' esteemed Crosstown Rebels imprint with "Imani's Dress" a moody and esoteric slow burner featuring hypnotic acoustic guitar notes soaring above woozy vocals, wonky synth leads and a tight groove. There's a couple of great remixes by two scene heroes: the first by the inimitable Matthew Dear who delivers an driving and adrenalised rendition, but our pick has definitely got to be Ewan Jansen's sharp and sexy groove therapy that's delivered on his remix, which also comes as a handy instrumental too.
