Review: Bringing one of those vocals that will be nagging in the noggin long after the lights have come up; Ali Love and Kali are in prime pop-picking mode with this new single on Crosstown Rebels. The structure of the track is still in keeping with the label's slick take on house music; while the vocals intone a message of massaged ego that translates smoothly to Waze & Odyssey's more brooding remix. Maceo Plex comes in with a more romantic vision for the track, laying out thick reams of synth in a seductive late night style that can bleed outwards to fill a space large or small.

Review: Late last year, Felix "Da Housecat" Stallings donned his long-discarded Aphrohead alias for the first time in 12 years. That single, the Mr G style loopy techno stomp of "Grown Men Cry", forms the centrepiece of Resurrection, Stallings' first album under the Aphrohead guise since 2002. It's a surprisingly mixed bag stylistically, variously doffing a cap to vintage, Derrick Carter style boompty ("Let's Prance"), locked-in tech-house ("Elevator (I'll Take The Stairs)", dense tribal grooves ("1King, 1Queen"), acid ("Medusa") and fluid, melodious deep house ("Come To Me"). It's a pretty stripped-back and no-nonsense affair throughout, with the emphasis firmly on robust dancefloor workouts.

Review: We can thank Damien Lazarus and his Crosstown Rebels label for coaxing Felix 'Da Housecat' Stallings into returning to his Aphrohead project, with last year's white label release of "Grown Man Cry" heralding proceedings. Back in September, a full album called Resurrection followed and suggest Stallings remains on fine form despite his vintage as a producer. A full 12" release for the loopy techno madness of album centrepiece "Grown Man Cry" now arrives and it's backed with a trademark remix from Planet E boss Carl Craig. The self-styled Brainy Grimlin remix finds Craig extending the track to almost ten minutes, expertly teasing the original track before dropping into his own throbbing arrangement with that sampled vocal appearing very late in the game.

Review: London-based producer Laurence Matthew Blake has been causing a stir under his Citizenn alias for some time, delivering intoxicating, tactile, otherwordly blends of tech-house, powder-house, garage and electronica for the likes of MadTech, Love Fever, 20:20 Vision and, most recently, Crosstown Rebels. Here, he returns to the latter with Human Interface, his debut album. It's a typically fluid and quietly soulful affair, with dreamy pads, touchy-feely electronics and shuffling dancefloor rhythms the order of the day. While there are a few powder house dancefloor moments - as you'd expect - Blake also doffs a cap to 2-step garage, booming bass-house, skewed synth-pop and, on the wonderful "You Are", string-drenched deep house loveliness

Electro House
  1. Ace Of Spades (feat Kiki)
  2. Dirty Dishes
Review: DJ Silversurfer first came to the world's attention with "Welcome to Berlin" (Lasergun) in 2003 - a classic release which was in the Top 3 of every DJ in the know. Expertly run by Damian Lazarus & Matthew Styles, Crosstown Rebels has become the home for the best techno, electro and house releases in the last three years. With artists and releases from Pier Bucci, Kiki & Silversurfer, Jennifer Cardini, Blackstrobe, Ost & Kjex, DJ Koze, Hiem, Rob Mello, Luke Solomon - Crosstown Rebels is at the forefront of the new energy in international club culture. "Ace Of Spades", which features co-production from Kiki, starts off with a distinctive growling bass line and a sharp kick that soon begins to lift you up, higher and higher. Suddenly out comes one of the most distinctive grooves you'll hear all summer. "Dirty Dishes" is a real melon-twister and if used correctly can cause serious damage to the dance floor. Almost a frequency test for your ears, sharp and dragged out bleeps and squeaks provide the melody for a very understated but heavy beat. Warped minimal madness. "Dirty Dishes is right up my tin pan alley. Proper wobbly funk!" - Paul Woodford, "Dirty Dishes is cool. I like it a lot!" - Luke Solomon, "Love both sides!!! Charting it - think it's brilliant. Prefer the slightly darker one that kind of builds more - the other side's good with electro records though cause it's more sparse with weird cut up bits. But they are both fantastic." - Shelley Parker (Haywire).

Review: London's Drumtalk is back on the ball after a couple of great twelves on Auntie Flo's Huntleys + Palmers imprint but this time stepping out on Damian Lazarus' well curated pop house institution. "Lose Again" features the gorgeous vocals of Berlin's Josa Peit over a lush and dreamy track complete with a lovely xylophone melody, a groove that'd no doubt catch Lee Burridge's ear. "Wildcard" is more straight ahead; a thumping techno groove with hypnotic synth stabs and a mesmerising melody. Finally "Gamma" is a slow burning epic on the proggy tip that will appeal to fans of Mind Against or Recondite.

Review: If you're reading this, you're probably aware of the hype surrounding Crosstown Rebels' latest stars-in-the making, Venezuelan production partnership Fur Coat. With a sound that ticks all the right Crosstown Rebels/Visionquest boxes - shuffling, vaguely atmospheric grooves, fluid basslines and moody, occasionally quietly soulful vocals - there's little doubt that they're destined for the top. Their position as stars is secured by the presence of previous single "You & I", a celebration of party powders that has become something of an anthem.

Review: Those with a cursory grasp of recent shifts in niche dance music will be fully aware of Luca C and Ali Love, the duo behind Infinity Ink. The former was once an integral part of Cazals whilst the latter has dabbled in all manner of East London scenes over the years. Arising on Crosstown Rebels as Infinity Ink is undoubtedly their most high profile release and they come sporting a new genre in cosmic garage, which sort of sounds like Art Department doing hip house on the basis of "Infinity". Label head Lazarus pulls out a top drawer (and quite appropriate) remixer in the shape of Todd The God Edwards, who drops a signature revision filled with stacatto swinging rhythms and vocal tweaks.

  3. Body In Motion (Akufen remix) (7:51)
Review: * REPRESS * After his welcome return to the long-player format for Crosstown Rebels in the shape of Her Blurry Pictures, three of Mathew Jonson's creations from the record have been given over to a fine selection of remixers to bring their own interpretations to bear on the plush electronic soul the Canadian champ peddles. Dixon makes for a snug fit on "Level 7", simmering the original down without losing any of the celestial magic of those trademark Jonson synths. Tale Of Us bring a live, skippy feel to "Kissing Your Eyes" with some hands-on drums and warbling keys a plenty. Akufen meanwhile seems to be reaching more towards his Horror Inc project as he muses on "Body In Motion" in a low-slung, jazz-inflected style with a healthy dose of micro shuffle thrown in for good measure

Review: Crosstown Rebels boss Damian Lazarus seems to be mellowing with age - or at least getting more artistically adventurous. This follow-up to his 2009 debut, Smoke The Monster Out, was co-produced by Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford in LA. London and Mexico, with the assistance of an impressive cast of musicians from around the world. While rooted in the kind of tactile house and techno most associated with the evergreen hipster, Message From The Other Side is impressively psychedelic, otherworldly and stargazing in outlook. The album's woozy, horizontal appeal is therefore enhanced by Lazarus and Ford's use of Indian instrumentation, African percussion and impeccable keys-work from American jazz pianist Eric Lewis.

Review: The legendary Crosstown Rebels - a label that's undergone so many changes and mutations over the years - drops a rather tasty 12" by the one and only Damian Lazarus & The Ancient Moons. "Vermillion" is a wonky and distinctly tribal 4/4 number with seductive pop vocals and a prominent indie feel to its groove. If you were already panicking about a lack of dancefloor debauchery then you needn't worry because there's a tight remix package: Agoria, Jamie Jones and Deniz Kurtel come through to save your dancing feet. Big EP!

Review: Roisin Murphy has a good track record when it comes to making slightly sleazy dance music, as her "Simulation" single on Permanent Vacation a few years back proved. Even so, it's still a surprise to see her popping up on Crosstown Rebels with "Jealousy", a track produced by regular sparring partner DJ Parrot (better known these days for his Crooked Man material). While most will naturally focus on the A-side House Mix - think fuzzy organs, sleazy, low-slung acid bass and a typically big vocal from the talented Murphy - it's the grandiose, 132 BPM Disco Mix on the flip that's the real deal. 12 minutes of rubbery bass, clipped, Nile Rodgers style guitars, loose drums and Murphy's brilliant vocal, it sounds like a disco classic in the making.

Review: Irish vocalist Roisin Murphy has seen and done it all over the last fifteen or so years. She's both released plenty of her own music via labels such as EMI and Echo, but also been remixed by everyone from bass-boy Toddla T to JD Twitch and Daniele Baldelli. Crosstown Rebels are the ones to deliver her next batch of remixes - the tune in question is "Jealousy" - this time by a bunch of house legends who all know a thing or two about remixing. First up are Greg Wilson and Derek Kaye who deliver a gorgeous string-heavy disco reinterpretation of the original, followed by tech-house kingpin Timo Mass and his wobbly, freaked-out version. Last up, Citizenn delivers an utter beauty with his heady dub remix, a certified winner in the dance. Hot.

Review: Tel Aviv's Red Axes certainly are the ones to watch at the moment. After great releases previously on I'm A Cliche and Hivern Discs, they now step up on Damian Lazarus' Crosstown Rebels. The dreamy exoticism of "Sabor" features Abrao's romantic vocal crooning beneath an infectious and chugging groove. There's a convenient instrumental version of the track included too. On the flip we have a remix by minimal house genius Isolee too, what a curveball this is! His brooding and booming rendition retains some of the metal drums of the original with a haunting melody, on this oddball house experiment that spans nearly nine minutes.. and its brilliant!

Review: Given his long-admired skills as a selector and DJ, any new mix CD from Craig Richards is a cause for celebration. This contribution to Crosstown Rebels' Get Lost series - his first commercially available mix since 2011 - is no different. Typically, it sees him explore a range of moods and styles across the two discs. Beginning with JTC's "Through The Looking Glass" (a kind of wonky tech-house cover of MFSB's disco classic "Love is the Message"), the first disc is warm, loose and atmospheric, with Richards darting between deep, acid and tech-house cuts old and new. The second disc is noticeably more robust, with a greater emphasis on ragged electro and surging techno. It is, as you'd expect, a masterful and entertaining mix.

Review: Given his long-admired skills as a selector and DJ, any new mix CD from Craig Richards is a cause for celebration. His contribution to the Get Lost series from Crosstown Rebels is no different with the CD edition containing a mammoth 37 tracks across the two discs. Whilst it was near impossible for the label to include all these tracks on this accompanying triple LP edition, Crosstown Rebels should be commended for including some of the highlights of Richards two diverse mixes. As such you get some classic early '90s NJ Garage from Black Rascals sharing space with the Mancunian tropics of Ruf Dug, vintage STL, Lowlands electro from Parallax Corporation, classic Kenny Larkin and more.
