Review: It's been a long time between drinks for German combo Bambi Davidson, whose last full-length - the lo-fi rock oddity El Faco - dropped some 15 years ago. After a decade and a half of improvisational live performances, they return with an expanded line-up and a really rather good sophomore set for Mudd's Claremont 56 imprint. Whereas their early work was stripped-back and to the point, Brunswick is packed with undulating, expansive grooves, gentle, sun-kissed melodies, lilting pedal steel and woozy, dub-influenced production. Tracks don't so much come and go, but meander attractively, offering Balearic mood pieces that doff a cap to krautrock and dub disco. It's an impressive set, all told, and one that will appeal to Claremont 56's growing fan base.

Cat: C56 053. Rel: 14 Mar 16
  1. Better Man (Craig Bratley remix) (4:47)
  2. Better Man (Craig Bratley instrumental remix) (4:44)
Review: Here's a question for you: What happens when you take a track by a British power trio heavily influenced by blues and psychedelia, and get a master of wayward, left-of-centre Balearica to remix it? You get the latest 12" missive from Claremont 56, which sees Bella Figura's "Better Man" reworked twice in impressive fashion by Magic Feet boss Craig Bratley. If you are familiar with Bratley's output for s It Balearic, Bird Scarer and Tsuba, you know the man breathes cosmic goodness and his work on Bella Figura's track offers a subtle new version that loses none of Justin Gartry's bluesy poignancy whilst adding a sparsely treated beat and plenty of low lying studio trickery.

Cat: C 56056. Rel: 07 Nov 16
  1. Let Me Rock You (7:24)
  2. Pito Deep (7:50)
Review: It's been a while since Dedication's last 12" release, the celebratory, DFA-released "I Ain't Gonna Tell You". Here, the British-Japanese collaborative combo returns to action, pitching up on Paul 'Mudd' Murphy's admirable Claremont 56 imprint. While both of the tracks here have previously been released on obscure compilations, this is the first time they've made it to wax. Choose between the deep, bumping and evocative "Let Me Rock You" - seemingly a tribute to Frankie Knuckles' loved-up, piano heavy remixes of the mid-to-late '80s with a little Loose Ends mixed in for good measure - and the more funk-fuelled "Pito Deep". This hip-wiggler sits somewhere between Herbie Hancock style jazz-funk, Nu-Balearic explorations, and the revivalist analogue boogie of Moon B.

Mawson's Walk (1-sided 12")
Cat: C56 044. Rel: 07 Oct 13
  1. Mawson's Walk
Review: Given his duties as head of Claremont 56 as well as active in various other projects such as Bison and Paqua, it's no surprise that Paul Mudd Murphy's collaborations with Kevin Pollard are infrequent at best, with four previous Mudd & Pollard twelve inches spanning some three years distance. However they're always worthy of your attention, as this one sided 12" attests. "Mawsons Walk" brims with all the disco trimmings you could want from a Claremont 56 release: loose Rhodes, some brass, low slung beats and infectious melody. A satisfying and bighearted 12".

Nariyama Ayagu (10" limited to 324 copies plus obi strip) (1 per customer)
Cat: C56 059. Rel: 03 Apr 17
  1. Nariyama Ayagu (Phil Mison remix)
  2. Nariyama Ayagu (Phil Mison dub)
  3. Vibration
Review: Thanks to his contacts in Japan, Claremont 56 boss Mudd has managed to snap up this magical single from friend Takeo's Okinawa Delays project. With remixer Phil Mison in full-on Balearic mode, "Nariyama Ayagu" is a wonderfully spacey, sunrise-friendly combination of tumbling piano lines, reverb-heavy Febnder Rhodes chords, plucked acoustic guitar lines and starry electronics. While the instrumental Dub is impressive, it naturally lacks the remix's star attraction - a sublime, head-in-the-clouds vocal from veteran Japanese pop singer Satoko Ishimine. Over on the flip, you'll find a brilliant, jazz-funk influenced cover of Kamiko Kasai's popular 1977 Japanese disco cut "Vibration". It, too, is rather special.

  4. Late Train (Emperor Machine special extended version - instrumental)
Review: Nurtured by Mudd and owners of their own stunning live band, Paqua should really deliver more Balearic bliss than they have. As we wait tentatively for more heartfelt, organic sun-kissed soul, Claremont 56 have commissioned some incredible remixes... "Late Train" gets a full cosmic treatment from the Idjut Boys while Emperor Machine takes it down a dark alley and roughs it up with a series of analogue synth slaps. Ray Mang, meanwhile, focuses on the dreamiest aspects of "The Visitor" and rearranges and polishes them in a way that's reminiscent of a certain Andrew Ashong. Stunning.

  12. Electro-Harmonix Work Band - "I’m Not A Synthesizer"
Review: As Claremont 56's superb Originals series of crate-digging compilations tiptoes towards the final curtain (a celebratory vinyl box-set is due later in the year), label boss Paul Murphy hands the reigns over towards longtime pals DJ Spun and Ben Cook, the men behind San Fran/New York imprint Rong Music. If you've heard either DJ, you'd expect their selection to jump between a myriad of dubby, stargazing styles, and that's exactly what they deliver. From the intergalactic ambience of Space Time Continuum's "Transmitter", to the low-slung dub disco of Futura 2000, via the Balearic house shuffle of FM Inc and spaced-out punk-funk of Big Boys, it's a treasure trove of thrillingly atmospheric obscurities. Recommended... as usual.

  9. Gorthleck (part 2) (2:12)
Review: For the recording sessions for Gorthleck, long-running collaborators Paul 'Mudd' Murphy and Ben Smith set up a small studio in a loch-side house in the Scottish highlands. The dramatic scenery and ever-changing weather patterns seem to have proved inspirational, because the album is arguably the downtempo duo's strongest to date. Variously influenced by kosmiche, Balearica, neo-folk, ambient, Tangerine Dream and movie soundtracks, the album's nine tracks meander along impressively, subtly shifting shape whilst winding their way into your subconscious. It's a beautiful set from start to finish, rich with hazy musicality and mood-enhancing moments, and comes highly recommended.

Alaula (12")
Cat: C 56055. Rel: 17 Oct 16
  1. Alaula (6:04)
  2. Alaula (Mudd Piano dub) (5:50)
Review: As it approaches the end of its' first decade, Claremont 56 continues to lead the way when it comes to atmospheric, sun-kissed Balearica. This latest chunk of horizontal goodness comes courtesy of Essex-based Statues, a trio who caught label boss Paul 'Mudd' Murphy's attention after submitting a string of impressive demos. "Alaula" is a softly spun delight, with Grant Carruthers' impassioned vocals weaving themselves around alluring acoustic guitars, rich bass, twinkling Rhodes lines, and Robin Lee's immaculate cello parts. Murphy delivers the obligatory flipside remix, serving up a delay-laden dub built around intricate percussion, life-affirming pianos, and Lee's wonderful strings.
