Review: Featuring the collective talents of Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Sondorom and Shonky, it's little surprise the Apollonia project has swiftly become a force to be reckoned with in house music over the past two years. Less a production unit, more an excellent DJ tag team and label collective, Apollonia output to date has been the sole Trinidad 12" issued through their eponymous label back in 2013. A debut album then is something of an ambitious move, yet Tour a Tour demonstrates the Parisian trio are more than up to the task. Said to be inspired by their unified approach to Djing, the album consists of 13 tracks that ramp up the intensity deftly in a manner to reflect a DJ mix. French legends Phillip Zdar and Alexkid lend their considered touch to proceedings throughout.

Tour A Tour: Remixes EP 1

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Mouche Tse Tse (Melchior Productions dub) (7:05)
  2. June (Charles Webster November mix) (8:16)
Review: We've said it once and we'll say it again; Apollonia: what a powerhouse! Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom and Shonky have taken house music by storm since collaborating as a DJ collective, production team and label. Their 2014 full length (and Phillipe Zdar/Alexkid co-produced) effort Tour A Tour is still getting some mileage, this time via some remixes. The first, "Mouche Tse Tse" is re-rubbed by minimal techno legend Thomas Melchior and is the kind of stripped and hypnotic afterhours business you'd expect from him and still retains the funk and groove from the original. On the flip is "June" remixed by Nottingham deep house maestro Charles Webster and it's as gorgeous as always. With the term deep house used so flippantly these days, Webster reminds us all how it's done on this fine track.

The Blue EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: APO 027. Rel: 27 Mar 17
Minimal/Tech House
  1. The Blue Grass (6:42)
  2. Kind Of Blues (6:26)
  3. Blue Stick (6:48)
Review: This collaborative 12" single brings together two veterans of the French tech-house scene, monsieurs Dan Gheancia and Chris Carrier. As a result, the quality threshold is naturally rather high. A-side "The Blue Grass" sets the tone, with Ghenacia and Carrier wrapping minor key chords and jammed-out motifs around a jazzy, brilliantly programmed tech-house rhythm. On the flip, you'll find the restless hustle of "Kind of Blues" - where looped, cyclical riffs and trippy spoken word chatter catch the ear - and the bass-heavy, driving tech-house funk of the slightly jazzy "Blue Stick". In other words, it's a rock solid collection of club-ready cuts.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Old In On (8:46)
  2. Mini Ass (7:26)
  3. Scris Frumos (7:26)
Review: Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom and Shonky's revered imprint is testament to their plight for world clubland domination. After a great last one by Ukranian minimal house hero iO (Mulen), the trio serves us with Italian producer based in Berlin Ivan Iacobucci, who's had releases previously on Holic Trax and King Street in a career that has spanned 26 years. "Old In On" is a loopy and reduced, bass driven deep house jam that will appeal to minimal heads as much as it would to deep house DJs. On the flip "Mini Ass" is an oddball and trippy minimal house odyssey with bumpy bass, tightly programmed rhythm and some wacky sound design. Finally "Scris Frumos" is the kind of stripped back house that'd work perfectly for the sunrise set at Concrete or Get Perlonised respectively.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Congo Toys (8:23)
  2. Tres Cuartos (7:05)
  3. Joyfex (7:20)
Review: Oslo Records main man and key proponent of the Mannheim Sound: Federico Molinari is back, this time for the mighty Apollonia imprint. The Congo Toys EP features three choice cuts of minimal house; the sound that the label is successfully championing the comeback of. The title track is the kind of bleepy and stripped back house that is reminiscent of classic DBX or Marc Houle. "Tres Cuartos" is more energetic with a tight and rolling groove that is more reminiscent of stuff on label boss Dan Ghenacia's old Freak 'N Chic imprint. Finally on the flip we've got "Joyfex" a deep tribal house journey that is long and hypnotic and perfect for use an effective DJ tool.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Tyrolien
  2. Beat Street
  3. Torro Rosso
  4. Serpent A Sonnette
Review: Ten months on from his last EP (which, amazingly, was his first in four years), Shonky returns with a four-track trip into off-kilter tech-house territory. The experienced producer begins with the layered helium voices, bustling electronic melodies, alien noises and bouncy groove of "Tyrolien", before opting for a more bustling, bumping feel on the low-slung thrills of "Beat Street". The razor-sharp alien funk of "Torro Rosso", where mutant rave stabs and fizzing electronic motifs cluster around a rolling rhythm track, sees him begin side B in confident fashion, before rounding things off via the heavyweight late night wonkiness of "Serpent A Sonnette".
