  1. Deixa O Morro Cantar (2:33)
  2. Mas Que Nada (2:33)
Review: Supreme musica popular Brasileira and bossa-nova vibes here on two tracks from Mr Bongo's leading Brazilian 45's lady, Claudia. "Deixa o Morro Cantar" features on Claudia's very first 7", released in 1965 by RGE Brazil. Her version of "Mas Que Nada" is said to be more of a jazzy/folk-funk take on the Ben classic. A relatively recent discovery made during the label's last trip to Brazil, Maria das Gracas Rallo was born in 1946 in Rio de Janeiro. She has become the most awarded singer outside of her home country and was most popular internationally in 1982 with the song "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" from the musical Evita. Moreover, she has recorded over twenty albums and has amassed huge record sales throughout her successful career.

Review: The soul, sound and spirit of America's most vital, volatile and explosive revolutions curated by Soul Jazz as part of an art exhibition at London's Tate Modern Gallery; Soul Of A Nation explores how the political movement was translated and reflected by the musical at the time. A hugely creative and radical decade where art fused expressionism, poetry and spirituality, from the fiery jazz of Carlos Garnett, the raw vocal soul Oneness Of JuJu and of course the iconic sounds and ideas from Roy Ayers and Gil Scott Heron this marks the start of conscious black music.

  2. Johnny Hammond Smith - "Tell Me What To Do" (5:22)
Review: This limited edition new reissue series from Mukatsuku singles only label focuses on timeless tracks have not yet made it on to 7 inch to date. Both sides are indeed heavy and no doubt you have experienced some of them on a long player. Side one is from the 1975 Fantasy Records masterpiece Vibes of Truth from Three Pieces and "Self Dealin'". A nice little slice of funky goodness, strings and all: it's nice to see this tune on the format. The flip, is another jazz funk classic that has always gotten maximum spins on the LP. Johnny Hammond Smith's "Tell Me What To Do" from the brilliant Gears LP, a record that has definitely not been overlooked. This full length gave us "Shifting Gears", "Los Conquistadores Chocolates", "Can't We Smile", and more. Originally on Milestone, it has been a classic for years so a welcome release for todays 45 market. Juno copies come in exclusive sleeve packaging not available elsewhere .DJ support from Snowboy,DJ Spinna, Red Greg and more...

Review: Brownswood Recordings has high hopes for this debut album from the previously unheralded Yussef Kamaal, which brings together hyped producer Kamaal Williams (AKA Henry Wu) and fast-rising Afrobeat drummer Yussef Dayes. With such talent to draw on, you'd expect Black Focus to be rather good. Happily, it is, with the duo delivering a typically London-centric take on jazz funk. That means that they take as much inspiration from the work of Kaidi Tatham as, say, Herbie Hancock. The key to the album's success - and, yes, it is generally as special as Gilles Peterson suggests - is the fluid combination of Dayes' brilliant drumming and Williams' superb synth solos and effortlessly groovy Rhodes playing.

Review: The Awakening is the seventh and final studio album from The Ahmad Jamal trio. It was originally released way back in 1970, and in the years since has become something of a must-have for jazz collectors. Given that finding original vinyl copies is getting increasingly difficult, this reissue is more than welcome. Musically, it's a boisterous and hugely entertaining affair, with Jamal's virtuoso piano playing taking centre stage. With an accompanying drummer and double bass player providing steady, if unspectacular, backing, Jamal tickles the ivories like a man possessed. Along the way, he doffs his cap to a number of then popular jazz styles, remodeling them in his own image.

Review: NuNorthern Soul take a brief respite from their BJ Smith series so boss man 'Phat' Phil Cooper can indulge his love for Ryo Kawasaki. Focusing on the period that the '70s met the '80s, Selected Works pulls together five delicious slices of Kawasaki bliss from a boundary pushing discography that spans writing, arranging, producing and playing. For an introduction to Kawasaki, this release is near perfect, taking in sublime jazz through heaving slabs of funk to out-there electronic vibes. Extra context is provided in the extensive sleeve notes from Marc Rowlands that pull from his 2015 interview with Kawasaki. Despite being five tracks long, this still feels like a generous rifle through the Ryo archives.

  2. Groovin' You (6:31)
Review: Believe it or not, but the infamous BBE label, who started unleashing their barrage of musical waves all the way back in the mid 2000s are still run out of Hastings, an unlikely and yet bizarrely fitting location for a record imprint. Through the years, they've been responsible for releasing copious house albums from the likes of DJ Deep, Henrik Schwarz and Dimitri From Paris, among many others, but they've always had a soft spot for all things jazzy. Ricky Reid makes his debut under The James L'Estraunge Orchestra and the results are magnificent. "Closer" is a luvvy-duvvy sort of ballad, backed by Reid's deep lyrics and a euphoric wave of harmonics that sound all too angelic and soulful for a straight-up jazz tune; "Groovin' You" is the more percussive of the two, breaking out the jazz horns, unleashing a subtle glow of Rhodes fluttering, and providing a mighty fine groove.

Review: Mr Bongo's Brazil 45s series gets its rock on with two hairy grooves, both of which have enjoyed the sampler's crafty knives over the years. First up, Tom Ze's "Jimmy Renda-se" rolls with an oily sleazy groove that's peppered by a playful lyrical rhythm that transcends language barriers. Ben's "Take It Easy My Brother Charlie" joins the dots between Samba and very light Rock with all the signatures that made Mr Ben the legend he remains to this day with big vocal harmonies and infectious textures of Brazilian percussion.

Review: Already out in the ether since the summer, Kamasi's sprawling three-part jazz opus finally sees the light of vinyl day. Presented on heavyweight vinyl with his striking signature artwork, its delivery befits the album's rave reviews on its original arrival. Highlights, in case you haven't heard it yet, are the awe-inspiring switch from fusion to swing on "The Next Step" the album's overall sparing inclusion of vocal that make "The Rhythm Changes" really stand out and sparkle and the attention to detail on the narrative structure on reprise notes such as "Re Run Home". A must-have for any jazz/Brainfeeder fan.

Review: By the time he recorded Right On Brother in 1970, soul-jazz guitarist "Boogaloo" Joe Jones was at the peak of his powers. The album's enduring appeal is based, in part at least, in its thrillingly heavy fusion of elements of jazz, funk, soul, blues and psychedelic rock. Jones is naturally in fine form throughout, laying down a mixture of jazzy licks, wild solos and crunchy riffs, but is given more than ample support from a backing ensemble including organist Charles Earland (a star in his own right), saxophonist Rusty Bryant and, perhaps most impressively of all, legendary drummer Bernard Purdie. With such talent on display, it's unsurprising that Right on Brother is still held in such high esteem.

Review: Amongst serious jazz collectors, this deliciously obscure album by drummer Bert Myrick on influential early '70s Detroit imprint Strata Records has long been a "Holy Grail". That's partly due to the quality of the players on show - Myrick's quintet contained some of the Motor City's finest jazz players of the '60s and early '70s, including one-time Blue Note artist Kenny Cox - but largely because it's exceptionally good. Remarkably, it was recorded live at the University of Michigan nearly a decade before its 1974 release, and contains one of the most stunning jazz compositions you'll ever hear, Cox's epic "Scorpio's Child", as well as the Afro-Cuban jazz hit that is "The Latin Bit". Throughout, Myrick's drumming is exceptional.

Review: Classic jazz funk album from the legendary Johnny 'Hammond' Smith with a special version with six previously unissued bonus out-takes. Released in 1975 and his 32nd long player, it heralded a fresh chapter in his career that saw him exploring more electronic instrumentation and deeper shades of funk in a similar way to Roy Ayers or Bob James. The result was a timeless document that carries motifs of many of today's artists; the harmonies of "Can't We Smile?", for instance, smack of Plantlife while the punctuated piano work and mirrored squiggling synths on "Song For The Family" echoes with Flying Lotus-style whim. Also a key source of breaks for many junglists, Gears is a historic document that's not only played a strong role in electronic music but still sounds incredible today.

The High Five Quintet complements his delivery well with a Pimptones style soft-jazz structure but plenty of rhythmic welly. For a little more house and a little less jazz, flip for Opolopo's remix. Weighty and club-ready but with Mario's full vocal still intact, it's yet another notch in Opolopo's award-worthy remix bedpost

Review: Two beautiful compositions from the eponymous debut album'70s New York fusionists Tarika Blue's, never previously released on 45. Props to Athens From The North must be given once again!! "Truth Is The Key" is an ageless swinging jazz piece that still sounds futureproofed to this day... Largely thanks to the pristine musicianship, Irene Datcher's vocals and the liquid soul arp solo. Few tracks live up their name as much as "Dreamflower". Spacey, somnambulant and laced in swooning dynamics, it's not hard to understand why the likes of Erykah Badu sampled this one.

Review: There have been plenty of retrospectives on the absolutely essential work of Sun Ra and his Arkestra over the years, but trust Strut to go that bit deeper when they elected to focus on the Sun God himself. As the extensive title suggests, this collection places the focus on proceedings in the hands of Marshall Allen, the longest serving member of the Arkestra and current band leader. The results mean In The Orbit Of Ra feels a whole lot more personal and indepth, with over 25 years worth of Sun Ra-lead music documented. It's all been fully remastered from the original tapes and is pretty much the most conclusive introduction to the work of this pioneer one could hope for. In addition to the 13 track double vinyl set, this release also includes the double CD edition which includes a further 7 Ra gems!

Review: It's commonly known if you cut Will 'Quantic' Holland, he'd bleed in little Tru Thoughts logo-shaped droplets, such is the bond between the artist and label. The latest Quantic long-player for the South Coast label, A New Constellation, finds the Bogota-based musician leading a hand-picked selection of musicians called The Western Transient. Their focus? To realise a set of new compositions paying homage to the rich, lively and intimate quality of the classic soul and jazz recordings. That Holland should choose to follow his last LP, the explosive Magnetica, with 10 tracks of more traditional jazz and funk proves he's still not happy to stand still as Quantic despite having a hand in well over ten long players.

Review: Two crucial moments from Gil Scott Heron's immense repertoire; "When You Are Who You Are" takes the lead. Taken from his 1971 album Pieces Of A Man, it's a straight up homage to clarity and honesty told in the context that only Gil knew best. Flip for a very special alternative take of "Free Will". The title track of his following album, released a year later in 1972, the variations of this take (which has never been released on vinyl before) are subtle but strong enough to justify it a place in your collection.

Review: Commonly referred to as a "Hammond pioneer", jazz legend Brian Auger is an endlessly surprising artist. He's been revolutionising the jazz scene since the late 1970's, and it is indeed his technical skills and visionary use of the organ which stand him apart. This is loud and clear throughout the entire length of this second chapter of Anthology by the Freestyle label but, in fact, you get a bit of everything Auger-related. The schizophrenic organ playing is definitely there, but tunes like "MG Blues" or "Misty" also portray a deep musicality around all the other instruments within the arrangement, and it's his layering of grooves which is also constantly fascinating. Put it this way, if you want a jazz album that wanders a little further out into the ether, then this is what you need.
