Review: Amongst fans of Brazilian music, Sivuca is arguably best known for his 1973 cover of "Ain't No Sunshine" - later a favourite on the rare groove scene - which re-casts the Bill Withers classic as a sumptuous chunk of shuffling samba sunshine. Here, the track gets reissued as part of Mr Bongo's brilliant Brazil 45s series, alongside his lesser-known - but no less impressive - cover of Edu Lobo's "Ponteio".

Review: A bonafide masterpiece; Minnie's first album post-Rotary Connection should need little introduction. A cult hit in 1970, a global smash when re-released in 74, Come To My Garden hasn't enjoyed a reissue for over 10 years. Her first pure soul and jazz album, this was the album where the world truly understood Ripperton's incredible range and tenderness. Powered by the breath-taking orchestration and song writing of Charles Stepney and her husband Richard Rudolph, everything about this album stands the test of time from the dreamy pastoral haze of "Close Your Eyes" or the delicate harmonies and nightingale rush of "Expecting" via the untouchable "Les Fleur". Immaculate music history.

Review: Following the debut album Blackism earlier this year, Acid jazz / Wag club fusioneer Lascelle Lascelles continues to build on his latest explorative endeavour; Vibration Black Finger, a band driven by the ideals of post punk and spiritual jazz. Instantly plugging us in with the raffish loose-limbed electroid funk of "Get Up And Do It", Lascelles then blindsides us with a rainbow of elements ranging from the deep emotional soul of Maggie Nicols on "Got To Believe" and one of the most spiritual takes on "Amazing Grace" we've ever heard. Awash with the smoky sax, shimmering Rhodes and delicate horn work, the vibrations run deeper than ever.

Review: First released in 1979 during the heyday of Brazil's jazz-funk movement, Antonio Adolfo's Viralata has long been considered an era-defining release by those who know. Given that original Brazilian copies are frustratingly hard to come by, this official reissue from Far Out Recordings - who previously worked with Adolfo on his 2007 set Destiny - should be an essential purchase for all those who dig Brazilian music. A little more jazz-focused than albums by contemporaries such as Azymuth, much of "Viralata" is slick, polished and incredibly well produced, with notable samba influences amongst the unashamed tributes to leading American artists. As you'd perhaps expect, the musicianship is astonishing.

Review: The Brazil 45s / Mr Bongo outlet is back with its classic moves, coming through with some truly special soul blends out of the Brazilian golden era. Dalila and Neyde Alexandre feature in this latest 7", the former with 1968's "Canto Chorado", a slow-burning bubble of funky exotica - surely impossible to find in its original shade - and the latter with a funky little bomb from 1971 by the name of "Perplexidade" - surely the smoothest, sexiest soul number out this week! Lovely stuff.

Review: Brownswood Recordings has high hopes for this debut album from the previously unheralded Yussef Kamaal, which brings together hyped producer Kamaal Williams (AKA Henry Wu) and fast-rising Afrobeat drummer Yussef Dayes. With such talent to draw on, you'd expect Black Focus to be rather good. Happily, it is, with the duo delivering a typically London-centric take on jazz funk. That means that they take as much inspiration from the work of Kaidi Tatham as, say, Herbie Hancock. The key to the album's success - and, yes, it is generally as special as Gilles Peterson suggests - is the fluid combination of Dayes' brilliant drumming and Williams' superb synth solos and effortlessly groovy Rhodes playing.

Review: Tony Allen is on record as saying that The Source, his first album on iconic jazz label Blue Note, is the best recording he's made. Given his length of service and vast discography, that's a bold claim. Certainly, it's a fine album, with the legendary drummer and his selected musicians - mostly jazz players from Paris, plus a Cameroonian guitarist and previous Allen collaborator Damon Albarn on one cut - effortlessly blur the boundaries between Afrobeat and the kind of jazz pioneered by Allen's percussion heroes Art Blakey and Max Roach. It's a brilliant hybrid that fits Allen's unique style of drumming like a glove, and there's no doubt that the former Fela Kuti sticks-man is the real star of the show.

Review: In recent months, PIAS has re-released numerous albums from Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, a cult post-hardcore band that found fame by developing their own distinctive brand of "doom-ridden jazz music". The latest album to get the reissue treatment is 2005's Geisterfaust. It originally appeared three years after Black Earth, a macabre and unsettling full-length that remains their most celebrated work. The five epic tracks that make up Geisterfaust are a little lighter in tone, though still thoroughly absorbing and cloaked in the band's usual hazy atmospheres. At times the music tends towards the melancholic, with 20-minute opener "Zeigefinger" offering a near perfect blend of slowly evolving ambient jazz motifs and foreboding drum hits.

Review: Penny Goodwin's material is hard enough to come by in LP format, but the 7"s really are a sight for sore eyes. Luckily, we got Athens Form The North on our side, a stupendous soul and funk reissuer that has been delivering some serious heat over the last three years. "Too Soon You're Old" is a 1973 soul charmer, full of mystique and sensuality, the track moves slowly but with a great deal of funky swing to its bass. "Lady Day & John Coltrane" is a different kind of swinger, an uptempo funk ballad backed by flurries of organs and drum rolls, whereas "What's Going On" heads down a spiritual jazz tip to complete what is the most diverse soul single we've got to offer this week!

Review: This limited edition new reissue series from Mukatsuku singles only label focuses on timeless tracks have not yet made it on to 7 inch to date. Both sides are indeed heavy and no doubt you have experienced some of them on a long player. Side one is from the 1975 Fantasy Records masterpiece Vibes of Truth from Three Pieces and "Self Dealin'". A nice little slice of funky goodness, strings and all: it's nice to see this tune on the format. The flip, is another jazz funk classic that has always gotten maximum spins on the LP. Johnny Hammond Smith's "Tell Me What To Do" from the brilliant Gears LP, a record that has definitely not been overlooked. This full length gave us "Shifting Gears", "Los Conquistadores Chocolates", "Can't We Smile", and more. Originally on Milestone, it has been a classic for years so a welcome release for todays 45 market. Review: Claudio Casalini's Best Record label does a fine job of reissuing funk, disco and other curios from the mists of time, and so it goes with this wonderful slice of loose and live soul jazz. Grupo Almendra hailed from Venezuela, and they released their sole album Almendra in 1978 in a whirlwind of Latin American musicality and it had been consigned to relative obscurity. Whichever digger was lucky enough to discover this gem must have been very pleased indeed, for the quality of the music and the production is nothing short of remarkable, while the remastering has respectfully revived the sweet, soulful sound of Grupo Almendra.

Consisting of Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, and Alex Sowinski on drums, it's not hard to see why Badbadnotgood have been getting the usually hushed toned Gilles Peterson all exciting after a few listens of the nine tracks here. Review: Earlier in the year, WRWTFWW and Palto Flats both reissued Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's brilliant 1983 debut album, Through The Looking Glass. Now WRWTFWW has gone a step further, releasing another hard-to-find touchstone of Japanese ambient: Takada's 1990 collaboration with jazz pianist Masahiko Satoh, Lunar Cruise. It's another sublime set, all told, with Takada's impeccable percussion work - both jazz-style free drumming and more melodious instruments such as marimba, kalimba and xylophone - being complemented by Satah's slick and atmospheric synthesziers. It's perhaps a little more challenging in places than Through The Looking Glass - some tracks are dense and tribal in tone, or unashamedly experimental - but rarely less than wonderfully atmospheric.

Review: Here's something of a treat for fans of experimental, cutting-edge jazz: a rare recording of legendary French drummer Jacques Thollot - accompanied by some of his regular musical collaborators - captured at a live performance at the Faculty of Law, Paris, in 1969. Thrillingly free and fluid, it features Thollot not only providing his usual loose and frenetic percussion, but also tape loops. The highlight is undoubtedly the epic A-side workout - a 22 minute trip into psychedelic headspace - though there are plenty of gems to be found on the flip, too, not least the atmospheric, slow-burning "2" and Stockhausen-ish, delay-laden "3".

The LP has been reissued a number of times in slightly different formats over recent years, with this 8th Power edition being the latest. If you've not yet snagged a copy, snap one of these up post-haste. It opens with the brilliantly off-beat disco/jazz-funk/proto-boogie fusion of "Sweet Power Your Embrace", contains a string of heady slow jams and upbeat dancefloor workouts, and finishes with the superb "Dreams", one of the sweetest and jazziest soul cuts you're ever likely to hear.

Review: Believe it or not, but the infamous BBE label, who started unleashing their barrage of musical waves all the way back in the mid 2000s are still run out of Hastings, an unlikely and yet bizarrely fitting location for a record imprint. Through the years, they've been responsible for releasing copious house albums from the likes of DJ Deep, Henrik Schwarz and Dimitri From Paris, among many others, but they've always had a soft spot for all things jazzy. Ricky Reid makes his debut under The James L'Estraunge Orchestra and the results are magnificent. "Closer" is a luvvy-duvvy sort of ballad, backed by Reid's deep lyrics and a euphoric wave of harmonics that sound all too angelic and soulful for a straight-up jazz tune; "Groovin' You" is the more percussive of the two, breaking out the jazz horns, unleashing a subtle glow of Rhodes fluttering, and providing a mighty fine groove.

Review: Founded in the early '70s by karaoke's accidental inventor Irv Kratka, Inner City Records's stamp on jazz was one of the strongest during its 15 year tenure. Paying respect to traditional and fusion, it caught the world's attention and admiration in a very special way. Super-Intendant selector Kev Beadle was one of its most influential pushers on this side of the pond, so he's the perfect man to select and secure the 14 label-defining classics you hear right here. A great starting point for any Inner City starter and a well-considered, dynamic collection for collectivists, this captures a unique moment in jazz that still sparkles and pops to this day.

  1. The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
  2. Home Is Where the Hatred Is
Review: Wow, classics don't come much more special than this. A like-for-like repress of the 1970 RCA release, both sides here are soaked in Scott Heron's raw troubled soul. The endlessly sampled, hugely powerful and perfectly funky "Revolution" remains almost as poignant and prophetic as it was the day it was penned. "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" is much more personal and reveals his talent as a singer as much as the lead track boasts his poetry and ability to deliver a strong message.

  1. Harold Mabern - "I Want You Back" (5:24)
  2. Funk Inc - "Sister Janie" (5:14)
Review: Tennessee's legendary jazz pianist, Harold Mabern, is surely one of the kings of the mighty Prestige label, and his material helped bridge the gap between jazz and funk back in the 1970s, alongside the likes of Idris Muhammad, The Jimmy Castor Bunch and all those geniuses. "I Want You Back" is a stone-cold classic and contains one of the most hummable trumpet lines ever, and if you hear closely it's been reworked and sampled by none other than the King of pop when he was only a little one. Funk Inc's sublime "Sister Janie" resides on the flip, a more lo-fi funk bullett for the diggers, and complete with a dusty organ!

Review: Styled in some regards as a 'real-life Breaking Bad', the documentary The Sunshine Makers documents a partnership on a mission to expand the consciousness of the '60s set by means of a domestic LSD laboratory. Who better, indeed, to soundtrack such an affair than London-based synapse-shakers The Heliocentrics, whose irrepressible melange of psychedelia, rhythmic drive and third-eye-cleansing jazz unites the questing spirit of the '60s with the here and now. The evangelical zeal of the era's metaphysical crusaders may be viewed with some wistful nostalgia in the here and now, but their cultural legacy finds an uncanny parallel in this invigorating and addictive score from these modern visionaries.

Review: One of the richest, soulful voices in the European jazz, Biondi regularly works with the likes of Incognito. The High Five Quintet complements his delivery well with a Pimptones style soft-jazz structure but plenty of rhythmic welly. For a little more house and a little less jazz, flip for Opolopo's remix. Weighty and club-ready but with Mario's full vocal still intact, it's yet another notch in Opolopo's award-worthy remix bedpost

  1. On My Way To Harlem (Jazz & Cole edit)
  2. 1960 What ? (Jazz & Cole edit)
Review: A modern day Scott-Heron, without the myriad of demons on his back, Grammy-nominated jazz singer Porter has such a distinctive voice, charm and band command. He clearly lends himself well to edit culture (as proved by the huge success of the many "1960 What?" versions in recent years) and this 7" from Expansion is no exception. "On My Way To Harlem" is straight up narrative jazz with fantastic attention paid to the subtle samba and solemn horns. "1960 What?" speaks for itself; far more authentic to the original than the other versions that have popped up, if you've not already got a favourite edit - Jazz & Cole have the answer.

Review: Two premium Latin funk documents on one limited 45, Mr Bongo deliver once again: Marcos Valle needs no introduction to Brazilian music enthusiasts. "Mentira" is a self-cover as Valle takes his 69 classic "Mentira Carioca" and develops the dynamic with a vocal style that's highly reminiscent of Donovan. Flip for Toni Tornado's Black Rio anthem "Me Libertei". Fusing sleazy rock n roll with jazzy Latin soul, madly this is the first time it's ever graced a 45!

Review: Mr Bongo's Brazil 45s series gets its rock on with two hairy grooves, both of which have enjoyed the sampler's crafty knives over the years. First up, Tom Ze's "Jimmy Renda-se" rolls with an oily sleazy groove that's peppered by a playful lyrical rhythm that transcends language barriers. Ben's "Take It Easy My Brother Charlie" joins the dots between Samba and very light Rock with all the signatures that made Mr Ben the legend he remains to this day with big vocal harmonies and infectious textures of Brazilian percussion.

Review: On Where The Gods Are In Peace, their first album for five years, long-serving NYC Afrobeat revivalists Antibalas return to Daptone with fellow veterans Zapa Mama in tow. The all-female Belgian combo provides vocals on album centrepiece "Tombstown", a suite of track in three distinctive "Movements". All three parts, which are drenched in reverb and delay and operate at a far slower tempo than much of Antibalas's output, are decidedly cosmic in tone, with greater percussive intricacy, subtle Afro-jazz influences and an impressive variety of instrumental solos. Of course, it wouldn't be an Antibalas album without a rousing dancefloor epic or two, and happily both the Fela Kuti style "Gold Rush" and funk-fuelled "Hook & Crook" tick that particular box.
