  1. Dimenzio - "Bamba"
  2. Marius Cultier - "Diamant"
Review: Two Gilles Peterson classics on one 7 inch !! As per usual, the unstoppable Mukatsuku delivers the undeliverable, and somehow the label boss Nik Weston has managed to license a pair of sought after tunes to find on the second-hand market. It's the second instalment of the Club Jazz series with this 45 a Hungary vs France sound clash.Hungary easily wins this one thanks to the sublime rhythm that is "Bamba" by Dimenzio, an inimitable jazz-dance leviathan that manages to mash-up all the right elements of jazz together with something a little weirder and electronic - a truly supreme piece of music that is recommended to ANYONE. Marius Culter's "Diamant" is a high calibre jazz funk missile, and works beautifully as a stand-alone, but its somewhat swamped by the sheer quality of its counterpart. Recommended. As played by Dean Rudland, Mr Thing, Ashely Beedle, Faze Action,Scrimshire,Frank Booker,Nancy Noise and Pete from On The Corner Records etc

Review: This is the 45-only version of the title track from Snowboy's 16th album "New York Afternoon".With a different and special ending to the album version, his 23rd single features the amazing Jon Lucien-esque vocals of House music legend, Marc Evans. It's a percussion-driven Afro Cuban Jazz monster that'll please anyone from the Hancock fans to the Monk freaks. There's also an instrumental cut on the B-side. This is a limited pressing of 500 units.

Review: It would be fair to say that Gregory Porter is a man on the rise. In the four years since he made his debut, the jazz singer-songwriter has become one of the most name-checked soul men on the planet. Take Me To The Alley, his first album for three years, sees him flexing his musical muscles more impressively than ever before. After opening with the beautiful Marvin Gaye style "Holding On", and Curtis Mayfield-goes jazz thrills of "Don't Lose Your Steam", the singer-songwriter runs through a series of up-tempo and down-tempo compositions that sit somewhere between classic soul and evocative jazz.

Review: NuNorthern Soul take a brief respite from their BJ Smith series so boss man 'Phat' Phil Cooper can indulge his love for Ryo Kawasaki. Focusing on the period that the '70s met the '80s, Selected Works pulls together five delicious slices of Kawasaki bliss from a boundary pushing discography that spans writing, arranging, producing and playing. For an introduction to Kawasaki, this release is near perfect, taking in sublime jazz through heaving slabs of funk to out-there electronic vibes. Extra context is provided in the extensive sleeve notes from Marc Rowlands that pull from his 2015 interview with Kawasaki. Despite being five tracks long, this still feels like a generous rifle through the Ryo archives.

Review: Two outstanding Brazilian funk cuts straight out of 1971: "Esperar Pra Ver" is a laden with an immense orchestrated groove that's triggered by a lean, unforgettable bass guitar riff that matches Evinha's purring, slinky allure. "Que Bandeira" rolls with more of a poppy bossa flow with militant rim shots, swooning strings and a momentum that builds on every verse. Both tracks are taken from Cartao Postal, Evinha's third album that has been known to pass hands for as much as L500 in the past.

Review: Soul and jazz meet head to head on this new LP from Hot Casa, to truly bring the two genres into their natural alignment. Hola Adisa Farrar is a vocalist who hails from California via Jamaican roots, while Florian Pellissier brings though his Parisian jazz stronghold, and the pair lay down some unmissable Dingwalls-reminiscent gems. In fact, this is the perfect sort of album for those diggers looking for that perfect jazz-funk record, the one that slipped away; the drumming across all of the tracks is hypnotic but changes enough to retain that mysticism, the pianos glide over the melodies in a delicate but playful way, and Farrar's vocals are an utter beauty spilled all over the rhythm. A must have, and a warmly recommended album. Supported by Mukatsuku.

Review: With summer just around the corner, Gilles Peterson has decided to unleash some audio sunshine to get us in the mood. Magic Peterson Sunshine sees him digging into the vaults of Black Forest-based imprint MPS Records, a legendary outlet for whose vast catalogue encompasses nearly 50 years of eccentric, imaginative jazz. The 16-tracks take in a variety of jazz styles and moods, from the fizzing, up-tempo intensity of The Modern Jazz Group Frieburg's "Big P", and the undulating organ madness of Eddie Louiss' "Out Of The Sorcellery", to the harmonious samba-jazz of The Singers Unlimited, and some Dave Brubeck-style goodness from Mark Murphy. Throughout, Peterson's selections are as summery as a legendary back-yard barbecue.

Review: While some AOTN releases are perplexing exercises in digging and detective gymnastics, others are more of a straight-up selector pleasure for label bossman and soul merchant Fryer. Like these two classics from jazz funk artist Lucien. Both staples in Fryer's sets for 20 years, neither are hard to track down - "Would You Believe In Me" is on his 73 album Rashida while "Sunny Day" is on his 74 album Minds Eye - but neither of them have ever been on 45" before, either. Whether you're familiar with Lucien's unique fusions or this is your first encounter, this release works a treat.

Review: Wow, classics don't come much more special than this. A like-for-like repress of the 1970 RCA release, both sides here are soaked in Scott Heron's raw troubled soul. The endlessly sampled, hugely powerful and perfectly funky "Revolution" remains almost as poignant and prophetic as it was the day it was penned. "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" is much more personal and reveals his talent as a singer as much as the lead track boasts his poetry and ability to deliver a strong message.

Review: Classic jazz funk album from the legendary Johnny 'Hammond' Smith with a special version with six previously unissued bonus out-takes. Released in 1975 and his 32nd long player, it heralded a fresh chapter in his career that saw him exploring more electronic instrumentation and deeper shades of funk in a similar way to Roy Ayers or Bob James. The result was a timeless document that carries motifs of many of today's artists; the harmonies of "Can't We Smile?", for instance, smack of Plantlife while the punctuated piano work and mirrored squiggling synths on "Song For The Family" echoes with Flying Lotus-style whim. Also a key source of breaks for many junglists, Gears is a historic document that's not only played a strong role in electronic music but still sounds incredible today.

Review: Already out in the ether since the summer, Kamasi's sprawling three-part jazz opus finally sees the light of vinyl day. Presented on heavyweight vinyl with his striking signature artwork, its delivery befits the album's rave reviews on its original arrival. Highlights, in case you haven't heard it yet, are the awe-inspiring switch from fusion to swing on "The Next Step" the album's overall sparing inclusion of vocal that make "The Rhythm Changes" really stand out and sparkle and the attention to detail on the narrative structure on reprise notes such as "Re Run Home". A must-have for any jazz/Brainfeeder fan.

  2. Introduction (4:42)
  3. Happy Gamma Ray (15:13)
Review: The first release from the Axis Audiophile Series. Jeff Mills has formed an electronic jazz fusion band and this 12? is a recording of their recent performance in Kobe during the TodaysArt.JP Festival. Mills manages the decks, drums and percussion and is joined Detroit legend and Underground Resistance stalwart Gerald Mitchell (Los Hermanos/Galaxy 2 Galaxy), keyboardist Yumiko Ohno and bassist Kenji Jino. "Eventide" has the same kind of urban, uplifting soul as anything Kaidi Thatham or Mark de Clive-Lowe have made and isn't bad at all! On the flip "Happy Gamma Ray" features uplifting keys and emotive chords backed by funk bass and one of Mills' unmistakeable 909 drum machine workouts. It really seems that there's no limit to this Motor City legend's creativity which has spanned nearly 30 years and we're excited about this new chapter in the Wizard's sonic universe.

Review: Two monumental South African groove-beauties for the latest installment of the Afro Funk Gems series from Mukatsuku. First up is a trip back to 1970, just three years after Letta Mbulu escaped apartheid and moved the US (and fifteen years before she collaborated with Michael Jackson on "Librarian Girl") the horn-laded, feel-good "Mahlalela" came from her third album and was licenced by Tamla Motown in South Africa too for a rare as hen's teeth 45. Flip for an edit from Mr Mukatsuku himself as he breaks down Dick Khoza and the Pelican Club house band's politically charged "Chapita". Stunning. As played by DJ Spinna,Diesler,Luke Slater,Volcov,Smoov,Scrimshire,Ashley Beedle etc

Review: Etta's career-defining debut album At Last showed the world what she was capable of. Unfettered breadth spaced over three 45s, delivered by Chess off-shoot Argo, each track explored a different style from blues to jazz to doo-wop to smoking soul. Complete with her two most legendary songs ("At Last" and "I Just Want To Make Love To You") the real beauty is in the less-celebrated numbers such as the carnal sensuous "Seven Day Fool", the chop-slapping gospel power of "Hold On Me" and the sleazy guitar lines and time signature switches of "Spoonful". A serious piece of soul history.

"Here You Are" is an unabashed throwback to classic jazz sentiments and signatures; smoky, yearning and barbed with just the right amount of heartache. Flip for a remix from a true disco legend John Morales. With an editing, extending and remixing reputation that pre-dates even reel to reel machines, his M+M touch to "The Best Of My Love" is as polished and shiny as you'd want it to be.

Review: Despite the rather glum look Mark 'Snowboy' Cotgrove is sporting on the cover of New York Afternoon, this new Snowboy & The Latin Section album is a reason to celebrate as its been some 30 years since the Afro-Cuban act first put out a record!! Since the Flaco Jiminez-featuring Mambo Teresa 12" dropped back in 1986, Snowboy & The Latin Section have become torchbearers for the authentic Latin jazz style and they sound as vibrant as ever on this sixteenth album. A glorious Afro-Cuban jazz extravaganza which captures the block party feel of '70s Latin jazz and early salsa, New York Afternoon features vocals from both rising jazz vocal star Jen Kearney and Baltimore house music legend Marc Evans as well as Polar Bear saxophonist Pete Wareham.

Review: There have been plenty of retrospectives on the absolutely essential work of Sun Ra and his Arkestra over the years, but trust Strut to go that bit deeper when they elected to focus on the Sun God himself. As the extensive title suggests, this collection places the focus on proceedings in the hands of Marshall Allen, the longest serving member of the Arkestra and current band leader. The results mean In The Orbit Of Ra feels a whole lot more personal and indepth, with over 25 years worth of Sun Ra-lead music documented. It's all been fully remastered from the original tapes and is pretty much the most conclusive introduction to the work of this pioneer one could hope for. In addition to the 13 track double vinyl set, this release also includes the double CD edition which includes a further 7 Ra gems!

  1. When You Are Who You Are (3:22)
  2. Free Will (alternative take #1) (2:55)
Review: Two crucial moments from Gil Scott Heron's immense repertoire; "When You Are Who You Are" takes the lead. Taken from his 1971 album Pieces Of A Man, it's a straight up homage to clarity and honesty told in the context that only Gil knew best. Flip for a very special alternative take of "Free Will". The title track of his following album, released a year later in 1972, the variations of this take (which has never been released on vinyl before) are subtle but strong enough to justify it a place in your collection.

  1. Harold Mabern - "I Want You Back" (5:24)
  2. Funk Inc - "Sister Janie" (5:14)
Review: Tennessee's legendary jazz pianist, Harold Mabern, is surely one of the kings of the mighty Prestige label, and his material helped bridge the gap between jazz and funk back in the 1970s, alongside the likes of Idris Muhammad, The Jimmy Castor Bunch and all those geniuses. "I Want You Back" is a stone-cold classic and contains one of the most hummable trumpet lines ever, and if you hear closely it's been reworked and sampled by none other than the King of pop when he was only a little one. Funk Inc's sublime "Sister Janie" resides on the flip, a more lo-fi funk bullett for the diggers, and complete with a dusty organ!
