  2. Carlo Gambino - "Acid Casual"
  3. Ben Dean - "Track Three"
  4. Michael Scott - "Underdisc"
Review: "After 10 years away from vinyl, 3am Wax Vol.1 hails a return to 12' on the label, now in its 13th year. The EP features an all-3am regular artist cast, three making their debut on vinyl and one making a return to 12' after a 12 year gap. 3am boss Al Bradley opens the EP, while label regulars Carlo Gambino, Ben Dean and Michael Scott all return for the 12". With over 400 releases and remixes between the artists, the EP showcases in-house talent from the label - the emphasis on quality rather than names. Ranging from Berlin-influenced deepness through to raw analog acid house, the EP has been doing damage at label gigs throughout 2015 including Berlin, Ibiza, Copenhagen, New York, London & label-home Leeds, with plaudits and support also coming in from a wide range of DJs from the promo."

Review: William Arnaldo Smith has released everywhere from Greta Cottage Workshop, Smallville and UntilMyHeartStops. We've heard the great effort that was the label's inaugural release entitled Good Music Hips, Bad Music Fists E.P. but he appears to have backdated this release as NATURIST 000. "Ceramics" displays the producer's usual 'airy' and organic deep house sound while "Heritage On The Sign" has faint Oriental aesthetics over its broken house beats and lush vintage synths. Finally on the flip is the breathtaking ambient journey "Sleeping Assault" full of splendid bell textures and emotive keys floating away in trails of endless reverb.

Review: Copenhagen Underground Posse recruit more new blood with freshman B From E with "Porno TR-XXX". Instantly making up for the EP title's search engine-unfriendliness with four sparkling grooves, it's clear this young man knows his roots and how to build a palette. Each cut hitting with a classic Chicago bounce and layers of Fingers-style uplift and hope in the melodic layers, we're consistently tapped into a feeling and narrative that's both on-point and heavy in heritage. From the daydream twinkles of "Porno" to the soft-focus jazzier twist of "Let's Play", this pushes all the right buttons.

Geeks (12")
Cat: BARNBARN 01. Rel: 20 Mar 17
  1. Geeks (8:38)
  2. Voodoo (7:37)
Review: Despite having a hand in the running of Studio Barnhus - and, of course, regularly releasing on the imprint - Axel Boman has decided that he needs a new sub-label on which to release his music. This first BarnBarn outing sees Boman in fine form, emphatically laying down a marker via the Steve Reich style cyclical riffs, wonky new age melodies, swooping chords, sustained horror notes and layered tribal house percussion of "Geeks". It's a fine track, though nowhere near as wild and alien as flipside cut "Voodoo". This composition, where relentless waves of electronics and bubbling lead lines crash against a crunchy rhythm track, somehow manages to be both pleasingly positive and fuzzily distorted.

Review: Highly respected Frenchman Alexandre Gouyette makes his debut on Berlin institution Cabinet Records with two perfectly contrasting grooves: "Soothing" naturally lives up to its name with soft focus dubby synth ripples and a classic drum arrangement while "Visions" rolls and punches like a Kenny Dope beats track. Broken, spacious, dubbed-out and physical, Brawther's reputation for rough finesse is so strong you can properly feel it.

  4. Cocoa Powder (7:43)
Review: On this groovy and entertaining 12", Stassy welcomes sometime Elephant Moon producer Lee Burton to Taverna Tracks for the first time. Burton's brand of deep house - musically rich and melodious, but with suitably bumping beats - is a perfect fit with the Berlin-based label's previous output. There's much to admire throughout, from the ultra-deep and spacey shuffle of "Circadian Rhythm", to the UK garage influenced deep space bounce of "Cocoa Powder". Best of all, though, is opener "Horizontal Falls", where sun-blushed synth motifs and dreamy, head-in-the-clouds chords are accompanied by an undulating bassline and skipping, US garage inspired drums.

Review: Their names might be a little sarcastic but the sounds are serious: the E-Beamz collective continue to cook up precision grooves. This time Windows XP and Relationship Goals take a side each with two equally chunky, warm and relentless workouts. The former gets their sensual swag on with a purring sample and a whirlwind of boompty bomp around it while the latter chugs out with widescreen kicks and a grainier, trippier sample. Both seriously kill it.

Review: Open Recordings continue their mission to champion quality chunky deep house wares from a range of artists on their third release. This time around Italian duo DNArt take the lead with two original jams, and they get things heating up nicely with "Short Story" before tripping things out on the swirling funk of "ZZYZX". On remix duties, Nick Beringer drops a tightly wound minimal house shuffle all over "Short Story" and then Frazer Campbell works up a deadly stripped down version of "ZZYZX", nudging the mellow tones of the original into prime late night material.

  2. Ride (Audion remix) (6:54)
Review: Jack of all trades Dubfire teamed up with Swiss electroclash queen Miss Kittin for the dancefloor hit "Ride" in late 2016; a pop inflected tech house cut with sexy vocals that was aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Here it gets some remixes, firstly by Diynamic Records boss Solumun who'll have you boppin' away happily like a punter on his infamous Boiler Room Tulum session with his adrenalised rendition. But it's all about Matthew Dear aka Audion throwing down a fully tripped out exercise in dancefloor mayhem as per usual: his deep and minimal version crammed full of generous white noise washes, druggy vocals and ultra wonky synths. All you need right here!

  2. Step 414 (7:15)
Review: Bass-obsessed cockney studio don East End Dubs has been pleasingly prolific of late. This two-tracker, which follows hot on the heels of the slamming ENDZ012 EP, should excite both East End boys and West End girls. A-side "Arcane" is predictably driven forwards by bumpy, garage-influenced dubs and a wonderfully fluid sub-bass line, though it's the fluttering, near ambient chords and intergalactic electronics that naturally catch the ear. Flipside "Step 414" is an altogether deeper affair, with delay-laden bleeps and ricocheting percussion hits clustering around another speaker-shaking bassline and crispy rhythm track. It sounds like the sort of record that would sound great in a very dark warehouse at six in the morning.

Review: Athens based label Echovolt return with Vancouver's Electric Sound Broadcast aka Elka who delivers some lush/lo-fi soul- techno as he did for that fine EP for Pacific Rhythm last year. It's back to the good all days with Juno 106 basslines, the vintage hiss of old drum computers and FM pads on the rather nice "You Can Be" while "Finedrawn Overcast" does it's best impression of early Larry Heard circa '86. On the flip there's more gold on the deep acid journey "Echoplex". Will certainly appeal to retroverts into Acido/SUED or likewise the Meme house of Lobster Theremin.

Review: Jon Voickmer and Michael Salsal's Fusal project was worthy of a home like the Malonian label, and we'd been looking out for the duo's next release ever since their debut for 87 Records back in a now distant 2015. "Calimero" picks up where they left off, and we're back with another fine assortment of post-minimalistic glitch and neo-classical experimentation - a true head-spinner in all senses of the word. "Handicap" is no less entrepreneurial in its choice of sounds and melodic constructions, except that the groove feels a lot more dance-centric here, which is revved up one step further on the frantic patterns of "Delailoop", another intriguing minimal excursion that will undoubtedly please the electronic shut-ins.

  3. Andres Garcia - "Invisivel" (9:31)
Review: The Synthetic Gold story continues to unfold in the most curious nooks and crannies of the minimal techno scene, as this third volume welcomes in tracks selected by Anestie Gomez. Khan is in a looped up, insistent cycle loaded with alien synth tones and a focused rhythmic hiccup of a beat, truly aiming for the psych-out end of the night. Eloi Brunelle makes things a touch funkier on "Neneh", deploying choice splashes of dubbed out colour in between the sharp strut of the drums. Andres Garcia then spreads himself across the B-side with the loping funk of "Invisivel", working all manner of freaky sounds around the scuffed sway of the beats.

Review: The Gravity Graffiti label is fast establishing itself as an outpost for uncompromisingly strange records, and that's just fine with us. After the wonderful slouching boogie of the Soichi Terada / Whodamanny split 12", this time they've called upon none-stranger Japanese maverick Yoshinori Hayashi to turn out an A side that veers from free jazz esoterics to the best kind of mutant rave throwback imaginable. On the flip side DB.Source gets into a delightful tropical melee on "Anapo" before "Ciane (GG Records Trance Mix)" sends the release off into an exotic wilderness. This is the kind of record you wouldn't be able to imagine before you heard it, making it a perfect addition to the Gravity Graffiti canon.

  3. Housewife (6:23)
Review: When it comes to house and techno reissues, few labels have quite as strong a reputation as Mint Condition. Since launching last year, they've delivered must-have material from Pepe Bradock, Paul Hester, Robert Owens and Circulation, amongst others. Here they turn their attention to the back catalogue of house-era Matthew Herbert, delivering a new pressing of 1996's Classic Herbert. All three tracks are amongst the producer's strongest dancefloor workouts. Check, for example, the bumpin', proto-boompty drums, mind-altering sub-bass and killer vocal samples of "Got To Be Movin", or the whistling melody lines, Detroit techno influences and fluid riffs of the deliciously positive "Fat King Fire". Arguably best of all, though, is the jazzier "Housewife", which feels like a template for so much of his later deep house material.

Review: Albuquerque's premier deep house label does it once again with this on-point clutch of hard-funking jams from their extended family. Hi Times absolutely smash it on the A side with the buttery garage tones of "Journey Into Jazz", working up a mean piano hook and a hard swinging beat to devastating effect. DB Selective takes a more choppy approach without losing any of that shuffle, and then Scott Garcia brings the absolute toughest stuff on "Music Takes You" for those who want it deep and pumping. These are gold-plated party starters, guaranteed to shake down any dancefloor worth its salt.

Review: Lumberjacks In Hell just keep on trucking, this time calling upon the legendary skills of Karizma in setting their latest A side alight. "Work It Out" is a fiery slice of gospel choppery, whipping up a fevered line in vocal insistence that hardly needs a rhythm section to make you move, but still has the necessary goods underneath the hood. Marcel Vogel follows a similar tact on "I Got Jesus", spacing the jam out and working a bit more groove, but certainly tapping into the same spiritually enhanced vein. Karizma then returns to make an aptly named "Stomp Dub" of the track, rounding off an absolute beast of a party record.

Review: Kreon & Lemos continue their exploration of dubby motifs and crafty beat programming on this latest missive for Equivalence, and at this point it's safe to say anything could be possible from the adventurous Greek duo. Each of the artists has a side across which to express their own vision of "Avatone", starting off with Kreon. The urgency of the funky breakbeat rhythms powering both versions is hard to resist, with Kreon's version ramping up the nagging synth lines in between the drums while Lemos opts for a more meditative refrain around the intricate percussion.

Review: Dutch producer Larry De Kat is building up a rather impressive discography. This Pets Recordings debut follows hot on the heels of appearances on Dungeon Meat, Banoffee Pies, Adults Only and Lazare Hoche, amongst others. There's plenty to admire amongst the four tracks, from the post-apocalyptic deep house creepiness of "I Know You Can Hear Me" - all weighty sub-bass, echoing riffs, garage-influenced beats and dusty aural textures - and fluid, tech-tinged deepness of "Amlou", to the shuffling dub-house hustle of "She Doesn't", where ear-catching hand percussion and slowly flowering electronics crowd around a superb, sub-heavy bassline. In other words, it's a rock solid collection of club-ready cuts that ticks a lot of boxes.

Review: Brother's Vibe hit a certifiable high point with "El Baile", a house jam that has stood the test of time with its sunny disposition and Latin spirit. Now SOM Records have invited Tony Lionni to revisit the jam with vocalist Juan Pachanga in tow, crafting a fresh confection of deep house perfection timed just right for the days getting longer. The instrumental on the A side is the kind of jam that could roll on endlessly and never grate, so laid back are the pattering percussion and shimmering piano chords. For a little more presence, Juan Pachanga's turn on the vocal version is just the right kind of added treat.

Review: Since returning to action last year after a near two-year hiatus, Koos 'Ion' Ludwig has barely put a foot wrong. For Real We Are Not For You marks his first appearance on Toi.Toi. Musik, and predictably continues his fine run of form. On the A-side you'll find "Not For You", a woozy and slippery concoction where off-kilter electronic bleeps and delay-laden blips rise above a skewed, bass-heavy rhythm. Turn the record over and you'll find "Are We For Real", a wonderfully evocative combination of slow-burn acid lines, ghostly chords, low register cello strings, pulsing pads, and mind-altering, minimalist house percussion. It tends towards the melancholic, but is all the more impressive for that.

Review: Wolf Music alumnus Medlar teams up with multi instrumentalist Ishmael here for the inaugural release of West Friends which is brought to you by Peckham record store Rye Wax as their new sublabel. "Bell, Everywhere 1" is deep house that delves into the truly exotic. There's more funky and syncopated rhythms complimented by lush bell tones on "Bell, Everywhere 2" while on the flip, we've go "B2 Or Not B2", a cute drum track featuring an odd selection of hits that somehow work together supported by pawn shop synth bleeps.

  3. Forget The Rest (7:39)
Review: Indie-disco-house hero Moscoman is back with Snake & Pygmy; the second release for his new Treisar imprint. Given the trend for melodramatic journey tracks as popularized by labels like Life & Death, the man from Tel Aviv delivers an interesting (piss) take on the sound with his rather dark dancefloor drama of "Snake In A Hat" although it could just be a strange coincidence. It's more like the oddball producer we know on the woozy and cosmic slow burner "Pirate Of The Lost Ark" up next on the flip; full of trippy arpeggios, woozy synth leads and what sound like some live drums: nice touch. Finally "Forget The Rest" goes for some nice Middle Eastern disco vibes that merge with house beats and ample use of the cowbell; never such a bad thing.

Review: Hungarian minimal hero Nami is back following up some great releases of late on Eastenderz, Neoconcepto and of course his eponymous imprint which now presents the Hip Pocket EP. Starting off in fine form with the title track, a funked up and bumpy microhouse groove that will appeal to fans of Minibar or Musique Risquee; its subtle breaks offering an even nicer touch overall. On the flip its a much deeper and sultry affair on the smooth "Radio Delta" with its jazzy aesthetics and lo-slung sensibilities.

  6. The Liquid Side Of Plants (3:48)
Review: Naples duo Whodamanny and Milord are anything but normal. Laying down subtle, soulful sandy-toed gems for the last few years, their sound has that holy grail ability to flex equally into house and balearic quarters. Take stuttering drum boogie joints such as "Far Away Horizons" or the MAW-at-their-chillest "Suspicious Movements" and you're on the floor but take the trippier, slo-mo dreamier cuts like "Exotica Movement" or the juicy-bass chugger "Flames Of Light" and you're flawed. Throw in unabashed bumpers like the acid tweaked "Momentum" and you've got the perfect soundtrack to an entire party from warm-up to sesh, club to beach.
