  1. 100Hz - "Inappropriate" (8:28)
  2. Octave - "Racing" (6:43)
  3. Rufus - "Conseguenza" (7:15)
  4. Rufus - "Conseguenza" (Cab Drivers remix) (8:44)
Review: New label Lumbago drop a new, tasty, hand-stamped house belter to soothe all of your winter blues, and it's clear that the imprint are very much here to stay. Instead of going for the glory-hunting, they've decided to release music from a selection of rising names, but from the sounds of "Inappropriate" by 100Hz, the quality factor is very much present. Even Octave's "Racing", a rough, analog house banger with an industrial edge, packs enough of a punch to make us wonder why we haven't been name-dropping him more often. Over on the flip, Nightdrivers member Rufus, who is often heard alongside Mass Prod, drops the supremely funky "Conseguenza", a disco-tinged house roller that's given the dub-house treatment by the increasingly present Cab Drivers. Excellent material, right here.

  1. 76-79 - "57 Hertz" (Czevski remix) (6:53)
  2. Tommy Vicari Jnr - "Because You Can't See Dreams In The Light" (5:59)
  3. Tommy Vicari Jnr - "L I W F U" (6:30)
Review: It's been a while since the Albion stable graced our platters, but they're back in style with more of that on-point house music voodoo for the heat of the night. This single is a vessel for the various sides of Tommi Vicari Jr, who rolls out his Czevski alias to deliver a bruising remix of "57 Hertz" by 76-79. It's a reverb-soaked, dubbed out affair with a rock solid rhythm section and plenty of trippy FX tweaking on top. On the flip it's a different story with a similar feeling as we get the straight up Tommi Vicari Jr material in the shape of two killer tracks crafted for transcendental moments of dancefloor hypnosis.

  3. Floating Around
  4. Mystique
Review: As a regular contributor to institutions such as Force Inc Music Works and Mosaic, Mark Ambrose has plenty of heritage in the deep and dubby crossover between house and techno, and so this archival release on his own Crayon imprint brings forth more of that meditative manna. "Close" rides on a subtle and shuffling percussion line while a perfectly weighty bassline ticks away underneath, sitting in contrast to "Hokus (Edit)"s tightly-wound and fidgety techno roll. "Floating Around" lives up to its title with a more sleepy kind of pad-focused refrain, while "Idea 3" delivers the kind of soul-soothing synths and rhythms that Fred P et al have built their names on.

  1. Stomp Change (7:09)
  2. Freaks Of The Industry (6:34)
Review: Aside from a slurry of EPs for important house and techno labels like Rekids Area Remote, Canada's Nathan Barato has become a fundamental member of Jamie Jone's Hot Creations crew, and that in itself is a sign of respect. The present Freak Beater is the man's fourth EP for the label, and "Stomp Change" kicks things into motion with an instantly penetrative, deeply engrossing groove that sits somewhere between tech-house and high-speed electro-juke; the tune is one to bang out at peak time, that's for sure. "Freaks Of The Industry" is no less abrasive and floor-proof, except that the groove is a lot more fluid, leaving more space for the percussion to mould around the track's freaky bass ensemble. Another pair of HC party starters...

  2. Venus Requiem (5:57)
Review: **REPRESS ALERT** Chicago's The Nite Owl Diner originally released "Stay" by local heroine The Black Madonna back in 2014 to much fanfare. A wonderful edit geared for some life affirming moments on late night dancefloors that was no doubt honed by the artist's (known to her Dad as Marea Stamper) skills behind the decks for several years at Windy City institution Smart Bar. On the flip there's the even funkier and discofied "Venus Requiem" full of neon-lit synths and cracking Linn drums; there's an odd familiarity throughout as it builds and builds.. and drops right at that moment to set the dancefloor alight again. It's just one of 'those' kind of tracks and here's your chance to snap up another copy of this remastered gem before it flies off the shelf again.

  3. Maxx E (6:38)
Review: Under the Danced Til Midnight alias, DJ Andy Anderson has always produced music that eschews easy categorization. His two previous 12" singles successfully blended elements of funk, soul, disco, hip-hop, house and Afrobeat. This madcap, all-that-counts-is-the-dancefloor feel is continued on "She Can't Love You", which laces Ijeoma's soulful, R&B style vocal over a backing track that variously doffs a cap to fuzzy funk, boogie, breakbeat and disco-house. Similar could be said about the more breakbeat-minded "Maxx E", which feels like a reworked instrumental dub of the title track. Speaking of reworks, the EPs's highlight is arguably Egyptian Lover's punchy electro remake of "She Can't Love You".

  3. Hoofe (6:49)
  4. Grand (7:10)
Review: Turkish producer Tolga Fidan is seemingly able to switch styles at will. Throughout the course of his decade-long career, the Berlin-based producer has shuffled between various forms of house, techno and experimental electronica. This second 12" on his TFR series finds him in full-on electro mode, blasting off into space via thrilling layered, Drexciya-inspired workouts such as "Gertu". As you'd probably expect, there's still plenty of subtle variety present throughout the EP. Contrast, for example, the fizzing, alien electronics, woozy bass, spacey chords and metallic percussion of "ZUNBS346", the acid-driven melancholy of closer "Grand", and the 4/4 electro stomp of "Hoofe".

Review: Folamour's brand new label is For Heaven Use Only... But don't worry - we won't tell him if you play them at any dancefloor in the real world. The Moonrise Hill hero takes the lead with a lush brushed drum tropical boogie cut that's all light in the synths and woozy in the horns while Lo Life sedates us to the very soul with the lush and loopy "Gucci Tennis 84". Wrapping up the second side we have a Carter-level boompty tub-thumper "Baciami Subito" from Kaffe Creme and an energised jazz techno jam from Marc Bianco that features the slipperiest fretless bass runs this side of Azymuth HQ.

Review: On previous outings for ISM, Night Noise and Boogie Boutique, the Gemini Brothers have shown an acute grasp of both contemporary nu-disco, and vintage electrofunk sounds. This 12" for Skint is something of a curveball, and sees them serve up a range of exotic, intoxicating concoctions. Lead track "Thessali Noir" layers haunting, Arabic style vocal samples and Persian instrumentation atop a druggy, post-disco groove (a fine, bleep-heavy, acid-flecked Justin Robertson Deadstock 33 remix is also included). On the B, you'll find the Acid Arab-inspired spookiness of "Experienced", and the trippy, dark Italo-disco workout "Say It".

  4. DRZN (7:35)
Review: The artist formerly known as David Ghettotronic returns with more Romanian influenced minimal house on his new Tervisio imprint. The Colombian producer (by way of Miami) now calls Berlin home (naturally) and has had a steady release schedule in the last few years with great stuff on Serkal, Vatos Locos and Leftback. Storming beats of the woody and organic variety accompany some mysterious sound designs on the dynamic opener "Cheska" all accompanied by the mandatory rolling bass. "All Good Here" is a complete change of style altogether on this funky tech house cut. It's just as 'rolling' but the beats are definitely of the 808 variety, have a whole heap of swing and that 303 acid over the top adds a lovely touch if we do say so ourselves. On the flip, the aforementioned track gets remixes by Romanian hero Iuly.B who takes it back down into hypnotic territory with his signature sound. Assisted by some mind bending modular synth sounds and keeping the rolling bass intact. It's wicked and will mix well with current stuff by Pressure Point or OdD.

Review: Imbue are Maximiliano Cortes, Eduardo J. Alvarez & Ignacio Vallejo who channel the very 'in' vibe of right now that fuses minimal techno with classic electro sensibilities. They inaugurate their eponymous imprint with this wonderful four tracker. Starting off with the stripped down acid cruise control of "Constante" which will appeal to fans of B12. On the flip is the splendidly serene and chill deepness of "Inima" which channels the slightly neon lit 80s pop aesthetics that Andrei Ciubuc and KiRiK have done in recent times. It's all about the lovely acoustic guitar work really, which continues on the final track "Esper", supported by subtle trance arpeggios: but ATB this it ain't we assure you: more like trippy afterhours shenanigans at an outdoor festival in Romania... if you catch our drift!

Review: Sounds Of The City continues to fly the flag for soul enhanced house music from unsung heroes as Javonntte joins the fray with some absolutely un-missable grooves. "Fantasy" seems to capture some of the heated romance of the Cassio Ware classic but reworks it into a fresh, bumping concoction of the highest order. "Late Night People" meanwhile heads into slinkier territory with its killer chord flourishes and tightly wound beat, and then "MRDJ" turns the heat back up with a powerful lead hook purpose-built to get hands held aloft. This is the best kind of upfront house music, oozing soul and sophistication while keeping things utterly funky at all times.

  5. Kid Sublime - "Wings Of Love" (feat Han Litz) (6:21)
Review: Set up as a continuation of their podcast back in 2008, this Russian label joins the dots between jazz various genres. Footwork House Jam no.1 is a homage to the global house culture and the eponymous Moscow-based club night in particular. The idea behind this compilation 'is to provide the fuel for house dance culture and house movement to expand further on' the label claims. Starting off on the A side with Baltimore legend Karizma and his jagged groove therapy session titled "Church Chords" there's more quality with Brit Nubian Mindz with the glitched out disco house of "Check Da Discotheque" which will contort you even more with its nifty beat repeat effects. On the flip is Intr0beatz with the sexy late night deep house of "That DUB" where he goes for that timeless formula of emotive chords, swing fuelled rhythms and sampled diva vocals to full effect.. but wait for that bassline to drop, like seriously! Finally, Dopeness Galore darling Jacob Otten aka Kid Sublime drops the soulful and life affirming broken beat nu-jazz experiment "Wings Of Love".

Review: Roving Romanians Khidja take us on a trip of a lifetime with "Impossible Holiday"... We take off with the stately, cavernous and slightly fuzzy "Die Wilde Spirale" and land in our improbable destination to the spiked out synth washes and dubby bass palpitations of "Pinnacles". We enjoy all sorts of unperceivable activities to the bouncy, analogue bed and fluttering, head-soothing arpeggios of "Haetrin" then fly home to our comparably dismal existences on the droning, groaning and ever-morphing "Kraftfield". Happy travels.

Review: Pictu doesn't put out Unanim releases anywhere near as much as we'd like. But when he does, we all need to pay attention. After almost two years since Herodot's release Dutch deepsmith Ludwig jumps on board with two dense but sparse grooves that instantly suck you in. His sound fits the label instantly: "Mania GR" pops and jerks with a classic jacking, bubbling funk while "Wishkey In An Icejar" is drenched in total sub pressure as the drums are smothered with layers of low end frequencies and a tripped out spoken narrative. Let's hope both parties don't it leave us hanging too long.
