Review: There's something pleasingly old-fashioned about the work of mysterious producer A Sagittariun. To date, the enigmatic artist has delivered a string of strong 12" singles that sit somewhere between classic Detroit techno, mid-'90s electronica (think Pete Namlook with a dancefloor pulse, or stargazing ambient house) and early U.S deep house. Dream Ritual, his first full-length, continues in a similar vein, offering the kind of stargazing melodies, wide-eyed atmospherics and tactile, synth-heavy rhythms that bristle with cosmic intent. There are some startling diversions from the formula, too, not least the rubbery slap bass, paranoid vocal samples and vintage drum machine hits of "The Age of Sin".

Review: It's taken Baba Stiltz a while to settle on a sound of his own. While his early material - released as far back as 2011 - stuck rigidly to skwee and hip-hop influenced downtempo grooves, latter projects for Studio Barnhus have seen him head in a much more immersive deep house direction. This imaginative and eccentric debut album, presented as a doublepack with full artwork, stitches together these disparate strands. The results are impressive, with vibrant, Balearic-influenced deep house cuts nestling side by side with robust acid jams, scratchy downtempo grooves, grandiose synthesizer soundscapes and skewed instrumental pop. It's an assured and curiously off-kilter debut, which should appeal to those who enjoy more leftfield strains of deep house.

Review: Blip Discs surfaced earlier this year with a debut 12" from O'Flynn that got the likes of Gilles Peterson and Bradley Zero all hot under the collar. The tropically minded label is back with a second release and its founder Tom Blip is responsible for the cuts which will resonate with any fans of Afro percussive work outs. Lead track "Wrong Guaco" is the epitome of relentless, basically one extended conga workout that will significantly nice up any self-respecting dancefloor! On the flip "Shekere" gets more mysterious and intense with its tribal drumming inducing higher levels with enduring state of trance. Tip!

Review: Swedish producer Axel Boman seems to have been around forever, delivering solid and occasionally sensational deep house. In fact, he first emerged in 2009, and somewhat surprisingly Family Vacation is his debut album. It's a rather impressive beast, if truth be told, offering a whirlwind trip through his inspirations, from the downtempo analogue wooziness of "Let's Get Nervous" and jaunty, jazz-wise, US-influenced deep house of "Son of a Plumber", to the dreamy electronics and off-kilter rhythms of "No! No! No! No!", and the Theo Parrish-goes-Calypso vibes of "Bottoms Up". Most impressive of all, though, is the dark, humid, tropical pagan flex of "Kings & Emperors". Its' African voodoo atmosphere offers a startling alternative to the quiet positivity found elsewhere.

Review: Taken from their superb spring album Miami, "Broken Pieces" features the vocal delights of Jamie Lidell. And if that's not enough to grab your lugholes, the layered percussion and techno brutality of the rhythm most certainly will be. Remix-wise Dolkraut space the groove out with a shuffle twist while Mouse On Mars trips the groove out with post-trap fracturism. "Skiffle It Up" maintains the trip-factor with abstract time signatures and spooked out string cries and sirens. For a final remix hoot Max Graef adds a sense of electro boogie sexiness. Releases don't come much more far-reaching and progressive.

  3. Make You Mine
  4. Baby I'm Yours (La Funk Mob remix)
Review: 2010 looks like it's going to be a very big year for Parisian producer Thibault Berland aka Breakbot. As part of the Ed Banger family he's been producing a steady slew of quality remixes for Metronomy, Justice, Sebastian Tellier and Late Of The Pier, and now he's stepping up with excellent new material of his own.

In the vein of seriously smooth late 70's rockers like Hall and Oates and Michael McDonald, the title track has tons of charm courtesy of a vocal from Irframe. Add to that the modern production of Holy Ghost or Discovery-era Daft Punk and it's a pretty special disco-flavoured slice of sophisticated French pop.

Another man who's becoming hot property for 2010 is German producer Siriusmo, who turns in a remix that matches Breakbot's sense of retro fun and studio mastery. Far from Siriusmo's more Techno roots, this mix is almost a Psychedelic rock song, complete with cowbells and chiming 12-string guitars. It's weird and wonderful, and has more than a nod to Archie Bell and The Drells' seminal "Tighten Up".

Review: Over the last 18 months, Kiwi siblings Chaos In The CBD have become one of the most sought-after talents in deep house - thanks, in no small part, to fine release for such hyped labels as Church and Rhythm Section International. Here they present their second 12" on Japan's mighty Mule Musiq. It's a typically confident and ear-pleasing affair, with opener "Garden of Terrors" showing their skill in mixing enveloping chords and sticky aural textures with dense, African-influenced tribal drums. This growing passion for loose, layered organic percussion is also evident on the humid "Asmat", while closer "Subterranean Storm" sees them back in dreamy, jazz-flecked deep house mode. Like their other tracks in this style, it's something of a slow-burning dancefloor delight.

  4. My Way (Tanner Ross & Slow Hands remix)
Review: Marking the second single to be lifted from Will Saul's nourish pop project Close, "My Way" marks one of the album's many forays into vocal territory with a sterling turn from Fat Freddy's Drop crooner Joe Dukie. As well as the calming tones of the original, there is plethora of remixes to accompany the release from regular Saul collaborators for his Simple and Aus labels. Dusky take the lead first with a pumping, garage-fuelled version that keeps the melodics in a moody refrain and the vocal fully intact, while Midland shakes things up with a simmering revision that injects some grainy synth fuzz into the mix and chops the vocal down to one looping sample for the main hook. Tanner Ross and Slow Hands get utterly blissed out with their snail-paced version that does away with sonic detritus and lets the warmth and musicality shine through.

Review: Alin Crihan isn't one of the better-known producers on Bucharest's thriving minimal house scene, but he is certainly one of the most talented. The Grosso Mondo EP is his first release for two years, and follows on from two superb - if arguably underappreciated - 12" singles. The A-side title track sets the tone, wrapping semi-discordant orchestral notes, manipulated electronics and phased dub effects around a rich bassline and swinging tech-house groove. Flipside "Circa" is an altogether warmer and dreamier affair. While Crihan utilizes similarly trippy effects and intricate percussion programming, the bassline and melodic flourishes draw far greater influence from dub house and dub techno.

Review: Sharing the first fruits of a collaborative booze-up in the studio, Makers Part 1 features Mike Shannon and The Mole & Hreno's own takes on the audio love-in. There's trademark styles from all the component artists present, most notably in DeWalta's honey-coated saxophone tones. On Shannon's mix, there's no mistaking his trademark growling synth sound and stripped-back shuffle, but it blends beautifully with the more natural tones of sax and an organ hum to produce a deep cut with imagination at its core. The Mole and Hreno feature a more rolling kind of groove, still placing the emphasis on those warming tones at the centre of the track but applying them to a different end.

  3. Die Roh - "Her First Time" (5:51)
  4. Trudge - "Series 7" (4:20)
Review: Italy's Die Roh have come a long way since their first release for Vae Victis back in 2012 alongside Blawan, releasing plenty of militant house and techno with a rugged, analogue feel that sits just right with us. They're up on Axe Traxx this time for the label's second outing, and they're joined by newcomer Trudge. The former delivers a deep, lean deep house chugger in "Coming Out", relatively more docile than their previous material but it's still cut-throat enough to sound booming on a system and provoke a series of bodies to start moving thanks, in part, to its kinetic percussion rhythm and sublime keys. Trudge come through with "Give", a sludgy house monster with a brittle drum flex and banging toms built for destructive DJ use. On the flip of the wax plate, Die Roh are back with the funkier, more uplifting house bullet "Her First Time", but "Series 7" by Trudge is the killer on here, the shadiest house tune of them all that reminds us of Greg Beato at his very best. This is one hell of a tip - don't miss it.

Something Else (1-sided hand-stamped 12")
Cat: DIGWAH 02. Rel: 26 Dec 16
  1. Something Else (11:22)
Review: Mystery label Digwah debuted in the summer, with a soul soaked trip into minimal techno territory that was supported by Ricardo Villalobos, amongst others. Like that 12", Something Else is a single-sided, hand-stamped affair, with no information given about the identity of the producer (or producers) involved. This cut retains the late night techno vibe of the original, but with percussion and whizzing electronic noises that recall classic tech-house from the likes of Swag, Rob Mello and David Duriez, rather than Berghain-friendly minimalism. The subtle, party-minded approach is confirmed by the use of cut-up vocal samples from Cuba Gooding Jr's "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend", which also featured on Nightmares On Wax's 1990 bleep techno anthem, "Aftermath".

Review: The E-Beamz label recently debuted with a fine 12" of jungle-influenced haziness from Tim Shug and DJ Playstation. Here, they swiftly move on to EP number two, showcasing tracks from debutants DJ Boring and Magma. The former's A-side cut, "Winona" - so called because it utilizes vocal samples from an interview with actress Winona Ryder - sounds like a long-lost early '90s cut: an ultra-deep treat full of deep space chords, analogue deep house beats and psychedelic TB-303 abuse. Magma's dustier flipside cut, "You", explores similar old skool pastures, making use of both barnstorming techno drums and sweaty jungle breaks. Throw in ridiculously deep chords and riffs, and some eyes-closed vocal samples, and you have another late night winner.

Review: Though his career has taken many turns over the last decade, DJ Koze has remained that most illusive of creatures: a minimal-minded producer with an ear for a melody. This fourth full-length, packed to the rafters with big-name collaborations (Apparat, Caribou, Ada and Matthew Dear all feature), continues his move towards the home-listening sphere. So, while many of the heady rhythms and shuffling grooves hark back to his stripped-back past, Amygdala impresses with its woozy songs, genre-straddling fusions (see the modern soul meets deep house of "Homesick" or the steppy, tropical vibes of "Marilyn Whirlwind") and homely atmosphere.

Review: Barcelona's DJ Seinfeld has been making quite a name for himself at the moment with releases on Lobster Fury, Natural Sciences and Danish imprint Endotherm. Aquatic acid house, colourful melodies and dreamy vocals. "Flyin' Thru Sunrise" is a dusty and overdriven exercise in deep house loopiness, reminiscent of Florian Kupfer's well received SAD edits. It's a much more stompin' affair on the B side with the gnarly acid warehouse techno of "Chat Shit Get Loved", until he dives deeper once again (where he really excels in our opinion) with the early Chicago house throwback of "Beginning Of An End" taking you to the days of Frankie Knuckles and Jamie Principle exploring a new sound of inner city soul circa '86.

Review: Although still in its infancy, Mannheim's Kusi is off to a great start and following up some great releases by the likes of David Nicolas and Sedee, we now have locals Fabe and Toby T with "Not Your Clap" which travels the border of druggy afterhours minimal and early noughties micro-house glitch. On the flip local hero and Oslo Records mainstay Federico Molinari does a fine remix which injects some bleepy mini-funk into its aesthetic and reminiscent of classic Daniel Bell or Run Stop Restore.

  4. Away From The 16th (Diego Krause remix) (7:26)
Review: Fabian 'Fabe' Winkels (he of Salty Nuts label fame) and Tolga Top are old pals, having both contributed to Understate:ment Records' first release this time last year. The Trunk EP marks their first collaborative 12", and also the debut of Berlin's The Gathering Records. Both "Trunk" and "Away From The 16th" are quietly funky affairs, built around glitch-heavy rhythm tracks, popping electronics, and the type of quirky sample cut-ups that were once the forte of both Pepe Bradock and Matthew Herbert. Remixes of both tracks are offered-up, too. While Diego Krause delivers a smoother, tech-tinged deep house interpretation of "Away From The 16th", "DJ Honesty" sticks closer to the impressive source material on his bustling, bass-heavy tweak of "Trunk".

  4. Walking On The Macadam (8:06)
Review: Smooth and sultry deep house for fans of Dessous and Freerange on offer here from Berlin's Fauxpas Music and new signee, Frenchman Folamour. On the A side are "Chapeaux Rouge" and "Baise En Ville" respectively. Up tempo, dancefloor effective numbers which feature all the right elements; lush Rhodes piano and pitched down female vocals with flanged guitars and a swing fuelled rhythm section to boot. What more do you want? Well the B side starts with "Lost between Friendly Fires" which is a deeper, slow motion affair for the afterhours, as is "Walking to the Macadam" with its sombre keys and orchestral samples perfect for the drive home.

  3. Chill Bill (7:13)
Review: The fifth 12" on Funk E's Great Empty Circle comes from Marvin Gain, a producer making his belated vinyl debut. As first missives go, it's quietly impressive. Check, for example, the assured drum programming, subtle acid flashes and bustling bassline of locked-in late night shuffler "Drinking About You", which sits somewhere between the sparse funk of minimal house, and the clanking hypnotism of vintage European tech-house. With its creepy melody lines and exotic rainforest sounds, "Las Vegans" is a more humid riff on the same basic formula, while the more bass-heavy "Chill Bill" moves slightly further towards hazy tech-house territory.

  1. Jacques In The Box
  2. Our Futur (Loud disco mix)
Review: Laurent Garnier began the LBS (Live Booth Sessions or Loud Bass & Samples) concept in 2010, as a means of experimenting with live techniques. The crew incorporates Garnier himself, as well as Benjamin Rippert on keyboards and Scan X on machines. The Timeless EP begins with "Jacques In The Box" delivering a full-impact slice of techno sprinkled with surging synthesisers and climbing polyphonic key strokes. The percussion seems to melt into one element as the kick drum drives this fast, hard and slightly euphoric techno jam. Loud Disco's mix of "Our Futur" will surely capture the ears of any large crowd caught in the reverie of a darkened nightclub, with a notable chord progression and sharp, saturated snare drum.
