Review: Since debuting on Bromance in 2013, Kaytranada has become one of the leading lights on the future R&B scene. Given his track record, it's understandable that there's plenty of hype surrounding 99.9%, his long await debut album. The 15-track sees him showcasing the depth and variety of his beat making, production and compositional skills. Thus, the string-drenched jazziness of "Bus Ride" is followed by the off-kilter R&B pop of "Got It Good", and the Onra-ish synth-hop soul of "One Too Many" sits side by side with the double bass, Rhodes and Latin-influenced beats of "Despite The Weather". It's pretty expansive, clocking in at 15 tracks deep, but the quality never dips throughout. Recommended.

  2. Way (188 Krew mix) (3:01)
  3. 1234567 (7:50)
Review: Firecracker's impeccable UNTHANK series continues, with boss man Lindsay Todd securing a first collaborative EP from Lemme Kno, a surprise hook-up between Maxmillion Dunbar and Rush Hour 'No Label' alumnus Morgan 'DJ Isle O'Man' Buckley. "The Tie With The Most Stripes" provides an excellent opening, with the duo exploring their shared love of instrumental hip-hop, Luke Vibert and sparkling dancefloor electronics. "Way (188 Krew Mix)" continues in a similar vein (think vintage Kenny Dope-style Jeep beats and samples meets lo-fi synths), before they reach for the jugular on standout cut "1234567". Built around early hardcore style breakbeats, loved-up chord sweeps, new age synthesizers and bleep melodies, the track harnesses both the musical zeitgeist, and each producer's distinctive talents.

Review: When they delivered their stupendously sample-heavy debut album, Since I Left You, back in 2000, The Avalanches were tipped for big things. For some reason, they failed to capitalize, all but fading from view. That album remains a much-loved listen for many people so there has been an expected degree of anticipation regarding this follow-up, Wildflower. Happily, it's something of a resounding success, with the Melbourne trio serving up another whirlwind trip through sample-heavy, hip-hop era psychedelia. At 21 tracks deep, and with more changes of direction than your average three-week cycle race, it's something of a beast. It is, though, well worth the effort, as repeat listens simply uncovers more layers of hazy, glassy-eyed goodness (be it bluesy trip-hop, slipped disco, dreamy acid-pop, folksy beat-scapes or baked hypno-rock).

Review: On Boombox 1, the dusty-fingered crate diggers at Soul Jazz Records have turned their attention to the nascent hip-hop scene developing in New York in the late '70s onwards, gathering together independently released disco-rap and electro released between 1979 and '82. Accompanied by a 40-page booklet telling the story of rap's independent pioneers in impressive detail, it's another essential history lesson. You'll naturally find hard-to-find cuts from visionaries including Spoonie Gee (the quick-fire rhymes and low-slung disco breaks of "The New Rap Language"), TJ Swann and Master Jay, plus killer selections from virtually unknown names. Check, for example, the synth-laden boogie-rap of Neil B's "Body Rock", the hip-shakin' disco hustle of Bramsam's "Move Your Body", and the rubbery brilliance of Sweet G's "Boogie Feelin' Rap".

Review: On its' initial release in 1997, Death In Vegas' debut album, Dead Elvis, was considered one of the high points of the post-Britpop big beat scene. By mixing live instrumentation, heavy drum beats and a wide variety of influences (blues, country-rock, psychedelic rock, dub reggae, trip-hop, the Chemical Brothers, Meat Beat Manifesto etc), Richard Fearless and company created an iconic set that quickly became the soundtrack to hundreds of student house parties. 20 years after it was recorded, it still sounds great - as this deluxe reissue proves. This edition's second disc contains some killer B-sides and bonus tracks from the period (including the rather fine "Dr Clean"), plus original remixes from Monkey Maffia and Dave Clarke, amongst others.

Review: Twins Paris and Amber Strother and musical sister Anita Bias are dream-pop trio KING, with We Are King their much-vaunted debut album. The trio first emerged in 2011 with a self-released EP that set the tone for the King sound - think vintage '90s RnB blessed with a glassy, ambient sheen - and it's explored to greater effect on this superb album. The 12 tracks offer up a perfect chemistry of Paris Strother's production skills and the harmonic vocals of Amber and Anita resulting in a smooth relaxing ride through the Kingdom. For anyone that has grown up on a healthy diet of US RnB and the neo-soul movement, We Are King will be a total, dreamy delight.

  2. LL Cool J - "Mama Said Knock You Out"
Review: The best thing about the Original series is it highlights just how ingenious many hip hop producers were in their implementation of sample source material. See this edition which pairs up "Trip To Your Heart" by Sly & The Family Stone with "Momma Said Knock You Out", the stone cold early '90s classic from LL Cool J. Listen to both tracks and it's clear Marley Marl uses only a smidgen of Sly's original, the "Ah, ah, ah" that is uttered harmoniously when the chorus arrives. The way he flipped it alongside elements of tracks from James Brown, Digital Underground, and The Chicago Gangsters is real proof of his genius. A great seven for the collection, no doubt.

  1. The Turtles - "I'm Chief Kamanawanalea" (Chief Rocca edit) (3:42)
  2. Steady B - "Serious" (BDP 12" remix) (4:28)
Review: 1968's "I'm Chief Kamanawanalea" is perhaps one of the greatest forgotten nuggets of pure breakbeatism, and the original by The Turtles dates back to 1968. The date isn't perhaps that surprising in relation to the sounds used and the quirkiness of the tune, but it's the fact that it sounds like straight-up hip-hop from early 80s NY; Chief Rocca aka J Rocc does a bit of editing on this version, but the meat and bones of the original are definitely there. Steady B features on the flip with a remix from BDP, and this one is a pure throwback hip-hop banger like they used to make them - think Run DMC but much more from the underground.

Review: Bouncing his time between Antibalas and his Marcos Garcia and Chico Mann projects, Chico returns after several years of silence with a sweet slice of lolloping broken soul. With its soft padded synths and cotton wool hug of Kendra Morris's vocals, there's a delicate tumble to proceedings as we nod and slide into a sound that's remained in its own soul universe since emerging almost 20 years ago. When done as well and with as much authenticity as this, it's timeless.

Review: According to legend, when the Wu-Tang Clan formed like Voltron on their debut album in 1993, GZA happened to be the head - an appropriate place for a man also called The Genius. Yet at the time few could have predicted that his 1995 masterpiece ''Liquid Swords'' would be considered one of the most substantial lyrical journeys in hip-hop history. At the peak of his powers as a producer, Wu-Tang mastermind RZA crafted the album''s distinctive soundtrack at his basement studio in Staten Island; a haunting landscape of dusty samples, sharp snares and menacing urban gloom, with frequent interludes of dialogue from the classic Samurai flick ''Shogun Assassin''. Cerebral, strategic and precise with his words, GZA crystallizes a range of influences - from chess to kung-fu films to mob flicks and Eastern philosophy - into sharply delivered rhymes. The album features appearances by the entire Wu-Tang Clan, and includes the auspicious debut of Killah Priest on ''B.I.B.L.E.'' Acknowledged as one of the 100 Best Rap Albums (The Source) and Top 100 Records of the 1990s (Pitchfork), ''Liquid Swords'' is now available as it was intended to be experienced, on double vinyl, with audio remastered from the studio tapes.

Review: Following a series of self released albums over the past three years which saw them expand on hip hop classics with an auspicious level of jazz virtuosity, Canadian jazz trio Badbadnotgood grace the Innovative Leisure imprint with this enlightening collection III. Consisting of Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, and Alex Sowinski on drums, it's not hard to see why Badbadnotgood have been getting the usually hushed toned Gilles Peterson all exciting after a few listens of the nine tracks here. If you dug those cover versions you will love this album.
