Review: The seventh release for Parisian label Sampling As An Art comes courtesy of Atlanta's Byron The Aquarius with the Euphoria EP. If you checked Byron's prior 2016 releases for Sound Signature and Wild Oats, you'll know to expect a diverse range of styles all produced with consummate expertise and that's exactly what we have on the Euphoria EP. There's some dusty hip hop joints like on "Intro", Coming To Detroit" and "The Essence" but there's also some real proper deep house. Like when we get treated with the wonderful "The Love Below" which is reminiscent of Fresh 'N Low and the rather KDJ sounding collaboration with S3A "Nights In Tokyo".

Review: Since debuting on Bromance in 2013, Kaytranada has become one of the leading lights on the future R&B scene. Given his track record, it's understandable that there's plenty of hype surrounding 99.9%, his long await debut album. The 15-track sees him showcasing the depth and variety of his beat making, production and compositional skills. Thus, the string-drenched jazziness of "Bus Ride" is followed by the off-kilter R&B pop of "Got It Good", and the Onra-ish synth-hop soul of "One Too Many" sits side by side with the double bass, Rhodes and Latin-influenced beats of "Despite The Weather". It's pretty expansive, clocking in at 15 tracks deep, but the quality never dips throughout. Recommended.

Review: Byron The Aquarius resurfaced earlier this year after a nine-year absence, delivering the future jazz/deep house fusion of High Life on Sound Signature. This speedy follow-up on Kyle Hall's Wild Oats label is, if anything, even better. Warm, rich, soulful and evocative, it includes six superb cuts. These variously touch on off-kilter modern soul ("Co$mic $hit"), Herbie Hancock-influenced deep house (the jazz-funk synths, woozy chords and smooth beats of "Moments In Life"), intergalactic hip-hop beats (the impeccable "Space N Time"), blissfully Balearic house (the hazy positivity of "The Sun"), and jazz-influenced house rollers ("Better Tomorrow").

Review: The Originals label is on straight-up fire at the moment, coming through rough and ready with a whole heap of gorgeous disco reissues ready to be cranked-up by contemporary producers. "Funky Music Is The Thing" by The Corvettes, a funky-as-hell soul train, is beefed up by Mr Fantastic with a tidy little edit, whereas The D.O.C and their "Lend Me An Ear" hip-hop joint gets a nice touch-up of the modern B-Boys.

Review: Japanese hip-hop crew Southpaw Chop keep themselves busy with this new single "How It's Done". For this release they bring two big guests to the table: Kool G Rap and Craig G from Juice Crew. Their previous work "Finger Prints On The Record" (feat. A.G. of DITC) was originally only released in Japan, but made its way further abroad gaining great attention from hip hop fans in the US and Europe. This reunion with the Juice Crew builds and brings chemistry, pushing boundaries and sharp rhymes from the two. Things get even better when matched with Southpaw Chop's signature horn sounds and for those who love Cold Chillin', the label design must be mouth watering. This 7" will send ripples through the 2016 hip hop scene - it's a must buy!

Review: It would be fair to say that Studio K7 has pulled off something of a coup in getting Kenny Dixon Jr. to agree to compile and mix the latest installment in the long-running DJ Kicks series. It is, somewhat remarkably, the legendary Detroiter's first commercially available mix set. This triple-vinyl edition features a whopping 19 cuts - all in unmixed form - from the 30 track mix. Musically, it's a blazed, jazzy, soulful and groovy as you'd expect, and contains a mixture of downtempo beats, nu-jazz and hazy house cuts from the likes of Flying Lotus, Dopehead, Peter Digital Orchestra, Nightmares On Wax, Soulful Session and Lady Alma.

Review: Dam Funk has been foundational in crystallising Stones Throw's undisputed leadership in the nu-school funk and boogie scene, and he's up there with the great J Dilla in our books. Naturally, he's been asked to mix up the latest series of DJ Kicks and, ladies and gentlemen, it's a real masterclass - one of those comps you can safely leave on and let it do its thing on you. The mood is personified by a fine blend of electronics and tougher, funkier rhythms by artists such as Index, Moon B, and Dam himself. There are also a few rare cuts by Chicago house legend Gemini that fit in perfectly, and a whole heap of wavy, Cali-inspired electronic funk. Badass.

Review: On Boombox 1, the dusty-fingered crate diggers at Soul Jazz Records have turned their attention to the nascent hip-hop scene developing in New York in the late '70s onwards, gathering together independently released disco-rap and electro released between 1979 and '82. Accompanied by a 40-page booklet telling the story of rap's independent pioneers in impressive detail, it's another essential history lesson. You'll naturally find hard-to-find cuts from visionaries including Spoonie Gee (the quick-fire rhymes and low-slung disco breaks of "The New Rap Language"), TJ Swann and Master Jay, plus killer selections from virtually unknown names. Check, for example, the synth-laden boogie-rap of Neil B's "Body Rock", the hip-shakin' disco hustle of Bramsam's "Move Your Body", and the rubbery brilliance of Sweet G's "Boogie Feelin' Rap".

Review: Given the critical reception rightly afforded to Tahliah Barnett's superb debut album as FKA Twigs, it makes perfect sense for Young Turks to rustle up a swift reissue of FKA Twigs, the four track 12" that announced her to the pop music world last year. This EP was the first instance of Barnett's ethereal vocals weaved in amidst production work from Arca that was at times floating, others crushingly pressurised. Naturally the effects of the music are heightened when combined with Jesse Kanda's mind bending videos ("Water Me" especially) but late comers to the magic of Twigs will be all over this. Do check "Papi Pacify" as Arca is on some "Cry Me A River" era Timbalaand tip.

Review: Copenhagen based imprint Tartelet is back with some more dusty hip hop inspired deep house courtesy of Kickflip Mike (previously seen on the likes of Money $ex) with newcomer Julius Conrad on the Three Turtles EP. The title track gets its freak on straight away with its funk bass and guitar licks supporting some wacky auto-tuned vocals on this ode to stoned inner city Berlin soul. "BBQ Skit" is straight up hip-hop of the dopest kind; they worked the MPC hard on his one you can almost hear the lighter going off in the background. On the flip "Voodoo Dude" is the track that really gets its groove on though, with its rusty broken beat supported by dreamy Rhodes and a collage of tripped out samples is perfect for a stoned bike ride through Tempelhof Park on a sunny Sunday.

Review: One of the earliest wave ambassadors to enjoy large label accreditation, Sami Baha delivers his first full Mu EP and doesn't disappoint: "Mavericks One" is laden with so much sub bass it's clinically obese while its topline remains slim-line and floaty. Deeper into the EP we're seduced by oriental charm throughout; "Still" and "Dough" massage the soul while "Tozko Paran" twists the senses with trippy Q&As that shouldn't work but really do. "Cataphract" plays the consummate slow-trap club bumper while "Chunk" pays homage to all the fatties out there with its restrained energy and delicate arpeggio-led dynamic. A stunning debut EP for Mu.

Review: Beyonce's "visual album" Lemonade makes it to CD for the first time, following weeks of discussion about the film clips that accompany each of the 12 tracks. It's an expansive, grandiose affair, full of expensive orchestral arrangements, unlikely collaborations (Jack White pops up on the rock/R&B hybrid "Don't Hurt Yourself", while James Blake tickles the ivories and sings on "Forward"), big name production credits (Diplo, Just Blaze), and even bigger ideas. Beyonce herself is in fine form, variously sounding fragile, boisterous and strangely angry, while the accompanying music touches on a myriad of styles whilst retaining a core R&B-goes-pop feel.

Review: The third album from Brainfeeder soul man Thundercat gets the coloured vinyl treatment. His haziest, softest and most consistent set so far, his falsetto dulcets wrap around a whirlwind of styles that are tailor made for vinyl. Sloping and sliding into each other all the way, from the slippery wah-wah guitar disco of "Them Changes" to the Plantlife-style funk of "Lone Wolf & Club" to the trippy ambience of "That Moment", we're gradually moved slowly, softly and sweetly throughout.

Review: Unstoppable grime ambassador Skepta finally drops his long-awaited fourth album Konnichiwa and it's a complete shutdown. Reflecting his paradigm shift since 2011's Doin It Again, this is Skepta at the very peak of his game. The successful singles are all present and correct as are serious cameos from the like of Pharrell (the stripped back and funky "Numbers"), Novelist (the gritty freestyle-firing "Lyrics") and Wiley & Chip on the sense-blurring "Corn On The Curb". With co-production and cameos from his BBK compadre and brother JME, Skepta's stayed true to his foundations with every bar. Next level.

Review: The past few years have seen Seven Davis Jr firmly grip his second chance at music with both hands, his signature to Ninja Tune for a debut album coming after working with the likes of Izwid, Apron and Classic. With his forward-thinking brand of modern electronic soul now firmly established, the US musician is given the intriguing chance to compile Future Society, a collection of tracks from some of his favourite new, unsung and like-minded forward thinking artists to highlight the talent he has encountered on his travels. Shouts to UK label R2 for giving Davis Jr the platform to express himself, with the producer calling on artists from New Zealand, U.S.A., U.K. and Switzerland to provide mostly exclusive and unreleased tracks spanning electronic, soul and house tracks with a pioneering spirit.
