Review: Japanese rapper MC RYT hails from the Serpat Crew and this expansive new record finds him step out with producer Djar One and Kesta AKA Kool Kest. It is a limited album that packs in plenty of different and effective styles from classic boom bap sweeter R&B-tinged joints via jazz swing sounds. Favourites include the laidback and louche sounds of 'On & On', the deep rolling 'Space Talk' with its hard bars and 'Izakaya Style', a nice jazz and loungey cut with a guest sport from Le Jules. This is a superb addition to the shelves of any beat lover and hip hop head.

Review: Yallah Gaudencia Mbidde was born in Kenya and raised in Uganda and has been a mainstay in the East African rap scene since first emerging in 1999. She mixes up rhymes in English with local languages Luganda, Luo and Kiswahili and has a poetic style that incudes experimental deliveries of her conscious lyrics. She has crept into the mainstream in Uganda and after her debut album in collaboration with Yallah and Berlin-based producer Debmaster she now offers the more charged-up Yallah Beibe. Review: The debut album by Malcolm McLaren - former manager of the Sex Pistols and the New York Dolls, and infamous producer in his own right - was known as Duck Rock. First released in 1983, it showed off as far-flung a mix of genres as hip hop, international music, rockabilly, and disco, not least due in part to its hand in the production duties by Fairlight pioneer JJ Jeczalik, Trevor Horn and Anne Dudley, all of whom would form Art of Noise, as well as further guest appearances by Africa Bambaataa and Thomas Dolby. An electrifying medley of the sample-tastic sensibility of the day, the album also plays out as a form of satire, parodying the oft-chaotic flights of fancy indulged by the very same era.

Review: Joe Mount of lovable scuzz pop outfit Metronomy mans the latest volume in the long running Late Night Tales, a series who always seem to get the best results out of an unexpected cast of participants (Belle & Sebastien, MGMT, Trentemoeller and Midlake being recent inductees). It's hard not to get sucked in from the sugar sweet opening of Outkast's "Prototype", which is the first of several tracks that demonstrates Mount has a penchant for slow bumping R&B and outsider hip-hop with Tweet, Sa Ra and a Dr Octagon classic also appearing. A typically far reaching approach to genres applies here with the cosmic jazz of Chic Corea happily mingling with Autechre and Two Lone Swordsmen, and American synth oddities Geneva Jacuzzi and Appaloosa mingling for attention with The Alan Parsons Project and Herman Dune. The de-rigueur cover version arrives with a Metronomy rendition of Jean-Michel Jarre's "Hypnose" while Paul Morley ends the selection with a spoken word piece. This vinyl edition has 18 of the tracks spread separately across two plates as well as the mixed CD and a booklet!

Review: Whether it be his eighth mixtape or tenth album (as fans, journalists and the interweb often disagree on the categorisations of his myriad projects), endlessly prolific MC and producer Michael Jordan Bonema, better known by his succinct stage-name MIKE, returns with one of his most mature and clearly visualised works to date. Beware Of The Monkey owes somewhat of a debt to Bonema's mentor Earl Sweatshirt; particularly his 2018 album Some Rap Songs, with both projects taking a chopped n' screwed approach to boom bap, intertwined with warped soul and r&b samples, whilst subtly highlighting the modern form of avant-garde outsider hip-hop which is burgeoning from the inside out. Fully self-produced under his dj blackpower alias, the LP is an exercise in abstract simplicity, evoking MF DOOM at his most challenging, yet all the while retaining a welcoming warmth that prevents the material from ever crossing over into impenetrable territory.

Review: Originally released in 2016, just one year after his major label breakout GO:OD AM; the fourth LP from the late, great Mac Miller showcased a remarkable pivot from quick-witted, slightly offensive alternative hip-hop bangers to a more introspective and vulnerable style of neo-r&b. Written whilst in a relationship with pop megastar Ariana Grande (who also features on the record as well as being credited for the inspiration to the track 'Cinderella'), the project focuses on both external romantic love as well as love of the self and one's surroundings. With an impressive guestlist featuring Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak and Ty Dolla Sign, and exuding Miller's first declarative foray into more nuanced, melodic and lush soundscapes, the album remains an outlier in an immensely expansive discography, which sadly still feels as if it was only just beginning to blossom before Miller's tragic and untimely passing.

While such role hopping could have resulted in a sonic mess, the set sounds surprisingly coherent, not least because the thread running through it all is Miller's painful soulsearching and well documented mental health issues. As a posthumous full stop to a life ended all too soon, "Circles" certainly hits home hard.
