Review: Two highly creative, hardworking London jazz fusionistas - Ezra Collective's Armon Jones and Sonic Verse's Maxwell Owin collide like two planets to create a new universe of sounds. Merging and melting into broken beat, house, soul, jazz and funk with the help of big droopy, dreamy aesthetics, Idiom is their opening statement and not likely to be their last. From the Nathan Haines style plucks and harmonics of "Minds Eye" to the piano-primed 23rd century garage of "Easy Now", the whole trip teeters between home immersion and dancefloor subversion with immense playability.

  2. Richard's People - "Yo Yo" (re edit) (2:48)
Review: It's landed! Two highly iconic and tricky-to-trace funk breaks from the 70s get the treatment from the mysterious new US series B Boy Funk Breaks. Blackrock's psychedelically twinged "Yeah Yeah" gets a slight shuffle and refocus while retaining the all the instrumental drama and swashbuckling drop that's led with JB-level bandleadership while the edit of Richard's People take us straight to church, front row centre. Again laced with another clean and killer break, this is powermove gold. Limited to 300 copies.

Review: Colonel Faat aka Rocky Dawuni is one of Ghana's few reggae artists to have made a name for themselves since the 90s. He is particularly hard to come by these days, but Austria's Agogo imprint clearly know how to get their links form around the globe, and this new tune is a peaceful ballad for purely positive vibes. "Balantije" is one of those tunes you can slap on in just about any scenario, spreading love and good will wherever and whenever, guided by a subtle ska off-beat; Mankoora's remix takes it to more danceable territories, adding in a layer of percussion and just the right amount of funk. Yes.

  1. Once I've Been There (extended Promo version) (5:50)
  2. Captain Connors (unreleased extended mix) (7:23)
Review: Norman Connors was a 'go to' producer in the 1970s and '80s for soul and jazz, while holding it down on an impressive array of solo albums. Connors is a drummer first and foremost, and across his rhythm-focussed recordings were the introduction of singers who went on to have their own individual careers such as Jean Carn, Phyllis Hyman and the exceptional Phillip Mitchel - who features on A side 'Once I've Been There'. Flipside track 'Captain Connors' comes as a 12" mix made in 1977 but never released before on vinyl! Previously, the title track was only ever on a promotional release, often changing hands at over 100 quid a time - demand is high on this special release on the original imprint, cop it while you can!

Review: Leroi's back! Well... He never went away. As a studiosmith and designer his fingerprints are all over many of Colemine's on-point curations, but now we're about to enjoy a whole new tonne of Conroy as he prepares to drop his debut album. These two heavyweight instrumentals set the scene perfectly; "Tiger Trot" looks east for melodic inspiration with a touch of New Orleans in the swampy sweaty delivery. "Enter" hits with more of a jazzier, freeform air as we spiral into trumpet dizziness into deep bluesy introspection and some damn fine breaks from fellow Colemine consistency Rob Houk. Only 300 copies pressed.

Review: The Brazil 45s / Mr Bongo outlet is back with its classic moves, coming through with some truly special soul blends out of the Brazilian golden era. Dalila and Neyde Alexandre feature in this latest 7", the former with 1968's "Canto Chorado", a slow-burning bubble of funky exotica - surely impossible to find in its original shade - and the latter with a funky little bomb from 1971 by the name of "Perplexidade" - surely the smoothest, sexiest soul number out this week! Lovely stuff.

Review: Hot remix action of Falty DL's recent Heaven Is For Quitters EP - the good (or even better!) news is that this is volume 1, so we can expect more of this gold in the near future. Much like his own tunes, The Cyclist and O'Flynn turn in two dusty, percussion-heavy dance experiments that blur the lines between bass and house, coming through with some lovely, late summer rays of warmth. On the flip, Lobster-boy Palms Trax rewires "Neeloon" into a sparse house banger with plenty of aqueous exploration in its underbelly, and Kaidi Tatham transforms "Drugs" into an magnificently off-kilter nu-jazz piece.

Review: Donnie Tempo has only appeared once previously as Knu Je', and that was way back in 2001. Now the alias is revived on Sound Reflection in a shimmering, twirling expression of broken beat and boogie sensibilities for those who like their beats soul n' sun drenched. It's actually his Quad IBB alias that serves up the "original mix" of "Vocoder So Sexy", and it's nothing short of stunning. The rich layers of vocals cavort with the expressive key changes and sharply angled beats, making for a truly striking cut that sounds equally fresh in its instrumental form on the B side.

Review: Pure Pleasure; never has a name been more apt. Two sides of glistening soul and funk Detroit 1980 style. With years on the live circuit throughout the 70s, this was the only 45" they ever cut by boy is it gem; "By My Side" is a powerful piece of soul enriched by warm production, big instrumentation and of course Barbara Love's gutsy, honest vocals. "Dancin' Prancin'" plays a cheeky counterpoint with fun-packed super-tight disco energy that delivers on its title's promise in any party situation. The pleasure is all ours.

Review: Surprise: Detroit five-piece Will Sessions warm us up for their next album with two classics from their elusive 2010 jazz fusion homage Kindred. The title track builds on their more cosmic work with frantic guitar flashes and horn cries over a languid moonlit bed creating sudden moments of tension, release. "Polyester People" flips the energy as the troupe tightly roll out a firing jazz funk riff that's so tightly locked the delicious keys can do as they please... And often do. Bring on the new album.

Here, the track gets reissued as part of Mr Bongo's brilliant Brazil 45s series, alongside his lesser-known - but no less impressive - cover of Edu Lobo's "Ponteio".

Review: Previously available on Art Yard as a separate series of 10"s, The Lost Arkestra Series returns on a double-packed release for all those that missed it the first time around - or simply for the endless nut job collectors who need their second edition. 1983's live version of "Along Came Ra" is from a gig in Paris, and this particular version is the one real killer that's been missing from our charts - all that percussive glory would go down a storm in just about any DJ set, that's for sure; On the flip you have two minimal (synth) cuts that were from the original tapes of Disco 3000...we're sure you understand just how special this is now. The second disc, which is the original volume 2, sees a series of recordings from the 1970s series of Saturn LPs, which feature Sun Ra's much deeper, jazzier personality. A magical ride from start to finish. Cop it before it's too late.

Review: Following the debut album Blackism earlier this year, Acid jazz / Wag club fusioneer Lascelle Lascelles continues to build on his latest explorative endeavour; Vibration Black Finger, a band driven by the ideals of post punk and spiritual jazz. Instantly plugging us in with the raffish loose-limbed electroid funk of "Get Up And Do It", Lascelles then blindsides us with a rainbow of elements ranging from the deep emotional soul of Maggie Nicols on "Got To Believe" and one of the most spiritual takes on "Amazing Grace" we've ever heard. Awash with the smoky sax, shimmering Rhodes and delicate horn work, the vibrations run deeper than ever.

Review: Former Slum Village and Platinum Pied Piper beat maker Waajeed has thrown himself into soulful, synth-laden deep house production of late, primarily by making his presence felt on cuts by fellow Detroit legend Theo Parrish. Here he strikes out on his own with a brilliantly colourful, imaginative and on-point EP of solo productions. There's much to admire throughout, from the looked vibraphone melodies, darting brass and undulating broken house rhythms of "Shango", to the Dego and Kaidi Tatham style, jazz-funk influenced electro smoothness of "Better Late Than Never". Opener "Winston's Midnight Disco", where hushed synth-disco samples are wrapped into alien synth lines and elastic bass, is also rather fine.

Review: Tony Allen is on record as saying that The Source, his first album on iconic jazz label Blue Note, is the best recording he's made. Given his length of service and vast discography, that's a bold claim. Certainly, it's a fine album, with the legendary drummer and his selected musicians - mostly jazz players from Paris, plus a Cameroonian guitarist and previous Allen collaborator Damon Albarn on one cut - effortlessly blur the boundaries between Afrobeat and the kind of jazz pioneered by Allen's percussion heroes Art Blakey and Max Roach. It's a brilliant hybrid that fits Allen's unique style of drumming like a glove, and there's no doubt that the former Fela Kuti sticks-man is the real star of the show.

Review: On Where The Gods Are In Peace, their first album for five years, long-serving NYC Afrobeat revivalists Antibalas return to Daptone with fellow veterans Zapa Mama in tow. The all-female Belgian combo provides vocals on album centrepiece "Tombstown", a suite of track in three distinctive "Movements". All three parts, which are drenched in reverb and delay and operate at a far slower tempo than much of Antibalas's output, are decidedly cosmic in tone, with greater percussive intricacy, subtle Afro-jazz influences and an impressive variety of instrumental solos. Of course, it wouldn't be an Antibalas album without a rousing dancefloor epic or two, and happily both the Fela Kuti style "Gold Rush" and funk-fuelled "Hook & Crook" tick that particular box.

Review: Martin Perna's infamous Antibalas crew, or 'bulletproof' as we like to call them, have been one of the most consistent sources of quality afrobeat since the late 90s, first coming through on the then fledgling Ninja Tune, out of the UK. Over the last five years, Brooklyn's ever-impressive Daptone Records have snapped them up, with this new album, Where The Gods Are In Peace, being the group's second LP for the afro powerhouse label. "Gold Rush" opens with a frenetic, supremely funky ode to Fela, all nervous and cosmic, followed by the comparatively deeper and more laid-back groove of "Hook & Crook". "Tombstone", on the B-side, receives three mixes, each of them featuring Zap Mama on the vocals - the deepest shade of afrobeat you'll find out here. Antibalas gives us hope that new music can be just as powerful as the original material from the 70s. 10/10.

Review: Favorite Records take us direct to the source: a disco gem of holy grail proportions, Sunshine is Byron's only album, OG copies go for over L500 and it's chock-a-block with dancefloor gold. From the in-your-face physicality of "Galaxy" or the planet-kicking line dance feels of "Space Cowboy" by way of the ultimate 80s sleaze synth boogie of "Heart To Heart Sensation", this was Byron in his prime with so much promise and latent funk, and led to one of disco's ultimate bombs "Dance To The Music". Essential.

Review: Niger's Mdou Moctar is finally back on Sahel Sounds with his fifth LP for Christopher Kirkley's Portland-based powerhouse. Moctar is known as a Tuareg, or rather "a group of nomadic pastoralist peoples inhabitants of the Saharan interior of North Africa in Algeria, Burkina Faso, Libya, Mali and Niger", meaning that this music has no one face or province. It is the expression of different socialites and points of view. If you're like us, that alone is enough to buy on sight. Thankfully, the music really is a wonderful experience that spans from the guitar-led solos of Moctar to shadowy swarms of organic percussion. This is music of the world, for the world. Do not miss it.

Review: Previously a Record Store Day special, Colemine elevate this epic 45" compendium to permanent status. 22 tracks heavy, the double 12" whammy unites some of Colemine's finest curations over the years into one perfect collection. From the rare shimmering guitars and woozy horns of The Rugged Nuggets to Colemine debuts such as the sweaty afrofunk boogaloo fusion of Ikebe Shakedown's 2009 breakthrough "Hard Stepping" and the garage funk fizz of Alan Evans Trio's 2012 "Drop Hop" via the beautiful "Smile" from Duran Jones & The Indications' debut album last year, no other album represents the breadth, warmth and vitality of Colemine quite as succinctly as this collection. Slab it up.
