  1. Super Black (2:59)
  2. Is It Really That Bad (2:34)
Review: Originally out in a distant but very relatable 1971, what we have here is perhaps one of the rarest funk 7"s that has ever graced our charts. No lies, no exaggerations. This two-track beauty by Everyday People, out through the timeless Forte label way back when, has been the dream of many a digger, and it's kind of surprising that we're sat here writing this review while the record is still in stock. "Super Black" is a monstrously rolling funk gem that's adaptable to any sort of room or dancefloor, backed by those majestic vocals, and "Is It Really That Bad" acts as the neat instrumental to top it all off. We know the A-side has been remastered from the original tapes, while the B-side might be a direct lift from one of the few original copies in existence. Either way, you ain't gonna find it anywhere else.

Funk Weapon (white vinyl 7" limited to 150 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: NYC 002. Rel: 29 May 17
  1. Quadrant 77 - "Funk Weapon" (feat Mano Reza) (4:49)
  2. Kozmik Funk - "Don't Funk Wid Us" (feat E live) (3:37)
Review: The many faces and fusions of James Reeno continue as NYC drop another white hot, super-limited 45". Concentrated funk is main message across both sides as James switches persona and hooks up with inspiring compadres along the way. "Funk Weapon" lives up to its name as Reeno's bubbling bass zips and zaps beneath some salubrious guitar work from Mano Reza. "Don't Funk Wid Us" sees him donning a trippier, more introspective funk as Kozmik Funk. Loaded with Oakland's finest E.Live on the pads and peppered with subtle talkbox tones, the message is clear: it's not a good idea to funk with these cats. Essential.

  2. I Forgot To Say (4:27)
Review: Stone cold classic from 1977. Zebra's self-released (and only) single has had an interesting trip in the last 15 years. First chanced upon by Ian Wright, then a hot target on the collector's merry-go-round, then a big hit for Jazzman and now, 10 years later, a potential smasher for Jazzman alumni Fryer and his consistently ace AOTN imprint. In case you don't know it, "Simple Song" is a slapping, frenzied funk groove while "I Forgot To Say" plays consummate counterpoint with a blissful honeyed ballad. It's worth jumping on this while you can...

Review: Over a career that spanned three decades, Fruko E Sus Tesos became one of the most successful salsa outfits worldwide. When they recorded and released debut album Tesura in 1970, though, they were barely known outside of their native Colombia. The album has been hard to find for years, so this officially licensed reissue is something of a saviour for those DJs and collectors who dig authentic South American salsa. Highlights include the jaunty title track, whose muted trumpet lines wrap themselves around bubbly piano lines and fluid percussion, the loose, jazz-influenced punch of "Improvisando" and the cheery dancefloor sunshine of "Materilerileron".

Review: Crate-digging reissue specialists Africa Seven has decided to flip the script on this fantastic album, asking a range of contemporary producers to "re-imagine" a string of rare soul, funk, Afrobeat and disco jams. Thrillingly for those who remember the original West London broken beat scene, the comp contains some killer "bruk" revisions - not least Silkie's brilliantly fluid and groovy take on Ekambi Brillant's "Soul Castle" and EVM's rolling, Bugz in the Attic style revision of M'Bamina's "Mosi Zole". Elsewhere, Appleblim delivers a typically fuzzy and bass heavy rework of Sorry Bamba, Dj Food chops up Sookie's organ-laden funk slammer "Rhythm on Rhythm" an IDM heroes Plaid join the dots between vintage African jazz and woozy electronica. In a word: superb.
