  2. Talk Da Shit (3:50)
  3. Deaf Ears (instrumental dub) (6:40)
Review: Afrobeat alert right here, for even the most cynical of Fela believers - no lie! Trombonist Toli Nameless leads this magnificent EP, out through the fledgling Kooyman Records, in what is actually a sort of reissue... or rather an unearthing of some pretty special material that was recorded in the NYC area around about 2003. In what was a series of infamous live performances back then, these recordings has gained fame in the underground name and so this must be a rather special event for anyone whose been longing for their mystical charm until now. "See Line" is the most energetic of the trio, all guns blazing on the percussion front and vocal voodoo, while "Talk Da Shit" provides your more typical Afro funk, except that its way sexier thanks to Toli's brass vibes. The instrumental dub to "Def Ears", however, is the more special of the three and the one to bring out that lovely, heartical bounce that we all yearn for. A magnificent EP. Highly recommended!

Cat: BSTX 015. Rel: 14 Aug 17
  1. Take Time (vocal) (4:40)
  2. Take Time (extended) (6:14)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Once more scouring the annals of disco history for the hottest jams, Best look beyond Italy and snap up this much-vaunted slice of American funk from 1982. While second hand prices can get out of control, it's not hard to hear why this glittering prize from Jagg would be so coveted - it's got everything. Jazz-leaning slap bass, mean synthesizer chops and soaring vocals - "Take Time" is prime to set the party off, and no longer is it the preserve of wealthy collectors. Originally a single-sided affair, Best have done the right thing and filled the B-side up with an extended version to let that groove roll on even longer.

  2. Why Can't We Live Together (3:33)
Review: Timmy Thomas, sometimes known as The Magician, frequently regarded as one of the most sampled men beyond the Brown franchise, he's been referenced by everyone from Drake to Dilla to MC Hammer. Here we find two of his most well known cuts, both taken from his 1972 album, Why Can't We Live Together. There's a wry cosmic sheen weaving and shimmering in the background of the soaking wet Afrofunk groove of "Africano" while the keys of "Why Can't We Live Together" instantly hit with a soul you've heard, felt and loved in so many contexts. Certified classic.

Review: Evo and Soulstice's brand new label Adventures In Paradise launches with the sweet funk grandeur you'd expect. J Sole takes us many feet high and rising with a sermon from the book of Troubleman, warming our souls and saving our soles with every precision tweaked modification. Flip to the B for longstanding groove bastion, editor and all-round G J Boogie. Here altitude is maintained by Byrd power as another stone cold boogie funk classic is give the perfect amount of dancefloor oomph. Happy landings.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: With the Grupo Almendra album fresh out of the gates, Italian label Best Records jump right back in with a crucial slice of disco funk from noted arranger, producer and karate expert Pino Presti. "You Know The Way" is a slinky party starter with on-point slap bass, lively brass and sumptuous Philly strings of the highest order. As if the original wasn't funky enough, the B-side features a disco remix from dearly departed New York disco legend Tee Scott, who subtly buffs up the dancefloor potential of the track to devastating effect.

Review: Having come to the fore with a pair of boogie slammers on the Cosmic Chronic label, Mickey De Grand IV's Psychic Mirrors outfit ascend to parent operation People's Potential Unlimited with the excellent Charlene. Allegedly recorded with the help of a ten piece live band, both the title track and "Midnight Mirrors" are evocative of the sort of modern lo-fi funk that PPU corners the market in these days. Bringing the Miami heat, "Charlene" is a veritable dancefloor bomb, with a rugged boogie bassline the sort of flirtatious element that hips can't say no to. B Side cut "Midnight Mirrors" is more of a late night number with some exquisite synth work. Props to PPU!

  1. Love Stormy Weather (4:09)
  2. Crying For Your Love (4:02)
Review: Soul collectors have long considered Melvin Brown and James Matthews' "Love Stormy Weather" to be a slept-on classic. Initially released (and largely ignored) in 1976, it sits somewhere between the acoustic soul of Terry Callier, the dewy-eyed goodness of Rotary Connection, and the sumptuous jazz-funk that was all the rage in the late 1970s. Don't take our word for it, though: check out the sound clips for yourself. On the flipside you'll find a previously unheard gem from the duo: the impassioned, tear-jerking torch song "Crying For Your Love". Naturally it's a little fuzzy round the edges (the masters were probably sat in someone's loft for 30-odd years), but still sounds powerful and emotional.

Review: Jaded ex-rapper, author and terminal realist J-Zone unleashes his new funk project The Zone Identity where more of his fizzy, frazzled outsider beats are melted down with no care for convention, or crossover. Rawness in every direction; "Funk I Tus" hits and tickles like a Booker T demo (complete with some ace percussion rolls) while "Let The Music Take Your Mind" steps back on the easy beat with more emphasis on freeform synth blasts. Undiluted funk in its purist form; get in the zone today.

Review: Pure brass bedlam from the long-standing, Grammy-winning, heavy-hitting Rebirth Brass Band: "I Like It Like That" and "Do It Again" are taken from the band's hugely successful Rebirth Of New Orleans album and have never seen the light of 45" before... Until now. The former is hotter than a Mardi in July with a party-rearing hook you'll be humming into the 20s. The latter takes more street corner momentum as the band put down their horns and chant like their lives depends on it. It doesn't get more powerful than this. Super limited too - only 500 copies to be pressed.

  5. Nightflare (Appleblim remix) (5:52)
Review: Like many producers whose careers began during the "post dubstep" era, Adam "Arkist" Gazia has spent much of his career sidestepping easy categorization. Even so, few would have expected his latest EP - the brilliantly titled Astrocat - to be a colourful, synth-heavy homage to the P-Funk era. Opener "Small Talk", featuring Mr Woodnote rocking the talkbox, is so authentic-sounding that it could be a long lost Funkadelic recording. The same could be said of "Astrocat", whose fuzzy synths, talkbox vocals and stuttering machine drums would make Roger Troutman purr. Also worth a mention are the slap bass-propelled boogie funk of "Only" and "Nightflare", a sweet chunk of laidback, instrumental electrofunk. Appleblim's bonus remix of the latter - dubby, intergalactic, spacey and melodious, is also superb.

Review: New Orleans nine-piece, The Hot 8 Brass Band, return to their breakthrough track. Arguably one of the best Marvin Gaye covers in the history of versions, Tru Thoughts have commissioned a brace of contemporisations and pressed them limited edition gold vinyl: J Felix adds a light-footed P-funk bedrock, Ibibio Sound Machine add a dubby weight to the drums, light synths and a cheeky guitar lick, Maddslinky lays down a straight up house strut, Werkha gets his jazzy shuffle on while Jonny Faith twists up a little Jamaican flavour with a dancehall beat and light skanks. Sexual.

Review: If this fine 7" is anything to go by, the crate digging and detective skills of Athens of the North founder Euan Fryer are as sharp as ever. The two tracks featured here originally appeared on a private press single that currently changes hands for large sums online. Fryer manager to track down the original writer/producer, Chicago-based George Riviera, who not only have his blessing to the reissue, but also sent over the master tapes. Stylistically, A-side "The Time is Right" sits somewhere between Latin soul, jazz-funk and sumptuous downtempo disco, with blue-eyed soul vocals and subtle vibraphone solos rising above superb had percussion. Fipside "Feelin' Funky" is a more up-tempo affair: an undulating chunk of jazz-funk/disco fusion laden with neat musical touches.

  2. Disco Baby (Floating Points & Red Greg edit) (3:55)
Review: If online chatter is to be believed, this tasty 7" from Floating Points' Melodies label is one of the most keenly anticipated disco releases of the year. For starters, the A-side boasts an obscure (but in demand) solo production from Manhattan Transfer keyboardist Yaron Gershovsky. "Disco Baby" is a prime chunk of jaunty, jazz-funk influenced disco-funk, the keyboardist's own jammed-out riffs and solos taking pride of place in the mix alongside punchy horns and a lolloping groove. Arguably even better, though, is Floating Points and Red Greg's flipside re-edit, which plays around with the original version's all-too-short drum break before letting the synths, keys and horns really sparkle.

Review: New kids on the reissue block, New Zealand's Strangelove Music are off to a flying start with this beautiful 1983 art pop record from subversive chanteuse Lena D'Agua. "Jardim Zoologico" fuses electro boogie with Afrofunk with healthy measures of cosmic polish while "Tao" is a straight up Balearic gem that sparkles with sentiment and horizontal soul. Only ever released on Portuguese label Valentim De Carvalho, this reissue is over 30 years overdue.

  1. Dynasty - "Adventures In The Land Of Music" (edit) (4:26)
  2. Cesar Mariano & CIA - "Metropole" (edit) (4:05)
Review: Detroit label Galaxy Sound Co. has been responsible for some killer re-edits over the last couple of years. The genius of their releases, which are mostly tidy 7" singles like this one, is their inspired choice of source material and the deft touch of their scalpel-wielding editors. This time round, the label's anonymous editors breathe new life into tracks from Solar regulars Dynasty and obscure Brazilian disco-funk outfit Cesar Mariana & Cia. It's the version of the latter's "Metropole" - a kind of heavy funk take on the steamy jazz-funk of Azymuth - that shines brightest here, though the A-side rearrangement of soft-focus 1980 disco-soul number "Adventures in Music" - all impassioned vocals, punchy horn lines and warm synths - is also rather good.

Review: Put your hands together... Serial editor Akshin Alizadeh takes Marlena Shaw's iconic heavily-referenced sample (from the live recording of "Woman Of The Ghetto") and lays it softly over a breath-taking lounge-lurking jazz funk groove. All lavish strings, hazy horns, wandering keys and lazy smoky beats, think Nightmares On Wax and you're on the right Balearic boulevard. Get together.

Last pressed in 1973, this was the Michigan funk troupe's only 45" and has been known to pass hands for several hundred in the last few years. Big breezy soul with jazz-tinged sweeping backing harmonies and slick guitar work from the band's lynchpin Michael Lewis, it's criminal that this was the band's only recording.

Review: For their latest deep dive into the world of obscure funk, Vienna's Record Shack has decided to reissue two hard-to-find gems from the Just Brothers and Apollo Studio Band. The former's "Honey" was recorded in the 1970s but first released in 2001. Full of their trademark surf style guitars, stomping Northern Soul style beats and dreamy, psychedelic era vocals, it remains one of the outfit's greatest tracks. On the reverse you'll find the thrillingly fuzzy "Honky Tonk Woman (Instrumental)" by the Apollo Studio Band. We found next to no information about the outfit online, suggesting the track was taken from a lauded, private press release. Either way, it's a prime chunk of Northern Soul style instrumental fuzziness that's worth the admission price alone.

Review: Bristol outfit the Allergies has enjoyed a hugely successful year so far, releasing a string of killer funk and soul sevens on Jalepeno Records. Astonishingly, "Entitled To That" could be their biggest single yet. Certainly, the title track is superb; a revivalist Northern Soul style stomper full of hazy horns, fuzzy guitars, sweaty drums and the kind of strong, empowered vocal that recalls some of soul music's greatest female singers. Wisely, there's a slightly more laidback feel about flipside "Get Down on You", where crunchy Clavinet lines wrap themselves around a snappy funk breakbeat. It's a fine tune, of course, but pales in comparison to the killer A-side. Regardless, this should be an essential purchase for funk DJs.

Smooth, soulful and arranged with such style, every element of Herbie's essential ingredients is brought to the fore in its own time with its own space. "Stars In Your Eyes" swoons with a soulful ballad feel while "Saturday Night" pumps and jumps with party-pulling allure. Simply essential.

Taking it back to 1989, Ultimate Force's "I'm Not Playing" catches a young Diamond D in full flow over a looped blues lick. Famed for its appearance on Shadow & Cut Chemist's "Brainfreeze" mix, the original 45 will set you back a hefty sum. Moreover, the imprint has called upon the services of Capriccio, Magnant & Associates, a collective of highly experiences funk and soul musicians from America's Bay Area who have come through with 2 kick-ass versions of "Local Government Victory", the sort of funky, wayward groove that'll get the whole place nodding their heads by the second roll of the chorus. Review: Damn fine UK funk of the rawest, freshest order, rising London troupe King Rooster lay down two scorching and authentic jams. "Gator Jerky" is full of Louisianan flavour and meat. Swampy, driving, and relentless, it's a full-on instrumental gumbo. Vocalist Florelie Escano joins the party for the equally forthright and sweaty "Ain't Got Time For That". Three minute power punches with that serious live feel to the recordings, King Rooster are in this for the long run.
