  1. You Win Some, You Lose Some (part 1) (3:21)
  2. You Win Some, You Lose Some (part 2) (3:03)
Review: Washington D.C-based Jim Bennett is probably known for his numerous contributions to the "go-go" sound during the early-to-mid 1980s. Before that, he was a mainstay of the D.C funk scene, right at the moment when "go-go" was beginning to become a fully codified style of its' own. "You Win Some You Lose Some" was recorded in 1981, and sounds like it was inspired, in part, by "E Flat Boogie", a 1980 proto-go-go funk jam from future scene legends Trouble (later known as Trouble Funk). The A-side "Part 1", which boasts chanted vocals, rubbery slap bass from Bennett and some seriously punchy horn work, is particularly potent. Both sides sound like a party in the studio that we're eavesdropping on, such is their excitable vibrancy.

  2. The Armada Orchestra - "For The Love Of Money" (Danny Krivit edit) (5:47)
Review: Ten years deep and these edit still pop... Krivit takes everything that rocks and pops on Orgone's cover of The Beginning Of The End's seminal "Funky Nassau", extends it, applies the breaks and turns it inside out. It genuinely can't fail. The very same can be said for his take on Armada Orchestra's cover of Gamble & Huff's O'Jays smash "For The Love Of Money". Focusing in on the instrumentation and slinkiness of the groove, Krivit is a true edit master.

  1. The Sensational Disciples - "My Own Way" (2:24)
  2. Elder William Smith - "His Voice" (3:02)
Review: The reverend of many aliases, Kris Holmes returns with two more woozy slabs of raw funk. Following "Bumps In The Road" earlier this year, both "My Own Way" and "His Voice" are captured with full feeling and atmosphere from the room with warm lo-fi brilliance. The former goes for more of a straight-soul feel while the latter is gutsy piece of gospel funk that will could convert the baddest sinner in seconds. Lord have mercy.

  2. Tight Situation (part 2) (3:22)
Review: More raw funk genius from Kris Holmes: "Tight Situation" is a tight Hammond and guitar groove with just a mild drum break stroking the background to keep the time. Holmes' Yates persona takes over the A with demonstrative preaching power while the instrumental on the B gives you more than enough time to really lose yourself in the woozy washes of organ and endless bendy twangs. Praise worthy.

Review: With the Grupo Almendra album fresh out of the gates, Italian label Best Records jump right back in with a crucial slice of disco funk from noted arranger, producer and karate expert Pino Presti. "You Know The Way" is a slinky party starter with on-point slap bass, lively brass and sumptuous Philly strings of the highest order. As if the original wasn't funky enough, the B-side features a disco remix from dearly departed New York disco legend Tee Scott, who subtly buffs up the dancefloor potential of the track to devastating effect.

  1. I've Learned My Lesson (2:55)
  2. Don't Do What I Do (2:23)
Review: Nebraska-raised, California-based soul man Vernon Garrett was at the peak of his powers when "I've Learned My Lesson" was first released back in 1974. He'd scored a number of dancefloor hits at the tail end of the '60s via 7" singles on such labels as Kent and Venture Records, and by '74 was happily releasing material on the Watts U.S.A imprint he'd established as a vehicle for his own work. "I've Learned My Lesson" is arguably Garrett's strongest song of the period - a James Brown style heavy funk workout full of rousing horns, blistering drum breaks, jammed-out organ lines, gospel style backing vocals and, of course, his own scorching lead vocal. Since original copies are pretty hard to find these days, this reissue is more than welcome.

  1. Horizon's Theme (Pt 1) (3:26)
  2. Horizon's Theme (Pt 2) (2:49)
Review: Prior to this year, funk connoisseurs and collectors have known only one record from the 70s Bay Area funk troupe Brass Horizon. That was "We Just Want To Play" and it's been known to go over $1500 in the past. 39 years after its release Super Disco Edits have incredibly unearthed an unreleased gem! So large it takes over both sides, "Horizon's Theme" is a groove heavy instrumental jammed with that classic laid back Berkley vibe where all players get a chance to shine. Part one is all about the organs while part two lets the horns tear the groove a new one. What a find.

You (7")
Cat: ATH 039. Rel: 28 Nov 16
  1. You (4:46)
  2. Space V (4:18)
Review: Christopher Sprains and The Strange Band recorded a whole heap of material in a hazy, drug-fuelled 19178, but their - surprisingly - never gained enough traction with the NYC disco crowd. Perhaps this work was too ahead of its time and, while it does share some qualities with the music of Rick James, it contains something dark, sexy, a little bit twisted and, of course, strange. The lead track "You" is a synth-heavy, electrifying boogie cut with a rugged percussion swing and an air of post-punk to its mix down, not to mention those utterly freaky vocals; our favourite, though, is actually "Space V", an insanely nutty electro cut that would have undoubtedly been on The Electrifying Mojo's playlist should it have landed on his lap. Totally recommended...

  2. I Want My Candy Girl Back (3:45)
Review: This fine, party-starting 7" single from Jorun Bombay looks to the Jackson 5 for inspiration. A-side "It's Still Great To Be Here" is a tasteful remix of the Jackson family disco-pop track of the same name, featuring some new musical elements supplied by conga player Chris Cookson and keyboardist Forrest Dank. On the flip, Bombay delivers a version of New Edition's "Candy Girl", replacing the original's electrofunk backing track with the Jackson 5's "ABC" (which, of course, was famously sampled on the New Edition track). It's a brilliant idea, superbly executed, and should get a great response when played to packed dancefloors.

Review: The final single to be taken from Moneyshot and Rackabeat's hugely successful debut album As We Do Our Thing, "You Wouldn't know" and "Special People" close the LP cycle with fitting party spirit. The former is a dense weave of horn samples and well-known vocal hooks over some deliciously swashbuckling beats while the latter is a sweatier funk groove that's reminiscent of the classier end of big beat's golden era but with more original funk spirit. Rumour has it they're already deep into their second album...

  1. Looking Up To You (3:58)
  2. (Do You Really Love Me) Tell Me Love (3:58)
Review: With roots as a backing singer for Stevie Wonder, Wycoff went on to become a soul ambassador throughout the early 80s. This 1982 reissue is one of the best examples of his silky, heartfelt delivery... "Looking Up To You" is a dynamic love song where traces of big 70s production build and build throughout. "(Do You Really Love Me) Tell Me Love", meanwhile, was only ever released as a B-side. Its 80s production counter the dramatics of the A-side with cool synthetic perfection. Reissues don't get much broader in production or sweeter in sound than this.

Review: DJ Apt-One dons his hairiest mane for more roaring Lion edits. And this time he's brought company. Fresh from collaborating with Soul Clap, here we find him in fine funk fettle with two more precision dug obscurities: "Keep On Hangin' On" is classic loopy filtered disco house finesse while "Finally" takes us deep into electro boogie heaven. Supamomo Jay Airiness takes the B for two equally XL party-sized joints: "Funky Situation" is a total carnival of percussion and slapbass magic while "Two Of Us" is all about the bumper-busting disco funk. Divine.

Review: Fresh from the mind of Renegades Of Jazz, Dem Juju Poets serve a bewitching brew: sharp with staccato Latin elements but rich, hazy and mystical with African and Cuban elements, it's an alluring fusion across both sides; "Voodoo Jazz" lives up to its name with lolloping double bass bassline, warm horns and insistent rhythmic vocal. "Watusi Fever" sidesteps to the left with a more complex time signature, layers of subtle percussive texture and flutes that pepper with funk. Get on this.

Review: The Soul Motivators made quite an impact with their Do Right! Music released 2013 debut album, Free To Believe. Somewhat surprisingly, Tito's Revenge marks their first appearance on wax since. The title track is, predictably, something of a horn-heavy gem. It effortlessly joins the dots between fuzzy early '70s funk, Hammond-heavy grooves, and the kind of dusty Afro-funk that's all the rage right now. The Afro-funk influence is even stronger on similarly killer flipside "Aftermath". While sadly not a funk cover of the Nightmares on Wax rave classic of the same name (now that would have been something), it nevertheless packs a serious punch - thanks, in no small part, to a series of sparring horn solos.

  1. Breakplus - "Le Train Enflamme" (7:56)
  2. Mr Beatnick - "Achilles Heel" (5:30)
Review: Mr Beatnick's Mythstery label returns with 002 after an excellent first outing from Breakplus, whose 12" was vey much to our desire when it dropped late last year. The two actually go head-to-head on this 12" and, much like the twisted disco of artists like Black Devil Disco Club, this is some straight-up sexy gear, disjointed and unadulterated for maximum pleasure. Breakplus' weirdo boogie on "Le Train Inflamme" is our kinda joint, the sort of fuming, acid-laced glitz that'll appeal to the disco-heads and house-nerds alike; Mr Beatnick's "Achilles Heel" is just as eerie and roughed-up, but the vibe on here is darker, moodier, and drenched in a deep electronic edge. Very highly recommended.

  1. Radio Trip - "Computer Singing" (Markey Funk Alfomega remix) (4:21)
  2. Left - "Left" (Markey Funk Haunted remix) (4:25)
Review: The Radio Trip duo are not exactly shy to new collaborations, so this new co-appearance alongside Left isn't exactly out of the ordinary for them. The artists touch down on the up-and-coming Delights label and, while there is much of their style in these two tracks, they act merely as the original artists. By that, we mean that they receive the remix duty by a another fine duet: Radio Trip's break-heavy "Computer Singing" is given the run-around with Markey Funk Alfomega's remix, and the result is that we have a raw, broken beat groove filled with oddball sonics circling in its upper end; Left's "Left" abstraction is also remixed by Mark Funk (Haunted), and we just love this track - it's as if jungle and post-punk meet for one brief, sublime moment of surrealism. Recommended and tipped!!

  3. Kunming Beats (1:48)
Review: The latest artist to join Dinked's roster of soul and funk obsessives is DJ D.S.K, a China-based Brit who grew up cutting and scratching hip-hop and old funk breaks. The three tracks showcased here seem to be built around samples from tasty old funk bombs, from cut-up and rearranged breaks, to punchy horn lines and low-slung basslines. Lead cut "Lamine" is particularly potent, featuring as it does DJ-friendly drum breaks, jangling soul guitars, rubbery bass and a floor-friendly rhythm track. Flip for the looser, electric piano-heavy dancefloor strut of "Police Woman", and the dusty, head-nodding, trumpet-laden hip-hop bounce of "Kumming Beats" (and, yes, it's a sneaky cut-up of an old James Brown tune).

Review: Rare Brazil have brought us some brilliant bossanova compilations (with some steamy cover art!) over the last twenty odd years and can claim to be a definite authority on obscure Brazilian music: no argument there! Now they delve into much needed re-issues with Toque De Cuica which features two obscure gems, for the heads. First up the legendary Brazilian jazz drummer Airto Moreira serves up the feelgood disco vibes of "Toque De Cuica", while on the flip there's Erlon Chaves E Sua Banda Venemo with the sultry Latin soul-funk of "Cosa Nostra" coming off like a South American James Brown and band: you've got to hear this.

Now loading up their second funk 45 bullet, it's likely to be just as successful... Big Hammond-led funk all the way, "I Feel Free" has the frenzy of The Meters but the fire of the Mohawkes while "Growler" does anything but growl - swinging with a fizzy lead line and heavy string strums, there's a train-like momentum that refuses to quit until the very last break. Heavenly.

Review: For those of a certain age, Gwen McRae's "All This Love That I'm Givin" will always evoke memories of Cassius' French Touch classic "Feeling For You", which sampled it heavily. It remains a killer record in its' own right, though, as this timely reissue proves. Originally released in 1979, it sees McRae at her powerful best, delivering a potent message to an errant lover over a killer, low-slung disco-funk groove. It's one of the tracks that should really be in any discerning funk, soul or disco DJ's collection. Flip for original B-side "Maybe I'll Find Somebody New", a breezier chunk of laidback soul with a slightly Southern lilt. It's good, but pales into insignificance compared to the brilliant 'A' side.

"Time To Breathe" rolls its funky bass over some magnificent soul vocals, and the tune takes us into the light, welcoming in the new year and the warmer months ahead thanks to a fun, upbeat little groove. "Long Gone", on the other hand, is the more seductive of the two; a sleek, pensive and seductive punch of melodies that is easily playable on repeat for a couple of days. Top stuff, and hell-a limited!

Review: 1971's Maggot Brain is and always will be a timeless piece of work, not only because it was fundamental in instilling the funk sound of the following decade, but also because it went much deeper than many of the band's other albums; we consider it to be the group's finest work, spanning psychedelic rock and soul like no other music of its time. Led by the incorrigible George Clinton, the Parliament sister band were capable of turning even the straightest of styles into something continuously provocative; the lead track "Maggot Brain" is a blissful assortment of Hendrix-style riffing and raw electronic manipulation and, while the rest of the album heads down comparatively straighter genre types, the band always retain their inimitable freakiness, a distorted glow of organs, fuzzed-out guitars, and gospel choirs. A classic of the highest order, and an album which should reside in any serious record collection.
