Review: Yes, yes, yes! People's Potential Unlimited come through with a timely new white label edition of Minority Band's Tasty Tune 12" which was one of the very first releases from the DC archivalists back in 2009!! Both tracks on this 12" originate from the sole record Jersey Shore act Minority Band released at the time they were active, the Journey To The Shore LP issued on local New Jersey label JSR Records back in 1980. It goes without saying finding that LP is akin to stumbling upon gold dust, so let's make do with this 12" which PPU state features two of the best cuts. Prime Jersey Shore boogie.

  3. Takin' You Higher (Just Like Climbing A Ladder)
  4. Loneliness
Review: Rare funk and soul connoisseurs Athens Of The North uncover four gems from one of the most interesting men in funk history. The man behind "Funky Nassau", Raphael Munnings really should have had a much bigger career than he did. Fortunately AOTN have recovered these four near-misses to ensure they're big hits for us... From the warm horns and Bahaman lilt of "Opportunity Knocking" to the organ and guitar heavy "Sleep On, Dream On" (think Booker T meets Hendrix) via the Gaye-style funk soul vibrancy of "Takin You Higher" this is a very special selection that pays respect to an unsung hero.

Review: Evans Pyramid material has been the foundations of the Cultures Of Soul imprint. The US-based boogie reissue label has put out nothing but gold over the years, but this has surely been th best gear on the label, and although both "Never Gonna Leave You" and "The Dip Drop" have been released before, this much needed repress is always welcome on our shelves. The former is a soft, hazy disco tune, but the real stunner is the latter thanks to its utterly addictive bassline and instantly recognizable vocals softly shouting "uh uh". Masterful.

  6. Notturno Distopico (2:11)
Review: Periplo marks the solo debut of Early Sounds Recordings co-founder Pellegrino S. Snichelotto, following occasional contributions to other material from the label's extended family of artists. Interestingly, the six-track set shares some stylistic similarities with friends' Nu Guinea's Tony Allen Experiments mini-album, chiefly the producer's delay and reverb-laden fusion of live instruments and vintage analogue hardware. Stylistically, most of the tracks sit somewhere between jazz-funk, cosmic funk, and the kind of melodious Afro-Cosmic fare that was once a staple of Northern Italy's eccentric club scene. There's plenty of hazy musical humidity to enoy, too, with the impeccable "Ad Libitum" standing out.

  1. We Want To Parrty Parrty Parrty (3:03)
  2. You Can't Beat Two People In Love (3:23)
Review: The closing salvo of premium funk from Lyn's seminal, historical Think album, both "We Want To Party Party Party" and "You Can't Beat Two People In Love" are stamped with James Brown's magic. The former lives up to its (thrice) with street hollers and a relaxed but super-tight horn-led groove. The latter throws back to JB's earlier soul creations with rich yearning emotion in the vocals and deep blues in the groove. Two fine reminders that Lyn gave the world much more than one of the most famous breaks.

Review: It's been a few years since New Zealand soul spaceman pecked our decks on the cheek but he's back and he's packing kindred company Zackey Force Funk for a more angular, woozy cosmic funk message than before. "Space Bitch" tells a tale all self-respecting intergalactic pimp can relate to as it lollops along over loose drums, a grumpy bassline and hazy chords. "Stimulant" is a much drowsier, somnambulant affair with its warped electro-at-half-speed tones and eerie whispers and whistles. Barbed, far-out but ultimately beautiful.

Review: More Eddie Bo material in straight repress format from the Bo Sound vaults! It's another scorcher from 1970 right here, except that Eddie is joined by The Soul Finders across two parts of the majestic "We're Doing It (Thang)". The first cut is funky, laid-back and complete with a rolling guitar riff; the second joint sparks to life after a sublime entrance of broken percussion to form a deep and vibrant funk bomb with true grit.

Review: New vinyl-only label Matasuna Records enters the fray with a stated focus on reworks of rare & forgotten music treasures from all over the world. The debut release, a 12" featuring four DJ-friendly edits from Voodoocuts and SoulBrigada sets the tone and has a fine titular pun to boot in Afreaka! Voodoocuts takes the A-side duties, pairing up the raw '70s Ivory Coast funk of "Kelja" with the steamy Latin styles of "Tortoise Loops". Those wanting something a bit more disco in sound will gravitate towards the "Hustleman" edit from SoulBrigada which originates from West Africa and has a killer horn line!!! "Madera" sees SoulBrigada look to Cape Verde for source material and features some subtle additions.

  2. Getting To The Middle (part II) (2:53)
Review: 1970s "Getting To The Middle" by Edwin 'Eddie' Joseph Bocage, or simply Eddie Bo, is one sublime EP in a sea of infinite soul releases from the New Orleans singer and composer. He was famous for his seductive vocal waves, but this particular single lies more on the funk end of the soul spectrum, and both parts 1 and 2 of the single instantly provoke that indescribable 'get down' feeling. Part 1 is for the party people and Part 2 is for the DJs, the latter leaving thing nice and instrumental.

Review: In a week where there's been a veritable flood of vinyl-shaped goodness from Athens Of The North, this 7" stood out still. Look up the meaning of Deep Funk online and the smarter cookies will have this New World 7", The World Today, listed as a prime example; a huge cut for the master Keb Darge back at the turn of the 21st century and a very record whose original copies trade hands for silly money. Recorded and released back in 1974 for Frank Virtue's Philly label Virtue Records, both cuts from the 7" have been kindly licensed to Athens Of The North by the man's daughters. Form an orderly queue, thank the Virtues, thank DJ Fryer, and cherish this gem of a deep funk 7!

Review: When you talk about 'kid funk', it's always long-lost B-sides that record collectors talk about like myths. But, Athens Of the North have managed to get their hands on the masters of a super-rare Virtue 7" that goes for no less that L1000 on the second-hand market in its original form. "Listen" is a deep, sublimely odd little funk tune that is as deep as you can get for boogie and funk; "Party" on the flip is no less of a gem, backed by Little George's supreme vocals and a tight little break, too. Sick.

  2. Lyn Christopher - "Take Me With You" (Thelonious beat Gillespie edit) (3:29)
Review: If edits are your game then the Galaxy Sound Co is certainly the name. Along other labels like Mukatisuku, these dudes know how to repackage lost and rare soul 7"s, and this new two-headed funk bullet from Thelonious Gillespie is just painfully on target. The first edit is of "Soul Food" by Frankie Seay & The Soul Riders, a moody, dusty percussion bomb brimming with breaks and a grainy guitar accompanied by fine brass waves. Lyn Christopher's "Take Me With You" is pruned and reshaped into a glorious soul ballad with a hard edge, and a driving rhythm led by gliding electronic guitars and an inimitable bassline. Fine work right here.

Review: Long-standing gospel singer Lewis returns on new label Wheelstown with two big-vision slabs of soul. "The Bottle" takes Gil Scott Heron to more upbeat, technicolour places while Pat's delivery retains the original sobriety and sentiment. "One Foot Before The Other" snaps us back to the Motown legacy with big backing harmonies, full orchestration and a subtle-but-present northern soul stomp. Genuine.

  2. The Fool (Trent edit) (5:02)
Review: Given that Cocktail D'Amore's first entry into the re-edit arena, CockRing D'Amore, landed almost a year ago, this follow-up is long overdue. Whereas that EP featured a trio of reworks from the extended family, both tracks on this solid 7" (snigger) come from Berlin-based DJ/producer Trent. He begins with the cheery European disco of "The Acrobat", where prominent horn lines rise and fall over slick funk guitars and shimmering strings. Flip for the cosmic disco-meets-cosmic rock masculinity of "The Fool", a killer fusion of elastic slap bass, eyes closed guitar solos and occasional blasts of glam rock vocals. Whip off your T-shirt and get to it (dancing, that is).

Review: Afro 45's / Mr Bongo show no signs of stopping their tireless run of form and, 7" after 7", they just keep on producing the goods. There's yet more '70s goodness with this new little scorcher: the A-side is 1973's "Tessassategn Eko" by Bahta Gebre Hiwot, a pensive Ethiopian pop hit for all sorts of music fans to enjoy, but "Ayalqem Tedqem" by Alemayehu Eshete on the B-side is where it's at... just listen to that bass and you'll instantly recognize this wonderful little cover.

Review: Afro7 Records once again come through with a bit of new funk for fans of labels like Mukatsuku. Tanya Ria is a newcomer on paper, but if "Do The Smasher" is anything to go by, we can safely regard her as being a total pro - funkiness and vibrations running knee deep on this heavy floor destroyer. The flip of this 7" is a little more soulful thanks to the wailing vocals on "Love You Didn't Want", but we're still very much in GET DOWN territory here...

Review: While a lot of PPU's time is spent unearthing, reviving and liberating classic boogie, disco, funk and soul from the 80s and 90s, it's also home to troves of authentic grooves tailored in contemporary times... And long-standing label fam Benedek is one of the most consistent forces behind it all. The excellently titled C.O.O.L Band and Manzanem are two of his latest guises; the former is a real Sunday afternoon lazy vibe, like an electro boogie record on at half speed with thundering weight on the powerful kicks while the latter takes us deeper into the late 80s with a Mr Fingers' style trip into primordial house music. Pure synth odysseys, the pair of them.

Review: The Soul Immigrants are D'Pac and Yogi Patel, two UK-born brothers that have collaborated with Detroit's finest over the years, striking up partnerships with respected house gurus such as Chez Damier and Kevin Saunderson. They've released steadily over the '90s and 2000s, but 2016 marks fifteen years since their last release together, and this funky 7" for Dry Rooti feels like the perfect comeback. "Yard Of Hard" is a delightful funk swinger with Fred Wesley's silly vocals running above the arrangement; it's the sort of tune that instantly calls for the dance floor. There's an instrumental cut for the DJs on the flipside...

Domu's always been a classy producer no matter what he turns his hands to and this pair of edits really do deserve to be preserved on the vinyl format - kudos to Kat! Up top, "Love Vibes" by The Emotions is given a slightly upwards pitch adjustment by Domu, with plenty of skilled filtering to boot, whilst the B-side sees Claudia Barry's classic 1978 jammer "Give it Up" is embellished with some extra raunch sauce.

Review: Wanna hear the Isley Brothers classic "It's Your Thing" given a Latin shakedown? Mr Bongos have got you covered on the latest 7" in their splendid Latin 45s series! Originally issued back in 1974 on TR Records, this Los Africanos cover is a rum heavy Nu Yorican funk-soul instrumental featuring screaming Hammond organ and FX. It's very expensive in original form now, so shout outs to Mr Bongos for pressing it up here along with an equally good 1968 cover of instrumental, boogaloo version of Eddie Floyd's all-time classic "Knock On Wood" from Machito & His Afro-Cubans.

Review: Gene Washington, a modern US soul man, appears here for Colemine alongside The Ironsides in what is perhaps the label's best single in a good while. "Next To You" is a gorgeous song, the sort of soul slinger that instantly turns the heads and lifts the moods without any fancy tricks, just powerful vocals. "I Still Love Them All" is equally stunning, but it's moodier, a more pensive soul tune that evokes feelings of euphoria in moments of self-healing and self-reflection. Recommended.

Complete with cult dancefloor hit "Funkanova" and the crossover disco hit "Always There", this LP has aged with real maturity and clout. Considering what the members did next (Tackheads, Sugarhill and Fats Comet) Wood, Brass & Steel was something of a supergroup in hindsight... And this album is where it all began.

Review: Hamburg's Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band are as enigmatic and alluring as when they released their first single back in 2007, a tidy funk 7" that was to set the scene for a very particular sort of instrumental sound. "Jungle Fever", out on their own excellent Big Crown imprint, is a 2015 single that is truly hard not to play on repeat; the tune is a delicate yet funked-out blend of raw drums and tropical steel melodies, much like the name of the band already implies! The flipside "Tender Trap" is more broken and loose in its arrangement, something that makes it perhaps even more catchy and provocative than the title track.

Review: Conceptual funk in a technical sense: legend has it, during the late 70s Andre Gibson's band offered their skills to Columbia College so audio engineering students could practice their studio and recording skills while the band enjoyed a free place to play, develop and rehearse in return. The recordings were never release... Until last year when Numero Group put out a full eponymous album that ranged from boogie to rare groove to disco soul. Now come two more originals; soft disco funk "Saturday Night" is driven by an afro-beaty groove and salubrious slap bass while "More Than Enough" struts with more of an early 80s Average White Band style vibe with just the right whiff of yacht in the air.
