Review: In a week where there's been a veritable flood of vinyl-shaped goodness from Athens Of The North, this 7" stood out still. Look up the meaning of Deep Funk online and the smarter cookies will have this New World 7", The World Today, listed as a prime example; a huge cut for the master Keb Darge back at the turn of the 21st century and a very record whose original copies trade hands for silly money. Recorded and released back in 1974 for Frank Virtue's Philly label Virtue Records, both cuts from the 7" have been kindly licensed to Athens Of The North by the man's daughters. Form an orderly queue, thank the Virtues, thank DJ Fryer, and cherish this gem of a deep funk 7!

Heartbreaker (limited white vinyl 7")
Cat: ABC 004. Rel: 09 May 16
  1. Heartbreaker (5:26)
  2. Do It 4 U (3:33)
Review: Austin Boogie Crew Records return with a fourth release, turning to San Francisco's foremost exponents of modern funk, Starship Connection. Starship members B.Bravo & Teeko have been leading the scene for years and the Intergalactic Funkateers arrive on Austin Boogie Crew brandishing a deadly modern funk cover of Zapp classic "Heartbreaker." Recorded and released digitally last year to pay homage to talkbox don Roger Troutman on the 16th anniversary of his passing, the cut now makes the overdue transfer to 45 and sounds all the better for it. Driven by talkbox harmonies, cracking drums, thumping bass, and slick halftime break downs, Starship puts their signature twist on a classic. Complementing this, the Starship Connection lay a sweet and soulful exclusive on the flip in the shape of "Do It For U."

  1. Make Me Believe In You (Tom Moulton remix) (6:28)
  2. Ain't No Love Lost (Tom Moulton remix) (5:47)
Review: Should you require further evidence of the all-round genius of Curtis Mayfield, look no further than this early '70s funk gem from Patti Jo. "Make Me Believe In You" was written and produced by the velvety-voiced musician in 1973, one of just a few singles released by Patti Jo but undoubtedly now an all-time classic. That rolling drum intro, the ear-wagging piano, the subtle orchestration and, above all, Patti Jo's killer vocal all combine for a perfect example of the halcyon days when funk was beginning to transform into disco. Mayfield himself later covered the track for the closer to his Sweet Exorcist LP! This BGP 7" sees Tom Moulton's extension of "Make Me Believe In You" combined with his remix of the other Patti Jo burner, "Ain't No Love Lost". Any self-respecting DJ needs the A-side though.

Review: One doesn't usually associate Italy with funk music on a gospel tip, but this is exactly what's happened on the third outing from fledgling label Cannonball. The Jackson Bros, a still mysterious outfit on our end, throw down the absolute truth on the vocal edit of "Thank You", a glorious and majestic pseudo disco ride that'll please everyone from dad to grandma. The instro cut is firmly in place for all your dance floor needs.

Cat: CLMN 134C. Rel: 25 Apr 16
  1. Do What You Came Here To Do (4:45)
  2. Ronin (instrumental) (3:07)
Review: LA's Orgone crew are specialists in smooth, seductive soul music, and you could say that the band is waving the flag very high in the air for the continuation and health of the genre. It was their original material on Ubiquity back in the early 2000's that gave them their fame, but these two new nuggets on Colemine are pretty on-point in terms of dancefloor destruction: "Do What You Came Here To Do" is a rough and twisted sex bomb that sounds like it was made in '76 - a tune that would make a great addition to a Quentin Tarantino flick - and the "Ronin" instrumental is simply a great, devastating piece of instrumentation for you to get DOWN to.

Review: When it comes to the very best in motown and vintage, Michigan-schooled soul, there are very few betteer than the late, great Erma Franklin. Here, we have what is possibly the artist's best and most powerful tune "Hold On, I'm Coming", one that you'll instantly recognise and warm to thanks to that lovely, powerful crescendo on the chorus. On the B-side, another absolutely timeless bomb, the wonderful "Light My Fire" - made famous through The Doors - in all its original glory and style. What a song.

Review: Serious Japanese Steel editry from Kazahaya: "Miracles" takes two recordings of the classic "I Believe In Miracles" (Mark Capanni and the Jackson Sisters) and deftly plays between the two to incredible effect with some really cool double-ups on the fills. Flip for a twist on a classic immortalised by Marlena Shaw where a thumping northern soul kickdrum drives us wild beneath the big orchestration. No messing around here.

Review: Seen on the regular alongside fellow colluder Jim Dunloop, dusty-fingered German funkateer Marc Hype returns for another round of 7" action on the ever-dependable Dusty Donuts label. Up top, Hype teams up with Naughty NMX for a heavy duty tweak of James Brown classic "The Get Down" with the added weight to the drums really sounding fresh on a good system. "Pays the cost to be the boss" indeed! Naughty NMX goes solo on the B side, retreating another J Brown standard "I Got Ants In My Pants" with some added Public Enemy - the results speak for themselves. Good work all round.

  1. Just Me & You (4:44)
  2. Your Love Is My Desire (4:44)
Review: Having appeared on several EPs throughout the late '70s and early '80s on labels like Westbound and Capitol, most people think of Erasmus Hall as one person. Rather, they were actually a collective of artists that were given the name by grandmaster George Clinton of Parliament / P-Funk. This might not be immediately audible on the gentle waves of "Just Me & You", but the song does contain a certain air of oddity and conniving funkiness that rendered that period of disco just so damn enticing. The flip contains "Your Love Is My Desire", another gentle heart-warmer to stick on in those more intimate moments... What a delightful little 7"!

Review: Classic Soul styles from Detroit ensemble Will Sessions pressed up on authentic dinked 45! Run Don't Walk Away finds the Sam Beaubien-led band working once more with vocalist Coco, and if you picked up Boss Lady, that 2013 funk jammer they previously collaborated on, you will be all over this like a bad suit. Coco takes centre stage here, her heart-wrenchingingly soulful vocals leading the way whilst the Will Sessions gang beat out an instrumental groove you'd be hard pressed to separate from the JBs finest.

Review: J Rocc is rightly hailed as one of the best DJs out there, in possession of a vast music knowledge and the skills to deploy it with party-killing effect behind the decks. Last year saw J Rocc launch the Funky Presidents Edits series with the first two 7"s selling out immediately! We expect a similar situation with this third volume which leads out with a killer edit of Earth Wind & Fire classic "Brazilian Rhythm". That classic vocal harmony meets an equally iconic drum break with J Rocc's edit mastery coming to the fore over the course of the cut. The Bonus Beats version on the flip means the more dextrous DJs out there might want to consider doubling up on this beauty.

Review: Wanna hear the Isley Brothers classic "It's Your Thing" given a Latin shakedown? Mr Bongos have got you covered on the latest 7" in their splendid Latin 45s series! Originally issued back in 1974 on TR Records, this Los Africanos cover is a rum heavy Nu Yorican funk-soul instrumental featuring screaming Hammond organ and FX. It's very expensive in original form now, so shout outs to Mr Bongos for pressing it up here along with an equally good 1968 cover of instrumental, boogaloo version of Eddie Floyd's all-time classic "Knock On Wood" from Machito & His Afro-Cubans.

Review: The Foster Jackson Group are one of those forgotten but highly coveted one-hit disco wonders that exist in the bottomless pit that is often classed simply as 'soul'. All that aside, these people made an incredible 12" back in 1979 that has been going for serious bucks on the second-hand market, but thankfully the prodigious P&P Records have saved the day yet again. "Feel The Spirit" is a devilish, inimitable disco jingle that is split between the more percussion ridden "Long Disco Version", and a more contained, more floor-focussed "Disco Version" They both contain that instantly addictive dose of piano, though. Check it out, you'll know what we mean...

Review: Pressed up on a tidy little 7" format, Mellow Mellow Right On put their on mark on RSD 2016 with a double-barrelled reissue of two bittersweet boogie cuts from the mid 1980's. First up, 'Sweet' Charles Sherrell appears under a re-edit of his own "Yes It's You", an instantly seductive soul bomb that'll have you humming within the first bar - oh those power vocal, Lord! The flip is up to Glenn Jones, and the RCA veteran receives a subtle makeover of "I Am Somebody" banger - filled with ringing synths, power beats and the man's own deep and sensual vocals riding high.

Review: It would be fair to say that Estiban Lindsay's one and only album, 1980's L.A Walk, is something of a sought-after rarity. Considered by many disco/boogie diggers to be a must-have, original copies of the Canadian classic currently change hands for three-figure sums online. Ever the dusty-fingered digger, Nik Weston has managed to license two tracks from the album after hearing global trotting DJ Hunee championing the main track in his sets in 2015 , and provides his own extended dancefloor re-edits. Both are subtly done, with Weston teasing out Lindsay's grooves and making more of his deliciously soulful versions, all without adding needless house drums or contemporary production tricks. The EP also contains the original version of the warm, disco-boogie gem "Come To Me". As played by Hunee,Eddie C,Tom Noble,Admin , Mike Shaw, Volcov,Frank Booker,Red Greg, Ashley Beedle,Joey Negro.Dom Servini,Miles Eastwick and more...

Review: As per usual, the unstoppable Mukatsuku delivers the undeliverable, and somehow the label boss Nik Weston has managed to license a pair of sought after tunes to find on the second-hand market. It's the second instalment of the Club Jazz series with this 45 a Hungary vs France sound clash.Hungary easily wins this one thanks to the sublime rhythm that is "Bamba" by Dimenzio, an inimitable jazz-dance leviathan that manages to mash-up all the right elements of jazz together with something a little weirder and electronic - a truly supreme piece of music that is recommended to ANYONE. Marius Culter's "Diamant" is a high calibre jazz funk missile, and works beautifully as a stand-alone, but its somewhat swamped by the sheer quality of its counterpart. Recommended. As played by Dean Rudland, Mr Thing, Ashely Beedle, Faze Action,Scrimshire,Frank Booker,Nancy Noise and Pete from On The Corner Records etc

Focusing on the period that the '70s met the '80s, Selected Works pulls together five delicious slices of Kawasaki bliss from a boundary pushing discography that spans writing, arranging, producing and playing. For an introduction to Kawasaki, this release is near perfect, taking in sublime jazz through heaving slabs of funk to out-there electronic vibes. Extra context is provided in the extensive sleeve notes from Marc Rowlands that pull from his 2015 interview with Kawasaki. Despite being five tracks long, this still feels like a generous rifle through the Ryo archives.

Review: 1968's "I'm Chief Kamanawanalea" is perhaps one of the greatest forgotten nuggets of pure breakbeatism, and the original by The Turtles dates back to 1968. The date isn't perhaps that surprising in relation to the sounds used and the quirkiness of the tune, but it's the fact that it sounds like straight-up hip-hop from early 80s NY; Chief Rocca aka J Rocc does a bit of editing on this version, but the meat and bones of the original are definitely there. Steady B features on the flip with a remix from BDP, and this one is a pure throwback hip-hop banger like they used to make them - think Run DMC but much more from the underground.

They begin with "Magic Wand Steel Band", an Afro-influenced, Island-friendly fusion of low-slung disco-funk breaks, sharp guitar licks and expansive steel band solos. Flip for the relentlessly rolling, synth boogie-goes-disco house genius of "Love Coma", which sounds like a late night festival anthem in the making. Like everything else released on Resista, this one won't stay on the shelves for long!

  1. Swinging Stars Of Dominica - "Las Mal Parle" (3:17)
  2. Swingin' Stars Orchestra - "Jam Jam" (4:10)
Review: The Sofrito label rarely, if ever, get is wrong, doesn't it? Once again, the London label bursts through the dance with two utterly steaming Haitian destroyers from Dominica's no.1, and these two cuts are bound to satisfy just about anyone into GOOD music. "Las Mal Parle" is a swinging, instantly hummable rhythm that you can safely leave on repeat for hours at a time, while "Jam Jam" is more of a Latino groove for the big ball dance - another stunner and a perfect companion to the beast that is the A-side. Another solid, timeless record from Sofrito.
