  3. Purple Rain (feat Rayla Sunshine) (5:46)
  4. Like A Virgin (feat Rayla Sunshine) (5:12)
Review: We've just realised this instant that Hannover's Agogo Records has been in the game for an entire decade now. Time flies when you get consistently excellent releases, right? That's what this German collective has done with this label, and each new release by them comes with both quality-assurance and some killer, jazz-filtered vibes from all over the world. Their mascots, The Hi-Fly Orchestra, are in top form across these four new slingers; the fun starts with the big-room funk ballads of "Let Love Rule" and "Let's Get It On", both featuring the voice of Karl Frierson, and capable of destroying just about any dance floor, respectively. On the flip, there's slower, more sensual vibes on both "Purple Rain" and "Like A Virgin", two gorgeous covers of stone-cold classics, led by the voice of Rayla Sunshine.

  1. Keep It Up
  2. The Silence That You Keep

Milton Wright's perfect deep Soul classic "Keep It Up" has always been a top shelf record, everything about it is almost flawless! Whether it's Milton's silky vocal delivery, the incessant guitar driven back beat or the total space Funk vibe of his omnipresent ARP-2600 synthesizer this record has it all. Originally released on TK Disco's more Soul and Funk orientated Alston label which was home to many legendary artists and records, this 1975 sunshine classic never fails to make people move. A classic rare groove indeed. "The Silence That You Keep" takes up side-B, a jazzy, flute driven love song that again features Milton's perfect voice and some fantastic arrangement. A real gem of a record, with the original 45 changing hands for over L100 a time in used condition.

This is the first time "Keep It Up" has been re-issued in it's original 45 rpm format with the original Alston label artwork. It's been re-mastered, re-pressed and made available again with the permission of TK Disco / Alston Records, Miami Florida, USA.

  1. When You Have Love (1:51)
  2. Run For Cover (2:48)
Review: Another week, another masterful 7" reissue from the unstoppable Athens Of The North. Moreover, it's another sublime find from the label, and it sticks closer to their usual trick of finding one-off soul singles from much coveted artists of the '70s and '80s. Felony Theft only released this one single back in 1972, "When You Have Love", but you can understand why AOTN would want to resurface its dusty percussion for the modern audience; it's one of those rare tunes that sounds like nothing else from the genre, a quirky piece of magic for the diggers. "Run For Cover" is fun, upbeat but less alluring than its A-side sibling, but that is not to say that it isn't also a fine slice of soul-funk mastery. Go.

Review: Fruit's delicious disco flavours keep blossoming. It started with an unearthed and unreleased album that finally saw the light of day after almost 40 years this spring. Now on this 12" we return to their only big single of the time (and most well known) "If You Feel It Say Yeah" but with a previously unreleased 12" that's been extended in all the right places. The evergreen B-side "Say It" plays the perfect foil with its ballroom disco soul dynamic. Apparently there's another unearthed 45 to come too. Tasty.

  2. Music (Get's Me High) (3:53)
Review: Nothing says 'disco' quite like records that shamelessly celebrate the delights of having a good time. Flipside's 1980 jam, "Havin' A Party", is one of the better examples - and certainly amongst the most obscure. The punchy disco-funk number was initially self-released on the band's own Flipside Records imprint, and has been unknown to all but a handful of hardcore crate diggers ever since. It has certainly aged well, with urgent vocals and clipped guitars riding a seriously heavy disco-funk groove. B-side "Music (Gets Me High)" is almost as good, with superb, hip-hop friendly drum breaks ushering in a hazy, super-sweet song that revels in its' joyous celebration of the merits of feel-good music.

Review: Southern soul star Jeff Floyd was just 18 when he provided vocals for this Michael Floyd-produced single in 1978. "Life Is A Miracle" was Jax Transit Authority's only single, and has since gone on to be an in-demand item amongst Northern Soul DJs, in particular. Given that original copies fetch upwards of L5,000, this Athens Of The North reissue is certainly welcome. Brilliantly, this pressing not only features the sought-after original 7" A-side (here tucked away on the flip), but also the previously unreleased full-length version. Predictably, it's a thing of great beauty, with Jeff Floyd's brilliant vocals soaring above a wave of undulating disco-funk bass, spiraling synth solos and clipped guitar riffs.

Rolling with a real sense of momentum and cool drama, Fields and his troupe still have heaps of love to give. The feeling's mutual too.

Review: For the latest release on their on-point Brasil 45s sub-label, Mr Bongo takes a trip back to 1977, and the early days of legendary fusion outfit Banda Black Rio. Both the cuts here are taken from the band's brilliant debut album, Maria Fumaca, and see them fusing Brasilian samba and jazz sounds with the righteous, dancefloor-friendly grooves of funk and disco. "Maria Fumaca" itself is a deliciously sunny and sweaty affair, with punchy horns, eyes-closed guitar solos and jazz-funk electic piano lines rising above a carnival-ready samba-funk groove. The U.S funk influence comes to the fore more on flipside "Mr Funky Samba", which sounds like Azymuth jamming with members of the T.K Disco, Philadelphia International and Salsoul house bands. Yep, it's that good.

Review: Although Brazil's Banda Black Rio remain infamous for the albums that they recorded in the late 1970s, two beautiful LPs that rode that singular wave of samba-ridden jazz dance, 1980's "Miss Cheryl" is an outstanding tune, and we can hear why RCA picked it up back in the day. Mr Bongo provides us with the reissue here and, if you haven't heard it, it's an absolute delight which switches between disco, psych, and something inherently Brazilian - there's even a wacky synth in there, for good measure. Compatriot Miele appears on the flip with "Melo Do Tagarela (Rappers Delight)", a sublime slice of early, electronic boogie that sounds as fresh today as it did back at the tail end of the 70s. A devious little reissue that you should own...

Review: The Budabeats imprint is a welcomed addition to the funk and soul reissue game, and this third instalment from the label is exactly what we need to be hearing right now - something upbeat, tropical and rare in its original format. On Side A, you got 1971's "O Telefone Tocou Novamente" by the Brazilian Singers, and it's a wavy, magical psych-funk bombshell in the same vein as Marcos Valle's best work. On the flip, there's a special surf-rock-inspired song by Peru's Los Belkings and, yes, it's from 1969 and still sounding like a total monster almost forty years later. Recommended!

Review: Melbourne is home to one of the strongest funk revival scenes on the planet. Amongst the scene's heaviest hitters - in more than one sense - is drummer-turned-producer Ivan Kkatchoyan. Having been part of heavy funk combo Cookin' On 3 Burners since the dawn of the millennium, he's now the driving force behind Choi Records. His heavy funk rhythms and astute period production are at the heart of Mayfield's "On The Ropes", which also includes some stellar horns and - in its A-side form, at least - some on-point vocals from Carla Troiano. Like previous Choi releases by Traffic and Fulton Street, it's a revivalist funk treat.

The quartet is made up of Sid Barcelona, Jon Horvath, Rob Myers and Steve Raskin, a collaboration of musicians who have given us a wonderful selection of music across many a genre. They've almost always appeared on their of Fort Knox label, so this new single for the Dinked imprint feels like a welcomed change in their releasing pattern. It's a one-track situation here, but "Don't Go" is a funk bomb capable of deconstructing any dancefloor form here to Detroit, and Joe Quarteman's zesty vocals are immediately hummable. Check that instrumental cut, too - pure, break joy!

Review: Afro disco fresh from 79: Eko Roosevelt Louis's third album Funky Disco Music will go down as one of Cameroon's finest disco LPs. Produced and pressed by French label Dragon Phenix, it's still reasonably easy to track down, too. For a taster, grab three of its tropical charms on this Fly By Night repress: "Funky Disco Music" is an infectious vocal-led cut that's written solely to make people get down, "Ndolo Embe Mulema" struts with much more Afro rock fusion while the harmonies of "Bowa'a Mba Ngebe" are sweeter than the finest honey you've ever tasted. For contemporary kicks Riccio has expertly touched the title track for a modern dancefloor/DJ friendly punch. Perfect.

Review: Misha Panfilov is a man of many talents. Not only is the Estonian producer an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, but he's also something of a sonic magpie. To date, his fuzzy musical output has included revivalist jazz-funk, space-age analogue electronica, and bossanova inspired easy listening. His core sound, though, remains funk, which he mostly explores on the Misha Panfilov Sound Combo releases. "You Got It Right" is typically psychedelic, with Panfilov peppering a low-slung groove with all manner of musical solos and Eastern-influenced chants. The hallucinatory dancefloor fun continues on the flip, where the constantly rising "Solar Blast" - all dusty analogue synths, wavy flute solos and killer funk breaks - cuts an impressively tipsy figure.

Informed by his impeccable turntablist skills, both versions of "Break Yo Self" offer a whirlwind trip through scorching, floor-friendly funk and rock breaks, with a wide range of classic and little-known samples thrown in for good measure. The A-side "Breakbeat Lenny Tribute" version begins with some Bob James style organ fluidity, before ramping up the energy levels via a string of killer drum hooks. If anything, the flipside "Breakbeat Lou Tribute" is even more party-friendly, with J-Rocc quickly running through almost everything in his box of tricks. In other words, it's a cut-up masterclass.

Review: James Brown still casts a long shadow over hip-hop, particularly the turntablist community. Even renowned diggers such as Jason 'J Rocc' Jackson keep returning to the Godfather of Soul's heavyweight, break-filled catalogue. Here, Jackson pays tribute by delivering two impeccable, Steinski style cut-ups of highlights from the great man's bulging catalogue. It's been done before, of course - see DJ Format's "Stealin' James" 12" from a few years back - but rarely with quite so much vim and vigour. Both "Part 1 & 2" and flipside "Part 5 & 6" hit the spot, whipping through classic JB breaks and samples at a furious rate. As a result, they should be considered essential DJ tools for party-rockin' DJs.

"Could Have Been A Lady" has a deep bluesy rock twang to its groove with just a toe or two in the pub while the curiously titled "Glue Bag Flags" takes us on a much sleazier trip with samples, a slinky bassline, a perfectly executed vocal Q&A and a zero-to-sixty tempo switch when you least expect it. Although they've never stopped recording - or touring, for that matter - this outing on Kept Records is their first release for two years. A-side "La Raza" is a breezy but bass-heavy affair, with multi-lingual rap vocals and tight turntable scratches riding a dubbed-out, funk-fuelled hip-hop groove. The band's long-held Latin influences come to the fore once more on flipside "Abrabeesh", which boasts some seriously tasty horn parts, fluid vibraphone solos and brilliant drum work. Both tracks are musically expansive, and amongst the best things they've done to date.

Review: Mukatsuku new release is part of the 10 years of Mukatsuku Records series and contains two remastered tracks of Atlanta musician Ojeda Penn presented here according to Ojeda officially for the very first time. The A side kicks off with the extended holy grail instrumental version of 'Brotherson' taken from the Happiness album. There were two versions of the album Happiness in 1980 on the IFE independent label. They looked almost identical but the first version contained the now rarer elongated 9 & half minute jazz fused instrumental version of 'Brotherson' and then a few months later Penn recut the same album but with a much shorter version of the main track but this time adding strings and vocals assisted by Tommy Stewart from 'Bump N Hustle Music' fame. The former version is now being sold up to 500 dollors so this 180 gram single is a welcome release to the reissue market. Review: These days, it's hard to find contemporary artists making real, unadulterated psych-funk. Combo Chimbita are one such outfit; they're masters of their genre, and they have a real skill for amalgamating the best of South American and African rock. El Corredor De Jaguar comes out courtesy of Names You Can Trust, and its four sublime tunes are a true breath of fresh air among so much sub-standard, 70s rip-offs. "Pajaro" sets the scene with a cool, moody bass and intricate percussion knots, and "Tamborero" picks up the tempo and injects a glorious wave of Latino suaveness into the track's vocals. Our favourite piece has to be "Frio Severo", though, with its stepping drums and hummable guitar hook, but "Chimbita Theme" does a wonderful job of closing this stupendous 7" off with a wild and psychedelic infusion of guitars and tribal drumming. Highly recommended!

The alias of Boston musician Andre Evans, the disco and boogie project was the subject of an extensive retrospective a few years ago, but PPU have managed to uncover these two further gems regardless. "Where Love Lives" is the killer cut here, an "accelerated funk anthem" whose vintage synth bass sounds particularly relevant in today's retro-obsessed musical climate. On the B-side is "I Want Your Body", from Evans' side project Royale, a more classic disco number that still hits all the right notes.

Review: You can rely on the Sofrito label to unearth the most daring of dance music from the most obscure corners of the earth. This latest instalment lands on Madagascar's shores, a stunning landscape with relatively little known about its music from the typical Westerner; as usual, though, we are pleasantly surprised by what we discover on this totally killer two-tracker. The sound is called Salegy, a style originating from the island's North-Western quarters, and that evokes fast 6/8 rhythms accompanied by steely percussion folds and tribalistic chanting: "Mavandeza" is a deep and mystical song performed by the Vetson Androy outfit, who were famous proponents of the sound at the height of its popularity in 1978. The B-side is from tenders later, and Joajoby's "Tarantasy Maitso" is another glorious slice of vocal-led percussion in the island's loose and spiritual style. Unmissable.

Review: Brainstorm was the first act signed to Clarence Avart's Tabu Records, way back in 1976. By the time they released "Hot For You" in 1979, they'd already become one of the most talked-about disco-funk outfits in the United States. Here, that legendary track gets the Danny Krivit re-edit treatment, with the legendary New York DJ/producer wisely stretching out the rubbery, low-slung groove, hazy horn lines and urgent, sexually-charged vocal. On the flip, Krivit turns his attention to "Journey To The Light", the lead cut from the band's 1978 album of the same name. A far sweeter, woozier and more emotional cut than the A-side club-rocker, it's nevertheless a fine chunk of horn-heavy, synth-laden disco-funk goodness.
