Cat: AOE 021. Rel: 26 Sep 16
  1. When You Have Love (1:51)
  2. Run For Cover (2:48)
Review: Athens Of The North lay down more history with the obscure and somewhat delicate tones and textures of short-lived soul act Felony Theft. Its initial pressing filed under super-rare, it's known to fetch high prices in the past but label boss Fryer has toiled to ensure we can all enjoy, savor and add life to it. Both sides rocking laidback brushed beats and golden harmonies with lightly strummed guitars driving the grooves at an unhurried pace, this is another cracking excavation by AOTN.

Cat: ATH 12002. Rel: 26 Sep 16
  1. If You Feel It Say Yeah (Full Lenth mix) (6:48)
  2. Say It (Full Lenth mix) (4:24)
Review: Fruit's delicious disco flavours keep blossoming. It started with an unearthed and unreleased album that finally saw the light of day after almost 40 years this spring. Now on this 12" we return to their only big single of the time (and most well known) "If You Feel It Say Yeah" but with a previously unreleased 12" that's been extended in all the right places. The evergreen B-side "Say It" plays the perfect foil with its ballroom disco soul dynamic. Apparently there's another unearthed 45 to come too. Tasty.

Cat: ATH 037. Rel: 26 Sep 16
  1. Life Is A Miracle (unreleased Full version) (4:55)
  2. Life Is A Miracle (part 1) (3:36)
Review: Southern soul star Jeff Floyd was just 18 when he provided vocals for this Michael Floyd-produced single in 1978. "Life Is A Miracle" was Jax Transit Authority's only single, and has since gone on to be an in-demand item amongst Northern Soul DJs, in particular. Given that original copies fetch upwards of L5,000, this Athens Of The North reissue is certainly welcome. Brilliantly, this pressing not only features the sought-after original 7" A-side (here tucked away on the flip), but also the previously unreleased full-length version. Predictably, it's a thing of great beauty, with Jeff Floyd's brilliant vocals soaring above a wave of undulating disco-funk bass, spiraling synth solos and clipped guitar riffs.

  2. Special Night (part 2) (2:51)
Review: Veteran soul man Lee Fields has been touring and releasing music almost constantly since the late 1960s. In recent years, he's struck up a great partnership with the Truth & Soul label's house band, The Expressions. Their latest collaborative single, "Special Night", is something of a cinematic soul treat, with Fields wringing every bit of emotion out of his cracking, heartfelt vocal. The sumptuous A-side (subtitled 'Part 1') is joined on the flip by a sparser, stripped back version ('Part 2') that somehow manages to further emphasize the brilliance of Fields' lyrics and vocal. Both versions feel like future end-of-night classics.

Review: Still scorching from the heat of their debut album 55, Hamburg's mysterious steel pan handlers return with a dope little 45 that features one of the excellent covers from their album plus an exclusive that we guarantee will drive your next floor crazy... Dennis Coffey's "Scorpio" takes the lead with its instantly distinctive break and pace. Flip for Sugarhill's "8th Wonder" that's riddled with confidently swung drums, smoky trumpets and a groove so funky you might just have to drop it twice. Give the drummer some.

  1. Brazilian Singers - "O Telefone Tocou Novamente" (2:56)
  2. Los Belkings - "Septima Partrulla" (2:16)
Review: The Budabeats imprint is a welcomed addition to the funk and soul reissue game, and this third instalment from the label is exactly what we need to be hearing right now - something upbeat, tropical and rare in its original format. On Side A, you got 1971's "O Telefone Tocou Novamente" by the Brazilian Singers, and it's a wavy, magical psych-funk bombshell in the same vein as Marcos Valle's best work. On the flip, there's a special surf-rock-inspired song by Peru's Los Belkings and, yes, it's from 1969 and still sounding like a total monster almost forty years later. Recommended!

Cat: CR 003. Rel: 22 Aug 16
  1. Young People (4:35)
  2. Problems & Pain (3:54)
Review: Australia's Choi Records keep the funk hot with a second seven inch serving in a matter of months that introduces the Juno office to the refined sounds of Melbourne troupe Fulton Street. The funk and soul septet are led - in classic fashion - by the wonderfully belting vocals of lead singer Shannon Wick whose commanding delivery ensures lead track, "Young People", slots in nicely in the long-running canon of socially-conscious funk jammers. Behind her, the Fulton Street band show what a tight instrumental unit they are. On the flip, Fulton Street's groovier side comes to the fore on "Problems & Pain" with Sly & The Family Stone and The JBs coming to mind as the band's organ and sax players lead the way. A great 7".

Review: London/Berlin 45" crew fatten us up once again with a deeply detailed homage to the mighty A Tribe Called Quest: Sharp takes the lead with a supreme blend of "Find A Way" and a Bebel Gilberto cut that Dilla acquainted many of us with. Flip for Naughty NMX hug the EU tearfully and reverse engineer "Check The Rhime" by bringing us back to the delicious Minnie Ripperton source material. This quest is over.

Review: Kylie Auldist is a heavyweight Aussie soul singer whose powerful lungs have graced many a hit over the years. Now, with the help of Lance Ferguson and Graeme Pogson, she's recorded a solo album, Family Tree, and this here EP features a selection of tracks from it. Gone is the raw funk vibes of old with Auldist opting for a bright and synthetic mid-'80s pop-soul sound instead. It largely works too with the Donna Allen-esque "Sensational", the chrome and carpet grooves of "Family Tree" and the late-'70s US funk style of "Rewards" as standouts.

Review: Lugnut Brand are one of those labels releasing and championing deep, sensual funk and soul in 2016. We say this because there aren't many good ones around, so it's refreshing to hear stuff so dope and fresh out and up on our vinyl charts. Here we have two funky little slices of organ-fuelled funk, two parts of "Sal's-U-Save" to be precise, but which are really just one long funk bullet spread across two sides of the 7". This is jerky, fun, upbeat dance music with a glorious late '60s twist.

Review: Few re-edit minded imprints do it quite like Macadam Mambo. The French label is renowned for eschewing the tried-and-tested, instead asking its' contributors to deliver rearrangements of obscure, left-of-centre gems. This latest 12", from label co-founder Guillaume Des Bois, is packed with such eccentric treats. After beginning with the tactile, easy listening flutter of "Brightness (Intro)", Des Bois turns his attention to the crunchy, guitar-laden AOR disco funk of "Mambo Nassau". "El Chicanos" sees him tweak an organ solo-heavy chunk of acid-fried West Coast funk-rock, while the spiraling "Gypsy Disco" is a synthesizer-era, Balkan disco treat (and delightfully camp to boot). If that wasn't enough to set the pulse racing, he heads for outerspace with the intergalactic synths and undeniably cosmic grooves of "Andromeda".

  1. Brotherson (Rare long disco instrumental version)
  2. Brotherson (Strings & vocal shorter album version)
Review: Mukatsuku new release is part of the 10 years of Mukatsuku Records series and contains two remastered tracks of Atlanta musician Ojeda Penn presented here according to Ojeda officially for the very first time. The A side kicks off with the extended holy grail instrumental version of 'Brotherson' taken from the Happiness album. There were two versions of the album Happiness in 1980 on the IFE independent label. They looked almost identical but the first version contained the now rarer elongated 9 & half minute jazz fused instrumental version of 'Brotherson' and then a few months later Penn recut the same album but with a much shorter version of the main track but this time adding strings and vocals assisted by Tommy Stewart from 'Bump N Hustle Music' fame. The former version is now being sold up to 500 dollors so this 180 gram single is a welcome release to the reissue market. Mukatsuku, after many years of discussion is glad to finally be in a position to finally put out both versions on one phat 12''. Juno copies come in exclusive hand stamped kraft paper inner sleeve, additional branded card sleeve + stickers and a signed insert.

Review: Do not adjust your browser, it's Milton Bowser: one of Germany's few true funkateers from the late '70s foundation era. Armed with just a smidgeon of compere kitsch and big band showmanship "The Ride" is a punchy sing along slice of funk drama with very crisp delivery and story telling while "The Thief" takes us on much more of an Elton John style trip with galloping pianos, detailed phrases and a climax that seems to never end. Ja wohl.

Review: The Gene Dudley Group's debut album, Zambidoose, included one of the highlights of Summer 2015 - a righteous, brass-heavy funk cover of Todd Terje's nu-disco anthem "Inspector Norse". Here, other tracks from that set are given a new lease of life via three new remixes. Alexander Lay-Far kicks things off, subtly turning "Do The Cookie Dough Throw" into a righteous chunk of swinging, offbeat Latin house/funk fusion. In contrast, mixing desk maestro Wrongtom delivers a booming, bass-heavy dub reggae interpretation of "Tiger Jaw", while BJ Smith goes all warm, organic and Balearic on his invitingly sunny mix of "Jackpot", complete with dreamy vocals from Anne Frankenstein.

Review: Having teased us with a reissued 45 a few months back, Aloha Got Soul now present Aura's full and only album. Hawaiian soul legends who really should have experienced much more spotlight time, their laid back disco soul still punches with raw funk and finesse almost 40 years later. The insane doubled-up bass runs and tight horns of "Magic Lover", the turbo disco struts of "I'll Remember You", the fly-by-night, freeform psychedelia of "No Beginning, No End" and the hazy jazz horn swirls of "Winds Of Love". The whole body of work captures of picture perfect moment in soul that's been criminally overlooked for decades.

Review: Pure Ghanaian gold, Disco Documentary: Full Of Funk was a rare private press released in 1979 never to be released again... Until now. Dusting off the long lost tapes with due care and attention, BBE have kindly reminded us that disco had much wider impact than the US and Europe. Nana Love's slightly nasal tones are instantly alluring, but it's the clam-tight musicianship that really bites. Big Bernard Edwards bass, shiny guitar twangs, extensive organ noodling and vibrant Afrofunk horns galore, this is a truly stunning document.

Review: Since the early 2000s, the NY duo Kon & Amir have been among the best disco editors around, and should now surely be seen as being amongst the very best of the East Coast disco scene. This is their 2007 compilation, Off The Track Volume One: The Bronx, a near twenty magnificent disco blazers that have been stripped down and anted-up by the duo for the purpose of today's dance floor. What's impressive, though, is how Kon & Amir manage to allow the original tunes to speak for themselves and, if anything, their editing allows the originals to sound even louder and prouder than ever before. There's plenty of heavy gear in here from the likes of Masterforce, STUD Band, The London Experimental Jazz Quartet, and if this doesn't satisfy your boogie needs, then we don't know what will.

As shown on this detailed, widescreen boogie, funk and disco collection for BBC. Splattering the vibrant collection with a handful of their own edits (TB Funk's salubrious struts on "Free Blow", fly-by boogie falsettos on Living Color's "Plastic People"), the Grasso bro's have put together a package that's eye-opening, enlightening and damn fine to party to. Review: Nicole "Lady" Wray has enjoyed an up and down kind of career, moving from hotly-tipped late '90s R&B chart-topper to well regarded backing singer in the space of a few short years. She returned to the limelight in 2013 alongside Terri Walker in Lady, and here delivers her first solo set for some time. Queen Alone has an undeniably retro-futurist feel, with Wray cannily combining hip-hop style drum breaks with songs and instrumentation that mine 1960s soul for inspiration. It's a formula that guarantees thrills throughout, from the shuffling, head-nodding beauty of "In Love (Don't Mess Things Up)" and organ-laden slow-jam "Make Me Over", to the righteous, Dap Kings style dancefloor brilliance of "Bad Girl".

Review: During military service with the Nigerian military in 1978, former Fela Kuti collaborators Ojo Okeji and Abayomi "Easy" Adio decided to form a new band. Featuring other musicians recruited from within the ranks of the 6th Infantry Brigade of the Nigerian Army, the Shango Dance Band recorded an eponymous debut album that was only ever available to other military personnel. Here, it gets a first worldwide reissue. Similar in ethos to the Afrobeat sound the duo had helped Fela develop - but with extra layers of guitar, percussion, and gravel-throated U.S soul style vocals - Shango Dance Band is as potent and funky as anything released in Nigeria during the period. Thanks to the excellent Comb & Razor Sound, it's no longer a hidden classic.

Review: Shango is the name for the Yoruba 'Thunder God' in Nigeria and Ojo Okeji, the leader of the Shango Dance Band was all about injecting military power and warlike energy in his own strain of Nigerian highlife and afrobeat. However, apart from all of Okeji's cult-like stories involving him and his part in the Nigerian army during a time of civil unrest in the late 60's and through to the 70's, and his often troublesome relationship with the great Fela Kuti, the truly special aspect of the Shango Dance Band album is that it was never properly released following its production in 1974. Comb & Razor have done the right thing here and, without them, this magical LP would still be locked away in the never-ending vaults of Nigerian music. This is very personal, incredibly singular African jazz-dance with a raucous psychedelic edge that lifts it high and mighty above the competition. A truly special album - DO NOT MISS IT.

Review: We probably say this more than we should, but this time our statement really isn't prone to hyberbole: we love the Cultures Of Soul label, and whatever genre they're reissuing, we can always count on them to deliver the quality like no other imprint. From Evans Pyramid to the recent black gospel compilation they've released, we have nothing but good stuff to say about them, and this is equally true of this new South African disco collection from the years 1980-1984. The title alone should do the trick but trust us, there is nothing but fire in here, and if you're the sort of collector scouting for rare African rhythms then this is the gear for you. The Cannibals start off with some lovely docile disco jams, Harari's "Party" is a sublime lo-fi funk cut, the Don Laka material is pure disco glory, and the remaining tunes by the likes of Neville Nash or Al Etto are able to destroy ANY dance floor from here to Durban. Top marks from us...
