  3. Ndogo Ndogo (4:28)
  4. Msondo Ngoma (4:15)
Review: Afro 7's latest beautifully packaged 12" - check the luscious, silk-screen printed sleeve - takes a trawl through the back catalogue of obscure Kenyan band Them Mushrooms. The outfit founded in 1969 and continued recording until the mid 1990s, but it's for their late '70s and early '80s synth-laden sevens that they're arguably best known. The four tracks showcased here are all taken from those impossible-to-find singles. There are highlights around every turn, from the chanted male vocals, undulating synths and fretless bass brilliance of "Akumu Nvar Kisimu" and hazy, triple time funk swing of "Ndogo Ndogo", to the fizzing Moog lines and rubbery bass of sweet EP closer "Msondo Ngoma".

  2. Richard's People - "Yo Yo" (re edit) (2:48)
Review: It's landed! Two highly iconic and tricky-to-trace funk breaks from the 70s get the treatment from the mysterious new US series B Boy Funk Breaks. Blackrock's psychedelically twinged "Yeah Yeah" gets a slight shuffle and refocus while retaining the all the instrumental drama and swashbuckling drop that's led with JB-level bandleadership while the edit of Richard's People take us straight to church, front row centre. Again laced with another clean and killer break, this is powermove gold. Limited to 300 copies.

  1. The Winstons - "Amen, Brother" (extended Breaks Special edition) (3:32)
  2. The Chosen Few - "Candy I'm So Doggone Mixed Up" (extended Breaks Special edition) (3:25)
Review: The Beats & Breaks 7" series was founded to satisfy the desires of DJs, mainly by serving up re-edits that put some of the world's most recognizable drum breaks front and centre. This edition kicks off with a rearrangement of the Winstons' "Amen Brother", whose drum break not only became a staple of U.S hip-hop in the 1980s, but also the foundation of jungle and later drum and bass. This edit wisely gives plenty of air time to the infamous drum break, dropping into it at frequent intervals in between bouts of punchy, horn-heavy funk. Flip to the B-side for a tastefully chopped and rearranged version of The Chosen Few's super-sweet 1976 soul cut "Candy I'm So Doggone Mixed Up".

Review: Those who dig bustling breaks and hip-hop style funk cut-ups should already be well aware of Djar One, whose semi-regular seven-inch singles frequently appear towards the top of Juno's sales charts. Naturally, there's plenty to enjoy on his latest two-track assault. There's a definite funk swagger to A-side "The Get Down" featuring Andy Cooper from Ugly Duckling .The B Side is a collaboration with the Japanese MC RYT from the world-famous Serpat Crew !! Review: REPRESS ALERT: With the Grupo Almendra album fresh out of the gates, Italian label Best Records jump right back in with a crucial slice of disco funk from noted arranger, producer and karate expert Pino Presti. "You Know The Way" is a slinky party starter with on-point slap bass, lively brass and sumptuous Philly strings of the highest order. As if the original wasn't funky enough, the B-side features a disco remix from dearly departed New York disco legend Tee Scott, who subtly buffs up the dancefloor potential of the track to devastating effect.

  2. Take Time (extended) (6:14)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Once more scouring the annals of disco history for the hottest jams, Best look beyond Italy and snap up this much-vaunted slice of American funk from 1982. While second hand prices can get out of control, it's not hard to hear why this glittering prize from Jagg would be so coveted - it's got everything. Jazz-leaning slap bass, mean synthesizer chops and soaring vocals - "Take Time" is prime to set the party off, and no longer is it the preserve of wealthy collectors. Originally a single-sided affair, Best have done the right thing and filled the B-side up with an extended version to let that groove roll on even longer.

Review: 1970s soul survivor Lee Fields has struck up a pretty special relationship with The Expressions, the house band of Truth & Soul writer/arranger/producer Leon Michels. The veteran vocalist has now released a trio of brilliant albums with the combo, as well as some killer singles. "Coming Home", a sweet-natured slab of '60s soul complete with brilliant musicianship and authentically fuzzy production, is another must-have. B-side "Precious Love", a torch song with a backing track that sits somewhere between punchy Southern Soul and laidback funk, is also superb. In other words, if you love soul, you need this in your life.

  1. Ronaldo Reseda - "E Novamente Mas Que Nada" (5:19)
  2. Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti - "Ginga" (2:57)
Review: The 65th volume in Mr Bongo's admirable Brazil 45s series shines a light on Rio De Janeiro's turn-of-the-'80s boogie scene. On the A-side you'll find "E Novamente Mas Que Nada" by Ronaldo Resado, a five-minute chunk of samba-laced boogie sunshine that was originally featured on the artist's eponymous 1979 debut album. While wonderful, it's slightly overshadowed by flipside cut "Ginga", one of the highlights from Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetti's sought-after 1982 full-length (which, incidentally, was recently reissued by Mr Bongo and is well worth checking). Joining the dots between synth-heavy electrofunk, horn-toting disco-funk and languid jazz-funk, the instrumental track is arguably one of the best Brazilian boogie records ever made. Don't sleep.

Here, the track gets reissued as part of Mr Bongo's brilliant Brazil 45s series, alongside his lesser-known - but no less impressive - cover of Edu Lobo's "Ponteio".

Review: Put your hands together... Serial editor Akshin Alizadeh takes Marlena Shaw's iconic heavily-referenced sample (from the live recording of "Woman Of The Ghetto") and lays it softly over a breath-taking lounge-lurking jazz funk groove. All lavish strings, hazy horns, wandering keys and lazy smoky beats, think Nightmares On Wax and you're on the right Balearic boulevard. Get together.

"Witch Doctor" licks with a sleazy guitar hook that oozes up and down break with a raw glee. "The Brew" takes us deeper into the trip with less obvious funk and more hallucinatory details. Review: Norman Connors was a 'go to' producer in the 1970s and '80s for soul and jazz, while holding it down on an impressive array of solo albums. Connors is a drummer first and foremost, and across his rhythm-focussed recordings were the introduction of singers who went on to have their own individual careers such as Jean Carn, Phyllis Hyman and the exceptional Phillip Mitchel - who features on A side 'Once I've Been There'. Flipside track 'Captain Connors' comes as a 12" mix made in 1977 but never released before on vinyl! Previously, the title track was only ever on a promotional release, often changing hands at over 100 quid a time - demand is high on this special release on the original imprint, cop it while you can!

Review: Hugely influential funk business live and direct from 1969. Sampled by everyone from Timberlake to Schooly D, all eyes (and ears) are on the epic fly-by drum breaks while the minimal guitar and bass provide a sturdy backbone for the stickman to do his thing. Peppered with encouraging chatter from bandleader Bo, these are blueprint funk jams that will never ever date. A collection isn't complete with this.

Smooth, subtle and jazzier than a teacher's tie, "Pushin' Weight" rolls and wriggles with a signature slippery Soopasoul funk groove coated with emphatic, cinematic horns. Review: What a trip it's been for The Allergies; rolling from one killer album to the next, funk is flying from their HQ at a rate of knots. Here are two fine examples from their last LP Push On, both featuring their long-time friend and MC from Andy Cooper. Best known for his witty wordplay and character on Ugly Duckling records, here Andy gets to show off both sides to his expansive flow; "Main Event" is a chubby disco groove laced with mountains of funk, creating space for Andy's laidback-but-hypey charm. In perfect contrast "Buzzsaw" is a much sweatier funk jam allowing Cooper to get rapid and tongue-twisty in a way that only he knows how. Keep on pushing...

Review: Damn fine UK funk of the rawest, freshest order, rising London troupe King Rooster lay down two scorching and authentic jams. "Gator Jerky" is full of Louisianan flavour and meat. Swampy, driving, and relentless, it's a full-on instrumental gumbo. Vocalist Florelie Escano joins the party for the equally forthright and sweaty "Ain't Got Time For That". Three minute power punches with that serious live feel to the recordings, King Rooster are in this for the long run.

Review: Latin reissue specialists Raroraro (AKA Rare Latin) return to action with another double dose of devilishly hard to find goodness. On the A-side you'll find Bobby Valentin's "Use It Before You Lose It", a seminal boogaloo cut first featured on the artist's 1968 album Let's Turn On. Full of his impassioned vocals, fuzzy horns and authentic, Tito Puente-influenced rhythms, the song has lost none of its power or panache in the 48 years that have passed since it was recorded. Arguably even better is Mongo Santamaria's flipside cover of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" - a brilliant interpretation from 1970 that sounds like an Afro-Cuban jazz take on Spanky Wilson's infamous soul re-make.

Review: Serious funk fire from the brothers Carbo right here. "Fox In A Mini Skirt" hits hard with a sweaty northern soul feel. Fresh from 68, it's all about the big band builds, ballsy backing vocals and sense of momentum that still kicks just has hard today. "Bad Luck" on the B sees Hank going it solo on the previously super-rare "Bad Luck" that's much sleazier and blues-based and stripped back. Both stone cold cuts, the only misfortune here would be for you to sleep on this.

Review: Ahead of Paul David Gillman's album on Sacred Rhythm, Claussell takes the time to present two celebratory takes on two stone cold fusion classics. The Latin keys, trembling organs and emphatic harmonies of Brian Auger's "Whenever You're Ready" are subtly charged with Joe's signature percussive magic, creating a sense of momentum that refuses to detract from the original magic while Wycoff's cult gospel-tinged funk "Come To My World" reminds us of his work on Stevie's legendary Songs In The Key Of Life. Subtly amplified and extended, Claussell has blessed us with an ultimate end-of-night gem right here.

The title track builds on their more cosmic work with frantic guitar flashes and horn cries over a languid moonlit bed creating sudden moments of tension, release. With years on the live circuit throughout the 70s, this was the only 45" they ever cut by boy is it gem; "By My Side" is a powerful piece of soul enriched by warm production, big instrumentation and of course Barbara Love's gutsy, honest vocals. Review: Congolese musician Kiala Nzavotunga is something of an unheralded hero of the Afrobeat scene. Since deciding to visit Nigeria in the early 1970s he's played with many legendary figures and bands, including Fela Kuti, and famously founded one Europe's first Afrobeat band, Ghettoblaster. Now based in Japan, Afroblaster is his latest musical endeavour, and this is the outfit's debut single. A-side "Sorrow, Tears & Blood" offers a contemporary update of the Fela Kuti/Africa '70 sound, with a straighter 4/4 rhythm that should appeal to disco and house fans as well as Afrobeat enthusiasts. On the flip, "Dear Blood" offers a more traditional take on the style, with Kiala's vocal riding punchy horns, flanged funk guitars and a Tony Allen style drumbeat.

They've apparently spent much of the last 12 months working with Ethiopian musicians, with the fruits of their collaborative labours due for release over a series of tidy 7" singles. This one sees them working with singer and poet Demisu Belete, whose superb vocals rise above the band's brilliant, laidback Afrobeat backing on A-side "Alem". The flipside "Dub Alem" goes even further, incorporating traditional instrumentation from the Adyabo Ensemble on a superb chunk of "Ethio-Dub" that fuses that past and present in fine style.

Review: New Orleans nine-piece, The Hot 8 Brass Band, return to their breakthrough track. Arguably one of the best Marvin Gaye covers in the history of versions, Tru Thoughts have commissioned a brace of contemporisations and pressed them limited edition gold vinyl: J Felix adds a light-footed P-funk bedrock, Ibibio Sound Machine add a dubby weight to the drums, light synths and a cheeky guitar lick, Maddslinky lays down a straight up house strut, Werkha gets his jazzy shuffle on while Jonny Faith twists up a little Jamaican flavour with a dancehall beat and light skanks. Sexual.
