Review: Longstanding editor / remixer / mysteryman artiste, freaky MF steps up to Wah Wah 45s Dubplate division with two straight up classical scorchers: Dionne's slow strolling Bacharach classic gets a warm deep house pump while Simone's mozzy-tweaking cult classic is given a superb psychedelic overhaul that utilises the original's drums with raw cosmic power. No filters required.

  2. The Armada Orchestra - "For The Love Of Money" (Danny Krivit edit) (5:47)
Review: Ten years deep and these edit still pop... Krivit takes everything that rocks and pops on Orgone's cover of The Beginning Of The End's seminal "Funky Nassau", extends it, applies the breaks and turns it inside out. It genuinely can't fail. The very same can be said for his take on Armada Orchestra's cover of Gamble & Huff's O'Jays smash "For The Love Of Money". Focusing in on the instrumentation and slinkiness of the groove, Krivit is a true edit master.

Review: Singer, songwriter, actor, legend: Roy Hytower's Doktu Rhute Muuzic project pays homage to his roots (literally - his father was a herb doctor) his beliefs and his pure skills. A story teller with a strong, smoky bluesy twang and wide range over two sides he paints a big picture; "I'm In Your Corner" has a great Stax style sleazy funk with its tight looseness and brilliantly timed horn section. "Tip Jar", meanwhile, is a much slower jam that rolls with a lolloping groove and a destitute tale that sucks you in with the similar techniques employed by the one and only Mr Brown. Yeah it's that good.

  1. The Fugitives/Archie - "Funky You" (2:18)
  2. The Fugitives/Scottie - "Love Come Down" (3:30)
Review: When it comes to reissuing vintage soul and funk, Germany's Tramp label is second to none. For them, a new week means a new beauty to reissue, and this particular week in October is no different; in fact, this magnetic little 7" is fabulous in every way. First up is 1971's "Funky You" by The Fugitives and Archie, a group who only released a handful of EPs under that moniker, but whose most famous tune is here for you to own, and cause serious levels of angst among the collectors (as you can imagine, the original is rather hard to find). On the flip, the same outfit team up with Scottie for a more classic, sensual love ballad called "Love Come Down", the sort of song which makes your head turn and spin to ask the DJ: "mate, what's that!?".

Review: Tramp Records is one of Germany's tiniest (in their own words!) but funkiest labels who release new bands, but also re-issue quality rare funk, soul and jazz too. This time around they present us with City News for some truly authentic porn-funk soul vibes that you would honestly be convinced were from the early seventies in the vein of Hot Chocolate or Ramp like on the tremendous A side "Bustin' Up". On the flip we've got "Chan The Man" a kung-fu fightin' hoe down aboard the soul train express.

Review: Soul Tribe celebrate the epic legacy of Chess subsidiary Argo with two of the label's many outstanding soul burners. Etta's big swing sauce-pot number takes pride of place with all 55 years of sultry devotion still deeply embedded into the recording. Banks' slightly lesser known pastoral ballad sets up camp on the B. Lilting and lolloping with horseback storytelling, it's the perfect foil both musically and narratively.

Review: With their first 45 selling out in under one week, Bristol troupe Mohawkestra are doing all the right things in all the right places. Especially our ears. Now loading up their second funk 45 bullet, it's likely to be just as successful... Big Hammond-led funk all the way, "I Feel Free" has the frenzy of The Meters but the fire of the Mohawkes while "Growler" does anything but growl - swinging with a fizzy lead line and heavy string strums, there's a train-like momentum that refuses to quit until the very last break. Heavenly.

  1. Our Love Will Never Falter (2:38)
  2. From This Day On (2:40)
Review: Record Shack's latest on-point reissue comes from the sadly departed Edwin Bocage, better known to soul aficionados as Eddie Bo. Superb A-side "Our Love Will Never Falter" originally appeared on the obscure New Orleans imprint Blue Jay some time in the early-to-mid 1960s. It's a classic example of Louisiana soul from the period, with Bocage providing a headline-grabbing vocal performance over a horn-heavy, dancefloor-friendly backing track. Flipside "From This Day On" may be more of a heartfelt ballad in the classic soul mode, but it's similarly inspired. Copies of the original 1966 7" are pretty hard to come by these days - and, naturally, rather expensive - so don't miss this opportunity to own one of Bo's finest moments.

His debut release "Zota Yinne" in 2014 has already become a collectors item. On this release, Oho is joined by the all female choir group Sounds of Joy, comprised of Lizzy Amaliyenga, Patricia Adongo and Florence Adooni. On the A side, we have the uplifting and soulful vibes of "Mam Yinne Wa" featuring some wonderful wind and string instrument passages. On the flip is the reggae influenced swagger of "Yu Ya Yumma".

They are, in their own words "continuing to dig, discover, remix & remaster and re-release quality Philadelphia funk & soul from the Phil L.A. of Soul archives." "Listen To Your Mama" has been a highly sought after collectors classic for quite a while. This version in fact having the never-before released instrumental B side. Review: The sounds of Johnny! have played a significant part in the popularity of afro beat over the last fifteen years. Quietly and tastefully, JJ Whitefield has been responsible for releasing a plethora of Ghanaian rock, including the country's most recent sensations, the incredibly talented Ebo Taylor. Since the 90s, this guys hasn't stopped releasing heat for a single minute, and his collaboration with Now Again has been one of the best and most consistent partnerships of the last decade. Along with Ebo Taylor, his on Henry, and percussionist-singer, Eric Owusu, Whitefield's Johnny! can do absolutely now wrong and, if this new single "Ago" is anything to go by, these guys are among the few making quality afro rock in the present day. The tune is rugged, lo-fi and a little hazy, bringing together elements of Zamrock and psych in the best possible way; there's also an instrumental for you on the flip.

  4. Chimbita Theme (3:29)
Review: These days, it's hard to find contemporary artists making real, unadulterated psych-funk. Combo Chimbita are one such outfit; they're masters of their genre, and they have a real skill for amalgamating the best of South American and African rock. El Corredor De Jaguar comes out courtesy of Names You Can Trust, and its four sublime tunes are a true breath of fresh air among so much sub-standard, 70s rip-offs. "Pajaro" sets the scene with a cool, moody bass and intricate percussion knots, and "Tamborero" picks up the tempo and injects a glorious wave of Latino suaveness into the track's vocals. Our favourite piece has to be "Frio Severo", though, with its stepping drums and hummable guitar hook, but "Chimbita Theme" does a wonderful job of closing this stupendous 7" off with a wild and psychedelic infusion of guitars and tribal drumming. Highly recommended!

  1. Breakplus - "Le Train Enflamme" (7:56)
  2. Mr Beatnick - "Achilles Heel" (5:30)
Review: Mr Beatnick's Mythstery label returns with 002 after an excellent first outing from Breakplus, whose 12" was vey much to our desire when it dropped late last year. The two actually go head-to-head on this 12" and, much like the twisted disco of artists like Black Devil Disco Club, this is some straight-up sexy gear, disjointed and unadulterated for maximum pleasure. Breakplus' weirdo boogie on "Le Train Inflamme" is our kinda joint, the sort of fuming, acid-laced glitz that'll appeal to the disco-heads and house-nerds alike; Mr Beatnick's "Achilles Heel" is just as eerie and roughed-up, but the vibe on here is darker, moodier, and drenched in a deep electronic edge. Very highly recommended.

Review: Juno exclusive Mukatsuku Records official repress on white vinyl and new labels to 300 hand-numbered copies.1980's "Use My Body" by Mavis John is a highly coveted piece of exotic funk, the sort of tune your eyeballs pop out to when you find it in a second-hand bin in some dark basement. However, we live in the real world and that stuff doesn't happen; what does happen is the Mukatsuku label saving you the trouble and reissuing it. Label boss Nik Weston gives his own edit of the tune here, and he transforms an already wonderful piece of soulful dance into an even more powerful DJ weapon - it's an absolute stunner and you can tell why the original has been picking up 3 figures on the second hand market. On the B-side, Weston teams up with Benton for a steel-pan excursion called "Riviera Jam (Tropical Storm Steel Panpella mix)", a superb addition to this beast of a 7". As played by Bradley Zero on NTS plus Red Greg,Gilles Peterson & Admin

Review: Not just a beautiful compliment to pay someone special, but a hugely influential record that inspired Floating Points' now legendary Plastic People parties, too... A super obscure and expensive one at that. Now re-issued on Floating Points' own Melodies imprint - across three 45s - the Detroit band get full exposure with the deliciously funky main track enjoying two versions before dipping into the softer, more pastoral charms of "I Feel Like Dancing" and the string-led swoon festival, "Theme For Someone Special". We close on two contrasting grooves; an earthy ballad ("Trust Me") and a Whitfield & Strong style funk instrumental ("Dance Awhile"). Cheers Sam!

Review: David Hanke has only just started releasing music under the Dem Juju Poets moniker, and already he's managed to instil a very clear direction in terms of sound aesthetic and creative direction. This new two-tracker for the emergent Matasuna label is full of joie de vivre, with the opening tune "Barabara" managing to blend the best elements of funk, high-life, afrobeat, and generally coming up with a tune that's just so damn easy to dance to. "People's Republic", the flipside track, is a horn-led groover, another slice of worldly funk back by a bumpy, positive tribalistic tone that we instantly associate to the dance floor. Excellent stuff - let's keep it coming!

Highlights include Sampology adding a warm thump and loopy twist to "Strawberry Fields" (while keeping the sitar shining), Two Dee switching up "Rabbit Hole" into a Miami bass style breakbeat serving session and the misty, spooked out wooden leg skank on "Kojak The Frog". Mystical, faithful, moorish.

Although they've never stopped recording - or touring, for that matter - this outing on Kept Records is their first release for two years. A-side "La Raza" is a breezy but bass-heavy affair, with multi-lingual rap vocals and tight turntable scratches riding a dubbed-out, funk-fuelled hip-hop groove. The band's long-held Latin influences come to the fore once more on flipside "Abrabeesh", which boasts some seriously tasty horn parts, fluid vibraphone solos and brilliant drum work. Both tracks are musically expansive, and amongst the best things they've done to date.

Vinyl fans sore at the lack of the album in their preferred format will find consolation in the fact two gleaming highlights now feature on this 45 for Jalapeno. Review: Dusty-fingered break-digger J Rocc can always be relied upon to deliver the goods, especially when it comes to the tasty Funky President Edits series. Informed by his impeccable turntablist skills, both versions of "Break Yo Self" offer a whirlwind trip through scorching, floor-friendly funk and rock breaks, with a wide range of classic and little-known samples thrown in for good measure. The A-side "Breakbeat Lenny Tribute" version begins with some Bob James style organ fluidity, before ramping up the energy levels via a string of killer drum hooks. If anything, the flipside "Breakbeat Lou Tribute" is even more party-friendly, with J-Rocc quickly running through almost everything in his box of tricks. In other words, it's a cut-up masterclass.

Review: Dam Funk and Nite Jewel first joined forces way back in 2009 for what most thought was a one-off collaboration. Here, they're reunited once more for their first joint 12" release. Nite-Funk is every bit as special as you'd expect, taking the best of both artists' musical repertoire - Dam Funk's authentic '80s synth-soul, and Nite-Funk's sparkling, deep analogue synth-pop - and turning them into something new and involving. The EP boasts vocal and instrumental versions of four tracks: the Michael Jackson style '80s soul-pop of "Let Me Be Me", the heartfelt, late night radio slow jam "Love X2", the sax-laden, Sade-goes-soulful house flex of "U Can Make Me", and the deliciously dreamy "Don't Play Games".

Review: The US' Funk Night Records is pushing some serious heat as of late, especially given the fact that it's managing to find some real horsepower amid the contemporary generation of funk and soul - a rarity to be appreciated and recognised, these days. Bishop Smith is joined by The Sensational Disciples band to deliver "Bumps In The Road", a gloriously soulful song that gives new meaning to the term 'raw'; this might well be the most seductive piece of music we have heard this year and, if that sounds like an exaggeration, then you might just have to check it out for yourself. The instrumental, is naturally as wonderful, but the vocals on the A-side have the power to remain imprinted in your mind for days and days. This is very warmly recommended.

Review: Serial alias addict, Kris Holmes returns with a double side of split personality: The Disciples is a rough, bluesy layered piece of slo-mo surf rock where the drums only just keep up and the organs provide heavy soul salvation. "He Spoke" shows Kris on much more of an African inspired trip. Similarly hefty organs power the main groove but there's more uplift in the riff and instrumentation. Insatiable.

  1. You Got It Right (2:35)
  2. Solar Blast (3:02)
Review: Misha Panfilov is a man of many talents. Not only is the Estonian producer an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, but he's also something of a sonic magpie. To date, his fuzzy musical output has included revivalist jazz-funk, space-age analogue electronica, and bossanova inspired easy listening. His core sound, though, remains funk, which he mostly explores on the Misha Panfilov Sound Combo releases. "You Got It Right" is typically psychedelic, with Panfilov peppering a low-slung groove with all manner of musical solos and Eastern-influenced chants. The hallucinatory dancefloor fun continues on the flip, where the constantly rising "Solar Blast" - all dusty analogue synths, wavy flute solos and killer funk breaks - cuts an impressively tipsy figure.

  1. Lamine (4:05)
  2. Police Woman (2:32)
  3. Kunming Beats (1:48)
Review: The latest artist to join Dinked's roster of soul and funk obsessives is DJ D.S.K, a China-based Brit who grew up cutting and scratching hip-hop and old funk breaks. The three tracks showcased here seem to be built around samples from tasty old funk bombs, from cut-up and rearranged breaks, to punchy horn lines and low-slung basslines. Lead cut "Lamine" is particularly potent, featuring as it does DJ-friendly drum breaks, jangling soul guitars, rubbery bass and a floor-friendly rhythm track. Flip for the looser, electric piano-heavy dancefloor strut of "Police Woman", and the dusty, head-nodding, trumpet-laden hip-hop bounce of "Kumming Beats" (and, yes, it's a sneaky cut-up of an old James Brown tune).

  4. Jay Airiness - "Two Of Us" (5:40)
Review: DJ Apt-One dons his hairiest mane for more roaring Lion edits. And this time he's brought company. Fresh from collaborating with Soul Clap, here we find him in fine funk fettle with two more precision dug obscurities: "Keep On Hangin' On" is classic loopy filtered disco house finesse while "Finally" takes us deep into electro boogie heaven. Supamomo Jay Airiness takes the B for two equally XL party-sized joints: "Funky Situation" is a total carnival of percussion and slapbass magic while "Two Of Us" is all about the bumper-busting disco funk. Divine.
