Review: New Orleans nine-piece, The Hot 8 Brass Band, return to their breakthrough track. Arguably one of the best Marvin Gaye covers in the history of versions, Tru Thoughts have commissioned a brace of contemporisations and pressed them limited edition gold vinyl: J Felix adds a light-footed P-funk bedrock, Ibibio Sound Machine add a dubby weight to the drums, light synths and a cheeky guitar lick, Maddslinky lays down a straight up house strut, Werkha gets his jazzy shuffle on while Jonny Faith twists up a little Jamaican flavour with a dancehall beat and light skanks. Sexual.

  1. Wizzdom - "Free Bass" (7:28)
  2. Jimmy Bo Horn - "Is It In" (3:53)
  3. Herman Kelly - "Life A Refreshing Love" (6:39)
Review: TK Disco flashbacks are always welcome at Juno HQ: Here we find some of the label's later cuts in the form two 1980s jams: Wizzdom's 1980 bass-slapping, face-shaking boogie jam "Free Bass" and the funkier, more disco-aligned (and brilliantly titled) "Is It In". Completing the release is Herman Kelly & Life's "A Refreshing Love". Not originally released on TK, it landed on Electric Cat in 1978, but it provides sweet closure and context. Stripping back the groove and energy, it's a sublime sunny side soul piece that's still played heavily by DJs such as Scrimshire, Ash Walker and Andrew Ashong. Beautiful.

  2. Do It Again (4:51)
Review: Pure brass bedlam from the long-standing, Grammy-winning, heavy-hitting Rebirth Brass Band: "I Like It Like That" and "Do It Again" are taken from the band's hugely successful Rebirth Of New Orleans album and have never seen the light of 45" before... Until now. The former is hotter than a Mardi in July with a party-rearing hook you'll be humming into the 20s. The latter takes more street corner momentum as the band put down their horns and chant like their lives depends on it. It doesn't get more powerful than this. Super limited too - only 500 copies to be pressed.

Review: Following exceptional reissues from Gloria Barnes and Africano, the currently spotless soul excavators Sunset continue with another outstanding reissue. Last pressed in 1973, this was the Michigan funk troupe's only 45" and has been known to pass hands for several hundred in the last few years. Big breezy soul with jazz-tinged sweeping backing harmonies and slick guitar work from the band's lynchpin Michael Lewis, it's criminal that this was the band's only recording.

Review: New kids on the reissue block, New Zealand's Strangelove Music are off to a flying start with this beautiful 1983 art pop record from subversive chanteuse Lena D'Agua. "Jardim Zoologico" fuses electro boogie with Afrofunk with healthy measures of cosmic polish while "Tao" is a straight up Balearic gem that sparkles with sentiment and horizontal soul. Only ever released on Portuguese label Valentim De Carvalho, this reissue is over 30 years overdue.

Review: The Voices Of East Harlem were an ensemble of vocalists who for Just Sunshine Records recorded two albums under the direction of Leroy Hutson and Curtis Mayfield. "Cashing In" is one of their most classic songs, a highly sought after track on original 7" fetches a small fortune on the collectors market. First recorded and released in 1973, it has all the hallmarks of a Leroy Hutson composition and an established audience that crosses the boundaries of northern, crossover and modern soul. The song is coupled here with "Take A Stand', another highly regarded and sought after modern soul room dance floor tracks, never previously released on 7" single until now

Review: Serious funk fire from the brothers Carbo right here. "Fox In A Mini Skirt" hits hard with a sweaty northern soul feel. Fresh from 68, it's all about the big band builds, ballsy backing vocals and sense of momentum that still kicks just has hard today. "Bad Luck" on the B sees Hank going it solo on the previously super-rare "Bad Luck" that's much sleazier and blues-based and stripped back. Both stone cold cuts, the only misfortune here would be for you to sleep on this.

  1. Just Brothers - "Honey" (2:49)
  2. Apollo Studio Band - "Honkey Tonk Woman" (instrumental) (2:39)
Review: For their latest deep dive into the world of obscure funk, Vienna's Record Shack has decided to reissue two hard-to-find gems from the Just Brothers and Apollo Studio Band. The former's "Honey" was recorded in the 1970s but first released in 2001. Full of their trademark surf style guitars, stomping Northern Soul style beats and dreamy, psychedelic era vocals, it remains one of the outfit's greatest tracks. On the reverse you'll find the thrillingly fuzzy "Honky Tonk Woman (Instrumental)" by the Apollo Studio Band. We found next to no information about the outfit online, suggesting the track was taken from a lauded, private press release. Either way, it's a prime chunk of Northern Soul style instrumental fuzziness that's worth the admission price alone.

Review: Latin reissue specialists Raroraro (AKA Rare Latin) return to action with another double dose of devilishly hard to find goodness. On the A-side you'll find Bobby Valentin's "Use It Before You Lose It", a seminal boogaloo cut first featured on the artist's 1968 album Let's Turn On. Full of his impassioned vocals, fuzzy horns and authentic, Tito Puente-influenced rhythms, the song has lost none of its power or panache in the 48 years that have passed since it was recorded. Arguably even better is Mongo Santamaria's flipside cover of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" - a brilliant interpretation from 1970 that sounds like an Afro-Cuban jazz take on Spanky Wilson's infamous soul re-make.

Two sides, one super-tight groove; the original pressings of "Ham Hocks & Beans" have fetched a tasty $600 as recently as 2015. Press play and hear why; slinky, soulful and loaded with some serious light-handed breaks, both the vocal-led A-side and instrumental B-side kill it with class.

But it's his work with The JBs that really captures his leadership command and raw funk. "Blow Your Head" is known to all, has been sampled and imitated by all and is loved by all. Review: Damn fine UK funk of the rawest, freshest order, rising London troupe King Rooster lay down two scorching and authentic jams. "Gator Jerky" is full of Louisianan flavour and meat. Swampy, driving, and relentless, it's a full-on instrumental gumbo. Vocalist Florelie Escano joins the party for the equally forthright and sweaty "Ain't Got Time For That". Three minute power punches with that serious live feel to the recordings, King Rooster are in this for the long run.

He kicks off with a Cymande version that's been lurking in his crates for well over a decade. Taking the iconic bassline and stretching the Dickens out of it, it's a kindly reminder of how well Danny understands groove dynamics. Review: If online chatter is to be believed, this tasty 7" from Floating Points' Melodies label is one of the most keenly anticipated disco releases of the year. For starters, the A-side boasts an obscure (but in demand) solo production from Manhattan Transfer keyboardist Yaron Gershovsky. "Disco Baby" is a prime chunk of jaunty, jazz-funk influenced disco-funk, the keyboardist's own jammed-out riffs and solos taking pride of place in the mix alongside punchy horns and a lolloping groove. Arguably even better, though, is Floating Points and Red Greg's flipside re-edit, which plays around with the original version's all-too-short drum break before letting the synths, keys and horns really sparkle.

Philou and Villy are both members of this project, the project brings artists from Africa & African Diaspora together. The Alkebulan Project is on a mission to change the perception of Africa an it's citizens. Nigerian artist Villy and his group "Villy & The Xtreme Volumes" are on a mission to educate Africans with their message calling for a revolution in Africa, politically and socially in all aspects. Philou has a combination of Congolese, Nigerian and Sierra Leonean heritage and it is in these roots that he has built his sound. His passion for the continent of his ancestors is fervent and his projects are challenging commonly held preconceptions about Africa. His goal is to challenge negative stereotypes, by making African cultures more approachable through music. Much love for Rudy Asibey for founding The Alkebulan Project and bringing the artists together and many thanks to Marcel Vogel for giving us the opportunity to tell our story through."

Raw, frazzled and just a little garage in its rough and ready sheen, "Sneaker Collector" hits with a meaty swashbuckling feel while "African Spy" is a slower, slight cosmic jam where the wah wah guitars snake around a loose almost jazzy break. Watch out for the key change and try to keep up.

Moreover, the imprint has called upon the services of Capriccio, Magnant & Associates, a collective of highly experiences funk and soul musicians from America's Bay Area who have come through with 2 kick-ass versions of "Local Government Victory", the sort of funky, wayward groove that'll get the whole place nodding their heads by the second roll of the chorus. Review: Afrobeat alert right here, for even the most cynical of Fela believers - no lie! Trombonist Toli Nameless leads this magnificent EP, out through the fledgling Kooyman Records, in what is actually a sort of reissue... or rather an unearthing of some pretty special material that was recorded in the NYC area around about 2003. In what was a series of infamous live performances back then, these recordings has gained fame in the underground name and so this must be a rather special event for anyone whose been longing for their mystical charm until now. "See Line" is the most energetic of the trio, all guns blazing on the percussion front and vocal voodoo, while "Talk Da Shit" provides your more typical Afro funk, except that its way sexier thanks to Toli's brass vibes. The instrumental dub to "Def Ears", however, is the more special of the three and the one to bring out that lovely, heartical bounce that we all yearn for. A magnificent EP. Highly recommended!

Often bootlegged, never bettered, Dope brought every element popping and locking into the future. Not reissued since its release three years ago, Dope's label Kay Dee have sneaked out 150 of each 45". "Gangbusters" is a midnight creeper (with just a little 80s daftness) while "Meetings" remains as intense and cynical as it was 34 years ago. Masterful.

Leading the charge has been the Dusty Donuts label and a group of dusty-fingered producers including Jim Sharp. Here, the latter briefly breaks free of the imprint to deliver two more tried-and-tested jams that blend classic drum breaks and instrumental loops with similarly well-loved hip-hop acapellas. A-side "Gangsta Walk" is the one for us, featuring as it does bongo-laden breaks tailor-made for doubling up, the swirling strings of a much-loved Quantic Soul Orchestra favourite , and Coolio. In other words, it's a tasteful and on-point mash-up that will get the dancefloor moving.

Review: Bristol outfit the Allergies has enjoyed a hugely successful year so far, releasing a string of killer funk and soul sevens on Jalepeno Records. Astonishingly, "Entitled To That" could be their biggest single yet. Certainly, the title track is superb; a revivalist Northern Soul style stomper full of hazy horns, fuzzy guitars, sweaty drums and the kind of strong, empowered vocal that recalls some of soul music's greatest female singers. Wisely, there's a slightly more laidback feel about flipside "Get Down on You", where crunchy Clavinet lines wrap themselves around a snappy funk breakbeat. It's a fine tune, of course, but pales in comparison to the killer A-side. Regardless, this should be an essential purchase for funk DJs.

Review: Soul collectors have long considered Melvin Brown and James Matthews' "Love Stormy Weather" to be a slept-on classic. Initially released (and largely ignored) in 1976, it sits somewhere between the acoustic soul of Terry Callier, the dewy-eyed goodness of Rotary Connection, and the sumptuous jazz-funk that was all the rage in the late 1970s. Don't take our word for it, though: check out the sound clips for yourself. On the flipside you'll find a previously unheard gem from the duo: the impassioned, tear-jerking torch song "Crying For Your Love". Naturally it's a little fuzzy round the edges (the masters were probably sat in someone's loft for 30-odd years), but still sounds powerful and emotional.

Review: Outside of record collecting circles, few have heard of Axis's 1984 cut "Silver Satin" - though given that it was only ever released as a private press single (some 200 or so copies were apparently pressed), that's hardly surprising. Here, new record label Ice City gives it the reissue treatment. The track is a brilliantly spacey chunk of slap-bass propelled, P-funk era boogie full of eyes closed guitar solos, impassioned vocals and swirling synthesizer chords. On the flipside you'll find a previously unreleased track, "Runaway Love", which was written, produced and performed by main main Byron Bordeaux in 1986. Closer to '80s soul but with guitars and bass reminiscent of electrofunk-era jazz-funk jams, it's almost better than the A-side, and that's saying something. In other words, this is an essential reissue.

Review: Like many producers whose careers began during the "post dubstep" era, Adam "Arkist" Gazia has spent much of his career sidestepping easy categorization. Even so, few would have expected his latest EP - the brilliantly titled Astrocat - to be a colourful, synth-heavy homage to the P-Funk era. Opener "Small Talk", featuring Mr Woodnote rocking the talkbox, is so authentic-sounding that it could be a long lost Funkadelic recording. The same could be said of "Astrocat", whose fuzzy synths, talkbox vocals and stuttering machine drums would make Roger Troutman purr. Also worth a mention are the slap bass-propelled boogie funk of "Only" and "Nightflare", a sweet chunk of laidback, instrumental electrofunk. Appleblim's bonus remix of the latter - dubby, intergalactic, spacey and melodious, is also superb.

Review: Timmy Thomas, sometimes known as The Magician, frequently regarded as one of the most sampled men beyond the Brown franchise, he's been referenced by everyone from Drake to Dilla to MC Hammer. Here we find two of his most well known cuts, both taken from his 1972 album, Why Can't We Live Together. There's a wry cosmic sheen weaving and shimmering in the background of the soaking wet Afrofunk groove of "Africano" while the keys of "Why Can't We Live Together" instantly hit with a soul you've heard, felt and loved in so many contexts. Certified classic.
