  1. The Time Is Right (3:23)
  2. Feeling Funky (3:55)
Review: If this fine 7" is anything to go by, the crate digging and detective skills of Athens of the North founder Euan Fryer are as sharp as ever. The two tracks featured here originally appeared on a private press single that currently changes hands for large sums online. Fryer manager to track down the original writer/producer, Chicago-based George Riviera, who not only have his blessing to the reissue, but also sent over the master tapes. Stylistically, A-side "The Time is Right" sits somewhere between Latin soul, jazz-funk and sumptuous downtempo disco, with blue-eyed soul vocals and subtle vibraphone solos rising above superb had percussion. Fipside "Feelin' Funky" is a more up-tempo affair: an undulating chunk of jazz-funk/disco fusion laden with neat musical touches.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: With the Grupo Almendra album fresh out of the gates, Italian label Best Records jump right back in with a crucial slice of disco funk from noted arranger, producer and karate expert Pino Presti. "You Know The Way" is a slinky party starter with on-point slap bass, lively brass and sumptuous Philly strings of the highest order. As if the original wasn't funky enough, the B-side features a disco remix from dearly departed New York disco legend Tee Scott, who subtly buffs up the dancefloor potential of the track to devastating effect.

  2. Midnight Mirrors (5:07)
Review: Having come to the fore with a pair of boogie slammers on the Cosmic Chronic label, Mickey De Grand IV's Psychic Mirrors outfit ascend to parent operation People's Potential Unlimited with the excellent Charlene. Allegedly recorded with the help of a ten piece live band, both the title track and "Midnight Mirrors" are evocative of the sort of modern lo-fi funk that PPU corners the market in these days. Bringing the Miami heat, "Charlene" is a veritable dancefloor bomb, with a rugged boogie bassline the sort of flirtatious element that hips can't say no to. B Side cut "Midnight Mirrors" is more of a late night number with some exquisite synth work. Props to PPU!

Cat: FSJ 108. Rel: 31 Jul 17
  1. I Like It Like That (4:35)
  2. Do It Again (4:51)
Review: Pure brass bedlam from the long-standing, Grammy-winning, heavy-hitting Rebirth Brass Band: "I Like It Like That" and "Do It Again" are taken from the band's hugely successful Rebirth Of New Orleans album and have never seen the light of 45" before... Until now. The former is hotter than a Mardi in July with a party-rearing hook you'll be humming into the 20s. The latter takes more street corner momentum as the band put down their horns and chant like their lives depends on it. It doesn't get more powerful than this. Super limited too - only 500 copies to be pressed.

  1. Ronaldo Reseda - "E Novamente Mas Que Nada" (5:19)
  2. Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti - "Ginga" (2:57)
Review: The 65th volume in Mr Bongo's admirable Brazil 45s series shines a light on Rio De Janeiro's turn-of-the-'80s boogie scene. On the A-side you'll find "E Novamente Mas Que Nada" by Ronaldo Resado, a five-minute chunk of samba-laced boogie sunshine that was originally featured on the artist's eponymous 1979 debut album. While wonderful, it's slightly overshadowed by flipside cut "Ginga", one of the highlights from Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetti's sought-after 1982 full-length (which, incidentally, was recently reissued by Mr Bongo and is well worth checking). Joining the dots between synth-heavy electrofunk, horn-toting disco-funk and languid jazz-funk, the instrumental track is arguably one of the best Brazilian boogie records ever made. Don't sleep.

  1. Gangsta Walk (Jim Sharp edit) (4:11)
  2. Cave In (Jim Sharp mix) (3:39)
Review: Over the last couple of years, there's been a noticeable rise in the number of 7" singles featuring on DJ-friendly re-edits of break-heavy funk and soul favourites. Leading the charge has been the Dusty Donuts label and a group of dusty-fingered producers including Jim Sharp. Here, the latter briefly breaks free of the imprint to deliver two more tried-and-tested jams that blend classic drum breaks and instrumental loops with similarly well-loved hip-hop acapellas. A-side "Gangsta Walk" is the one for us, featuring as it does bongo-laden breaks tailor-made for doubling up, the swirling strings of a much-loved Quantic Soul Orchestra favourite , and Coolio. In other words, it's a tasteful and on-point mash-up that will get the dancefloor moving.

Review: Put your hands together... Serial editor Akshin Alizadeh takes Marlena Shaw's iconic heavily-referenced sample (from the live recording of "Woman Of The Ghetto") and lays it softly over a breath-taking lounge-lurking jazz funk groove. All lavish strings, hazy horns, wandering keys and lazy smoky beats, think Nightmares On Wax and you're on the right Balearic boulevard. Get together.

Cat: BK 03. Rel: 21 Aug 17
  1. Keep You Burning (vocal) (4:18)
  2. Keep You Burning (Mini Disco version) (4:01)
Review: If you want to take a moment to stare in open-mouthed astonishment, have a quick look at how much original copies of the Shider Family Band's "Keep You Burning" sell for online (clue: it's somewhere between L500 and a grand). It was the combo's one and only 7" single and has long been regarded as a must-have amongst boogie-era disco collectors. It's certainly a brilliant record: the A-side "Vocal" is a near perfect fusion of breezy, soulful, post-disco goodness and tactile jazz-funk. Arguably even better is the dub-style flipside "Instrumental", which offers an opportunity to revel in the band's brilliant musicianship, multi-tracked backing vocals and hazy, eyes-closed solos.

Review: He's back! One of Jalapeno's funkiest party-starters Danny Soopasoul Bennett returns with his first new material in over five years. Smooth, subtle and jazzier than a teacher's tie, "Pushin' Weight" rolls and wriggles with a signature slippery Soopasoul funk groove coated with emphatic, cinematic horns. It sets the scene consummately for the comeback body of work that's guaranteed to follow. Flip for his evergreen northern soul sing-along "Brand Nu" - available for the first time on 45". Review: Timmy Thomas, sometimes known as The Magician, frequently regarded as one of the most sampled men beyond the Brown franchise, he's been referenced by everyone from Drake to Dilla to MC Hammer. Here we find two of his most well known cuts, both taken from his 1972 album, Why Can't We Live Together. There's a wry cosmic sheen weaving and shimmering in the background of the soaking wet Afrofunk groove of "Africano" while the keys of "Why Can't We Live Together" instantly hit with a soul you've heard, felt and loved in so many contexts. Certified classic.

  3. Deaf Ears (instrumental dub) (6:40)
Review: Afrobeat alert right here, for even the most cynical of Fela believers - no lie! Trombonist Toli Nameless leads this magnificent EP, out through the fledgling Kooyman Records, in what is actually a sort of reissue... or rather an unearthing of some pretty special material that was recorded in the NYC area around about 2003. In what was a series of infamous live performances back then, these recordings has gained fame in the underground name and so this must be a rather special event for anyone whose been longing for their mystical charm until now. "See Line" is the most energetic of the trio, all guns blazing on the percussion front and vocal voodoo, while "Talk Da Shit" provides your more typical Afro funk, except that its way sexier thanks to Toli's brass vibes. The instrumental dub to "Def Ears", however, is the more special of the three and the one to bring out that lovely, heartical bounce that we all yearn for. A magnificent EP. Highly recommended!

Review: Another killer issue from the 5 Borough Breaks crew, unearthing yet another classic hip hop anthem rarely seen on 45. Taking it back to 1989, Ultimate Force's "I'm Not Playing" catches a young Diamond D in full flow over a looped blues lick. Famed for its appearance on Shadow & Cut Chemist's "Brainfreeze" mix, the original 45 will set you back a hefty sum. As always, flip it over for the original sample source - step up Blues master Albert King's "Cold Feet".

  1. Bobby Valentin - "Use It Before You Lose It" (3:03)
  2. Mongo Santamaria - "Sunshine Of Your Love" (3:23)
Review: Latin reissue specialists Raroraro (AKA Rare Latin) return to action with another double dose of devilishly hard to find goodness. On the A-side you'll find Bobby Valentin's "Use It Before You Lose It", a seminal boogaloo cut first featured on the artist's 1968 album Let's Turn On. Full of his impassioned vocals, fuzzy horns and authentic, Tito Puente-influenced rhythms, the song has lost none of its power or panache in the 48 years that have passed since it was recorded. Arguably even better is Mongo Santamaria's flipside cover of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" - a brilliant interpretation from 1970 that sounds like an Afro-Cuban jazz take on Spanky Wilson's infamous soul re-make.

Raw, frazzled and just a little garage in its rough and ready sheen, "Sneaker Collector" hits with a meaty swashbuckling feel while "African Spy" is a slower, slight cosmic jam where the wah wah guitars snake around a loose almost jazzy break. Watch out for the key change and try to keep up.

"Cashing In" is one of their most classic songs, a highly sought after track on original 7" fetches a small fortune on the collectors market. First recorded and released in 1973, it has all the hallmarks of a Leroy Hutson composition and an established audience that crosses the boundaries of northern, crossover and modern soul. But it's his work with The JBs that really captures his leadership command and raw funk. "Blow Your Head" is known to all, has been sampled and imitated by all and is loved by all. Review: TK Disco flashbacks are always welcome at Juno HQ: Here we find some of the label's later cuts in the form two 1980s jams: Wizzdom's 1980 bass-slapping, face-shaking boogie jam "Free Bass" and the funkier, more disco-aligned (and brilliantly titled) "Is It In". Completing the release is Herman Kelly & Life's "A Refreshing Love". Not originally released on TK, it landed on Electric Cat in 1978, but it provides sweet closure and context. Stripping back the groove and energy, it's a sublime sunny side soul piece that's still played heavily by DJs such as Scrimshire, Ash Walker and Andrew Ashong. Beautiful.

Two sides, one super-tight groove; the original pressings of "Ham Hocks & Beans" have fetched a tasty $600 as recently as 2015. Review: If online chatter is to be believed, this tasty 7" from Floating Points' Melodies label is one of the most keenly anticipated disco releases of the year. For starters, the A-side boasts an obscure (but in demand) solo production from Manhattan Transfer keyboardist Yaron Gershovsky. "Disco Baby" is a prime chunk of jaunty, jazz-funk influenced disco-funk, the keyboardist's own jammed-out riffs and solos taking pride of place in the mix alongside punchy horns and a lolloping groove. Arguably even better, though, is Floating Points and Red Greg's flipside re-edit, which plays around with the original version's all-too-short drum break before letting the synths, keys and horns really sparkle.

Rawness in every direction; "Funk I Tus" hits and tickles like a Booker T demo (complete with some ace percussion rolls) while "Let The Music Take Your Mind" steps back on the easy beat with more emphasis on freeform synth blasts. Undiluted funk in its purist form; get in the zone today.

Review: The Allergies' debut album introduced the world to the way they effortlessly fuse funk, soul, disco, hip-hop and breaks into dancefloor-ready nuggets of ear candy. Taking classic sounds and reshaping them for the modern age is the signature that won them plaudits across the globe. Not ones to rest on their laurels, it hasn't taken long for them to deliver more of the goods on their second full-length album. As well as taking the successful formula of the first record and expanding on their sound, the band enlisted two giants of underground hip-hop to bless mics on the album as well. After a hugely successful collaboration on their debut LP, once again the dynamic lyricism and production skills of the inimitable Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling) are present and correct in this new collection.

They were just lulling us into a false sense of security before hitting us with a precision range of big soul swingers and dynamite party killers; both "Hold You Close" and "Since You've Been Gone" pop with big beat bangs, "Entitled To That" stamps and sweats like Wigan Pier is still holding the best dances in the country, "Main Event" parps and pumps while long-standing affiliate Andy Cooper reminds us who's boss while "It Won't Be Me" (also with Cooper) is coded with so much horn and guitar powered gusto you could be fooled into thinking Ugly Duckling are back. Yet another triumphant album from one of Jalapeno's most exciting acts.

  1. Stay Up Zimbabwe (7:28)
  2. Ah Wo (Brand New Revolution) (10:01)
Review: For the latest volume in their Ltd Dance Edition series of 12" singles, Analog Africa has decided to mine the back catalogue of Trinidadian Afro-Caribbean fusionist Brother Valentino. On the A-side you'll find sought-after 1978 single "Stay Up Zimbabwe", a passionate plea for change recorded amidst the bloody civil war between Ian Smith's white minority government and the black majority. Musically, it sits somewhere between Afrobeat, soca and disco, with heavy horn lines rising above a killer groove. On the flipside you'll find the equally as impressive "Ah Wo (Brand New Revolution)", a killer 1980 calypso-disco workout laden with jazzy guitar solos, William Onyeabor style Moog lines, extended drum breaks and typically punchy horns.

Review: Last reissued in Brazil over 10 years ago, legendary Brazilian singer Gal Costa's sixth album is a tropicalian odyssey. Reflective, soulful, touching and dynamic, Gal guides us through a sunset story of ballads ("Volta"), bossas ("Milho Verde") blues ("De Maior Importance") and beyond with an all-star troupe of musicians including Gilberto Gil, Arthur Verocai and Dominguinhos. Remastered to a touch and complete with the original cover that was banned by the Brazilian dictatorship at the time, this is the first time India has been reissued with care in decades.
