  1. Mavis John - "Use My Body" (Nik Weston official exclusive edit)
  2. Guy Benton & Nik Weston - "Riviera Jam" (Tropical Storm Steel Panapella mix)
Review: 1980's "Use My Body" by Mavis John is a highly coveted piece of exotic funk, the sort of tune your eyeballs pop out to when you find it in a second-hand bin in some dark basement. However, we live in the real world and that stuff doesn't happen; what does happen is the Mukatsuku label saving you the trouble and reissuing it. Label boss Nik Weston gives his own edit of the tune here, and the London jazz-dance veteran transforms an already wonderful piece of soulful dance into an even more powerful DJ weapon - it's an absolute stunner and you can tell why the original is so pricey. On the B-side, Weston teams up with Guy Benton for a steel-pan excursion called "Riviera Jam (Tropical Storm Steel Panpella mix)", a superb addition to this beast of a 7".

  1. Harrow (3:12)
  2. Nautilus (Hijacked) (3:31)
Review: Breakdown Brass are more of a collective than a band. These magnetic individuals have all been strumming and trumpeting for decades, the majority being made up of old-school New Yorkers with a passion for soul, funk and brass instruments. They happen to land on Kept Records, which is a fitting home to their prophetic strain of instrumental brass music, and "Harrow" is a true beast of the slo-mo, laid-back, slap-up soul type - one for the Mustang and Wayfarers. "Nautilus (Hijacked)" is a little more uptempo and livelier around both the percussion and the horns, but Breakdown Brass manage to retain that cool, breezy feel throughout.

Review: Periplo marks the solo debut of Early Sounds Recordings co-founder Pellegrino S. Snichelotto, following occasional contributions to other material from the label's extended family of artists. Interestingly, the six-track set shares some stylistic similarities with friends' Nu Guinea's Tony Allen Experiments mini-album, chiefly the producer's delay and reverb-laden fusion of live instruments and vintage analogue hardware. Stylistically, most of the tracks sit somewhere between jazz-funk, cosmic funk, and the kind of melodious Afro-Cosmic fare that was once a staple of Northern Italy's eccentric club scene. There's plenty of hazy musical humidity to enoy, too, with the impeccable "Ad Libitum" standing out.

  2. Wallace Brothers - "What Cha Feel Is What Cha Get"
Review: Originally out on the Practice What You Preach album from 1993, "The Plan" by German funkateers Poets of Rhythm has never been pressed up as a single, but has always remained much sought-after by the funk heads, and why wouldn't it be? It's got it all: a James Brown kind of sleaziness backed by a jump-up groove and a sliding set of organs. Wallace Brothers feature on the flip, with the rare funk blazer by the name of "What Cha Feel Is What Cha Get", a rare floor-dominator now available for your turntable. Records are your friends, Mukatsuku leads the way! As played by Mr Thing,Snowboy,Dean Rudland,Smoov etc

  1. Dimenzio - "Bamba"
  2. Marius Cultier - "Diamant"
Review: Two Gilles Peterson classics on one 7 inch !! As per usual, the unstoppable Mukatsuku delivers the undeliverable, and somehow the label boss Nik Weston has managed to license a pair of sought after tunes to find on the second-hand market. It's the second instalment of the Club Jazz series with this 45 a Hungary vs France sound clash.Hungary easily wins this one thanks to the sublime rhythm that is "Bamba" by Dimenzio, an inimitable jazz-dance leviathan that manages to mash-up all the right elements of jazz together with something a little weirder and electronic - a truly supreme piece of music that is recommended to ANYONE. Marius Culter's "Diamant" is a high calibre jazz funk missile, and works beautifully as a stand-alone, but its somewhat swamped by the sheer quality of its counterpart. Recommended. As played by Dean Rudland, Mr Thing, Ashely Beedle, Faze Action,Red Greg,Scrimshire,Frank Booker,Nancy Noise and Pete from On The Corner Records etc

  1. Jungle Fever (2:50)

Review: Hamburg's Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band are as enigmatic and alluring as when they released their first single back in 2007, a tidy funk 7" that was to set the scene for a very particular sort of instrumental sound. "Jungle Fever", out on their own excellent Big Crown imprint, is a 2015 single that is truly hard not to play on repeat; the tune is a delicate yet funked-out blend of raw drums and tropical steel melodies, much like the name of the band already implies! The flipside "Tender Trap" is more broken and loose in its arrangement, something that makes it perhaps even more catchy and provocative than the title track.

Review: They say great things come in pairs, and this is certainly true for these two new Sofrito bombs. However, unlike its companion, SSS016 is more of a boogie monster, and Gordon Henderson's "The Highest Bidder" is a tune that is just so easily hummed thanks to its inimitable vocal, while "Hard World" is more of a stone-cold floor-filler with its fast-paced groove and gritty electronic feel. Both unmissable, both total killers. No surprises here - Sofrito doing what the label does best.

Review: Mukatsuku Records serve up two officially licensed killer afro boogie funk tracks taken from the 1979 holy grail Cry For Peace & Love album from Nigerian band Mixed Grill. Two tracks from the album are revisited- "Brand New Wayo" and "Funky People", both retaining the funkier elements whilst label boss Nik Weston edits them down to a handy 45 length . Review: Rare funk and soul connoisseurs Athens Of The North uncover four gems from one of the most interesting men in funk history. The man behind "Funky Nassau", Raphael Munnings really should have had a much bigger career than he did. Fortunately AOTN have recovered these four near-misses to ensure they're big hits for us... From the warm horns and Bahaman lilt of "Opportunity Knocking" to the organ and guitar heavy "Sleep On, Dream On" (think Booker T meets Hendrix) via the Gaye-style funk soul vibrancy of "Takin You Higher" this is a very special selection that pays respect to an unsung hero.

  3. LA Walk (Nik Weston Official extended re edit)
Review: It would be fair to say that Estiban Lindsay's one and only album, 1980's L.A Walk, is something of a sought-after rarity. Considered by many disco/boogie diggers to be a must-have, original copies of the Canadian classic currently change hands for three-figure sums online. Ever the dusty-fingered digger, Nik Weston has managed to license two tracks from the album after hearing global trotting DJ Hunee championing the main track in his sets in 2015 , and provides his own extended dancefloor re-edits. Both are subtly done, with Weston teasing out Lindsay's grooves and making more of his deliciously soulful versions, all without adding needless house drums or contemporary production tricks. The EP also contains the original version of the warm, disco-boogie gem "Come To Me". As played by Hunee,Eddie C,Tom Noble,Admin , Mike Shaw, Volcov,Frank Booker,Red Greg, Ashley Beedle,Joey Negro.Dom Servini,Miles Eastwick and more...

Review: Perhaps a lurch into the direction of head-spinning psychedelic guitar-driven groove wasn't where fans of DJ Format expected him to go next, but this compilation is proof positive that this man will doggedly pursue the funkiest of sound to the ends of the earth and the very edge of sanity. Collecting together gems from all over the globe, including such far-flung quarters as Uruguay and Yugoslavia, he creates a dizzying and ecstatically fuzzed-out melange that has no problem with jumping off the audial deep end in the pursuit of oblivion and ecstasy. Both a heady triumph and a cleansing experience for the third eye.

Review: They sometimes say that perseverance will win the day in the end and this is what happened with the Afro Funk monster of 'Piani' from French African artist Jo Tongo that took several years of negotiation to bring to the fruition of a potential Mukatsuku Records release. From the haunting intro this is one tune that you will never forget after first listen as it tippytoes through an afrocentric funk /disco groove that will keep your dancefloor alight. Review: 1983's Rive Gauche by Philippe Chany has been lost in the depths of time and, until now, many greedy second-hand sharks have been keeping its price way up high. This little synth-pop marvel is a sampler's dream, containing beautiful riffs here and there, and what is most alluring about it is its total detachment from any one genre. In fact, there are noticeable touches of all things Balearic in here, and many of its tunes could the perfect accompaniment to disco, boogie or even expansive DJ sets. With a little subtle nod to funk, Chany's album is one of those veritable one-offs, the sort of albums that are in a category of their own. A stunning reissue, once again, by Dark Entries.

Both tracks on this 12" originate from the sole record Jersey Shore act Minority Band released at the time they were active, the Journey To The Shore LP issued on local New Jersey label JSR Records back in 1980. Review: Napoleon Cherry is perhaps not the unknown name that Music From Memory excels at celebrating - PPU released a 12" of his brilliantly low-key soul workout "When You Had The Chance" earlier this year - but the Philadelphian musician's releases are certainly suitably hard to find. This career retrospective offers a mix of impossible-to-find tracks, many from his deliciously rare 1990 debut full-length, and previously unheard cuts. It portrays Cherry as a master of warm, evocative, Balearic soul and lo-fi synthesizer funk, whose analogue-rich releases were always out-of-step with the musical trends developing around him. Crucially, all 10 of these tracks are superb, making Walk Alone yet another essential Music From Memory purchase.

Review: When you hear people talk about 'boogie', it's largely thanks to the music that resides on the catalogue of the SAM label, some to some of the most blazing electro-disco bangers from the '80s. Standing undisputed as one of the founding labels for the genre, Doris Duke's cover of Marlena Shaw's "Woman Of The Ghetto" is the perfect balance between soul and something else, something murkier, deeper, with a more electronic edge. Both the vocal and the instrumental cuts are serious weapons for any dance floor, and although they might be relatively slower compared to other SAM joints, they're still as sexy as hell...

Review: New vinyl-only label Matasuna Records enters the fray with a stated focus on reworks of rare & forgotten music treasures from all over the world. The debut release, a 12" featuring four DJ-friendly edits from Voodoocuts and SoulBrigada sets the tone and has a fine titular pun to boot in Afreaka! Voodoocuts takes the A-side duties, pairing up the raw '70s Ivory Coast funk of "Kelja" with the steamy Latin styles of "Tortoise Loops". Those wanting something a bit more disco in sound will gravitate towards the "Hustleman" edit from SoulBrigada which originates from West Africa and has a killer horn line!!! "Madera" sees SoulBrigada look to Cape Verde for source material and features some subtle additions.

There's yet more '70s goodness with this new little scorcher: the A-side is 1973's "Tessassategn Eko" by Bahta Gebre Hiwot, a pensive Ethiopian pop hit for all sorts of music fans to enjoy, but "Ayalqem Tedqem" by Alemayehu Eshete on the B-side is where it's at... just listen to that bass and you'll instantly recognize this wonderful little cover.

Review: Two monumental South African groove-beauties for the latest installment of the Afro Funk Gems series from Mukatsuku. First up is a trip back to 1970, just three years after Letta Mbulu escaped apartheid and moved the US (and fifteen years before she collaborated with Michael Jackson on "Librarian Girl") the horn-laded, feel-good "Mahlalela" came from her third album and was licenced by Tamla Motown in South Africa too for a rare as hen's teeth 45. "Wonder Bra" is a solo mission from K&KZ, a fast-paced drum locomotive with plenty of whistling organs flying around in the high-ends, while Lack Of Afro's remix of "VLAM" by K&KZ and Adam Gibbons is a funkier, more laid-back swinger for a bit of one, two, three four on the dancefloor. Tidy 7" for the soul lovers!

First up is a 1976 number from Wganda Kenya who actually come from Colombia. You'd never tell; with vast harmonies and a sonic span that's as wide as the Serengeti plains, its heart beats to a strict Kenyan rhythm. 1. Feel So Good Inside (extended Waxist edit mix)
  2. Feel So Good Inside (original mix)
  3. Take Me To (New York City) (original mix)
Review: The result of a diligent digging quest since he heard DJ Klas drop it many years ago, Lyonaisse editor Waxist has finally track down his own copy of Lamar's 1980 disco soul love gem and given it some serious treatment. Extending the unfettered positivity of the original by almost two minutes (with special attention paid to that immense organ solo), it lives up to its name in every possible way. For authenticity's sake he's also included the original B-side "Take Me To New York". Still standing the test of time impeccably after 35 years, one tickle from the lolloping bassline and swooning keys and your dancefloor will be hooked.

Review: When you talk about 'kid funk', it's always long-lost B-sides that record collectors talk about like myths. But, Athens Of the North have managed to get their hands on the masters of a super-rare Virtue 7" that goes for no less that L1000 on the second-hand market in its original form. "Listen" is a deep, sublimely odd little funk tune that is as deep as you can get for boogie and funk; "Party" on the flip is no less of a gem, backed by Little George's supreme vocals and a tight little break, too. Sick.

Review: Music From Memory is a new label founded by Redlight Records duo Tako Reyenga and Abel Nagenast and fellow Amsterdam dweller Jamie Tiller and arrives with the mission statement "Giving overlooked and unreleased music that we love a second chance." Whilst there are plenty of labels going down the reissue path with varying degrees of musical integrity, its clear this trio have the best intentions at heart and their debut releases sets the bar truly high. The ocean loving Rhode Island based keyboardist and singer song writer Leon Lowman self released a series of albums in the early 80s dedicated to his hometown and the various women he tried to woo during this period. Executed as lo-fi beach funk and lazy synth jams in a manner that sounds way ahead of it's time, Lowman's work never received the wider acclaim it truly deserves and these albums have become highly sought after curios (check the Discogs listings for his debut LP Syntheseas) Material from both his 1980s albums features on Liquid Diamonds along with unreleased material that Lowman recorded at the time and this 12 track collection is likely to prove very popular with the musical historians out there!

Review: When it comes to the very best in motown and vintage, Michigan-schooled soul, there are very few betteer than the late, great Erma Franklin. Here, we have what is possibly the artist's best and most powerful tune "Hold On, I'm Coming", one that you'll instantly recognise and warm to thanks to that lovely, powerful crescendo on the chorus. On the B-side, another absolutely timeless bomb, the wonderful "Light My Fire" - made famous through The Doors - in all its original glory and style. What a song.

Review: San Fran instrumental soul and funk quartet The M Tet consist of guitarist Joe Baer Magnant, Hammond organ player Gary Pitman, drummer Michael Reed and Chris Lujan on Fender bass. Their brand of organ-based RnB with loving nods to the likes of The Meters and Booker T & The M.G.'s has surfaced on a small clutch of 45s for US funk labels these past few years and there is more to check on The M Tet bandcamp! After debuting on Funk Night with a killer instrumental funk rendition of "Express Yourself" last year, The M Tet are back on Frank Raines' label with another dinked display of goodness for the mind, body and soul. Up top "Vamp Oakland" is a delightful funk strut that sees Pitman's Hammond playing tee off against the tight drums of Reed. Down below it's the supple funk bassline from Lujan that really gets into your hips on "Ray Ban".

Review: The Sofrito label rarely, if ever, get is wrong, doesn't it? Once again, the London label bursts through the dance with two utterly steaming Haitian destroyers from Dominica's no.1, and these two cuts are bound to satisfy just about anyone into GOOD music. "Las Mal Parle" is a swinging, instantly hummable rhythm that you can safely leave on repeat for hours at a time, while "Jam Jam" is more of a Latino groove for the big ball dance - another stunner and a perfect companion to the beast that is the A-side. Another solid, timeless record from Sofrito.

Review: Disco-edged Afro funk by way of Milan, M'Bamina - comprising members from Congo, Benin and Cameroon - enjoyed a 12 year run from the early '70s to the mid-'80s, working with and supporting some of the biggest names possible from James Brown to Manu Dibango. Experimental is their second album (1978) and shows them really finding their groove and some incredibly tight musicianship. Prime examples of their unique funk melting pot include the sudden switches between epic Afro horn blasts and lolloping disco bassline of "Mosi Zole", the glistening universal folk-soul of "Mambu" and the frenetic guitars on the sweaty party blazer "Mamy". All of which still hits hard almost 40 years since it was first recorded.

Review: Serious Japanese Steel editry from Kazahaya: "Miracles" takes two recordings of the classic "I Believe In Miracles" (Mark Capanni and the Jackson Sisters) and deftly plays between the two to incredible effect with some really cool double-ups on the fills. Flip for a twist on a classic immortalised by Marlena Shaw where a thumping northern soul kickdrum drives us wild beneath the big orchestration. No messing around here.

Review: French groove connoisseur Charles Maurice digs deep into Brazil's once-thriving boogie and disco movement. All tracks recorded between 1977-84, most of them rarely - if ever - released outside of Brazil, it's a bounty of beautifully produced silky soul curated, arranged and delivered with authenticity. Highlights include the syrupy harmonies and Chic-style guitar and bass foundations of Brenda's "Natureza Viva", Lady Zu's cat-like mic purring on "Valeu A Pena" and the soaking wet synth/slap bass fusion and jazz chords on Rosana's "Alegria No Ar". Sun kissed.

Review: Wow, classics don't come much more special than this. A like-for-like repress of the 1970 RCA release, both sides here are soaked in Scott Heron's raw troubled soul. The endlessly sampled, hugely powerful and perfectly funky "Revolution" remains almost as poignant and prophetic as it was the day it was penned. "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" is much more personal and reveals his talent as a singer as much as the lead track boasts his poetry and ability to deliver a strong message.

Review: One of two sun-kissed KC excursions from the mighty Todd Terje for RSD, here we find him dissecting the horn-blasting feel-good 1976 strutter "I'm Your Boogie Man". Stripping the feels right back to the tight guitar and bass spine then redressing it slowly with each silky element, he's switched the concentrated party into a dramatic precession where every aspect gets its own place on the red carpeted groove.

Review: Released at the start of 2015, the inaugural Africa Airways collection was so successful it was repressed twice. Naturally this sophomore compendium of long-lost pan-African deep funk gems is equally as satisfying and enlightening. Ranging from the illustrious strings and tight disco groove of Ivory Coast's M'Bamina to the swooning vocals and arresting charge of Bongi Makeba by way of her mother mama Africa Myriam Makeba who closes the show with the tight pounding groove and commercial command "Toyota Fantasy", it's yet another triumphant collection for Africa Seven. Watch out for the Dutch anomaly mid-way; Oscar Harris's awesomely titled (and James Brown referencing) "Relax... Before Doing Sex" is guaranteed to light some fires whenever and wherever it's aired.

Review: A phenomenal two-track album from 1970 that was - and still is - ground-breaking in its complexity. A full orchestra of drums, led by Klaus Weiss but also featuring the likes of Uno Lindenberg and Keith Forsey, the whole journey is a percussive odyssey peppered with a little post-studio magic. At points intense, at others deep and meditative, there's a reason why this was going for upwards of L200 before the repress.
