  2. Light My Fire (2:41)
Review: When it comes to the very best in motown and vintage, Michigan-schooled soul, there are very few betteer than the late, great Erma Franklin. Here, we have what is possibly the artist's best and most powerful tune "Hold On, I'm Coming", one that you'll instantly recognise and warm to thanks to that lovely, powerful crescendo on the chorus. On the B-side, another absolutely timeless bomb, the wonderful "Light My Fire" - made famous through The Doors - in all its original glory and style. What a song.

  1. The Get Down (Marc Hype & Naughty NMX rework) (3:36)
  2. Hyped Up Ants (Naughty NMX redub) (3:28)
Review: Seen on the regular alongside fellow colluder Jim Dunloop, dusty-fingered German funkateer Marc Hype returns for another round of 7" action on the ever-dependable Dusty Donuts label. Up top, Hype teams up with Naughty NMX for a heavy duty tweak of James Brown classic "The Get Down" with the added weight to the drums really sounding fresh on a good system. "Pays the cost to be the boss" indeed! Naughty NMX goes solo on the B side, retreating another J Brown standard "I Got Ants In My Pants" with some added Public Enemy - the results speak for themselves. Good work all round.

  1. Make Me Believe In You (Tom Moulton remix) (6:28)
  2. Ain't No Love Lost (Tom Moulton remix) (5:47)
Review: Should you require further evidence of the all-round genius of Curtis Mayfield, look no further than this early '70s funk gem from Patti Jo. "Make Me Believe In You" was written and produced by the velvety-voiced musician in 1973, one of just a few singles released by Patti Jo but undoubtedly now an all-time classic. That rolling drum intro, the ear-wagging piano, the subtle orchestration and, above all, Patti Jo's killer vocal all combine for a perfect example of the halcyon days when funk was beginning to transform into disco. Mayfield himself later covered the track for the closer to his Sweet Exorcist LP! This BGP 7" sees Tom Moulton's extension of "Make Me Believe In You" combined with his remix of the other Patti Jo burner, "Ain't No Love Lost". Any self-respecting DJ needs the A-side though.

  6. Ooh, Ah Yeah!
  7. Ooh?
Review: Emotional Rescue starts 2016 digging deep in to the early 80s Bristol post punk scene of Pig Pag, the Wild Bunch and the Dug Out club. A short lived project of just 3 releases, Mouth trail-blazed leftfield percussive jams in the rich vain of Liquid Liquid and ESG but in their own jazz-infused way. Centered round the cultural melting post of the St Paul's district, it's pubs, clubs and blues parties threw together young and old to the sounds of dub, funk, jazz and soul and took the spark lit by punk rock and new wave and spawned music that still resonates today. Here then, on one EP are their complete recordings, including as the title cut, their best and deepest, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea. Featured on a compilation LP from the legendary Y Records, its bottom heavy dub sound is augmented by female and toasted vocals riding a top a heavy stepper style riddim. This is followed by an increasingly dizzy array of percussion jams. Acab (Part 2) is all skips and trumpets, while the versions of Take Your Coat Off perfect skat vocal / tom interplay, before the finale busts out the rockabilly influences in full effect with jagged guitar, skipping hats meets double bass punk style.

  1. Come To Me (Nik Weston Official extended re edit)

  3. LA Walk (Nik Weston Official extended re edit)
Review: It would be fair to say that Estiban Lindsay's one and only album, 1980's L.A Walk, is something of a sought-after rarity. Considered by many disco/boogie diggers to be a must-have, original copies of the Canadian classic currently change hands for three-figure sums online. Ever the dusty-fingered digger, Nik Weston has managed to license two tracks from the album after hearing global trotting DJ Hunee championing the main track in his sets in 2015 , and provides his own extended dancefloor re-edits. Both are subtly done, with Weston teasing out Lindsay's grooves and making more of his deliciously soulful versions, all without adding needless house drums or contemporary production tricks. The EP also contains the original version of the warm, disco-boogie gem "Come To Me". As played by Hunee,Eddie C,Tom Noble,Admin , Mike Shaw, Volcov,Frank Booker,Red Greg, Ashley Beedle,Joey Negro.Dom Servini,Miles Eastwick and more...

Review: In terms of being an afrobeat legend, Pasteur Lappe is Cameroon's Fela Kuti, an unsung hero who was ahead of the game back in the 1970s and 1980s, and one whose been famous for burning the pockets of many diggers nowadays. Luckily, Africa Seven have compiled some of his best work onto a ten-track LP, ranging from the funky oddities of "More Sekele Movement" or "Na Real Seke Fo'ya", to the future-zouk sound of "Sanaga Calypso", and plenty of jazzy, popped-out, disgruntled soulfulness to satisfy anyone from Gilles Peterson to Cherrystones. Heavy and warmly recommended.

  1. The Turtles - "I'm Chief Kamanawanalea" (Chief Rocca edit) (3:42)
  2. Steady B - "Serious" (BDP 12" remix) (4:28)
Review: 1968's "I'm Chief Kamanawanalea" is perhaps one of the greatest forgotten nuggets of pure breakbeatism, and the original by The Turtles dates back to 1968. The date isn't perhaps that surprising in relation to the sounds used and the quirkiness of the tune, but it's the fact that it sounds like straight-up hip-hop from early 80s NY; Chief Rocca aka J Rocc does a bit of editing on this version, but the meat and bones of the original are definitely there. Steady B features on the flip with a remix from BDP, and this one is a pure throwback hip-hop banger like they used to make them - think Run DMC but much more from the underground.

  2. Gotta Find A New Love (3:01)
Review: Fresh from 68: Atlanta family trio Scott Three only ever recorded two singles and remained something of a local sensation thereafter. It's a shame as there's a real Jackson Five feel to their delivery, especially on "Running Wild" where the session band breaks down and each member pops above the dense music bed. "Gotta Find A New Love" takes a much bluesier tact with rougher instrumentation and an almost rocky build on the choruses. Spotted passing hands for sizeable sums on one bidding site, this is the first time it's been pressed in over 45 years.

  2. Ronin (instrumental) (3:07)
Review: LA's Orgone crew are specialists in smooth, seductive soul music, and you could say that the band is waving the flag very high in the air for the continuation and health of the genre. It was their original material on Ubiquity back in the early 2000's that gave them their fame, but these two new nuggets on Colemine are pretty on-point in terms of dancefloor destruction: "Do What You Came Here To Do" is a rough and twisted sex bomb that sounds like it was made in '76 - a tune that would make a great addition to a Quentin Tarantino flick - and the "Ronin" instrumental is simply a great, devastating piece of instrumentation for you to get DOWN to.

  1. Harold Mabern - "I Want You Back" (5:24)
  2. Funk Inc - "Sister Janie" (5:14)
Review: Tennessee's legendary jazz pianist, Harold Mabern, is surely one of the kings of the mighty Prestige label, and his material helped bridge the gap between jazz and funk back in the 1970s, alongside the likes of Idris Muhammad, The Jimmy Castor Bunch and all those geniuses. "I Want You Back" is a stone-cold classic and contains one of the most hummable trumpet lines ever, and if you hear closely it's been reworked and sampled by none other than the King of pop when he was only a little one. Funk Inc's sublime "Sister Janie" resides on the flip, a more lo-fi funk bullett for the diggers, and complete with a dusty organ!

Review: Soundway come through with the goodness once more, offering up a fresh heavyweight reissue of Joe Mensah's Cry Laughter, an extremely rare document of Nigerian funk from the '70s. A rich mixture of poly-rhythmic afro-soul, jazz, highlife and afrobeat it has an undeniable Ghanaian flavour with Joe's arrangements, keyboard-playing and vocal style adding an extra sophistication to proceedings. This album, one of West Africa's very rarest, was recorded for the Decca label in Lagos and only ever released in tiny numbers in Nigeria in 1975. Two of the tracks previously featured on the Ghana Soundz compilation from Soundway but this is the first time it's been officially reissued in its entirety.

Review: UK funk outfit spearheaded by drummer Mike Bandoni returns to the source with a pressing of the original version of "The Strut". A sweaty, Hammond-snapping, break-busting jam with slippery wah wah guitars all laid down by Mike himself. It was a freaky gem when first dropped on the band's debut album in 2008 but this previously unheard and unreleased version is even heavier! Flip for a brand new original: "Spiritual Interlude II (The Heist)". A deeper groove driven by Bandoni's stately breaks and laced with ghostly organs care of co producer Nino Auricchio that rise like voodoo spirits throughout the track. Serious stuff. And only 300 pressed, too.

Review: Nigeria's Tee Mac has been a digger's favourite ever since his tunes came out in the 1980s, and alongside the likes of Willian Onyeabor, he has been one of the driving forces behind his country's afro-rock and afro-beat mania. France's Hot Casa have masterfully put together a compilation containing his best tunes, originally out on the Party Fever LP. This is all quality, but just to give you a little taster, you have the inimitable funk destroyer that is "Nepa",Tee Mac's notorious "Talk To Me" bombshell - a tune that verges closely to proto-house - the sublimely washed-out "Stay On Me", and the painfully hummable swings of "Wake Up". Recommended.

Review: Since making his debut in the mid noughties - some 15 years after he began making beats -Ibiza-based Guts has developed his sound somewhat. Where his early releases doffed a cap to classic trip-hop and downtempo grooves, recent outings have effortlessly joined the dots between live funk, golden era hip-hop and modern soul, with some notable jazz and Latin American influences thrown in. Eternal, his latest full-length, continues this approach, throwing in additional nods to P-funk (the superb "Give You Up"), nu-jazz ("Incomplete"), and Afrobeat ("Dance, Love & Die"). With a string of guest musicians, singers and rappers lending a hand, Eternal is a vibrant, thrill-a-minute album that shows off the full range of Guts' finely honed skills.

  2. Edwin Starr - "Easin' In" (3:12)
Review: The label says it all... Neither of these tracks have ever been released outside the original albums they came on. Until now. The legendary Candido steps up for the A-side with an uptempo, percussion-heavy groove from his 1971 album Beautiful; with big brassy fills and a stripped back, sample-addict's dream breakdown, this still punches as hard now as it did over 40 years ago. Flip for a funk trip from the equally revered Edwin Starr. Taken from his Hell Up In Harlem soundtrack, it's quintessential Blaxploitation funk with slippery bass, sleazy guitars and Edwin's velvet vocals that can go from purring to roaring in 0.03 seconds. Limited to one per customer, jump on this as soon as you can.

  9. Myriam Makeba - "Toyota Fantasy" (John Bryan edit) (3:52)
Review: Released at the start of 2015, the inaugural Africa Airways collection was so successful it was repressed twice. Naturally this sophomore compendium of long-lost pan-African deep funk gems is equally as satisfying and enlightening. Ranging from the illustrious strings and tight disco groove of Ivory Coast's M'Bamina to the swooning vocals and arresting charge of Bongi Makeba by way of her mother mama Africa Myriam Makeba who closes the show with the tight pounding groove and commercial command "Toyota Fantasy", it's yet another triumphant collection for Africa Seven. Watch out for the Dutch anomaly mid-way; Oscar Harris's awesomely titled (and James Brown referencing) "Relax... Before Doing Sex" is guaranteed to light some fires whenever and wherever it's aired.

Review: The Bacao Rhythm and Steel Band are one of the curious outfits who sound as if they're right out of the '70s, when in fact they are happily playing on their instruments in 2016, and making some serious burners. Their zesty ad energetic blend of horns, steel pan and live drums is the sort of African funk for those looking for some fresh and innovative rhythms in this day and age, with "Love Like This" providing exactly that - a bass-heavy, tripped-out kinda groove that spits quality from all angles. On the flip of this tidy 7", Cat Stevens classic "Was Dog A Doughnut" is taken on a more tropical flex, stripping down the groove and laying out one hell of a steel-pan concoction. Bless.

Review: The Foster Jackson Group are one of those forgotten but highly coveted one-hit disco wonders that exist in the bottomless pit that is often classed simply as 'soul'. All that aside, these people made an incredible 12" back in 1979 that has been going for serious bucks on the second-hand market, but thankfully the prodigious P&P Records have saved the day yet again. "Feel The Spirit" is a devilish, inimitable disco jingle that is split between the more percussion ridden "Long Disco Version", and a more contained, more floor-focussed "Disco Version" They both contain that instantly addictive dose of piano, though. Check it out, you'll know what we mean...

No messin' here as Visioneers go straight for the funk jugular with two dope versions. Heavy horns and bongos aplenty - this is just wanted the doctor ordered. It's limited, it's hot, go get it!

  2. Swan Silvertones - "If You Believe Your God Is Dead (Try Mine)" (3:13)
Review: Mukatsuku Records dig deep once more with a sweet little 45 featuring two officially licensed stormers dripping with rarity. "Reaching For Our Star" from Sharon Revoal is a big soul monster that you may well have heard dropped in sets from Gilles Peterson, Sam Floating Points and Four Tet. Originally surfacing on the Forte Records label circa 1980, the track is fairly bossed by the low slung disco bassline and Sharon's sultry vocal delivery and will nice up any disco or funk dance. Mukatsuku make this 7" all the more delicious with the B-side presence of The Swan Silvertones jammer "If You Believe Your God Is Dead (Try Mine)" which is surely one of the funkiest gospel 45's to come out of the early 70's!! As played by DJ Spinna,Ge Ology on NTS,Sadar Bahar,Red Greg,Ashley Beedle,Marc Hype,Nicola Conte,Juergen Jazzanova,Floating Points and many more

Review: Chop-walloping funk soul: AOTN bossman Fryer has allegedly spent the past 15 years trying to secure this '70s rarity. Silky, youthful and compounded with an insatiable groove, it's dangerously close to Jackson 5's best output and no one would blame you if you thought it actually was. Flip for "Dimona", a slower burner that swoons and shows the band's more mature side. This is the first time either side has seen a 45... You know what to do.

Review: Two powerful bossa nova workouts from 1972: Brazilian chanteuse Rose Maria delivered two incredible funk jams on Tapecar which escaped her prolific album releases and never enjoyed a repress. Until now... The Afro-Latin soul of "Deixa Nao Deixa" is all about the sudden dynamic from purring verses to emphatic, harmonic chorus while "Avenida Atlantica" takes a more straight-up funk route with its dominant horns and heavy boss break. Instant party material.

Review: Destination Youngstown Ohio, 1973: A young troupe of musicians gain local notoriety through their on-point covers and originals. While they never make it past the local legend status, they did record one 45" on a very limited run... And here it is. "Well Good" is a slinky slab of sizzling Hammond-led funk that builds with the help of some interesting time signature switches and electrified guitar. Think Booker T crossed with Shuggie Otis. "Bells" shows the band's softer side as they lay down some slow burning, soulful harmonic heaven that's made all the more poignant by the fact that the band didn't continue recording. Fittingly, this reissue is highly limited too.

Review: Joe Tex's backing band (and occasional co-writers), Second Resurrection are one of the most successful bands you've never heard of. Having performed and toured with the likes of the Isley Brothers, Shalamar, Rufus & Chaka Khan and many more, it's no surprise they only released one record... They were too busy. These unearthed recordings prove they should have recorded more. Never released before, both "Keep On Keeping On" and "Wise Up" are unrelenting, pumping slices of upbeat disco funk. The former is mildly psychedelic with bold harmonic touches while the latter slows things down just a tad, switches synths for horns and gets preachy with a full spoken word vocal. Apparently AOTN have more Resurrections planned in the near future too. We can't wait.

Review: All AOTN releases are special and have been curated, researched and excavated from the past with total care, attention and respect. This one, however, is a whole new level. Apparently originals have regularly changed hands for over $6000 and its taken 10 years for AOTN boss Fryer to located and procure a clean copy of the 300 pressings made way back in 77. "Gangster Boy" is a subtle slice of soul that gradually develops with sentiment and gusto as the backing vocals deliver harmony after harmony. Flip for a heavier deep funk affair where the instrumentation is much fuller and rawer but the BVs are just as big. A really interesting release in every possible direction. AOTN keep on delivering.

Review: In amongst their programme of May essentials, Athens of the North have focused on highlight the grand soul escapades of Master Weldon Irvine across two killer sevens. We Gettin' Down the second and final of these and features two tracks from Irvine's 1974 LP for RCA Spirit Man. The more scholarly ears out there will of course recognise elements of "We Gettin' Down" from A Tribe Called Quest classic "Award Tour" and it's been lifted by everyone from Dego's Tek 9 project to bandy legged pop star Jamiroquai over the years. It's a pleasure from start (what a moog riff) to end and is complemented by the jazzed up bliss of "The Power & The Glory". Athens of the North are really spoiling us!

Review: Never pressed to 45 before, both firing sides are taken from Esther's debut album from 1969; Newport News, Virginia. Both cover versions, JJ Barnes' "Chains Of Love" is given gospel-funk muscle as Esther belts out her heart over an impeccably frenetic band while Joe Zawinul's instantly recognisable jazz standard "Walk Tall" gets a powerful spoken word flex. Gutsy business to the very core, this is a snapshot of Esther at her most ambitious, energetic and creative.

Review: Released in 1971 and written and recorded by Dave Hamilton (one of Motown's most prolific and influential session players), Sugar Billy Garner plays the consummate band leader over a relentless groove that rolls with drama. Billy gets sweatier, the guitars get busier, the dynamic gets heavier and heavier... So heavy it rolls into a second part. Primed for the floor, it still hits hard 44 years after its release.
