  1. Mavis John - "Use My Body" (Nik Weston official exclusive edit)
  2. G Benton & Nik Weston - "Riviera Jam" (Tropical Storm Steel Panapella mix)
Review: Juno exclusive Mukatsuku Records official repress on white vinyl and new labels to 300 hand-numbered copies.1980's "Use My Body" by Mavis John is a highly coveted piece of exotic funk, the sort of tune your eyeballs pop out to when you find it in a second-hand bin in some dark basement. However, we live in the real world and that stuff doesn't happen; what does happen is the Mukatsuku label saving you the trouble and reissuing it. Label boss Nik Weston gives his own edit of the tune here, and he transforms an already wonderful piece of soulful dance into an even more powerful DJ weapon - it's an absolute stunner and you can tell why the original has been picking up 3 figures on the second hand market. On the B-side, Weston teams up with Benton for a steel-pan excursion called "Riviera Jam (Tropical Storm Steel Panpella mix)", a superb addition to this beast of a 7". As played by Bradley Zero on NTS plus Red Greg,Gilles Peterson & Admin

Review: Not just a beautiful compliment to pay someone special, but a hugely influential record that inspired Floating Points' now legendary Plastic People parties, too... A super obscure and expensive one at that. Now re-issued on Floating Points' own Melodies imprint - across three 45s - the Detroit band get full exposure with the deliciously funky main track enjoying two versions before dipping into the softer, more pastoral charms of "I Feel Like Dancing" and the string-led swoon festival, "Theme For Someone Special". We close on two contrasting grooves; an earthy ballad ("Trust Me") and a Whitfield & Strong style funk instrumental ("Dance Awhile"). Cheers Sam!

Review: Two killer album tracks lifted from the Virgin Ubiquity II unreleased album for BBE from a few years back get their own issue on a dinked 45 for the first time for London based Mukatsuku Records. The 7 inch encompasses two musical sides of Roy Ayers with the A side kicking off with the hard funk urgency of the instrumental Funk In The Hole with underlying strings and fatback drums flipped by the super soulful but sultry vocal track, Liquid Love. Early DJ support on this 45 comes from Red Greg, DJ Spinna, Herbaliser & Kenny Dope. This exclusive Juno version comes in hand stamped kraft paper inner sleeve plus branded card sleeve, protective outer sleeve + sticker.

  1. Lamine (4:05)
  2. Police Woman (2:32)
  3. Kunming Beats (1:48)
Review: The latest artist to join Dinked's roster of soul and funk obsessives is DJ D.S.K, a China-based Brit who grew up cutting and scratching hip-hop and old funk breaks. The three tracks showcased here seem to be built around samples from tasty old funk bombs, from cut-up and rearranged breaks, to punchy horn lines and low-slung basslines. Lead cut "Lamine" is particularly potent, featuring as it does DJ-friendly drum breaks, jangling soul guitars, rubbery bass and a floor-friendly rhythm track. Flip for the looser, electric piano-heavy dancefloor strut of "Police Woman", and the dusty, head-nodding, trumpet-laden hip-hop bounce of "Kumming Beats" (and, yes, it's a sneaky cut-up of an old James Brown tune).

Review: DJ Apt-One dons his hairiest mane for more roaring Lion edits. And this time he's brought company. Fresh from collaborating with Soul Clap, here we find him in fine funk fettle with two more precision dug obscurities: "Keep On Hangin' On" is classic loopy filtered disco house finesse while "Finally" takes us deep into electro boogie heaven. Supamomo Jay Airiness takes the B for two equally XL party-sized joints: "Funky Situation" is a total carnival of percussion and slapbass magic while "Two Of Us" is all about the bumper-busting disco funk. Divine.

  2. Maybe I'll Find Sombody New (3:24)
Review: For those of a certain age, Gwen McRae's "All This Love That I'm Givin" will always evoke memories of Cassius' French Touch classic "Feeling For You", which sampled it heavily. It remains a killer record in its' own right, though, as this timely reissue proves. Originally released in 1979, it sees McRae at her powerful best, delivering a potent message to an errant lover over a killer, low-slung disco-funk groove. It's one of the tracks that should really be in any discerning funk, soul or disco DJ's collection. Flip for original B-side "Maybe I'll Find Somebody New", a breezier chunk of laidback soul with a slightly Southern lilt. It's good, but pales into insignificance compared to the brilliant 'A' side.

Review: David Hanke has only just started releasing music under the Dem Juju Poets moniker, and already he's managed to instil a very clear direction in terms of sound aesthetic and creative direction. This new two-tracker for the emergent Matasuna label is full of joie de vivre, with the opening tune "Barabara" managing to blend the best elements of funk, high-life, afrobeat, and generally coming up with a tune that's just so damn easy to dance to. "People's Republic", the flipside track, is a horn-led groover, another slice of worldly funk back by a bumpy, positive tribalistic tone that we instantly associate to the dance floor. Excellent stuff - let's keep it coming!

  1. Brotherson (Rare long disco instrumental version)
  2. Brotherson (Strings & vocal shorter album version)
Review: Mukatsuku new release is part of the 10 years of Mukatsuku Records series and contains two remastered tracks of Atlanta musician Ojeda Penn presented here according to Ojeda officially for the very first time. The A side kicks off with the extended holy grail instrumental version of 'Brotherson' taken from the Happiness album. There were two versions of the album Happiness in 1980 on the IFE independent label. They looked almost identical but the first version contained the now rarer elongated 9 & half minute jazz fused instrumental version of 'Brotherson' and then a few months later Penn recut the same album but with a much shorter version of the main track but this time adding strings and vocals assisted by Tommy Stewart from 'Bump N Hustle Music' fame. The former version is now being sold up to 500 dollors so this 180 gram single is a welcome release to the reissue market. Mukatsuku, after many years of discussion is glad to finally be in a position to finally put out both versions on one phat 12''. Juno copies come in an exclusive branded card sleeve + stickers and a signed insert.

  1. Open Your Heart (part 1) (2:40)
  2. Satisfactorize Your Mind (2:45)
Review: The work of obscure, conscious funk outfit Africano has previously proved popular with reissue labels, in part due to the rare nature of their original 1970s releases. This limited 7" single features two of their finest tracks: the fairly well known "Open Your Heart", and 1973's "Satisfactorize Your Mind". While the latter is a string-drenched treat that feels like a dustier, slightly more psychedelic take on the Philadelphia International sound, it's "Open Your Heart" that most impresses. Featuring urgent, passionate vocals, winding horn lines and a stomping funk-soul beat, it remains the outfit's finest moment bar none.

Review: The Spacetalk label returns with this fine compilation by French house shotter, Jeremy Underground. We know him, and you surely know him, though his My Love Is Underground label, an imprint that has produced some of the best deep house in the last five years. He's not in house mode today, though, and instead the DJ shows us his soul roots. Ron Rinaldi's opener "Mexican Summer" is a real peach of a song, then there's some Brazilian disco-funk through Leila Pinheiro's "Tudo Em Cima", and the supremely deep and sensual "Superstar" by NCCU. Other favourites include Maureen Bailey's bittersweet anthem "Takin' My Time With You", and June Evans' "Hardly Need To Say", a tune that we could just leave on repeat. A highly recommended comp!

Review: After releases on Goodgroove and Riddim Fruit, The Allergies, aka Bristol nu-funk duo DJ Moneyshot and Rackabeat, found a welcome home in Jalapeno for their debut album, As We Do Our Thing, which was released earlier this year. Vinyl fans sore at the lack of the album in their preferred format will find consolation in the fact two gleaming highlights now feature on this 45 for Jalapeno. Up top, the smart soul sampling and tight breakbeat patterns of "Love's Supposed To Be" represent all that is good about the party-starting style of The Allergies, whilst "As We Do Our Thing" is a more midtempo horn funker.

Review: It would be fair to say that Sir Waziri Oshoma is not one of Nigeria's better-known musicians, despite having a high reputation amongst collectors. Throughout the 1970s and early '80s, he recorded and released a number of albums - each packed with his distinctive interpretations of the then dominant Afrobeat and Highlife sounds - with the backing of his Africa 70 style house band, the Traditional Sound Makers. Volume 3 initially appeared on the band leader's own label back in 1980, and here gets the reissue treatment thanks to the folks behind Paris record store turned label Superfly. Its' four lengthy workouts are naturally superb, making it one of those hard-to-find gems that should be in any Afrobeat enthusiast's collection.

Review: With their first 45 selling out in under one week, Bristol troupe Mohawkestra are doing all the right things in all the right places. Especially our ears. Now loading up their second funk 45 bullet, it's likely to be just as successful... Big Hammond-led funk all the way, "I Feel Free" has the frenzy of The Meters but the fire of the Mohawkes while "Growler" does anything but growl - swinging with a fizzy lead line and heavy string strums, there's a train-like momentum that refuses to quit until the very last break. Heavenly.

Review: Adam Mori aka B.Bravo is back like a thick gush of smoke filling up the dance floor, and the Brownswood-Bleep associate is in no mood to wait till the warm up set is done. These two new smokers for the Bastard Jazz imprint are pure class, every bit as sexy and seductive as we've come to expect from the producer, starting with the sultry claps and bass of the excellent "Im For Real", a sun-scorched killer of a tune, fit for riding shotgun and turing the rooftop down. On the flipside, Mr Carmack detunes "Stay The Night" down to a funky, mid-tempo level, and it's just about the grooviest of boogie tracks that we've heard in a while. Think Daft Punk meets Willie Hutch. Wonderful.

Review: Christopher Sprains and The Strange Band recorded a whole heap of material in a hazy, drug-fuelled 19178, but their - surprisingly - never gained enough traction with the NYC disco crowd. Perhaps this work was too ahead of its time and, while it does share some qualities with the music of Rick James, it contains something dark, sexy, a little bit twisted and, of course, strange. The lead track "You" is a synth-heavy, electrifying boogie cut with a rugged percussion swing and an air of post-punk to its mix down, not to mention those utterly freaky vocals; our favourite, though, is actually "Space V", an insanely nutty electro cut that would have undoubtedly been on The Electrifying Mojo's playlist should it have landed on his lap. Totally recommended...

Review: For their latest tribute to Nigeria's booming music scene of the '70s and early '80s, Comb & Razor Sound has decided to do things differently. Whereas most compilations of vintage Nigerian grooves focus on music made in and around the bustling city of Lagos, Calabar-Itu Road looks instead at tracks made and released by those in South Eastern Nigeria. In true crate-digging fashion, the two records here - featuring tracks from previously unheralded stars of the "Calabar" scene, including Etubom Rex Willians and Cross River Nationale - come accompanied by a thoroughly researched, 44-page booklet telling the story of the region's love affair with popular music. If you're interested in African funk, soul and disco, it should be an essential purchase.

"Don't You Know", which was first released as a single way back in 1977, is undoubtedly one of the group's best outings - a kind of missing link between Rotary Connection, Herbie Hancock, and 1980s proto-Balearica. This limited edition 12" features the superb original and an extended rework from Munich-based scalpel fiend Alkalino. He's version is undoubtedly tastefully done and in-keeping with the sweet and dreamy feel of the original, even if it does include a metronomic new, DJ-friendly beat pattern underneath.

This 7" dinker from Stephen Colebrooke being a case in point; both cuts on Shake Your Chic Behind originate from the stupidly rare album, Stephen, issued on Bahamas label G.B.I. Recording Co. Ltd back in the day. Instead of wasting time and money tracking that LP down, place your trust in AOTN and this 45 which picks out two highlights that will result in a delighted dancefloor. "Shake Your Chic Behind" is simply wonderful, a forgotten Islands disco classic touched with catchiness and personality - when that moog solo comes in... oh, my! Review: Although Brazil's Banda Black Rio remain infamous for the albums that they recorded in the late 1970s, two beautiful LPs that rode that singular wave of samba-ridden jazz dance, 1980's "Miss Cheryl" is an outstanding tune, and we can hear why RCA picked it up back in the day. Mr Bongo provides us with the reissue here and, if you haven't heard it, it's an absolute delight which switches between disco, psych, and something inherently Brazilian - there's even a wacky synth in there, for good measure. Compatriot Miele appears on the flip with "Melo Do Tagarela (Rappers Delight)", a sublime slice of early, electronic boogie that sounds as fresh today as it did back at the tail end of the 70s. A devious little reissue that you should own...

Review: Soul Jazz Records has investigated the World of New Orleans funk - arguably the original variant of the style - on numerous other occasions - but it's a sound that's always worth revisiting. This edition covers 26 years between 1951 and '77, combining early rhythm and blues workouts from the likes of Gus 'The Groove' Lewis and Dave Bartholomew, with later material from such New Orleans luminaries as Chocolate Milk, Johnny Adams, Eddie Bo and Zilla Mayes (whose torch song "All I Want Is You" provides a fitting conclusion). As usual, Soul Jazz has included a brilliantly comprehensive 44-page booklet, inside which you'll find heaps of historical information, and original photographs sourced from the Ralston Crawford New Orleans Archive.

Review: We probably say this more than we should, but this time our statement really isn't prone to hyberbole: we love the Cultures Of Soul label, and whatever genre they're reissuing, we can always count on them to deliver the quality like no other imprint. From Evans Pyramid to the recent black gospel compilation they've released, we have nothing but good stuff to say about them, and this is equally true of this new South African disco collection from the years 1980-1984. The title alone should do the trick but trust us, there is nothing but fire in here, and if you're the sort of collector scouting for rare African rhythms then this is the gear for you. The Cannibals start off with some lovely docile disco jams, Harari's "Party" is a sublime lo-fi funk cut, the Don Laka material is pure disco glory, and the remaining tunes by the likes of Neville Nash or Al Etto are able to destroy ANY dance floor from here to Durban. Top marks from us...

Review: Little Beat Different Issues will focus on Eastern European reissues previously unavailable to Western markets. The first release is a compilation by Czech electronic music pioneers ORM, which was comprised of Petr and Pavel Orm. According to LBDI, they 'quickly rose to fame as the country's eminent pop producers'. Featured here are the brothers' own recordings from four different albums, released between 1979 and 1984. Here, their sound and artistic direction was remarkably different to their mainstream productions. Be prepared for some spacey and cosmic funk vibes full of sleazy guitar licks, infectious synth bass and much vintage synthesizer flair.

Review: It would be fair to say that Estiban Lindsay's one and only album, 1980's L.A Walk, is something of a sought-after rarity. Considered by many disco/boogie diggers to be a must-have, original copies of the Canadian classic currently change hands for three-figure sums online. Ever the dusty-fingered digger, Nik Weston has managed to license two tracks from the album after hearing global trotting DJ Hunee championing the main track in his sets in 2015 , and provides his own extended dancefloor re-edits. Both are subtly done, with Weston teasing out Lindsay's grooves and making more of his deliciously soulful versions, all without adding needless house drums or contemporary production tricks. The EP also contains the original version of the warm, disco-boogie gem "Come To Me". As played by Hunee,Eddie C,Tom Noble,Admin , Mike Shaw, Volcov,Frank Booker,Red Greg, Ashley Beedle,Joey Negro.Dom Servini,Miles Eastwick and more...

First up is an unreleased version of the popular Wganda Kenya club favourite 'Tipit Hayed' which Blundetto had done a few years ago for his own DJ sets but never surfaced commercially. 4. Like A Virgin (feat Rayla Sunshine) (5:12)
Review: German soul troupe Hi-Fly Orchestra let rip on a serious cover version session with four tightly sewn showdowns: Karl Frierson adds bounds of gutsy, gritty soul power as he takes care of the vocals on the turbo-soul take on Lenny Kravitz's "Let Love Rule" and the deep-swing vision of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On". Flip for two deliciously dreamy takes with Rayla Sunshine as "Purple Rain" gets a super-swoon shine while "Like A Virgin" is given a jazz twist that's so immense you'll pinch yourself it's not the original and Madonna's is the cover.

Review: 17 albums deep and Lee Fields still has something to say. Arm in arm with longstanding band The Expressions, the troupe dig deep an impeccable roll of soul: The soft harmonies and yearning horns of "I'm Coming Home", the light electronic elements on the rhythm of the hazy, laidback torch song "Never Be Another You", the swooning blues of "Let Him In", the almost highlife sparkle to the guitars on "Where Is The Love"... Each of the ten tracks hits with a freshness, energy and realness that few - if any - 70s troubled troubadours could muster. Essential.

  2. Break Yo Self: Breakbeat Lou Tribute (4:11)
Review: Dusty-fingered break-digger J Rocc can always be relied upon to deliver the goods, especially when it comes to the tasty Funky President Edits series. Informed by his impeccable turntablist skills, both versions of "Break Yo Self" offer a whirlwind trip through scorching, floor-friendly funk and rock breaks, with a wide range of classic and little-known samples thrown in for good measure. The A-side "Breakbeat Lenny Tribute" version begins with some Bob James style organ fluidity, before ramping up the energy levels via a string of killer drum hooks. If anything, the flipside "Breakbeat Lou Tribute" is even more party-friendly, with J-Rocc quickly running through almost everything in his box of tricks. In other words, it's a cut-up masterclass.

Review: Soul Tribe celebrate the epic legacy of Chess subsidiary Argo with two of the label's many outstanding soul burners. Etta's big swing sauce-pot number takes pride of place with all 55 years of sultry devotion still deeply embedded into the recording. Banks' slightly lesser known pastoral ballad sets up camp on the B. Lilting and lolloping with horseback storytelling, it's the perfect foil both musically and narratively.

Review: Melbourne is home to one of the strongest funk revival scenes on the planet. Amongst the scene's heaviest hitters - in more than one sense - is drummer-turned-producer Ivan Kkatchoyan. Having been part of heavy funk combo Cookin' On 3 Burners since the dawn of the millennium, he's now the driving force behind Choi Records. His heavy funk rhythms and astute period production are at the heart of Mayfield's "On The Ropes", which also includes some stellar horns and - in its A-side form, at least - some on-point vocals from Carla Troiano. Like previous Choi releases by Traffic and Fulton Street, it's a revivalist funk treat.

Review: Mr Beatnick's Mythstery label returns with 002 after an excellent first outing from Breakplus, whose 12" was vey much to our desire when it dropped late last year. The two actually go head-to-head on this 12" and, much like the twisted disco of artists like Black Devil Disco Club, this is some straight-up sexy gear, disjointed and unadulterated for maximum pleasure. Breakplus' weirdo boogie on "Le Train Inflamme" is our kinda joint, the sort of fuming, acid-laced glitz that'll appeal to the disco-heads and house-nerds alike; Mr Beatnick's "Achilles Heel" is just as eerie and roughed-up, but the vibe on here is darker, moodier, and drenched in a deep electronic edge. Very highly recommended.
