Review: With so many archival labels putting out compilations of 1970s Nigerian funk and disco, Soundway has decided to change tack. Doing It In Lagos is a primer on the country's lesser-celebrated 1980s boogie scene. According to the superb liner notes, most of the music on show here - and, yes, it's universally brilliant - was created by a younger generation of musicians who wanted to move away from Afrobeat, and further towards an authentically American style electrofunk sound. As a result, many of the tracks featured on Doing It In Lagos - not least Hotline's brilliant opener, Livy Ekemezie's disco-funk slammer "Holiday Action" and Sonny Enang's superb "Don't Stop That Music" - are every bit as special as the American-produced records they were trying to emulate.

Review: With crate digging partner Kon otherwise engaged producing in-demand disco edits, DJ Amir has kept himself busy. Here, he delves into his seemingly bottomless crates to put together a compilation of "rare music from across the Americas". Interestingly, much of the music - and, let's be honest, you won't be familiar with any of the featured artists - was recorded in New York during the 1960s and '70s, largely by immigrant musicians from Brazil, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. That ensures a heady mixture of salsa, boogaloo, mambo, Latin-tinged funk and soul, rhumba, and Afro-Cuban jazz. In other words, it's a killer collection of lesser-known Latin gems. What's not to like?

Review: Craig Charles' CD round-up of cuts that have done that business at his popular Funk & Soul Club events is becoming something of an annual tradition. This fourth volume in as many years is, predictably, stacked high with high quality fare. While there are plenty of straight-up funk and soul cuts - check The Traffic's killer cover of "White Lines", Brian Auger & The Trinity's 'Black Cat', and John Heartsman & Circles' tasty "Talking About My Baby", for starters - Charles's on-point selection also include nods to jazz-dance, Afro-funk, Latin beats, retro-futurist boogie-soul, and simmering torch songs (a sublime contribution from '80s star Lisa Stansfield).

Review: For their latest trawl through the back catalogues of legendary labels Epic, Arista, Philadelphia International and RCA Victor, SonyBMG has handed over the reins to noted re-editor and crate-digger DJ Reverend P. He duly gathers together three discs of killer material, alternating between the well-loved - Tom Browne's "Funkin' For Jamaica", The Jones Girls' "Nights Over Egypt", and George Duke's "Brazilian Love Affair", for starters - and the slightly lesser-known. The latter category contains some excellent alternative mixes, including the original, killer 12" version of Herbie Hancock's "Stars In Your Eyes", a rare Tom Moulton remix of "Anyway You Wanna" by Peoples Choice, and a smattering of the good Reverend's own re-edits.

Review: During the mid 1980s, there were few more vibrant venues in London than the iconic Wag Club. While the club's musical offering was wide, between 1983 and '87 it became closely associated with the capital's Rare Groove, disco and jazz-dance scenes. It's this aspect of the club's history that Chris Sullivan explores on Wag: Iconic Tunes From The Wag Club 1983-87. Over the course of four discs, Sullivan has gathered together some superb cuts. While the epic tracklist is undeniably weighted towards fairly well known scene anthems (think party-starters from James Brown, Dinosaur L, Aaron Neville, Cerrone, Digital Underground and Ray Buretto, for starters), Sullivan has wisely thrown in a few forgotten, or recently overlooked gems.

Review: Amongst Nigerian soul and disco collectors, Tee Mac's Night Illusion has long been regarded as one of the great "lost albums". It was originally privately pressed and released on the enigmatic producer's own label in 1980, with only 1,000 copies in existence. It's perhaps unsurprising that Soul Jazz Records has chosen to reissue it, serving it up on CD for the first time. It's a cracking set, all told, with Marjorie Barnes' superb vocals riding rhythm tracks that variously touch on horn-heavy reggae, sumptuous disco-soul, Blaxploitation style funk, and, of course, authentic Nigerian Afro-disco. Despite the record's obscure roots, it's brilliant produced, and actually superior sound and vibe wise to many American-produced disco and soul albums of the period.

Review: Heavenly Sweetness has described this sophomore full-length from genre-straddling musician/producer/vocalist Leroy Thomas as being like "Miles Davis meets the Beastie Boys". While that's partly accurate - several of the tracks blend hip-hop beats and crunchy rock guitars with jazz instrumentation and spacey electronics - Cliquish is awash with other influences, too. Some will hear the influence of the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the energetic funk-rock of "Asako", while "Mandy Jo" and "Snicka Bar" feel similar in sound and ethos to the work of Outkast and Plantlife. As for "Calm Down", it's classic soul-jazz with a smoky, contemporary twist. Yet for all the genre-fusing eccentricity, Cliquish holds together impressively, thanks in no small part to Thomas' distinct vision.

Review: When Cymande gathered to record A Little Act of Faith, it marked their first combined studio session for 40 years. Given the high esteem in which their 1970s material is held, it was a risky move. It seems, though, that they've lost none of their skill for crafting decidedly cosmic, fragrant blends of dub, reggae, jazz, funk and soul. While there's nothing here to topple classics such as "Dove", "Fug", and "The Message", it's still a hugely enjoyable and pleasingly blazed set. Highlights are plentiful, from the soulful, dub-influenced, deep jazz-funk loveliness of "Everybody's Doing Alright", and heart aching piano lament "No Weeping", to the glistening guitars, chanted vocals and trademark hazy horns of "Everybody Turn Rasta".

Review: Despite its' obscurity, Crystal Winds' 1982 album First Flight became something of a must-have for those on the British jazz-funk scene in the early '80s. Given that it was pressed in limited qualities on the Chicago-based private press imprint Crash Ear, copies regularly changed hands for huge sums. Here, BBE give the album its' first legitimate re-issue (bootlegs circulated back in 2003). It remains a superb set - a sinewy, sensual collection of smooth soul, laidback funk and musically intricate jazz-funk that portrays its' creators - local musicians Paul Coleman and Morris Brown - as unheralded titans of early '80s Chicago soul.

Review: Amazingly, it's five years since the last volume of the Strange Breaks & Mr Thing series, in which the London crate digger and turntablist gets to showcase the depth and diversity of his record collection. Predictably, this belated third installment is full of killer selections, from the low down funk of Dynamic Concept's "La Da Da" and steel band madness of Amral's Trinidad Cavalivers, to the jazz-funk goodness of Harry Beckett's "Ring Within Rings". Mr Thing shows his immense turntable skills on disc one, chopping and looping breaks while keeping things moving, while the second disc features unmixed versions of his ludicrously obscure selections. In a word: essential.

Review: Last year saw BBE call on Kev Beadle, a well respected digger, selector, radio host and label boss, to dust down his curation hat and put together Private Collection, his first compilation in almost two decades. Given the critical reception to that twelve track selection of independent jazz from the '70s and '80s it's little surprise to see BBE invite Beadle to dig through his personal archives for a second edition. Many of the tracks included here are the epitome of rare, given the fist airing outside the legendary club sessions that Beadle played back in the day and focuses more on the modal, spiritual and cosmic end of the jazz spectrum. A most enlightening collection from Mr Beadle.

Review: Back in 2012, Rush Hour boss Antal Heitlager put together a sublime collection of obscure Surinamese disco and boogie for sister label Kindred Spirits. Four years on, and with assistance from Thomas Gesthuizen, he presents the follow-up, Surinam Funk Force. Predictably, it's another fine set full of surprise gems and barely-known classics. While some tracks sound authentically American (see the deep and harmonious brilliance of Steve Watson's "Born To Boogie", and Surinam scene stalwart Sumy's eccentric, synth-laden "The Funky 'G' (Only Comes At Night)", some of the most potent cuts lean more heavily on traditional Surinamese music. In this camp you'll find the thrilling funk of Explosion's "Wakka Mang", and the off-kilter tropical disco-funk of Ronald Snijders' "Kaseko Attack".

Review: After a busy year that saw releases on Funkineven's Apron and Classic, Seven Davis Jr returns to London's Ninja Tune with a new LP, his second to date and a follow-up to this year's Wild Hearts EP for the same label. Universes is a stunning body of music comprised of fifteen tracks, all of which showcase Seven's many different styles and abilities behind the mixing desk...after all, it is called Universes! Our favourite moments have to be "Everybody Too Cool" because it reminds us of Outkast at their most daring, the off-kilter beats of "Karma", "Options" and its pseudo techno stance, and the abstract soul wails of "Fighters". Check it, there's plenty of goodness inside.

Formed in Tanzania in 1970, the band released a handful of 7" singles and a lone album, Ave Africa, developing a sound that blended Afro-rock, Zamrock, and the Caribbean-influenced fusion style, Kitoto. This Afro-Western-Caribbean fusion is explored extensively on this first career retrospective. While the set also includes tracks from a previously unissued radio session, it mostly mines their officially released output. Spiritual, inventive, intoxicating and entertaining, the music showcased on Ave Africa seems to inhabit a sound space all of its' own, but is rarely less than superb.

Review: Last year, Strut released a surprise new album from Ghanaian highlife legend Pat Thomas. Here, they look to the legendary vocalist and musician's vast back catalogue, showcasing music he produced or featured on between 1964 - when he was a member of the Broadway Dance Band - and 1981. It's pretty much a whirlwind trip through Ghanaian dance music history, with Thomas as the central attraction. As well as killer solo material - see the glistening guitars, bold bass and fluid drums of the juju-influenced "Awurade Mpaebo", the Moog-laden Afrobeat strut of "Yamona", and the slow burning soul of "Can't You See" - and tracks laid down with his various backing bands, the collection also features two previously unreleased collaborations with guitarist Ebo Taylor.

Review: Favorite Recordings' superb Disco Boogie Sounds series continues. Following Waxist's recent exploration of French productions from the period, they've decided to drop a second collection of high-grade Brazilian material. Renowned crate-digger Charles Maurice has done a terrific job of gathering together dusty, obscure cuts that perfectly encapsulate Brazilian musicians' sun-kissed, soulful approach to disco and boogie. Highlights are naturally plentiful, and include the starry, jazz-funk tinged warmth of Christina Camargo's "Minas Do Rei Salomao", the Chic style brilliance of Almir Ricardi's "To Parado Na Tua", and the cosmic, horn-heavy leftfield disco thrills of Kaito's "Cara Feia".

Review: Belleruche's new album, "Turntable Soul Music", includes tracks that conjure thoughts of Stax Records recording Django Rheinhardt with Dr Dre controlling the mixing desk, or Eryka Badu jamming with Mixmaster Mike recorded onto analogue tape by the Dust Brothers. Regardless, this Tru Thoughts release is amazing.

For their latest trawl through the back catalogues of legendary labels Epic, Arista, Philadelphia International and RCA Victor, SonyBMG has handed over the reins to noted re-editor and crate-digger DJ Reverend P.

Review: Having re-invented himself as the UK's favourite funk and soul selector via shows on BBC 6 Music, comedy actor-turned-Corrie cab driver Craig Charles brings his wildly successful Funk & Soul Club brand to CD for the first time. Pitched at newcomers rather than confirmed diggers, it features a mix of well known nu-funk floor fillers (The Apples' version of RATM's "Killing In The Name", Nostalgia 77's ubiquitous White Stripes cover), lesser-known cuts from modern soul 'names' (Speedometer, The Haggis Horns, The Bamboos), older gems (Al Wilson, Incredible Bongo Band), a dash of reggae and a few curveballs (Treva Whateva's long-forgotten banger "Singalong"). Good times guaranteed.

Review: Thanks to his BBC 6Music show, self-styled "complete package" - comic, actor, radio presenter, DJ and stand-up poet - Craig Charles has become the UK's best-known funk and soul enthusiast. It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that his annual Funk & Soul Club compilations are extremely popular. This third collection is every bit as potent as predecessors, featuring as it does a riotous mix of heavy funk, horn-totin' soul revivalism, dancefloor-friendly funk breaks (Skeewiff and Stephen Gray), cheeky brass band workouts (Hot 8 Brass Band's famous cover of "Sexual Healing") and a dash of smooth soul (the effortless Omar). With all bases covered and some killer material, it should be essential listening for all those of a soul and funk persuasion.
