Review: Over a career that spanned three decades, Fruko E Sus Tesos became one of the most successful salsa outfits worldwide. When they recorded and released debut album Tesura in 1970, though, they were barely known outside of their native Colombia. The album has been hard to find for years, so this officially licensed reissue is something of a saviour for those DJs and collectors who dig authentic South American salsa. Highlights include the jaunty title track, whose muted trumpet lines wrap themselves around bubbly piano lines and fluid percussion, the loose, jazz-influenced punch of "Improvisando" and the cheery dancefloor sunshine of "Materilerileron".

  1. Rude Movements (part I) (4:01)

Review: For those keen on early '80s jazz-funk explorations, the first 12" from Mike Collins' Sun Palace combo, 1983's hard-to-find Winning, has long been at the top of the wants list. Happily, BBE has decided to make the in-demand B-side, "Rude Movements", available again via a tasty, Record Store Day 7" single. To fit the restricted playing time of the format, Collins has expertly split the original into two parts, subtly re-editing a few parts in the bargain. The results are sublime, with the glistening guitar solos, spacey synths and lo-fi drum machine hits of "Part I" just edging out the hazier "Part II".

Review: Following 2012's fourth volume that celebrated the existential work of Tim Maia, here we find Luaka Bop exploring the legacy of William Onyeabor. A high chief and Kenyan diplomat who allegedly refuses to discuss his music, he self-released eight albums in the 70s and 80s and these are some of the many highlights. Stretching from the New York-influenced post-punk synth funk of "Good Name" to the most authentic Afro fusion of "Why Go To War", Onyeabor's range not only reflects his clear creative skill, but also the ever-developing international language of music during the fruitful period he was active. Who is William Onyeabor? Press play and find out yourselves...

Review: Crate-digging reissue specialists Africa Seven has decided to flip the script on this fantastic album, asking a range of contemporary producers to "re-imagine" a string of rare soul, funk, Afrobeat and disco jams. Thrillingly for those who remember the original West London broken beat scene, the comp contains some killer "bruk" revisions - not least Silkie's brilliantly fluid and groovy take on Ekambi Brillant's "Soul Castle" and EVM's rolling, Bugz in the Attic style revision of M'Bamina's "Mosi Zole". Elsewhere, Appleblim delivers a typically fuzzy and bass heavy rework of Sorry Bamba, Dj Food chops up Sookie's organ-laden funk slammer "Rhythm on Rhythm" an IDM heroes Plaid join the dots between vintage African jazz and woozy electronica. In a word: superb.

Review: Will "Quantic" Holland has enjoyed a long love affair with the music of Colombia, establishing various live acts that pay tribute to the steamy, sweat-soaked sounds of the South American nation. His latest project sees him join forces with singer/songwriter India Gongora to deliver a set inspired by the "Pacific music" variant of Colombian dance culture. The result is a set of songs that sound distinctively Colombian, with tropical guitars, indigenous instrumentation and Gongora's wonderfully laidback vocals being joined by rhythms, bassline and electronics that bring a traditional style bang up to date. The double vinyl set also includes a few forays into more Caribbean territory, including the brilliant "Dub Del Pacifico (Version)".

Review: The funk dust from Bahama Soul Club's fourth studio album Havana 58 has barely had a moment to settle and along comes an equally timeless collection of versions. In keeping with the original spirit, the full soul range is explored but done so with a much firmer focus on the dancefloor; ZouZouElectric's dubby house glimmers on "Tropicana Flight", Opolopo's sweet shuffled jack on "Dizzy's Bounce" and Suonho's sultry piano-primed disco are just three of the nine awesome sunkissed twists crammed onto the 180 gram vinyl. Perfectly timed for the summer, too...

Review: Like deep funk? Then you'd surely know of the legendary Keb Darge: the Scottish DJ who invented the term. Known as a leading authority on funk and soul music of the 1960s and beyond, he went from modest beginnings in Wigan, before moving to London in the '70s, bringing the sounds of Northern Soul to punters in the capital. Namely His 'Legendary Deep Funk' night at Soho's seminal strip club turned music venue Madame Jojo's. Following up his last compilation put together with Paul Weller; 2009's Lost & Found (Real R'N'B & Soul) LP, Darge presents hits from the 'Deep Funk' series to celebrate BBE's 20th year. Diggers will most certainly appreciate appearances on here such as Soul Drifter's "Funky Brother", Kenny Dope's edit of Family Of Eve's much sampled "I Wanna Be Loved By You", Joe Washington's "Blueberry Hill" and the classic "Love Call" by Ramsay and Company amongst many others.

Review: In afrobeat circles, Ghanaian highlife guitarist Ebo Taylor has long been regarded as one of the scene's most undervalued talents. During his golden period during the 1970s, Taylor was responsible for some landmark recordings - not just as an artist, but composer, arranger and producer. This comprehensive set from serial crate-diggers Strut revisits that fertile period, gathering together the best of Taylor's solo, collaborative and production work. For those with a passing interest in afrobeat and highlife, it's near-essential. Highlights come thick and fast, from the strangely spaced-out grooves of "Peace On Earth" and lazy afro jazz-funk of "Ohiana Sua Efir" to the epic American R&B stylings of "Aba Yaa".

Review: The Magic Forest dwelling record collectors better known as Psychemagik return to Claremont56 offshoot Leng with a new compilation Magik Sunrise which is essentially a vinyl shaped sequel to last year's well received Magik Cyrkles. Though equally well presented as that compilation, Psychemagik refreshingly adopt a different sonic direction here, trading in the obscure Balearica and funk in favour of a wonderfully enlightening blend of African reggae, jazz-funk, prog rock, folk and New Age curios. Think David Holmes classic Essential Mix then crank up the weird factor to eleven and you'll have a good idea of what to expect from this fifteen track selection. The sensual twilight boogie of "The Juggler" by Fox is a particular highlight.

For some time, that set has been in-demand amongst soul and disco collectors, with pristine copies changing hands for hundreds online. Happily, Expansions have put together this licensed reissue. Review: There's a reason original pressings of this fetch a few hundred bucks a time; Don Blackman's debut album is an authentic and pivotal black music record. At points understated, at others raw hip-hop, this captures both the skills of a prolific musician and exciting moment in musical history. The Parliament-meets-art-rock sleaze of "Deaf Hook Up Connection", the bonafide block party boogie of "Yabba Dabba Do", the future funk fizz of "You Ain't Hip" and the silky rare groove of "Never Miss A Thing" are just a few of the magic moments crafted and captured by Blackman right here. Review: Soundway surpass themselves again with this wonderful reissue from the Ghanaian artist Rob, who released two albums back in 1977 for the West African Essiebons label. Rob was a seasoned musician in the 70?s, having recorded and toured with many well known bands. The album is a somewhat Spartan, brooding affair where less is most definitely more as slow burning, hip swaying cosmic funk drenched compositions are offset by wonderful punchy brass arrangements. A slow burning pulse is present throughout with highlights being ''Loose up Yourself'' and the irreplaceable carnal conquest anthem '' Make it Fast, Make it Slow''. Songs of celebration sit alongside other pieces of introspection and socially conscious topics; some might criticise the odd duff notes and occasional raw vocal edge, but this just adds texture to the overall performance and vibe. Without question one of the best reissues of 2012.

Review: Back in 2012, Will "Quantic" Holland joined forces with Colombian musician Mario Galeano to form Ondatropica. The eponymous debut album that followed was quietly impressive, fusing traditional South American styles - cumbia, champeta etc. - with elements of hip-hop and funk, with the assistance of musicians from the vibrant Colombian scene. For this belated follow-up, the duo has tweaked the formula slightly, incorporating more from the Caribbean and African influences that have seeped into the music made around Bogota and Old Providence Island. While the palette of influences made be broader, the resultant music is every bit as enjoyable and entertaining as that found on its predecessor.

Review: We've been steadily teased by Bastard Jazz with a slow flow of singles but the time has come to reveal B Bravo's whole debut album... And he hasn't disappointed. A supreme cosmic boogie experience throughout, Bravo flexes around the funk/house/hip-hop axis with sunshine synths, loose swinging drums, heavyweight talkbox action and oodles of funk and timely displays of sensitivity. Highlights that really showcase the soul spectrum B Bravo explores range from the Chromeo-style party jam "I'm For Real" to the horn-hazed tinkling "LA Nights" to the dreamy west coast house struts and wriggles of "Summer Love". Sure fire summer silver lining.

Review: The original Mothers Records & The Snarf Company release of Spanky Wilson's 1969 sophomore set Doin' It has long been an in-demand item on the funk collecting scene. Happily, Soul Brother has decided to give the LP a warranted reissue. Presented in near identical artwork with the same killer line-up of tracks, it sees a then young Wilson wrap her ling-busting vocals around a range of hot-to-trot funk and soul grooves. Highlights include the soul singer's brilliant - and much-played - cover of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love", the deep and evocative "Loveland", the raw torch song "That's What a Woman Should Give To a Man" and the rip-roaring heavy funk business that is "You". Also worth checking is Wilson's often overlooked cover version of the Doors' "Light My Fire".

Review: Having teased us with a reissued 45 a few months back, Aloha Got Soul now present Aura's full and only album. Hawaiian soul legends who really should have experienced much more spotlight time, their laid back disco soul still punches with raw funk and finesse almost 40 years later. The insane doubled-up bass runs and tight horns of "Magic Lover", the turbo disco struts of "I'll Remember You", the fly-by-night, freeform psychedelia of "No Beginning, No End" and the hazy jazz horn swirls of "Winds Of Love". The whole body of work captures of picture perfect moment in soul that's been criminally overlooked for decades.

Review: David Hanke is a man known for his wild and illustrious array of aliases. Through the years, he's appeared under the names Black Soyls, Madball Scientists, Mankoora and Rengades Of Jazz, among many others. Dem Juju Poets is his latest creation and, needless to say, it is perhaps his most accomplished and mature project to date. We don't want to take anything away from his previous productions but there's just something utterly fluid about this latest reincarnation. Matasuna is the new label to launch this new Liberated Thoughts LP, and we're sure this will go down a storm with all the jazz-funk crew, particularly the followers of Giles Peterson's DJ sound. Hanke's approach is playful and diverse, branching out into all sorts of jazzy vibrations that are tied together by funky, off-kilter outernational vibes. Plenty of breaks, bass bumps, and party moves for all sorts of vinyl playaz - oh boy, check those horns on the masterful "People's Republic"!

Review: There's been a great swell of Tim Maia celebration over the last few years with various album reissues from the likes of Oficial Arquivos and Polysom. Now Cultura Racional join the party and curate a seriously sharp collection of his Portuguese material that stretches across Maia's hugely prolific 30+ album career. From the hazy blues of "Balanco" to his hip-flaring freaky disco funk of "Voce" and the heartfelt sunset street ballad "Ela Partiu", Tim's open mind to progression and innate sense of funk and soul throughout the 70s is portrayed in great detail and breadth. Long may the celebrations continue.

Diana Ross's "Stormy", Dusty Springfield's "Live It Up", Fankie Valli's "The Night", The Flirations' "Nothing But A Heartache", the list really does go on. Stone cold classics.

Review: Back in 2012, Rush Hour boss Antal Heitlager put together a sublime collection of obscure Surinamese disco and boogie for sister label Kindred Spirits. Four years on, and with assistance from Thomas Gesthuizen, he presents the follow-up, Surinam Funk Force. Predictably, it's another fine set full of surprise gems and barely-known classics. While some tracks sound authentically American (see the deep and harmonious brilliance of Steve Watson's "Born To Boogie", and Surinam scene stalwart Sumy's eccentric, synth-laden "The Funky 'G' (Only Comes At Night)", some of the most potent cuts lean more heavily on traditional Surinamese music. In this camp you'll find the thrilling funk of Explosion's "Wakka Mang", and the off-kilter tropical disco-funk of Ronald Snijders' "Kaseko Attack".
