Review: Serious reissue business: Be With take us back to 1971 for Air's one and only album. The brainchild of Googe Coppola (who you may recognise from Fire Island or cameos with Jeremy Steig) and her partner in jazz Tom Coppola, you can hear vapour trails of the pastoral, laidback folk of the late '60s with a more forthright funk energy and jazz mindset as the lovers and their bandmates dazzle us with meandering melodies and stories; from The Doors level organ frenzy of "Baby I Don't Know Where I Love" to the galloping momentum of "In Our Time" that suddenly stops dead into an almost medieval breakdown by way of ballads such as "Sister Bessie" and Afrobeat-style horn chaos like "Lipstick", this really captures an exciting time in music and, if the music is as honest as it seems, a rather exciting time in the lives of the Coppolas too...

Review: Odion Iruoje aka Sound President was one of Nigeria's top producers in the 1970s and early '80s, but his solo recording career was restricted to just the one release, Down To Earth. Originally released on Iruoje's own label, Odion Ltd, in 1983, it was only ever distributed in small quantities and Soundway Records have given this much needed re-issue. Iruoje is known for having signed the legendary Fela Kuti to major label EMI and acting as his producer throughout the early '70s. Starting out with the proto funk rap cut "Identify With Your Root (Which One You De?)", there's some killer West African boogie-funk-soulfulness on "Ikebe" and some feel good disco vibes; Lagos style on "Love Care".

Review: Few bands out there are more worthy of belonging in the canon of appropriately-named acts than The Funkees. Formed in the aftermath of the Biafran Civil War in Nigeria to raise spirits, the band swiftly conquered the dancefloors of Nigeria and were soon off to London to achieve similar feats at Ronnie Scott's and other such legendary venues. Originally released in 1976, Now I'm A Man was the band's second LP and captured the Nigerian troupe three years into their London-era pomp, delivering a vibrant eight-track salvo of psychedelically-charged music that tightly fused afro, funk, rock, disco and more. Austrian archivists PMG step up with a timely reissue that reminds us just how damn funkee The Funkees were - the jungle bongo of "Salam" and straight-up party jam of "Dance With Me" being particular highlights.

Review: Pure Ghanaian gold, Disco Documentary: Full Of Funk was a rare private press released in 1979 never to be released again... Until now. Dusting off the long lost tapes with due care and attention, BBE have kindly reminded us that disco had much wider impact than the US and Europe. Nana Love's slightly nasal tones are instantly alluring, but it's the clam-tight musicianship that really bites. Big Bernard Edwards bass, shiny guitar twangs, extensive organ noodling and vibrant Afrofunk horns galore, this is a truly stunning document.

Review: Having explored the rich heritage of Nigeria and Ghana with well researched vigour, Soundway turn to Kenya for their next adventure... A rare insight: while Lagos was churning out seminal Afrobeat compositions, Kenya took to western influences in a much subtler fashion. With heavy emphasis on the Kenyan benga and Afro-Cuban rumba there's a much deeper, local folk presentation and format throughout most of the selection. Complete with detailed notes and beautiful presentation (like all Soundway compendiums) this won't look out of place in any collection.

Review: In terms of being an afrobeat legend, Pasteur Lappe is Cameroon's Fela Kuti, an unsung hero who was ahead of the game back in the 1970s and 1980s, and one whose been famous for burning the pockets of many diggers nowadays. Luckily, Africa Seven have compiled some of his best work onto a ten-track LP, ranging from the funky oddities of "More Sekele Movement" or "Na Real Seke Fo'ya", to the future-zouk sound of "Sanaga Calypso", and plenty of jazzy, popped-out, disgruntled soulfulness to satisfy anyone from Gilles Peterson to Cherrystones. Heavy and warmly recommended.

Review: 1983's Rive Gauche by Philippe Chany has been lost in the depths of time and, until now, many greedy second-hand sharks have been keeping its price way up high. This little synth-pop marvel is a sampler's dream, containing beautiful riffs here and there, and what is most alluring about it is its total detachment from any one genre. In fact, there are noticeable touches of all things Balearic in here, and many of its tunes could the perfect accompaniment to disco, boogie or even expansive DJ sets. With a little subtle nod to funk, Chany's album is one of those veritable one-offs, the sort of albums that are in a category of their own. A stunning reissue, once again, by Dark Entries.

Review: We've always been big fans of Delroy Edwards. But, we don't only rate his music; we love his attitude and the way in which he's gone about releasing material through his own LA Club Resource imprint. Whether it be grainy, maladjusted techno or noise and distorted juke, he has managed to build a concrete sound aesthetic for himself. Moreover, we love the fact that he's waited until now to drop his debut album instead of going in too early and risking to dilute his talents because of pressure from the scene of which he's part of, a scene which expects instant gratification and albums from the start. Hanging At The Beach has been described by Edwards himself as the most personal work he's done to date, and it truly sounds like the artist has space to play and get his mood across correctly throughout its thirty cuts. These range from his signature house sound, through to lo-Fi drum machine sketches and fine segments of power electronics. This one comes hugely recommended, so just hit that DL button.

Review: As celebrations of Miami's legendary TK Disco label go, this is rather special. The first disc sees notable New York DJ/producer Danny Krivit deliver a smooth, entertaining mix of label favourites, moving from the laidback, soulful shuffle of Peter Brown's for your love, to the upbeat, solo-heavy disco stomp of Wild Honey's "At The Top Of The Stairs", via killer cuts from the likes of Quartz, Ralph McDonald and Fern Kinney. The real heat, though, is on disc two, which gathers together 10 unmixed, full-length Krivit edits of superb TK cuts from Hokis Pokis, Jo Bisso, Jimmy McGriff and Betty Wright.

Review:  DJ Spinna is known for many things; his productions, sublime DJ mixes and many a hip hop classic as half of Jigmastas. He's also a complete Stevie Wonder obsessive who runs a popular Stevie-themed club night called Wonderful. A series of albums that expand on the party's concept was a logical next step and The Wonder Of Stevie now arrives at a third volume. This edition has clearly been painstakingly curated by Spinna and BBE, consisting of other people's covers of the man's work. Highlights include sweet and sugary 'Buttercup" by The Jackson 5, the bluesy honky tonk jam "It's My Pleasure" by Billy Preston and Quincy Jones' pure liquid funk version of "Betcha' Wouldn't Hurt Me".

Review: One of many essential K&A compendiums, Off Track Volume 2: Queens was originally released in 2008. The second in their companion series to their career-making On Track series, it's yet another digging exercise that is so deep you wouldn't be surprised at the sight of a huge oil gush. Ranging from psychedelic jazz (Bob Brault Org) and fuzzy lo-fi hammond-bashing samba (Super Boire Band) to straight up hip-shifting disco (Sweet Touch) to soul-warming African folk (De Porto Novo Dahomey) and complete with a peppering of their own edits, no one does collections like Kon & Amir. If this isn't already in your collection you know what to do.

Review: Following BBE's release the Chicago troupe's Devil Made Me Do It earlier this year, Athens Of The North ensure the criminally over-looked/under-paid band continue to remain in the spotlight with an entire album of unreleased material. Recently excavated from a Chicago warehouse, complete with masters, the songs were written and recorded in the mid '70s not long before the band eventually split. If you know their material, you'll already know how funky the band are. If not, dig deep at the soonest opportunity. From the toxic-levels of cosmic funk on "Boogie" to the dreamier, space ballad "Dark Moon", this is the sound of a super-tight, incredibly talented funk band who really should have been up there with Cymande or Average White Band.

Review: Classic jazz funk album from the legendary Johnny 'Hammond' Smith with a special version with six previously unissued bonus out-takes. Released in 1975 and his 32nd long player, it heralded a fresh chapter in his career that saw him exploring more electronic instrumentation and deeper shades of funk in a similar way to Roy Ayers or Bob James. The result was a timeless document that carries motifs of many of today's artists; the harmonies of "Can't We Smile?", for instance, smack of Plantlife while the punctuated piano work and mirrored squiggling synths on "Song For The Family" echoes with Flying Lotus-style whim. Also a key source of breaks for many junglists, Gears is a historic document that's not only played a strong role in electronic music but still sounds incredible today.

Review: Soundway surpass themselves again with this wonderful reissue from the Ghanaian artist Rob, who released two albums back in 1977 for the West African Essiebons label. Rob was a seasoned musician in the 70?s, having recorded and toured with many well known bands. The album is a somewhat Spartan, brooding affair where less is most definitely more as slow burning, hip swaying cosmic funk drenched compositions are offset by wonderful punchy brass arrangements. A slow burning pulse is present throughout with highlights being ''Loose up Yourself'' and the irreplaceable carnal conquest anthem '' Make it Fast, Make it Slow''. Songs of celebration sit alongside other pieces of introspection and socially conscious topics; some might criticise the odd duff notes and occasional raw vocal edge, but this just adds texture to the overall performance and vibe. Without question one of the best reissues of 2012 so far.

Review: The destination here is late '70s Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica and the Bahamas. Like every other corner of the world at the time, the Caribbean quarters were busy writing their own chapter in the endless annals of the Disco bible. Tropical Disco Hustle documents the movement in great detail across two slabs of vinyl. Loaded with rarities and sun-kissed specials, highlights include the straight-up-sing-along "Instant Funk", Waxist Selecta's on-point edit of the awesome "Rappers Delight" reggae cover and Wild Fire's rootsy, stripped back sermon "Living On A String". Juicy and groove-quenching, Tropical Disco Hustle hits the spot in the most refreshing of ways.

Review: Banda Black Rio were and still are an incredibly influential jazz-dance band from Brazil. Their three albums have been in any serious digger's back since then and, more recently, they've seen a renewed interest thanks to iconic British collectors and DJs such as Gilles Peterson and the rest of the London fusion crew. Maria Fumaca's tracks are the perfect balance between funk, jazz and disco, blending all three in one perfect shape for both the dancers and the armchair listeners. Tunes like "Na Baixa Do Sepateiro" focus on drums and hypnotic guitar solos, while others like "Caminho Da Roca" go deeper into the jazz end of the spectrum but still retain enough Brazilian tropical flare to make them an absolute pleasure on the dancefloors. A much recommended reissue, and one that would have cost you a fortune up until now. Mr Bongo in the place.

Review: Released at the start of 2015, the inaugural Africa Airways collection was so successful it was repressed twice. Naturally this sophomore compendium of long-lost pan-African deep funk gems is equally as satisfying and enlightening. Ranging from the illustrious strings and tight disco groove of Ivory Coast's M'Bamina to the swooning vocals and arresting charge of Bongi Makeba by way of her mother mama Africa Myriam Makeba who closes the show with the tight pounding groove and commercial command "Toyota Fantasy", it's yet another triumphant collection for Africa Seven. Watch out for the Dutch anomaly mid-way; Oscar Harris's awesomely titled (and James Brown referencing) "Relax... Before Doing Sex" is guaranteed to light some fires whenever and wherever it's aired.

Review: During military service with the Nigerian military in 1978, former Fela Kuti collaborators Ojo Okeji and Abayomi "Easy" Adio decided to form a new band. Featuring other musicians recruited from within the ranks of the 6th Infantry Brigade of the Nigerian Army, the Shango Dance Band recorded an eponymous debut album that was only ever available to other military personnel. Here, it gets a first worldwide reissue. Similar in ethos to the Afrobeat sound the duo had helped Fela develop - but with extra layers of guitar, percussion, and gravel-throated U.S soul style vocals - Shango Dance Band is as potent and funky as anything released in Nigeria during the period. Thanks to the excellent Comb & Razor Sound, it's no longer a hidden classic.

Review: Amazingly, it's five years since the last volume of the Strange Breaks & Mr Thing series, in which the London crate digger and turntablist gets to showcase the depth and diversity of his record collection. Predictably, this belated third installment is full of killer selections, from the low down funk of Dynamic Concept's "La Da Da" and steel band madness of Amral's Trinidad Cavalivers, to the jazz-funk goodness of Harry Beckett's "Ring Within Rings". Mr Thing shows his immense turntable skills on disc one, chopping and looping breaks while keeping things moving, while the second disc features unmixed versions of his ludicrously obscure selections. In a word: essential.

Review: It doesn't seem like five years since BBE last invited London crate digger and turntablist Mr Thing to get his fingers dusty by picking out gems from his record collection for the Strange Breaks & Mr Thing series. Predictably, this belated third installment is full of killer selections that lives up to it's subtitled billing as More Rock Funk Soul Jazz & Soundtrack Breaks For Modern Living. Favourites come thick and fast though the low down funk of Dynamic Concept's "La Da Da" and the jazz-funk goodness of Harry Beckett's "Ring Within Rings" stand out upon first listen. The cats at BBE spare no expense either with this vinyl edition that features fifteen cuts spread across the two slabs, and there's also Mr Thing's peerless mix available on a CD that's slipped in too.

Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from Lack of Afro, AKA veteran funk, soul and hip-hop producer Adam Gibbons. This fourth studio album for regular home Freestyle Records is being pitched as his most eclectic yet. Certainly, there's plenty of variety in the textures, styles and tempos, from the disco-funk stomp of Herbal T hook-up "Brown Sugar" and sweet Northern Soul blast of "The Contender" (all fuzzy guitars and pleasing horns), to the soft soul shuffle of "Making It Right" and Breakestra-ish hip-hop funk of "Here We Go Again". Despite the variety, Gibbons is still at his best when really cutting loose, as the superb opener "Freedom" adeptly demonstrates.

Review: Gwen McRae 1974 album debut either goes by the name of Rockin' Chair or is catalogued under the artist's own name. This reissue from Cat goes for the former, but that doesn't make one fraction of a difference to how iconic and recommended this foundational jazz-fusion LP is; to put it simply, it's up there with all your Herbies and Idris', but perhaps a little more soulful thanks to McRae's singular voice. "Rockin Chair" alone is enough to buy this album, but "Move Me Baby" is another stellar piece of rocked-out soul, and our favourite has to be "For Your Love" - it's a powerful love ballad that is both timeless and impossible to criticize...whether soul is for you or not, you can't touch this. A huge album that should be on everyone's shelf.

  16. Roger Roger/Nino Nardini - "Beyond The Clouds" (2:07)
Review: Space Oddities (1972 - 1982) are the results of Frenchman Georges Achille Teperino aka Nino Nardini, fellow countryman Roger Roger and German Eddie Warner's collaborations over ten years at Ganaro recording studio. Given some underground recognition in the late nineties by the likes of Barry 7 of Add N to (X) (with his Connectors series) or UK electronica legend Luke Vibert, they can now add Alexis Le-Tan (Les Edits Du Golem) and Jess as devotees, who made the effort of compiling the release. As Born Bad stated quite succinctly, the trio used their "strange instruments to sketch out the beginnings of something that resembled the future of music. This collection presents some of the highlights from their light-hearted, electronic pop sessions."

Review: Fans of James Mason classics like "Sweet Power, Your Embrace" and "I Want Your Love" pay attention! Recollection Echo is an album of previously unreleased cuts from the jazz funk icon which was originally trailed last year by a blinding 12" on Rush Hour and then released only in Japan through Shout Records on CD. It now appears on the format disco and soul selectors everywhere have been craving and boy does it sound good. Funked up from the off, there are some delicious moog touches to "The Love Song" whilst the laidback soulful cuts like "Space Walking" and "I've Got Your Love" are truly complemented by the moments where Mason embraces the dancefloor - "Cool Out" and "Up Jump" being highlights of this.

Review: Last year saw BBE call on Kev Beadle, a well respected digger, selector, radio host and label boss, to dust down his curation hat and put together Private Collection, his first compilation in almost two decades. Given the critical reception to that twelve track selection of independent jazz from the '70s and '80s it's little surprise to see BBE invite Beadle to dig through his personal archives for a second edition. Many of the tracks included here are the epitome of rare, given the fist airing outside the legendary club sessions that Beadle played back in the day and focuses more on the modal, spiritual and cosmic end of the jazz spectrum. A most enlightening collection from Mr Beadle.

Review: Only 300 pressed !! Unmissable modern funk from Shane Hunt: previously famed for his Sharpshooters group, and his Soundbwoy Reggae Breaks series prior to that, here Shane and his troupe create an authentic analogue recording that's ultimately timeless. From the Carole King cover "It's Too Late" to the dubby textures of "Lookout Weekend" via the broader than broad Barrington cover "Here I Come", The Excelsiors join the dots between funk, soul, northern soul and reggae with rawness, attitude and total attention to detail.

Review: Founded in the early '70s by karaoke's accidental inventor Irv Kratka, Inner City Records's stamp on jazz was one of the strongest during its 15 year tenure. Paying respect to traditional and fusion, it caught the world's attention and admiration in a very special way. Super-Intendant selector Kev Beadle was one of its most influential pushers on this side of the pond, so he's the perfect man to select and secure the 14 label-defining classics you hear right here. A great starting point for any Inner City starter and a well-considered, dynamic collection for collectivists, this captures a unique moment in jazz that still sparkles and pops to this day.
