Review: Perhaps a lurch into the direction of head-spinning psychedelic guitar-driven groove wasn't where fans of DJ Format expected him to go next, but this compilation is proof positive that this man will doggedly pursue the funkiest of sound to the ends of the earth and the very edge of sanity. Collecting together gems from all over the globe, including such far-flung quarters as Uruguay and Yugoslavia, he creates a dizzying and ecstatically fuzzed-out melange that has no problem with jumping off the audial deep end in the pursuit of oblivion and ecstasy. Both a heady triumph and a cleansing experience for the third eye.

Review: 1983's Rive Gauche by Philippe Chany has been lost in the depths of time and, until now, many greedy second-hand sharks have been keeping its price way up high. This little synth-pop marvel is a sampler's dream, containing beautiful riffs here and there, and what is most alluring about it is its total detachment from any one genre. In fact, there are noticeable touches of all things Balearic in here, and many of its tunes could the perfect accompaniment to disco, boogie or even expansive DJ sets. With a little subtle nod to funk, Chany's album is one of those veritable one-offs, the sort of albums that are in a category of their own. A stunning reissue, once again, by Dark Entries.

Review: Incredible funk scenes from Ghana 1976: comprising members and collaborators of Ebo Taylor, Uhuru Dance Band and Sweet Beans, Pat Thomas formed Marijata a band that really captured western funk and soul with characteristic subtlety; moments such as the rock-steady reggae of "My Love Will Shine", the carnival jazz of "That's The Way" and Zeppelin-style bluesy rock of "Brain Washing" are executed with such authenticity and vibrancy they really do position Pat's troupe in the Afrofunk premiership during their tenure.

Review: During the mid 1980s, there were few more vibrant venues in London than the iconic Wag Club. While the club's musical offering was wide, between 1983 and '87 it became closely associated with the capital's Rare Groove, disco and jazz-dance scenes. It's this aspect of the club's history that Chris Sullivan explores on Wag: Iconic Tunes From The Wag Club 1983-87. Over the course of four discs, Sullivan has gathered together some superb cuts. While the epic tracklist is undeniably weighted towards fairly well known scene anthems (think party-starters from James Brown, Dinosaur L, Aaron Neville, Cerrone, Digital Underground and Ray Buretto, for starters), Sullivan has wisely thrown in a few forgotten, or recently overlooked gems.

Review: Napoleon Cherry is perhaps not the unknown name that Music From Memory excels at celebrating - PPU released a 12" of his brilliantly low-key soul workout "When You Had The Chance" earlier this year - but the Philadelphian musician's releases are certainly suitably hard to find. This career retrospective offers a mix of impossible-to-find tracks, many from his deliciously rare 1990 debut full-length, and previously unheard cuts. It portrays Cherry as a master of warm, evocative, Balearic soul and lo-fi synthesizer funk, whose analogue-rich releases were always out-of-step with the musical trends developing around him. Crucially, all 10 of these tracks are superb, making Walk Alone yet another essential Music From Memory purchase.

Review: New York City label Ostinato Records make their impressive debut with this compilation of Haitian Jazz and Electric Folklore spanning two decades from the sixties onwards. Allegedly compiled from an array of private collections and radio archives in Brooklyn and several digging trips throughout Haiti, this 20-track selection offers an intriguing overview of the country's musical diversity in this period. Musical innovation is matched by percussive potency as Ostinato tell the story of a "vibrant laboratory of colliding influences" in the best way possible; with some truly delightful music! You can totally see "Pele Rein" by Les Loups Noirs getting played by Floating Points down Brilliant Corners. They also include a 20 page liner note booklet with vintage photographs mined across Haiti and its vast diaspora, an essay by a scholar of traditional Haitian Vodou rhythms at the School of Arts in Port au Prince, a history of the Haitian sound, and interviews with key figures of the forgotten scene.

Review: Music From Memory is a new label founded by Redlight Records duo Tako Reyenga and Abel Nagenast and fellow Amsterdam dweller Jamie Tiller and arrives with the mission statement "Giving overlooked and unreleased music that we love a second chance." Whilst there are plenty of labels going down the reissue path with varying degrees of musical integrity, its clear this trio have the best intentions at heart and their debut releases sets the bar truly high. The ocean loving Rhode Island based keyboardist and singer song writer Leon Lowman self released a series of albums in the early 80s dedicated to his hometown and the various women he tried to woo during this period. Executed as lo-fi beach funk and lazy synth jams in a manner that sounds way ahead of it's time, Lowman's work never received the wider acclaim it truly deserves and these albums have become highly sought after curios (check the Discogs listings for his debut LP Syntheseas) Material from both his 1980s albums features on Liquid Diamonds along with unreleased material that Lowman recorded at the time and this 12 track collection is likely to prove very popular with the musical historians out there!

Review: Another superb and intricately detailed document from Strut's dedicated archivists, Sunburst's short but hugely prolific activity between '73 and '76 is captured here in all its melting pot glory. Not just their one and only album but all 45s and unreleased recordings too. With six members from across the continent, the fusion, ideas and energy is palpable... Especially on full-screen tracks such as "Kamungulwe" where blues, rock and Tanzanian folk bubble and pop to a climax and "Alhamdullilah" stomps with a sweaty theatrical rock while "Ave Africa" finds the perfect merging point between Afrobeat and jazz. The band's live pedigree is also full screen with that rawness to the recordings that feels like they're in the same room. Addictively rich.

Review: Released at the start of 2015, the inaugural Africa Airways collection was so successful it was repressed twice. Naturally this sophomore compendium of long-lost pan-African deep funk gems is equally as satisfying and enlightening. Ranging from the illustrious strings and tight disco groove of Ivory Coast's M'Bamina to the swooning vocals and arresting charge of Bongi Makeba by way of her mother mama Africa Myriam Makeba who closes the show with the tight pounding groove and commercial command "Toyota Fantasy", it's yet another triumphant collection for Africa Seven. Watch out for the Dutch anomaly mid-way; Oscar Harris's awesomely titled (and James Brown referencing) "Relax... Before Doing Sex" is guaranteed to light some fires whenever and wherever it's aired.

Review: Disco-edged Afro funk by way of Milan, M'Bamina - comprising members from Congo, Benin and Cameroon - enjoyed a 12 year run from the early '70s to the mid-'80s, working with and supporting some of the biggest names possible from James Brown to Manu Dibango. Experimental is their second album (1978) and shows them really finding their groove and some incredibly tight musicianship. Prime examples of their unique funk melting pot include the sudden switches between epic Afro horn blasts and lolloping disco bassline of "Mosi Zole", the glistening universal folk-soul of "Mambu" and the frenetic guitars on the sweaty party blazer "Mamy". All of which still hits hard almost 40 years since it was first recorded.

Review: A phenomenal two-track album from 1970 that was - and still is - ground-breaking in its complexity. A full orchestra of drums, led by Klaus Weiss but also featuring the likes of Uno Lindenberg and Keith Forsey, the whole journey is a percussive odyssey peppered with a little post-studio magic. At points intense, at others deep and meditative, there's a reason why this was going for upwards of L200 before the repress.

Review: Some 13 years after the first volume we find ourselves at Volume 5 of Spinna's Strange Games & Funky Things series. Rare gems and well trodden classics of 70s rare groove, disco, funk and soul are all given a new lease of life; there's out and out floor fillers in the shape of Richard Evans' "Capricorn Risin" to Brazilian classics like ''Ramons Desire'' by Franisco Aguabella. Elsewhere you'll find string laden disco with ''For The Love Of Money'' by The Philly Armada Orchestra and jazz fusion with Hiroshi Fukumura's ''Hunt Up Wind'' and a barrage of lesser known classics .Sample spotters will have a field day whilst the rest of us will just immerse ourselves in two slabs of wax filled to the brim with sublime and classic grooves of days gone by. Review: As someone who briefly escaped 70's Glasgow and got a taste of the golden age of NYC Disco, Al Kent is a perfect choice to lead you through a classy selection of some choice and rare Disco treats. Having used his huge collection in the past for re-edits and originals, he also took the bold step of forming his own band in 2007 under the name The Million Dollar Orchestra.

The selections here reflect the point at which Funk and Soul mutated into Disco, with most of the tracks capturing that pre-Moroder organic sound. Lee Alfred's Rockin-Poppin Full Tilting for example has a laid back vibe similar to Curtis Mayfield's more uptempo tunes. New Ghetto Express's version of Standing On The Verge of Getting It On (originally by Funkadelic) up's the tempo on the wigged-out classic, again combing the Funk with a Disco groove.

Lypso Disco by Smile Street People, as you'd guess from the title, has a playful Calypso lilt and bounce to it. Cosmic Disco by Patricia White on the other hand doesn't sound like something that Todd Terje or Lindstrom got their cues from, but it is a fun song with some brilliantly random thumb-piano playing in the background!

Anyone looking for samples will have a field day among these tracks, Sweet Daddy Floyd's I Just Can't Help Myself for example has a break in the middle to die for. You could loop up 4 bars practically anywhere and have something pretty damn funky to work with. For that reason alone, it's well worth having a listen and broadening your horizons.

It transpires that the band also recorded an album which, until now, has never seen the light of day. Madness! Thanks to Athens Of The North's digging/negotiating skills, for the first ever we can imbibe the turbo charged jazz of "Say It", we can shake ourselves sweaty to the rampant funk of "Life Is A Challenge" and we can get super freaky to the bee's nest bass and p-funk wiliness of "Fruit Of The Universe". We can plenty more too... That's only three of 10 unreleased gems on here. Magic.

Review: Dam Funk has been foundational in crystallising Stones Throw's undisputed leadership in the nu-school funk and boogie scene, and he's up there with the great J Dilla in our books. Naturally, he's been asked to mix up the latest series of DJ Kicks and, ladies and gentlemen, it's a real masterclass - one of those comps you can safely leave on and let it do its thing on you. The mood is personified by a fine blend of electronics and tougher, funkier rhythms by artists such as Index, Moon B, and Dam himself. There are also a few rare cuts by Chicago house legend Gemini that fit in perfectly, and a whole heap of wavy, Cali-inspired electronic funk. Badass.

Review: Here's something of a treat for disco diggers: an essential collection of little-known, hard-to-find and downright essential Brazilian disco and boogie. Put together by Brazilian digger Junior Santos, Brazilian Disco Boogie Sounds is full of must-have material, from the familiar bounce and punchy horns of the Teena Marie-ish "Moral Tem Hora" from Cristina Camargo, to the sweet shuffle and carnival-friendly swing of Carlos Dafe's "Escorpiao". With quality material throughout picking highlights is tough, though we're particularly fans of the jazz guitar-laden boogie of Famks' "Labrinto" and Sandra De Sa's thrilling "Negra Flor".

Review: Long-established LA funk troupe Orgone re-deliver their 2015 album Beyond The Sun on gatefold coloured vinyl. As if the sounds were beautiful enough... Seven albums deep, the ever-expanding collective (who've backed the likes of Pharohe Monche, The Pharcyde and Plantlife) hone their sound to even tighter, silkier depths. Now rolling with new singer Adryon De Leon, there's a newfound sense of energy and style across the album. From the sweaty, stompy glam-funk grooves of "Someone's Love Is Real" to the smouldering smokiness of "No Pain", Orgone continue to remain in their own universe. If your collection doesn't boast this, now is the time.

Review: Well, what can we say about this great piece of jazz fusion that hasn't already been said? The short answer is not much, but we can certainly add to the list of compliments and tell you that this is a super-clean Polypro repress, so you don't have to go out your way to listen to it PROPERLY. The man, Roy Ayers, is obviously a legend who still performs to this day, but this album must be some of his best work, and contains the cult single "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", sampled by everyone form here to Katmandu, and still a flawless song to this day. This dude is up there with the lies Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, etc etc. A stone-cold classic.

Review: Few writer/singer/producer talents command legendary status like Leon. With a CV that lists Jackson, Gaye and Jones (among many others) and a rich discography himself, 76-year-old Ware has been behind a vast amount of soul gold over the years. This second album from 1976 is one of the many highlights from his personal repertoire. His only Motown released album, it's a smooth soul adventure with less big band dynamics of his contemporaries and a stripped back backing orchestration. Highlights include the deep shades of Trouble Man on the vocal layers of "Body Heat", the minor key introspection of "Holiday" and proto Balearic wooziness of "Musical Massage".

Review: BBE release this 14-track double LP containing some of Perception and Today Records' best tracks from the 60s and 70s. There are highlights aplenty: The Eight Minutes' "I Can't Get No Higher" opens proceedings with a soulful, mournful and infectious blend of Motown aesthetics, with the rough, raw production value and loose funk capturing exactly what Perception was all about. Elsewhere, The Fatback Band's "Njia (Njia) Walk" is characterised by a driving beat and climbing bass line, creating the illusion of disco trapped inside the mind of funk. Madhouse's "Get Some Of This" features some fantastic drum work, going at once from a sparse break to a rattling, break-neck cacophony of percussion. In a word, essential.

Review: Perception Records specialised in releasing music from Manhattan's black music scene in the 60s and 70s, and BBE have shrewdly chosen to re-release some of the highlights from that era. On Part 2 of the vinyl series, Black Ivory's "Surrender" is a highlight, with crashing percussion and a bass line that immediately captures your attention. Bartel's "Boogie" meanwhile opens with spectacular horn work, running rings around the rhythm, the drums subtly driving the beat along while impressive jazzy guitars flick away. Elsewhere, JJ Barnes' "Wishful Thinking" is a track that skirts the line between funk and Motown with aplomb - the trio of female harmonies stand behind the lead singer, a choir of soul adding gentle textures to a slow love song. Highly recommended.

Review: The Houston Talent Expo '82 is one of those curious releases that has come out of a very special moment in time. Moreover, it's a one-off, a exception that came to be out of chance. The group was an extended collection of African-American in the Houston area throughout the 1980s, and this was their only release as a unit. "Let's Get High" sets the scene in perfect fashion, a funky, slow-motion groove with enough soul to kill the devil himself, but there's even gear for the diggers and samplers to salivate over. The absurdly good "Chocolate Coated People" drops a wonky, gritty slice of percussion over drugged-out melodies and a sea of funkiness. This is a truly special piece of music - don't miss it.

Review: Back in the mid 1970s, young engineer Terry 'T.K' Kane and Harry Stone joined forces to launch a studio and record distribution business in Miami. It would spawn a huge number of in-house labels, and even greater number of funk and disco releases, and even a string of million-selling artists. Given this legacy, it's little surprise to see Athens of the North paying tribute to the funk side of Henry Stone's impressive legacy with this superb collection. While there are a few tried-and-tested cuts to be found - see the T Connection and Little Beaver cuts - for the most part The Miami Sound focuses on more obscure - but no less hard-hitting - gems from the likes of Jonny K, Stevens & Foster and Leno Philips.

Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from Lack of Afro, AKA veteran funk, soul and hip-hop producer Adam Gibbons. This fourth studio album for regular home Freestyle Records is being pitched as his most eclectic yet. Certainly, there's plenty of variety in the textures, styles and tempos, from the disco-funk stomp of Herbal T hook-up "Brown Sugar" and sweet Northern Soul blast of "The Contender" (all fuzzy guitars and pleasing horns), to the soft soul shuffle of "Making It Right" and Breakestra-ish hip-hop funk of "Here We Go Again". Despite the variety, Gibbons is still at his best when really cutting loose, as the superb opener "Freedom" adeptly demonstrates.

Review: French groove connoisseur Charles Maurice digs deep into Brazil's once-thriving boogie and disco movement. All tracks recorded between 1977-84, most of them rarely - if ever - released outside of Brazil, it's a bounty of beautifully produced silky soul curated, arranged and delivered with authenticity. Highlights include the syrupy harmonies and Chic-style guitar and bass foundations of Brenda's "Natureza Viva", Lady Zu's cat-like mic purring on "Valeu A Pena" and the soaking wet synth/slap bass fusion and jazz chords on Rosana's "Alegria No Ar". Sun kissed.
