Review: Idris's fifth and perhaps most popular of his near-20 LP strong solo discography (that's not including the epic array of artists he's worked with from Fats Domino to Art Davis) Ranging from the heavily-sampled stone-cold soul stunner "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This" to silky disco funk such as the album title track and the sleazier "Crab Apple" to the frenetic jazz blasts of tracks such as "Camby Bolongo", this is the sound of a man fully committed to the craft and spirit of the groove. Nothing short of essential.

Review: David Hanke is a man known for his wild and illustrious array of aliases. Through the years, he's appeared under the names Black Soyls, Madball Scientists, Mankoora and Rengades Of Jazz, among many others. Dem Juju Poets is his latest creation and, needless to say, it is perhaps his most accomplished and mature project to date. We don't want to take anything away from his previous productions but there's just something utterly fluid about this latest reincarnation. Matasuna is the new label to launch this new Liberated Thoughts LP, and we're sure this will go down a storm with all the jazz-funk crew, particularly the followers of Giles Peterson's DJ sound. Hanke's approach is playful and diverse, branching out into all sorts of jazzy vibrations that are tied together by funky, off-kilter outernational vibes. Plenty of breaks, bass bumps, and party moves for all sorts of vinyl playaz - oh boy, check those horns on the masterful "People's Republic"!

Review: 1972's eponymous debut album from groundbreaking British band Cymande is one of those records you should really own. If you don't, then pick up a copy of this handy reissue. Not only does it contain a string of classic cuts - think "Bra", "The Message" and the epic, undulating deep jazz-funk workout "Dove" - but also provides a perfect summary of the band's unique fusion of American, Caribbean and African influences. Many albums get called "timeless", but few genuinely are. Cymande certainly is, with the album's lesser-known cuts - the wonderful "Rastafarian Folk Song" or the appropriately blazed "Getting It Back" - being every bit as impressive as those that have been widely celebrated.

Review: Back in 2012, Will "Quantic" Holland joined forces with Colombian musician Mario Galeano to form Ondatropica. The eponymous debut album that followed was quietly impressive, fusing traditional South American styles - cumbia, champeta etc. - with elements of hip-hop and funk, with the assistance of musicians from the vibrant Colombian scene. For this belated follow-up, the duo has tweaked the formula slightly, incorporating more from the Caribbean and African influences that have seeped into the music made around Bogota and Old Providence Island. While the palette of influences made be broader, the resultant music is every bit as enjoyable and entertaining as that found on its predecessor.

Review: Dallas-based vocalist, producer and percussionist Enois Scroggins has found musical success later in life. Despite his vintage - he's an '80s soul and funk survivor with roots in the scene of the '70s - it's only in the last decade that he's begun to release acclaimed material. Real-E sees him join forces with revivalist electrofunk duo The Touch Funk for a cheery romp through synth-laden boogie-funk pastures. As you'd expect, it's musically on-point, with Scroggins' lyrics and vocals perfectly complimenting the Touch Funk's analogue synths and drum machine rhythms. Along the way, they pay tribute to P-funk, electro, boogie and synth disco, with a string of handpicked guests swinging by to lend a hand.

Review: Soundway Records' recent Doin' It In Lagos compilation did a terrific job shining a light on the lesser-known boogie and disco-funk sound of early '80s Nigeria. That set included Livy Ekezemie's "Holiday Actions", one of the standout cuts from the musician/producer's brilliant - but ludicrously hard to find - 1983 album, Friday Night. This reissue is, then, well timed. The set sees Ekezemie effortlessly join the dots between Clavinet-heavy, Afro-tiged disco-funk, boogie, AOR ballads and, in the case of the brilliant "Dedication", his own tribute to Stevie Wonder classic "Superstition". It's a fine set, all told, and one that's shot through with hard-wired early '80s funk.

Review: Soundway surpass themselves again with this wonderful reissue from the Ghanaian artist Rob, who released two albums back in 1977 for the West African Essiebons label. Rob was a seasoned musician in the 70?s, having recorded and toured with many well known bands. The album is a somewhat Spartan, brooding affair where less is most definitely more as slow burning, hip swaying cosmic funk drenched compositions are offset by wonderful punchy brass arrangements. A slow burning pulse is present throughout with highlights being ''Loose up Yourself'' and the irreplaceable carnal conquest anthem '' Make it Fast, Make it Slow''. Songs of celebration sit alongside other pieces of introspection and socially conscious topics; some might criticise the odd duff notes and occasional raw vocal edge, but this just adds texture to the overall performance and vibe. Without question one of the best reissues of 2012.

Review: Piero Umiliani is an Italian jazz musician, most famous also for his dalliances in scoring many film soundtracks. The compositions here, have been credited to Rovi (another alias used by Umiliani). This LP made by ten tracks that could have been the perfect soundtrack of a 'Commedia Sexy All'Italiana' (a genre characterised by sex-based plots and bawdy jokes). At that time in Italy disco had still an exotic appeal and was considered apt to accompany a genre of movies that was at once erotic and comic. Discomusic is some sort of a white version of a sound that is inherently black, a unique record within Umiliani's discography. The track Discomania became popular as the closing theme of 90- Minuto, a famous Italian football TV show, bringing Umiliani's music to millions of Italian households.

Review: We've been steadily teased by Bastard Jazz with a slow flow of singles but the time has come to reveal B Bravo's whole debut album... And he hasn't disappointed. A supreme cosmic boogie experience throughout, Bravo flexes around the funk/house/hip-hop axis with sunshine synths, loose swinging drums, heavyweight talkbox action and oodles of funk and timely displays of sensitivity. Highlights that really showcase the soul spectrum B Bravo explores range from the Chromeo-style party jam "I'm For Real" to the horn-hazed tinkling "LA Nights" to the dreamy west coast house struts and wriggles of "Summer Love". Sure fire summer silver lining.

Review: Famously, Shadow's Sweet Sweet Dreams album was panned by critics when it first appeared way back in 1984. In the years since, it has attained cult status, with collectors of Trinidadian music particularly enjoying its curious blend of bustling boogie electronics, Soca rhythms, traditional instrumentation and sassy disco-pop style. As this tasty reissue proves, the album has lost none of its lustre over the last 30 years. Put simply, it still sounds ahead of its time, with intergalactic dancefloor workouts such as "Let's Make It Up" (with its "we're gonna have a party" refrain) and "Way Way Out" resonating particularly loudly.

Review: Freshly minted imprint Triassic Tusk is the brainchild of two little-known Scottish record collectors. Screamers, Bangers & Cosmic Synths is the label's first stab at putting together a compilation, and draws together tracks that have done the business during the first year of their regular Moon Hop party. Predictably, the track list is chock full of ludicrously obscure, quirky and eccentric cuts from artists that even their own parents have forgotten about. As a result, there's plenty to enjoy, from the hustling boogie of Steve Monite's ludicrously expensive "Only You (Disco Jam)" - previously only available on an album that will now set you back over L1500 - to the spiraling, Latin-tinged funk swing of Francis Guillon's "By My Side" and Juan Pablo Torres' bizarre cosmic disco wig-out "Nocturno Op 1".

Review: Way back in 2002, Soundway Records announced their arrival with a fine collection of Ghanaian funk and Afro-beat delights. Since then, the vinyl edition of Ghana Soundz has become a sought-after item online, prompting Soundway to put together this welcome reissue. It contains a wealth of sought-after fare, from the heavyweight Afro-funk of Marijata's "Mother Africa" and percussive Afro-beat brilliance of Gyedo Blay Ambolley & The Steneboofs' "Simigwado", to the Africa '70 style shuffle and chated vocals of The Ogyatanaa Showband's, via the hot-to-trot high-life thrills of "Self Reliance" by The African Brothers. While other labels have since showcased the effervescent of the Ghanaian scene during the 1970s, few compilations have hit the spot quite like Ghana Soundz.

Ege Bamyasi still stands as one of their crowning achievements, and one whose spooky reverberations have made their presence felt throughout a mighty chunk of the rock and dance music of the decades that have followed. An otherworldly masterclass for the ages.

Review: Following 2012's fourth volume that celebrated the existential work of Tim Maia, here we find Luaka Bop exploring the legacy of William Onyeabor. A high chief and Kenyan diplomat who allegedly refuses to discuss his music, he self-released eight albums in the 70s and 80s and these are some of the many highlights. Stretching from the New York-influenced post-punk synth funk of "Good Name" to the most authentic Afro fusion of "Why Go To War", Onyeabor's range not only reflects his clear creative skill, but also the ever-developing international language of music during the fruitful period he was active. Who is William Onyeabor? Press play and find out yourselves...

Review: Back in 2012, Rush Hour boss Antal Heitlager put together a sublime collection of obscure Surinamese disco and boogie for sister label Kindred Spirits. Four years on, and with assistance from Thomas Gesthuizen, he presents the follow-up, Surinam Funk Force. Predictably, it's another fine set full of surprise gems and barely-known classics. While some tracks sound authentically American (see the deep and harmonious brilliance of Steve Watson's "Born To Boogie", and Surinam scene stalwart Sumy's eccentric, synth-laden "The Funky 'G' (Only Comes At Night)", some of the most potent cuts lean more heavily on traditional Surinamese music. In this camp you'll find the thrilling funk of Explosion's "Wakka Mang", and the off-kilter tropical disco-funk of Ronald Snijders' "Kaseko Attack".

Review: For all of his undoubted musical genius, many of Prince's albums could be a little hit-and-miss. That's not an accusation that could be hurled at Sign O' The Times, which remains one of the Purple One's most potent collections of songs. As this vinyl reissue proves, the 1987 set still sounds every bit as good as it did all those years ago. While there are plenty of well-known hits - the peerless social commentary of 'Sign O' The Times', the sexual thrust of 'Hot Thing', the gnarly dancefloor funk of 'You Got The Look', and so on - the album's lesser-known moments, from the rockin' strut of "Play In The Sunshine", to the heartfelt, stripped-back "The Cross", are equally as inspired. File under "essential listening".

Review: The Magic Forest dwelling record collectors better known as Psychemagik return to Claremont56 offshoot Leng with a new compilation Magik Sunrise which is essentially a vinyl shaped sequel to last year's well received Magik Cyrkles. Though equally well presented as that compilation, Psychemagik refreshingly adopt a different sonic direction here, trading in the obscure Balearica and funk in favour of a wonderfully enlightening blend of African reggae, jazz-funk, prog rock, folk and New Age curios. Think David Holmes classic Essential Mix then crank up the weird factor to eleven and you'll have a good idea of what to expect from this fifteen track selection. The sensual twilight boogie of "The Juggler" by Fox is a particular highlight.

Review: The Africa Seven label might not have been around for very long, but the London-Paris dynasty has certainly established itself as a no.1 outlet for rare, unhinged world music. This is Africa Airways Volume 3: The Afro-Psych Excursion, a gorgeous compilation spanning the years 1972 to 1984, and it clearly offers some of the most magnetic tunes that they label has put out thus far. There isn't a mediocre song in here and, as the saying goes, it's all-killer-no-filler; take African Black's "Nzango", for example, a twisted, FX-heavy tribal experiment, or the more soulful highs and lows of tunes like "Zinabu" by Bunzu Soundz. Rough, dusty, completely psyched-out, and inimitable the whole way through; if you're looking for something that'll get the heads turning, and the diggers jealous, then this is your LP. Highly recommended.

Review: Africa Seven continue their rich vein of releases this year with an indepth exploration of the Tala A.M. discography. Those unfamiliar with the Cameroonian's story will be shaken by the adversity he lived through before going on to enjoy a successful music career; blindness and the death of both parents afflicted him as a child. However Tala Andre Marie's love of music was his guiding light, as was Cameroonian icon Manu Dibango who helped him relocate to Paris and thus began a recording career consisting of no less than 13 albums! African Funk Experimentals 1975 To 1978 sees Africa Seven dip into the Tala AM archives for a ten track presentation of his funkiest cuts during the early years of recording for the Fiesta label. "Hot Koki" is a particular treat, whilst disco selectors will love "Sugar Lump".

Review: Recorded in 1978 but lovingly excavated from the vaults and remastered by Trad Vibe records, this third album by French band Cortex is a wealth of funky delights. Like Steely Dan, the core of Cortex consisted of pianist Alain Mion and drummer Alain Gandolfi, but for recording their number was swelled by a host of session musicians. Combining fusion with pop and rock melodies, they seriously sound like they were in the same zone as Stevie Wonder circa "Songs In The Key of Life" - the use of synth basslines and funky clavinets in particular recall the great one.
Recalling another great lost album, Shggie Otis's Inspiration Information, the atmosphere is tight and warm as songs like "Images" follow some superb jazzy chord changes. "La Bulle" is a sexy and slow rocky number that owes a debt to Isaac Hayes, and sounds like the kind of thing Air listened to around the time of Moon Safari. The uptempo disco of "Running From You" is made slightly camp due to the clipped English language vocals, but it's still a hell of a tune (ideally suited for a cosmic Todd Terje edit). Closing track "Matin Gris" is the most downtempo thing on the album and a fitting send-off, with the glorious analogue phasing on the synths proving a real highlight. This is funky French rock at its best, and very deserving of a reissue and a whole new audience.

Review: The Spacetalk label returns with this fine compilation by French house shotter, Jeremy Underground. We know him, and you surely know him, though his My Love Is Underground label, an imprint that has produced some of the best deep house in the last five years. He's not in house mode today, though, and instead the DJ shows us his soul roots. Ron Rinaldi's opener "Mexican Summer" is a real peach of a song, then there's some Brazilian disco-funk through Leila Pinheiro's "Tudo Em Cima", and the supremely deep and sensual "Superstar" by NCCU. Other favourites include Maureen Bailey's bittersweet anthem "Takin' My Time With You", and June Evans' "Hardly Need To Say", a tune that we could just leave on repeat. A highly recommended comp!

Review: Marketed as a "funky laboratory trying to deliver the positive vibes", Germany's Born To Shine imprint is now a reliable and incredibly accessible source for the best in contemporary funk, soul and that buzzword we sometimes refer to as 'jazz-dance'. This new compilation, Funk'n'Shine, is the imprint's testament to the enlarged genre of funk, and all of its associated sub genres and parallel influences. Six cuts means six fine, house-relied excursions that meander into jazz, breakbeat and beyond; our picks have to be L33's cosmic boogie stepper "I Care 4 You", Paul Whitey's insanely funky house melter ""Zodiac", Kali Boog's downtempo electro swings on "Dreams Of You", and Nightmoves' excellent house trip "Not Tonight". What a tidy lil' TIP this is!
