Review: Freshly minted imprint Triassic Tusk is the brainchild of two little-known Scottish record collectors. Screamers, Bangers & Cosmic Synths is the label's first stab at putting together a compilation, and draws together tracks that have done the business during the first year of their regular Moon Hop party. Predictably, the track list is chock full of ludicrously obscure, quirky and eccentric cuts from artists that even their own parents have forgotten about. As a result, there's plenty to enjoy, from the hustling boogie of Steve Monite's ludicrously expensive "Only You (Disco Jam)" - previously only available on an album that will now set you back over L1500 - to the spiraling, Latin-tinged funk swing of Francis Guillon's "By My Side" and Juan Pablo Torres' bizarre cosmic disco wig-out "Nocturno Op 1".

Review: Famously, Shadow's Sweet Sweet Dreams album was panned by critics when it first appeared way back in 1984. In the years since, it has attained cult status, with collectors of Trinidadian music particularly enjoying its curious blend of bustling boogie electronics, Soca rhythms, traditional instrumentation and sassy disco-pop style. As this tasty reissue proves, the album has lost none of its lustre over the last 30 years. Put simply, it still sounds ahead of its time, with intergalactic dancefloor workouts such as "Let's Make It Up" (with its "we're gonna have a party" refrain) and "Way Way Out" resonating particularly loudly.

Review: Soundway surpass themselves again with this wonderful reissue from the Ghanaian artist Rob, who released two albums back in 1977 for the West African Essiebons label. Rob was a seasoned musician in the 70?s, having recorded and toured with many well known bands. The album is a somewhat Spartan, brooding affair where less is most definitely more as slow burning, hip swaying cosmic funk drenched compositions are offset by wonderful punchy brass arrangements. A slow burning pulse is present throughout with highlights being ''Loose up Yourself'' and the irreplaceable carnal conquest anthem '' Make it Fast, Make it Slow''. Songs of celebration sit alongside other pieces of introspection and socially conscious topics; some might criticise the odd duff notes and occasional raw vocal edge, but this just adds texture to the overall performance and vibe. Without question one of the best reissues of 2012 so far.

Review: Since first pricking the collective consciousness at the dawn of the decade, 12-piece ensemble Jungle Fire has released some killer fusions of funk, Afrobeat, and more tropical dancefloor flavours. Jambu is their second full-length, following the release of acclaimed debut album Tropicoso in 2014. As vibrant, colourful and hedonistic as you'd expect, it sees the Los Angeles' band lay down a series of scorching original compositions built around heavy funk grooves, bold Afrobeat horns, and the kind of intricate, layered percussion more often found in vintage Cuban dance music. As usual, you'll find nods to numerous South American styles amongst the Afro-funk throw-downs, ensuring a set that doesn't settle on one sound for any significant length of time.

Review: The Spacetalk label returns with this fine compilation by French house shotter, Jeremy Underground. We know him, and you surely know him, though his My Love Is Underground label, an imprint that has produced some of the best deep house in the last five years. He's not in house mode today, though, and instead the DJ shows us his soul roots. Ron Rinaldi's opener "Mexican Summer" is a real peach of a song, then there's some Brazilian disco-funk through Leila Pinheiro's "Tudo Em Cima", and the supremely deep and sensual "Superstar" by NCCU. Other favourites include Maureen Bailey's bittersweet anthem "Takin' My Time With You", and June Evans' "Hardly Need To Say", a tune that we could just leave on repeat. A highly recommended comp!

Review: The Africa Seven label might not have been around for very long, but the London-Paris dynasty has certainly established itself as a no.1 outlet for rare, unhinged world music. This is Africa Airways Volume 3: The Afro-Psych Excursion, a gorgeous compilation spanning the years 1972 to 1984, and it clearly offers some of the most magnetic tunes that they label has put out thus far. There isn't a mediocre song in here and, as the saying goes, it's all-killer-no-filler; take African Black's "Nzango", for example, a twisted, FX-heavy tribal experiment, or the more soulful highs and lows of tunes like "Zinabu" by Bunzu Soundz. Rough, dusty, completely psyched-out, and inimitable the whole way through; if you're looking for something that'll get the heads turning, and the diggers jealous, then this is your LP. Highly recommended.

Suppliers to the likes of Kenny Dope, Phil Asher and Dimitri, Gino and Federico have carved their crate craft to insane levels over the last 30+ years... As shown on this detailed, widescreen boogie, funk and disco collection for BBC. Splattering the vibrant collection with a handful of their own edits (TB Funk's salubrious struts on "Free Blow", fly-by boogie falsettos on Living Color's "Plastic People"), the Grasso bro's have put together a package that's eye-opening, enlightening and damn fine to party to. See you on the other side.

Review: Way back in 2002, Soundway Records announced their arrival with a fine collection of Ghanaian funk and Afro-beat delights. Since then, the vinyl edition of Ghana Soundz has become a sought-after item online, prompting Soundway to put together this welcome reissue. It contains a wealth of sought-after fare, from the heavyweight Afro-funk of Marijata's "Mother Africa" and percussive Afro-beat brilliance of Gyedo Blay Ambolley & The Steneboofs' "Simigwado", to the Africa '70 style shuffle and chated vocals of The Ogyatanaa Showband's, via the hot-to-trot high-life thrills of "Self Reliance" by The African Brothers. While other labels have since showcased the effervescent of the Ghanaian scene during the 1970s, few compilations have hit the spot quite like Ghana Soundz.

Review: Serious reissue business: Be With take us back to 1971 for Air's one and only album. The brainchild of Googe Coppola (who you may recognise from Fire Island or cameos with Jeremy Steig) and her partner in jazz Tom Coppola, you can hear vapour trails of the pastoral, laidback folk of the late '60s with a more forthright funk energy and jazz mindset as the lovers and their bandmates dazzle us with meandering melodies and stories; from The Doors level organ frenzy of "Baby I Don't Know Where I Love" to the galloping momentum of "In Our Time" that suddenly stops dead into an almost medieval breakdown by way of ballads such as "Sister Bessie" and Afrobeat-style horn chaos like "Lipstick", this really captures an exciting time in music and, if the music is as honest as it seems, a rather exciting time in the lives of the Coppolas too...

Review: A New York based fusion band that recorded during the '70s, Tarika Blue came to the attention of a more contemporary audience when singer Erykah Badu sampled them on "Didn't Cha Know." In 1974 Tarika Blue were signed to New York jazz label, Chiaroscuro Records, founded by producer Hank O'Neal. Their first album, The Blue Path, was all instrumental of soaring jazz funk, a finely crafted weapon in the armory of any self-respecting DJ or collector of jazz and funk.'The Blue Path' is regarded as one of the best jazz funk albums and it's not hard to hear why. The bravura and muscular dexterity found in the best jazz artists, balanced with the groove and funk of the finest gritty bands from across the tracks, this album is a stone cold killer from the opening note to the closing fade out.

Review: Since the early 2000s, the NY duo Kon & Amir have been among the best disco editors around, and should now surely be seen as being amongst the very best of the East Coast disco scene. This is their 2007 compilation, Off The Track Volume One: The Bronx, a near twenty magnificent disco blazers that have been stripped down and anted-up by the duo for the purpose of today's dance floor. What's impressive, though, is how Kon & Amir manage to allow the original tunes to speak for themselves and, if anything, their editing allows the originals to sound even louder and prouder than ever before. There's plenty of heavy gear in here from the likes of Masterforce, STUD Band, The London Experimental Jazz Quartet, and if this doesn't satisfy your boogie needs, then we don't know what will.

Review: Limited repress on coloured vinyl... If you haven't got Ubiquity's 2006 Darondo collection yet, now is most crucially the time. Shucks, if you have got it, you might want this for the collection anyway. Criminally overlooked by funk tourists, the Bay Area legend was originally the soul preserve for serious collectors until Gilles Peterson, Jack Penate and even Breaking Bad brought him to our attention a few years before his death. With a stark vocal range that reaches falsettos Jack Splash could only dream of and a lyrical dexterity that sits solemnly between raw emotion and touching poetry, each track shows how helped shape the blueprint that the likes of Child Of Luv, Plantlife, Amp Fiddler and many others developed years later. Essential.

Review: Africa Seven continue their rich vein of releases this year with an indepth exploration of the Tala A.M. discography. Those unfamiliar with the Cameroonian's story will be shaken by the adversity he lived through before going on to enjoy a successful music career; blindness and the death of both parents afflicted him as a child. However Tala Andre Marie's love of music was his guiding light, as was Cameroonian icon Manu Dibango who helped him relocate to Paris and thus began a recording career consisting of no less than 13 albums! African Funk Experimentals 1975 To 1978 sees Africa Seven dip into the Tala AM archives for a ten track presentation of his funkiest cuts during the early years of recording for the Fiesta label. "Hot Koki" is a particular treat, whilst disco selectors will love "Sugar Lump".

Review: Pure Ghanaian gold, Disco Documentary: Full Of Funk was a rare private press released in 1979 never to be released again... Until now. Dusting off the long lost tapes with due care and attention, BBE have kindly reminded us that disco had much wider impact than the US and Europe. Nana Love's slightly nasal tones are instantly alluring, but it's the clam-tight musicianship that really bites. Big Bernard Edwards bass, shiny guitar twangs, extensive organ noodling and vibrant Afrofunk horns galore, this is a truly stunning document.

This fourth volume in as many years is, predictably, stacked high with high quality fare. While there are plenty of straight-up funk and soul cuts - check The Traffic's killer cover of "White Lines", Brian Auger & The Trinity's 'Black Cat', and John Heartsman & Circles' tasty "Talking About My Baby", for starters - Charles's on-point selection also include nods to jazz-dance, Afro-funk, Latin beats, retro-futurist boogie-soul, and simmering torch songs (a sublime contribution from '80s star Lisa Stansfield).

Review: Soul Jazz Records has investigated the World of New Orleans funk - arguably the original variant of the style - on numerous other occasions - but it's a sound that's always worth revisiting. This edition covers 26 years between 1951 and '77, combining early rhythm and blues workouts from the likes of Gus 'The Groove' Lewis and Dave Bartholomew, with later material from such New Orleans luminaries as Chocolate Milk, Johnny Adams, Eddie Bo and Zilla Mayes (whose torch song "All I Want Is You" provides a fitting conclusion). As usual, Soul Jazz has included a brilliantly comprehensive 44-page booklet, inside which you'll find heaps of historical information, and original photographs sourced from the Ralston Crawford New Orleans Archive.

Review: Odion Iruoje aka Sound President was one of Nigeria's top producers in the 1970s and early '80s, but his solo recording career was restricted to just the one release, Down To Earth. Originally released on Iruoje's own label, Odion Ltd, in 1983, it was only ever distributed in small quantities and Soundway Records have given this much needed re-issue. Iruoje is known for having signed the legendary Fela Kuti to major label EMI and acting as his producer throughout the early '70s. Starting out with the proto funk rap cut "Identify With Your Root (Which One You De?)", there's some killer West African boogie-funk-soulfulness on "Ikebe" and some feel good disco vibes; Lagos style on "Love Care".

Review: Following 2010's inaugural compilation, Analog Africa dig deeper to expand our Ghanaian funk collections: featuring an exciting range of well-known names (K Frimpong, Ebo Taylor, The African Brothers) and more obscure rarities, it's an insightful schooling in the highlife sound and its deeply rooted funk and soul tendrils. Every track is a highlight, but stand-out jams come from De Frank's Band (thanks to their attention to western rhythm detail), Los Issifu & His Moslems' sedate organ meanders on "Kana Soro" and Complex Soundz' sermon-like horn blaster "God Is Love". Complete with a well compiled and research booklet that tells the full Ghanaian funk story, this is a fine addition to any collection.

Review: Locking down their chops on the live circuit for years, Minneapolis ten-piece Black Market Brass finally deliver one almighty debut album that's raw, loose and real. All recorded live, there's a rich, warm sound and dynamic as the players ease together from all corners around the campfire of percussion. Bluesy, Afrobeat, jazzy and funky, we hurled around from total horn euphoria of "The Powers" and highlife euphoria the disarming, alarming chaos of "The Grog" by way of the steel drum rough and tumble of "Half A Cig" and a whole load more. Pay attention... This is the sound of band of playing each other inside out. Tight.

Review: Recently, Svert has released a swathe of Olli Ahvenlahti reissues, giving a new generation of listeners a chance to get acquainted with the Finnish jazz great's best work. The Poet was originally recorded and released in 1976, and saw pianist Ahvelahti collaborate with a wide range of musicians on a set that looked to the U.S jazz-fusion and jazz-funk scenes for inspiration. It's perhaps most famous for the break-digger's favoruite "Grandma's Rocking Chair" - famously turned into a 16-minute percussion epic by Kenny Dope back in 2001 - but there's plenty of other highlights to enjoy. The smooth "Aura", which sounds a little like Bob James jamming with Azymouth, is particularly potent.

Review: Magic happens when Mr Thing hits the crates. His ability to unearth recordings you're guaranteed to never have heard before, and join the dots in ways you'd never have thought before, his "Strange Breaks" series is legendary. Long since off-press, to celebrate their 20th anniversary BBE have repressed this seminal 2009 sophomore. From the turbo blues fusion of Roy Head and the speeding Mancini feels of Val Marrall's Orchestra to the more sedate, slinky funk of Johnny Griffith and sunny-side roots of Tinga Stewart, Mr Thing's odyssey remains as inciteful, intriguing and as full of treasure as it did seven years ago.
