Review: Stone cold classic from 1977. Zebra's self-released (and only) single has had an interesting trip in the last 15 years. First chanced upon by Ian Wright, then a hot target on the collector's merry-go-round, then a big hit for Jazzman and now, 10 years later, a potential smasher for Jazzman alumni Fryer and his consistently ace AOTN imprint. In case you don't know it, "Simple Song" is a slapping, frenzied funk groove while "I Forgot To Say" plays consummate counterpoint with a blissful honeyed ballad. It's worth jumping on this while you can...

Review: DJ Fryer's Athens of the North label continues its relentless charge the annals of funk and disco, focussing attentions here on the mid '70s debut of Jeanie Tracy. Glance at the discography of the Houston-born singer and you are presented with a storied recording career that includes credits alongside Bobby Womack, Aretha Franklin and Sylvester so it's little surprise to see that original copies of Making New Friends / Trippin On The Sounds rarely change hands below the $1000 mark. Originally released on Marvin Holmes' Oakland-based Brown Door Records around 1975, this Athens of the North edition is a must for any self-respecting 45 wielding selectors out there! The A-side is a recognised classic of the rare groove canon but it's "Trippin On The Sounds" that you need to hear; a glorious horn-laden deep funk nugget.

Review: Fly Girl/Fly Boy anthem alert as German funk outfit The Mighty Mocambos team up with legendary US producer Afrika Bambaataa. Assisted by vocalists Charlie Funk and King Kamonzi for French label Favourite Recordings, it's a modern day b-boy wet dream as a dedication to universal hip-hop and funk culture whilst emulating the vibe of a NY block party with that breakbeat punch. And there's an exclusive instrumental on the flipside: nothing less than essential.

Review: Will "Quantic" Holland has enjoyed a long love affair with the music of Colombia, establishing various live acts that pay tribute to the steamy, sweat-soaked sounds of the South American nation. His latest project sees him join forces with singer/songwriter India Gongora to deliver a set inspired by the "Pacific music" variant of Colombian dance culture. The result is a set of songs that sound distinctively Colombian, with tropical guitars, indigenous instrumentation and Gongora's wonderfully laidback vocals being joined by rhythms, bassline and electronics that bring a traditional style bang up to date. The double vinyl set also includes a few forays into more Caribbean territory, including the brilliant "Dub Del Pacifico (Version)".

Review: Two powerful soul sessions from Alice Clark's eponymous debut 1972 album. "Don't You Care" is a hard-hitting soul standard (that became very popular in acid jazz scene in the early 90s) where Alice opens her heart for all to see while her incredible band ebb and flow with Clark's emotions. "Never Did I Stop Loving You", meanwhile, languishes in sentiment at a slightly lower tempo that allows her to really dig deep for those low notes. The real fun happens as we reach momentum towards the end and every band member brings out their A-game and bounces off each other - backing up Alice every step of the way. You will care about this.

Review: Classic jazz funk album from the legendary Johnny 'Hammond' Smith with a special version with six previously unissued bonus out-takes. Released in 1975 and his 32nd long player, it heralded a fresh chapter in his career that saw him exploring more electronic instrumentation and deeper shades of funk in a similar way to Roy Ayers or Bob James. The result was a timeless document that carries motifs of many of today's artists; the harmonies of "Can't We Smile?", for instance, smack of Plantlife while the punctuated piano work and mirrored squiggling synths on "Song For The Family" echoes with Flying Lotus-style whim. Also a key source of breaks for many junglists, Gears is a historic document that's not only played a strong role in electronic music but still sounds incredible today.

Review: "Give Me Your Love" was produced by Roy Ayers and James "Jaymz" Bedford in 1981, this digger's delight was the one and only single by American singer Sylvia Striplin. It is an irresistible serving of soulful disco that really captures the spirit of the times. The track has been sampled on numerous occasions, but most famously on the classic track by Junior M.A.F.I.A. (Notorious B.I.G. production) on their song "Get Money" in 1995 and also by Armand Van Helden on "Full Moon" in 2000. On the flip is the sexy and lo-slung "You Can't Turn Me Away" featuring some sexy funk guitar licks and bass beneath Striplin's powerfully seductive vocals.

Review: Soundway surpass themselves again with this wonderful reissue from the Ghanaian artist Rob, who released two albums back in 1977 for the West African Essiebons label. Rob was a seasoned musician in the 70?s, having recorded and toured with many well known bands. The album is a somewhat Spartan, brooding affair where less is most definitely more as slow burning, hip swaying cosmic funk drenched compositions are offset by wonderful punchy brass arrangements. A slow burning pulse is present throughout with highlights being ''Loose up Yourself'' and the irreplaceable carnal conquest anthem '' Make it Fast, Make it Slow''. Songs of celebration sit alongside other pieces of introspection and socially conscious topics; some might criticise the odd duff notes and occasional raw vocal edge, but this just adds texture to the overall performance and vibe. Without question one of the best reissues of 2012.

Ege Bamyasi still stands as one of their crowning achievements, and one whose spooky reverberations have made their presence felt throughout a mighty chunk of the rock and dance music of the decades that have followed. An otherworldly masterclass for the ages.

A broad banquet across two courses; "I've Changed" is straight up classic soul with big velvet vocals and massive horns. "Inspector Norse", meanwhile, shows Gene's fizzier, funk side. One of the most creative covers of Todd Terje you'll ever hear, this has already been hammered by the likes of Bonobo and Craig Charles. Sweaty.

Review: A limited yellow vinyl funk odyssey from Record Store Day, "I Get Lifted" is taken from KC & The Sunshine Band's second album (1975) Still sounding shiny and floor-minded, the original stands the test of time incredibly well. Todd Terje's edit, however, takes it to another level; upping the tempo (and, possibly, the key), he's extended the right places, added a little more emphasis on the kicks and made sure we can't miss the breakdowns and instrumental sections.

And, with it, this widescreen vibe excursion that's been a go-to for Afrobeat diggers since it was released on Love Day 40 years ago. "Banko Woman" is a firing, energetic funk jam layered with vibrant levels of instrumentation that gradually strip back at points to let you feel the raw tempo of the groove. "Faith Luck & Music" is at once both more bluesy, thanks to the sliding, melting guitars, and spiritual, thanks to the traditional rhythm and chords. A rare and long-awaited reissue.

Review: The latest dig from Best Record Italy's eternal mission to release the finest Roman musical manna features noted jazz man Pino Presti taking on Manu Dibango's eternal party jam "Soul Makossa". Presti's interpretation uses oodles of gleaming 80s synths in place of the original traditional instrumentation, but fear not as the iconic brass section remains a real-world force, and sounds mighty fresh with it. Following up that cover is a sumptuous version of "Ain't No Sunshine" which is aimed square at the heartstrings of the most Balearic cruisers. "I Call Your Name / Come Back To Me" gets even smoother, the vocals capturing Mediterranean getaway romance to perfection.

The short answer is not much, but we can certainly add to the list of compliments and tell you that this is a super-clean Polypro repress, so you don't have to go out your way to listen to it PROPERLY. The man, Roy Ayers, is obviously a legend who still performs to this day, but this album must be some of his best work, and contains the cult single "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", sampled by everyone form here to Katmandu, and still a flawless song to this day. This dude is up there with the lies Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, etc etc. A stone-cold classic.

Review: To quote the label themselves, Afro7 Records focus on "new and old music from East Africa", and we can safely say that they have been flooding our charts with absolute gold over the last two years. That recent batch of 12"s have been playing on rotation here at Juno HQ, and this debut album from The Scorpios will surely be growing to hummable levels in the coming weeks. The collective is made up of Sudanese and European talents based in West London, and the most prominent members include Osman Mohammed on percussion, Osman Bobo and Regia Ishag on vocals, Ronnie Maxwell at the bass, and Michael Ofiri on drums; together they've conjured a traditional yet intriguing selection of folk sounds the push the boundaries. This record is a veritable melting pot of sounds, from soul to funk and rock, much like the influences that were spreading across Sudan from the 1960s onwards. This is a gorgeous selection of chanting, kicking-back and deep meditation; excellent and refreshing, much like the rest of the content on this fine new imprint.

Rawness in every direction; "Funk I Tus" hits and tickles like a Booker T demo (complete with some ace percussion rolls) while "Let The Music Take Your Mind" steps back on the easy beat with more emphasis on freeform synth blasts. Undiluted funk in its purist form; get in the zone today.

Starship members B.Bravo & Teeko have been leading the scene for years and the Intergalactic Funkateers arrive on Austin Boogie Crew brandishing a deadly modern funk cover of Zapp classic "Heartbreaker." Recorded and released digitally last year to pay homage to talkbox don Roger Troutman on the 16th anniversary of his passing, the cut now makes the overdue transfer to 45 and sounds all the better for it. Driven by talkbox harmonies, cracking drums, thumping bass, and slick halftime break downs, Starship puts their signature twist on a classic. Complementing this, the Starship Connection lay a sweet and soulful exclusive on the flip in the shape of "Do It For U."

Review: Indonesian concern Midnight Runners know a thing about quirky, utterly funky boogie and disco variations played out with real world heart and soul. This third album Rare Essence is the most complete look into the world of bandleader Munir Septiandry to date, not least when reveling in the heavyweight groove of "Pyramids Of The Moon". There's a lighter disco touch to "Paraswara Harmoni", but equally a cosmic force guides the track skywards in a manner that calls to mind the sweetest 70s library music. "Cyber Crimes" is a sassier affair that makes its club intentions clearer, but at every turn Midnight Runners display a keen proficiency for party music that you can equally chill to.

Review: From the kitchen to the laboratory, longstanding Aussie groove troupe Cookin' On 3 Burners don the hazmats for their fourth album Lab Experiments and these are just two of the flaming funk potions from their findings. "Real Life Baby" is a slinky pop-tinged new soul affair with swooning spaces for Emmi to flex her distinctive vocals and show us exactly what her kinda swag is. Meanwhile on the B, "Enter Sandman" is exactly what you think it is... A full-throttle trip to never never land with every dramatic organ slapping you could ever dream of. Enter night!

Review: As someone who briefly escaped 70's Glasgow and got a taste of the golden age of NYC Disco, Al Kent is a perfect choice to lead you through a classy selection of some choice and rare Disco treats. Having used his huge collection in the past for re-edits and originals, he also took the bold step of forming his own band in 2007 under the name The Million Dollar Orchestra.

The selections here reflect the point at which Funk and Soul mutated into Disco, with most of the tracks capturing that pre-Moroder organic sound. Lee Alfred's Rockin-Poppin Full Tilting for example has a laid back vibe similar to Curtis Mayfield's more uptempo tunes. New Ghetto Express's version of Standing On The Verge of Getting It On (originally by Funkadelic) up's the tempo on the wigged-out classic, again combing the Funk with a Disco groove.

Lypso Disco by Smile Street People, as you'd guess from the title, has a playful Calypso lilt and bounce to it. Cosmic Disco by Patricia White on the other hand doesn't sound like something that Todd Terje or Lindstrom got their cues from, but it is a fun song with some brilliantly random thumb-piano playing in the background!

Anyone looking for samples will have a field day among these tracks, Sweet Daddy Floyd's I Just Can't Help Myself for example has a break in the middle to die for. You could loop up 4 bars practically anywhere and have something pretty damn funky to work with. For that reason alone, it's well worth having a listen and broadening your horizons.

Review: The Houston Talent Expo '82 is one of those curious releases that has come out of a very special moment in time. Moreover, it's a one-off, a exception that came to be out of chance. The group was an extended collection of African-American in the Houston area throughout the 1980s, and this was their only release as a unit. "Let's Get High" sets the scene in perfect fashion, a funky, slow-motion groove with enough soul to kill the devil himself, but there's even gear for the diggers and samplers to salivate over. The absurdly good "Chocolate Coated People" drops a wonky, gritty slice of percussion over drugged-out melodies and a sea of funkiness. This is a truly special piece of music - don't miss it.

Review: Pure Ghanaian gold, Disco Documentary: Full Of Funk was a rare private press released in 1979 never to be released again... Until now. Dusting off the long lost tapes with due care and attention, BBE have kindly reminded us that disco had much wider impact than the US and Europe. Nana Love's slightly nasal tones are instantly alluring, but it's the clam-tight musicianship that really bites. Big Bernard Edwards bass, shiny guitar twangs, extensive organ noodling and vibrant Afrofunk horns galore, this is a truly stunning document.
