  6. George Duke - "Brazilian Love Affair" (7:20)
  7. The Isley Brothers - "So You Wanna Stay Down" (DJ Reverend P edit) (4:45)
Review: Sony BMG is, as one would expect, a pretty reliable source of all things music-related. This becomes especially true if we're talking edits, seeing as there is just so much of the stuff coming out at all times. The empirical label have recruited the fast-growing DJ Reverend P, one of those producers who manages to find little nuggets of greatness in every track he touches. There's plenty of party-ready hits being given a makeover here; The Jacksons' "That's What You Get (For Being Polite)" is tuned up for the dance floor, "Rockin' After Midnight" by Marvin Gaye is made even sexier, but the special moment lies in "Love Is Always On Your Mind" by Gladys Knight & The Pips. Big up, Reverend P. Hot soul edits comin' at ya!

Review: Craig Charles' CD round-up of cuts that have done that business at his popular Funk & Soul Club events is becoming something of an annual tradition. This fourth volume in as many years is, predictably, stacked high with high quality fare. While there are plenty of straight-up funk and soul cuts - check The Traffic's killer cover of "White Lines", Brian Auger & The Trinity's 'Black Cat', and John Heartsman & Circles' tasty "Talking About My Baby", for starters - Charles's on-point selection also include nods to jazz-dance, Afro-funk, Latin beats, retro-futurist boogie-soul, and simmering torch songs (a sublime contribution from '80s star Lisa Stansfield).

Review: Ray Lugo & The Boogaloo Destroyers' first full length, 2011's Mi Watusi, was a pitch-perfect tribute to Latin boogaloo, a distinctive fusion of dancefloor styles - think soul, funk, rhythm and blues, samba and mambo - which developed around New York's Harlem neighbourhood in the 1960s. This sophomore set delivers much of the same, with producer Lugo and his bandmates paying tribute to the genre in the most authentic of ways. Full of rasping horns, Puerto Rican vocals, Latin-influenced percussion and heavyweight funk rhythms, Que Chevere offers a thrilling and effervescent blast from the past packed with deliciously heavy and life-affirming highlights (check the jaunty "Batongo" and ludicrously percussive "Teremoto").

  1. Little Eva - "Dynamite" (2:21)
  2. Little Eva Harris - "Get Ready/Uptight" (2:32)
Review: Two awesome covers from Little Eva who, fittingly, is most famed for giving us the famously covered "Loco-Motion". "Dynamite" is homage to Mr Dynamite himself, the Godfather of Funk James Brown. Taking the "I Feel Good" hook and making it her own, it's an instant winner. "Get Ready/Uptight", meanwhile, is a medley of The Temptations and Stevie Wonder. It's very bit as tight you'd want it to be. Once stupendously rare, now your while this press run lasts. 100 per cent essential.

Review: Released in 1971 and written and recorded by Dave Hamilton (one of Motown's most prolific and influential session players), Sugar Billy Garner plays the consummate band leader over a relentless groove that rolls with drama. Billy gets sweatier, the guitars get busier, the dynamic gets heavier and heavier... So heavy it rolls into a second part. Primed for the floor, it still hits hard 44 years after its release.

Review: Wow, classics don't come much more special than this. A like-for-like repress of the 1970 RCA release, both sides here are soaked in Scott Heron's raw troubled soul. The endlessly sampled, hugely powerful and perfectly funky "Revolution" remains almost as poignant and prophetic as it was the day it was penned. "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" is much more personal and reveals his talent as a singer as much as the lead track boasts his poetry and ability to deliver a strong message.

Review: Joni Haastrup's classic, cosmic disco LP is among the best of the best in terms of Afrobeat. What is particularly special about it is its 1978 release date - this was miles ahead of everyone else at that stage of African disco music - and the fact that it was the only piece of music to be released under the artist's real name. There is not much we can say about this absolute gem of an album, apart from the fact that it should not be missing from your own shelves, or DJ bag, for that matter. On the latter point, these six tunes are perfect for just about any situation requiring a dance. This is top Afrobeat beat music in all its glory. NOT to be missed. Warmly recommended...

Review: Killer reissue alert! Hendrix's good name has been sullied by all sorts of unnecessary bootlegs and crude edits over the years... But Tex's repurposes are the exception that proves the rule. Two twists on the matchlessly funky "Foxy Lady", both are awesome. And have been since he first delivered them in 2008. The original is straight up funk with big organs and a powerful groove while the dub is exactly that. Mildly skanked and hotter than heater, it will melt any floor you care to address with it.

Review: Adam Mori aka B.Bravo is back like a thick gush of smoke filling up the dance floor, and the Brownswood-Bleep associate is in no mood to wait till the warm up set is done. These two new smokers for the Bastard Jazz imprint are pure class, every bit as sexy and seductive as we've come to expect from the producer, starting with the sultry claps and bass of the excellent "Im For Real", a sun-scorched killer of a tune, fit for riding shotgun and turing the rooftop down. On the flipside, Mr Carmack detunes "Stay The Night" down to a funky, mid-tempo level, and it's just about the grooviest of boogie tracks that we've heard in a while. Think Daft Punk meets Willie Hutch. Wonderful.

Review: Warehouse Find! Released in 68, resurfaced in 05 and back with a very polite, well-polished edit, Spanky Wilson's cover of "Sunshine Of Your Love" is one of the best funk cover versions ever pressed to wax. It is quite criminal it never enjoyed the exposure it deserved back in the day. As for Peggy Lee covering Otis Reading; do we need to spell out how good it is? The drums on the edit are especially well executed. Vinyl was invented for releases like this!

  4. Chimbita Theme (3:29)
Review: These days, it's hard to find contemporary artists making real, unadulterated psych-funk. Combo Chimbita are one such outfit; they're masters of their genre, and they have a real skill for amalgamating the best of South American and African rock. El Corredor De Jaguar comes out courtesy of Names You Can Trust, and its four sublime tunes are a true breath of fresh air among so much sub-standard, 70s rip-offs. "Pajaro" sets the scene with a cool, moody bass and intricate percussion knots, and "Tamborero" picks up the tempo and injects a glorious wave of Latino suaveness into the track's vocals. Our favourite piece has to be "Frio Severo", though, with its stepping drums and hummable guitar hook, but "Chimbita Theme" does a wonderful job of closing this stupendous 7" off with a wild and psychedelic infusion of guitars and tribal drumming. Highly recommended!

One of the most prolific band leaders of his time, the drum-heavy "Jive Samba" was originally released on Tico in 1968 on his Latin Percussion With Soul album. For more percussive precocity flip for Al Escobar's take on Archie Bell & The Drells' classic northern soul anthem "Tighten Up". First released as The Modern Sound Of Al Escobar, original pressings have long since vanished or found a place in collections, making this an even more attractive release.

Following "Bumps In The Road" earlier this year, both "My Own Way" and "His Voice" are captured with full feeling and atmosphere from the room with warm lo-fi brilliance. The former goes for more of a straight-soul feel while the latter is gutsy piece of gospel funk that will could convert the baddest sinner in seconds. Lord have mercy.

Review: Serial alias addict, Kris Holmes returns with a double side of split personality: The Disciples is a rough, bluesy layered piece of slo-mo surf rock where the drums only just keep up and the organs provide heavy soul salvation. "He Spoke" shows Kris on much more of an African inspired trip. Similarly hefty organs power the main groove but there's more uplift in the riff and instrumentation. Insatiable.

With the new single "You Could've Been A Lady", there is also some sweet synthpop inspired groove on "50 Days Of Winter" and some feel good R&B on the infectious "Fight On" amongst many other lovably groovy sounds on offer here. Turrell's wonderfully executed arrangements accompany Watson's smooth as silk voice and it's a great listen from start to finish.

Review: By now, most know the story of 94 East. The Minneapolis band was founded in 1975 by Pepe Wille, and included amongst its' members a precocious teenager called Prince Rogers Nelson. They made over an album's worth of recordings in 1977, which remained something of a secret until Willie released them in the mid '80s to capitalize on Prince's solo success. Here, these pioneering recordings are once again made public in tribute to the sadly departed Purple One. What's so remarkable about them isn't their high quality - you'd expect that given Prince's involvement - but rather how they sound like prototypes of the distinctive "purple funk" sound that the legendary artist later made his own. The album also includes "If You Feel Like Dancin", which is arguably one of the finest "proto-house" records ever made.

Review: Following their surprise reunion and Strut-release album We Be All Africans last year, Idris and The Pyramids return... This time on Max Weissenfeldt's Philophon imprint. Laying down a spiritual arrangement so frenetic and full of its own life it takes up two parts, Idris's sax plays duet with Philophon's own vocalist Guy One. Gutsy, raw and full of surprises, it's another out-of-body experience from the longstanding jazz troupe.

Review: Timed to coincide with the upcoming 2016 Olympics in Rio, the $tateside label comes through with a 7"-shaped celebration of Brazilian music featuring two classic cuts from the archives of Airto Moreira and Gilberto Gil. Even if you don't know it by name, Moreira's "Celebration Suite" should be instantly familiar, a jazz-fusion/samba batucada anthem that truly lives up its joyous name!! Flip it over and Gilberto Gil is on hand for a more mellow accompaniment in the shape of bossa samba standard "Maracatu Atomico," lifted from his 1975 album Viramundo. Comes as a yellow and green samba seven special!

Review: For their latest tribute to Nigeria's booming music scene of the '70s and early '80s, Comb & Razor Sound has decided to do things differently. Whereas most compilations of vintage Nigerian grooves focus on music made in and around the bustling city of Lagos, Calabar-Itu Road looks instead at tracks made and released by those in South Eastern Nigeria. In true crate-digging fashion, the two records here - featuring tracks from previously unheralded stars of the "Calabar" scene, including Etubom Rex Willians and Cross River Nationale - come accompanied by a thoroughly researched, 44-page booklet telling the story of the region's love affair with popular music. If you're interested in African funk, soul and disco, it should be an essential purchase.

Review: Presenting Winfield Parker's "Shake That Thing", originally on the Arctic imprint. It has been remixed by the legendary Tom Moulton from the original multi-track tapes, and in the words of the label themselves "this is another tough forty five." Arctic sure has some quality recordings to unearth and the tastemakers at Brewerytown Beats have made it their mission to present these records to the public once and for all. Moreover, they claim the series has more excellent unclassics on the horizon and to keep your ears peeled for them, coming soon.
