Dynamite (limited 7")
Cat: BGPS 042. Rel: 30 Mar 15
  1. Little Eva - "Dynamite" (2:21)
  2. Little Eva Harris - "Get Ready/Uptight" (2:32)
Review: Two awesome covers from Little Eva who, fittingly, is most famed for giving us the famously covered "Loco-Motion". "Dynamite" is homage to Mr Dynamite himself, the Godfather of Funk James Brown. Taking the "I Feel Good" hook and making it her own, it's an instant winner. "Get Ready/Uptight", meanwhile, is a medley of The Temptations and Stevie Wonder. It's very bit as tight you'd want it to be. Once stupendously rare, now your while this press run lasts. 100 per cent essential.

  2. Home Is Where the Hatred Is
Review: Wow, classics don't come much more special than this. A like-for-like repress of the 1970 RCA release, both sides here are soaked in Scott Heron's raw troubled soul. The endlessly sampled, hugely powerful and perfectly funky "Revolution" remains almost as poignant and prophetic as it was the day it was penned. "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" is much more personal and reveals his talent as a singer as much as the lead track boasts his poetry and ability to deliver a strong message.

Review: Classic jazz funk album from the legendary Johnny 'Hammond' Smith with a special version with six previously unissued bonus out-takes. Released in 1975 and his 32nd long player, it heralded a fresh chapter in his career that saw him exploring more electronic instrumentation and deeper shades of funk in a similar way to Roy Ayers or Bob James. The result was a timeless document that carries motifs of many of today's artists; the harmonies of "Can't We Smile?", for instance, smack of Plantlife while the punctuated piano work and mirrored squiggling synths on "Song For The Family" echoes with Flying Lotus-style whim. Also a key source of breaks for many junglists, Gears is a historic document that's not only played a strong role in electronic music but still sounds incredible today.

  1. The Turtles - "I'm Chief Kamanawanalea" (Chief Rocca edit) (3:42)
  2. Steady B - "Serious" (BDP 12" remix) (4:28)
Review: 1968's "I'm Chief Kamanawanalea" is perhaps one of the greatest forgotten nuggets of pure breakbeatism, and the original by The Turtles dates back to 1968. The date isn't perhaps that surprising in relation to the sounds used and the quirkiness of the tune, but it's the fact that it sounds like straight-up hip-hop from early 80s NY; Chief Rocca aka J Rocc does a bit of editing on this version, but the meat and bones of the original are definitely there. Steady B features on the flip with a remix from BDP, and this one is a pure throwback hip-hop banger like they used to make them - think Run DMC but much more from the underground.

  1. Maggie Thrett - "Soupy" (2:58)
  2. De La Soul - "Jenifer Taught Me" (3:51)
Review: Number 30 in the originals series highlights the link between Dynavoice Records and the Daisy Age hip hoppers who sampled many of the label's releases. We are of course talking about Posdnuos, Dave, and Maseo, aka De La Soul, with Originals wisely squaring attentions on the Northern Soul monster "Soup" by Maggie Thrett and the De La classic "Jenifa Taught Me" which featured ample sampleage. This Originals edition of "Soup" is the first time it's been available in the 7" format since it's initial release in 1965 and is the sort of cut you can drop in a funk jam and see the crowd melt. What more is there to say about "Jenifa Taught Me"? It's a classic mate!

Review: The self-professed 'Screaming Eagle of Soul' Charles Bradley continues his twilight storm into the affections of modern funk and soul fans with a prime seven inch taste of his upcoming album Changes. Bradley's latter day rise in cahoots with the inestimable Daptone has been a heart-warming story and he sounds in great fettle on this 45. Lead track "Change For The World" finds Bradley delivering an upbeat and brassy call to arms, detailing the current turmoil and offering a simple yet powerful prescription, "we've got to change our love, we've got to change for the world." Fans of the arrangement will be happy to see it appears in instrumental form in the shape of flipside track "Revelations."

Review: Record Store Day Edition: Concepts for the annual Record Store Day don't get better than this. Tall Black Guy, Eric Lau and Kidkanevil were invited to Mr Thing's gaff and explore his sizeable vinyl collection. They could sample anything they wished... But, as the title says, no vinyl could leave his house. The result is four examples of pure sample artistry. Eric Lau's "Chop For Mr Thing" takes a Latin strummer and stretches out its harmony over a nagging beats with really cool edits and space. Kidkanevil opts for a sludgier hip-hop approach where one simple loop opens and closes at different spaces over a nod-heavy beat. Elsewhere Tall Black Guy gets dreamy with a tripped out vocal sample and some stunning slippery bass action while Mr Thing provides the best schooling with a classic Dilla style loop that twists the full emphasis on one vocal cry and a weave of classic hip-hop cuts.

Review: Unfettered soul from one of the most consistent, reliable and loveable soul acts in modern days. "One In A Million" rolls with a gossamer groove thanks to its light-touched Hammond bed, tight horns and even tighter guitars. As always, the real focus (unless you're dropping the instrumental) is Nicole. Honeyed vocals that can't be mistaken, she fronts the track with heartfelt sentiment and subtlety that's hard to find in many new singers. Yet another reason why their album Happiness In Every Style will be worth the wait.

"Breaks All Tight" struts with a classic Motown feeling and a vocal power that's not dissimilar to Lee Fields. "Mama's Little Breakbeat" keeps it real with a swinging twist on Kris Peterson's "Mama's Little Baby". Both absolutely tickle the dance. Vinyl only, too.

Review: Two previously rare Julio Ernesto 'Fruko' Estrada productions on one super-juicy 45! First up are The Afrosound with a cover of The Chakachas' instantly recognisable "Fiebre En La Jungla". Throwing an array of steamy, sensuous vocal textures, it will cause some serious heat on any floor whose dancers knows the original. We remain in Columbia on the B as one of Wganda Kenya's rarest Disco Fuentes 45s gets a revisit. Heavily percussive cumbia laced with rich organ-primed funk, things get really hypnotic when the groove strips back to the insistent rhythm devices.

The short answer is not much, but we can certainly add to the list of compliments and tell you that this is a super-clean Polypro repress, so you don't have to go out your way to listen to it PROPERLY. The man, Roy Ayers, is obviously a legend who still performs to this day, but this album must be some of his best work, and contains the cult single "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", sampled by everyone form here to Katmandu, and still a flawless song to this day. This dude is up there with the lies Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, etc etc. A stone-cold classic.

Run Don't Walk Away finds the Sam Beaubien-led band working once more with vocalist Coco, and if you picked up Boss Lady, that 2013 funk jammer they previously collaborated on, you will be all over this like a bad suit. Then they release this, an LP comprised solely of two wondrously extended work outs from the troupe. Review: Released at the start of 2015, the inaugural Africa Airways collection was so successful it was repressed twice. Naturally this sophomore compendium of long-lost pan-African deep funk gems is equally as satisfying and enlightening. Ranging from the illustrious strings and tight disco groove of Ivory Coast's M'Bamina to the swooning vocals and arresting charge of Bongi Makeba by way of her mother mama Africa Myriam Makeba who closes the show with the tight pounding groove and commercial command "Toyota Fantasy", it's yet another triumphant collection for Africa Seven. Watch out for the Dutch anomaly mid-way; Oscar Harris's awesomely titled (and James Brown referencing) "Relax... Before Doing Sex" is guaranteed to light some fires whenever and wherever it's aired.

Review: Part of a series of reissues by Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids. Once privately pressed, Rhapsody In Berlin is the result of an extensive exploration of Africa before returning to the German capital. Both sides are built around one hooky refrain as each player takes the lead and the momentum into brave new areas. With a robust support from the heavy funk guitar backline and overwhelmingly funky drums, it's all about range of horns (muted or otherwise), flutes and pygmy flutes that weave tightly into each other with a sense of natural chaos. As the name of Idris's San Fran dance troupe suggests, this is a bona fide cultural odyssey.

Review: Apart from having been a pinnacle of both Sahko's and Warp's success over the years, Finland's Jimi Tenor is simply a great musician, a true visionary when it comes to dance - and non-dance - experimentalism, and one of the few truly imaginative minds left; yes, we know that's a bold statement, but it's what we truly believe. Here he is on Philophon with a deeply explorative 7", starting with the psychedelic hymns of "Order Of Nothingness", a song that seems to be drenched in 70's mysticism, but that somehow also sounds utterly contemporary. "Tropical Eel" is more left of field, where digitised Eastern melodies bleep to a steady, jazzy rhythm that simply calls for a head-nod. Recommended.

Review: Gerry Rooney and Joel Martin's Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold project return with a second release for everyone's favourite illicit edit concern Resista, with Special Versions packing a pair of irresistible disco obscurities for dancefloors that like it odd and eccentric. They begin with "Magic Wand Steel Band", an Afro-influenced, Island-friendly fusion of low-slung disco-funk breaks, sharp guitar licks and expansive steel band solos. Flip for the relentlessly rolling, synth boogie-goes-disco house genius of "Love Coma", which sounds like a late night festival anthem in the making. Review: Japan's super-prolific Soul Garden take an Afro-Cuban diversion for their latest release with one of the country's leading Afro-jazz troupes Bembe. The band - led by Yusuje Asano - have a reputation as a live act that is second to none but their releases aren't quite as prolific as their touring schedule. Last spotted on Hiroko Otsuka's Piece The Next mix last year, this is their first Soul Garden 45" and it's highly advisable you jump on it... "Bemeya Latin Strut" is a densely weaved jazz workout with elements at delicately balanced odds. "Dope Walk Slow Talk" is a much more sedate affair as the sax whips up a fire over a smouldering reggae beat. Dope indeed.

Here, you have twelve scorching slices of upbeat lament, and from "Hello Baby" - a masterful stroke of sunny funk - to "Now I Feel Good", the artist manages to bring back the spirit of the 1970's into a new and contemporary light. Gliding piano keys, powerful vocals, and a kick-ass production surely make Lack Of Afro one of the kings of modern soul.

Yes, we have just made that term up, but that is exactly the sort of tip that these guys were on back in the '70s, and each one of their releases had something new and fresh about them. Nate Calhoun's "Funktown" was no different, and its chirpy disco beat is led by a delightful organ and veritably sunny, happy-go-lucky vocals. "Have Some Of Me", on the other hand, is deeper and more soulful, a sublime little ballad for the lovers.

Review: The Foster Jackson Group are one of those forgotten but highly coveted one-hit disco wonders that exist in the bottomless pit that is often classed simply as 'soul'. All that aside, these people made an incredible 12" back in 1979 that has been going for serious bucks on the second-hand market, but thankfully the prodigious P&P Records have saved the day yet again. "Feel The Spirit" is a devilish, inimitable disco jingle that is split between the more percussion ridden "Long Disco Version", and a more contained, more floor-focussed "Disco Version" They both contain that instantly addictive dose of piano, though. Check it out, you'll know what we mean...

Review: As ever BBE are doing great things! Fresh off that killer Volcov compilation, the tireless soul operation get in archival mode for this essential reissue of the self-titled album from funk troupe Moods. Originally released back in 1978 on the Soiree label, original copies of the one and only album from Moods fetch much more than a pretty penny on the collectors market. For a spot of history on Moods, the St. Louis group formed in the late 70s and was headed by band leader, musician and producer Melvin Turnage. The group met in high school and disbanded soon afterwards, which is a great shame on this basis of this seven-track album which is a fantastic example of the Modern Soul sound which bridged the gap between Northern Soul and Disco, introducing synthesisers alongside incredibly tight vocal harmonies and lush instrumental arrangements.

Review: As played by Sadar Bahar two more slices of official dance floor dynamite from the Disco Fuentes catalogue get unleashed on the strictly vinyl only, singles only Mukatsuku Record label for summer 2013. First up is an unreleased version of the popular Wganda Kenya club favourite 'Tipit Hayed' which Blundetto had done a few years ago for his own DJ sets but never surfaced commercially. On the flipside a bona fide salsa funk monster which a piano intro to die for from Fruko Y Sus Tesos. The Juno edition of the single comes in exclusive packaging of kraft paper hand stamped inner sleeve, additional branded card sleeve, signed insert, sticker and plastic protective outer sleeve
