Ago (7" + MP3 download code)
Cat: NA 70377. Rel: 14 Nov 16
  1. Ago (4:07)
  2. Ago (instrumental) (4:09)
Review: The sounds of Johnny! have played a significant part in the popularity of afro beat over the last fifteen years. Quietly and tastefully, JJ Whitefield has been responsible for releasing a plethora of Ghanaian rock, including the country's most recent sensations, the incredibly talented Ebo Taylor. Since the 90s, this guys hasn't stopped releasing heat for a single minute, and his collaboration with Now Again has been one of the best and most consistent partnerships of the last decade. Along with Ebo Taylor, his on Henry, and percussionist-singer, Eric Owusu, Whitefield's Johnny! can do absolutely now wrong and, if this new single "Ago" is anything to go by, these guys are among the few making quality afro rock in the present day. The tune is rugged, lo-fi and a little hazy, bringing together elements of Zamrock and psych in the best possible way; there's also an instrumental for you on the flip.

Review: Fresh from 72: Two enormously influential funk gems from Jimmy Castor bunch's debut album It's Just Begun: The heavily-sampled title track is a veritable racecourse of a groove, hurtling around with cyclical glee and hooky chanting vocals while "Troglodyte" is a playful observation on man's more basic wants and needs. Both have aged exceedingly well... As has almost all of Jimmy Castor's work.

Review: It's more chilly, worldly outsider jazz gear from Barcelona's excellent Rocafort imprint; this time the crew return with the one-man show Kind & Kinky Zoo alongside Adam Gibbons, both making their debut for the label with this smart two-tracker. "Wonder Bra" is a solo mission from K&KZ, a fast-paced drum locomotive with plenty of whistling organs flying around in the high-ends, while Lack Of Afro's remix of "VLAM" by K&KZ and Adam Gibbons is a funkier, more laid-back swinger for a bit of one, two, three four on the dancefloor. Tidy 7" for the soul lovers!

Review: Taken from Lee's brand new album Special Night "Make The World" is Fields at his finest, fieriest and funkiest - a message of clear unity delivered with his signature gutsy vocals over a beautifully tight groove from The Expressions. Rolling with a real sense of momentum and cool drama, Fields and his troupe still have heaps of love to give. The feeling's mutual too.

Review: Serious reissue business: Be With take us back to 1971 for Air's one and only album. The brainchild of Googe Coppola (who you may recognise from Fire Island or cameos with Jeremy Steig) and her partner in jazz Tom Coppola, you can hear vapour trails of the pastoral, laidback folk of the late '60s with a more forthright funk energy and jazz mindset as the lovers and their bandmates dazzle us with meandering melodies and stories; from The Doors level organ frenzy of "Baby I Don't Know Where I Love" to the galloping momentum of "In Our Time" that suddenly stops dead into an almost medieval breakdown by way of ballads such as "Sister Bessie" and Afrobeat-style horn chaos like "Lipstick", this really captures an exciting time in music and, if the music is as honest as it seems, a rather exciting time in the lives of the Coppolas too...

Review: When you hear people talk about 'boogie', it's largely thanks to the music that resides on the catalogue of the SAM label, some to some of the most blazing electro-disco bangers from the '80s. Standing undisputed as one of the founding labels for the genre, Doris Duke's cover of Marlena Shaw's "Woman Of The Ghetto" is the perfect balance between soul and something else, something murkier, deeper, with a more electronic edge. Both the vocal and the instrumental cuts are serious weapons for any dance floor, and although they might be relatively slower compared to other SAM joints, they're still as sexy as hell...

Review: Unfettered soul from one of the most consistent, reliable and loveable soul acts in modern days. "One In A Million" rolls with a gossamer groove thanks to its light-touched Hammond bed, tight horns and even tighter guitars. As always, the real focus (unless you're dropping the instrumental) is Nicole. Honeyed vocals that can't be mistaken, she fronts the track with heartfelt sentiment and subtlety that's hard to find in many new singers. Yet another reason why their album Happiness In Every Style will be worth the wait.

Review: Released at the start of 2015, the inaugural Africa Airways collection was so successful it was repressed twice. Naturally this sophomore compendium of long-lost pan-African deep funk gems is equally as satisfying and enlightening. Ranging from the illustrious strings and tight disco groove of Ivory Coast's M'Bamina to the swooning vocals and arresting charge of Bongi Makeba by way of her mother mama Africa Myriam Makeba who closes the show with the tight pounding groove and commercial command "Toyota Fantasy", it's yet another triumphant collection for Africa Seven. Watch out for the Dutch anomaly mid-way; Oscar Harris's awesomely titled (and James Brown referencing) "Relax... Before Doing Sex" is guaranteed to light some fires whenever and wherever it's aired.

Review: Jalapeno's northern funkers Smoove & Turrell gear up for their fourth studio album Crowd Posada with two superlative songs that at once demonstrate their range and innate soul ability. "Could Have Been A Lady" has a deep bluesy rock twang to its groove with just a toe or two in the pub while the curiously titled "Glue Bag Flags" takes us on a much sleazier trip with samples, a slinky bassline, a perfectly executed vocal Q&A and a zero-to-sixty tempo switch when you least expect it. Bring on the album.

Review: Destination Nigeria, 1975, Fela and Africa 70 are indelibly locked into a hugely prolific groove with well over 10 albums behind them. Then they release this, an LP comprised solely of two wondrously extended work outs from the troupe. "Expensive Shit" famously tells the tale of Fela's brush with the jaded law while "Water No Get Enemy" speaks - or rather sings - for itself. One of Fela's many notable and hugely influential releases; your collection isn't complete without it.

Review: 1978's Metallic Funk Band by The Mighty Flames is an impossible record to find in its original format. So are, in fact, that its first reappearance came about in 2015, with a single from the LP coming out through the Voodoo Funk label, but Austria's PMG have done us the courtesy of re-releasing the entire album. There is no other way of describing this wonderful music apart from saying that it's a wonderful collection of deep, psychedelic funk bombs of the highest calibre and, while many unearthed albums of this time have gained notoriety in recent years, this particular piece of work has remained in the shadows; once a digger's privilege, it is now available for you in its complete form, as raw and mystical as the day it was first conceived.

Milton Wright's perfect deep Soul classic "Keep It Up" has always been a top shelf record, everything about it is almost flawless! Whether it's Milton's silky vocal delivery, the incessant guitar driven back beat or the total space Funk vibe of his omnipresent ARP-2600 synthesizer this record has it all. Originally released on TK Disco's more Soul and Funk orientated Alston label which was home to many legendary artists and records, this 1975 sunshine classic never fails to make people move. A classic rare groove indeed. "The Silence That You Keep" takes up side-B, a jazzy, flute driven love song that again features Milton's perfect voice and some fantastic arrangement. A real gem of a record, with the original 45 changing hands for over L100 a time in used condition.

This is the first time "Keep It Up" has been re-issued in it's original 45 rpm format with the original Alston label artwork. It's been re-mastered, re-pressed and made available again with the permission of TK Disco / Alston Records, Miami Florida, USA.

Even if you don't know it by name, Moreira's "Celebration Suite" should be instantly familiar, a jazz-fusion/samba batucada anthem that truly lives up its joyous name!! Flip it over and Gilberto Gil is on hand for a more mellow accompaniment in the shape of bossa samba standard "Maracatu Atomico," lifted from his 1975 album Viramundo. Review: Brainstorm was the first act signed to Clarence Avart's Tabu Records, way back in 1976. By the time they released "Hot For You" in 1979, they'd already become one of the most talked-about disco-funk outfits in the United States. Here, that legendary track gets the Danny Krivit re-edit treatment, with the legendary New York DJ/producer wisely stretching out the rubbery, low-slung groove, hazy horn lines and urgent, sexually-charged vocal. On the flip, Krivit turns his attention to "Journey To The Light", the lead cut from the band's 1978 album of the same name. A far sweeter, woozier and more emotional cut than the A-side club-rocker, it's nevertheless a fine chunk of horn-heavy, synth-laden disco-funk goodness.

Review: Dam Funk and Nite Jewel first joined forces way back in 2009 for what most thought was a one-off collaboration. Here, they're reunited once more for their first joint 12" release. Nite-Funk is every bit as special as you'd expect, taking the best of both artists' musical repertoire - Dam Funk's authentic '80s synth-soul, and Nite-Funk's sparkling, deep analogue synth-pop - and turning them into something new and involving. The EP boasts vocal and instrumental versions of four tracks: the Michael Jackson style '80s soul-pop of "Let Me Be Me", the heartfelt, late night radio slow jam "Love X2", the sax-laden, Sade-goes-soulful house flex of "U Can Make Me", and the deliciously dreamy "Don't Play Games".

Review: Perennial crate-diggers BBE have long been capable of unearthing hidden gems and shining a light on long-forgotten scenes. Here, with the help of fellow vinyl-sniffer Mr Peabody, they highlight Chicago's little-known 1970s/early 1980s underground disco and boogie scene. For those reared on the familiar sounds of New York disco and boogie, it's something of a revelation. Certainly, there's plenty for disco enthusiasts to get excited about here, from the piano & horn laden grooves of Sheila Hutchinson and Nedra to the tribal, African-influenced dancefloor rhythms of Lady Gwendolyn and Africa International. Along the way, expect to hear everything from hustlin' party jams and essential 80s groove to crackly disco-funk and distinctly cosmic soul. Absolutely essential!

Review: It doesn't seem like five years since BBE last invited London crate digger and turntablist Mr Thing to get his fingers dusty by picking out gems from his record collection for the Strange Breaks & Mr Thing series. Predictably, this belated third installment is full of killer selections that lives up to it's subtitled billing as More Rock Funk Soul Jazz & Soundtrack Breaks For Modern Living. Favourites come thick and fast though the low down funk of Dynamic Concept's "La Da Da" and the jazz-funk goodness of Harry Beckett's "Ring Within Rings" stand out upon first listen. The cats at BBE spare no expense either with this vinyl edition that features fifteen cuts spread across the two slabs, and there's also Mr Thing's peerless mix available on a CD that's slipped in too.

Review: Perhaps a lurch into the direction of head-spinning psychedelic guitar-driven groove wasn't where fans of DJ Format expected him to go next, but this compilation is proof positive that this man will doggedly pursue the funkiest of sound to the ends of the earth and the very edge of sanity. Collecting together gems from all over the globe, including such far-flung quarters as Uruguay and Yugoslavia, he creates a dizzying and ecstatically fuzzed-out melange that has no problem with jumping off the audial deep end in the pursuit of oblivion and ecstasy. Both a heady triumph and a cleansing experience for the third eye.

  2. Sounds Of The City Experience - "Getting Down" (4:06)
Review: Weston's curatorial crusade continues as he unearths more criminally overlooked/under-pressed rarities from the golden ages; "Losing You" comes from Courtial and Errol Knowles outstanding 1976 soul jazz album. The most straight up soul joint from the album, it's an instant sweat-fest with real guts behind both the vocals and instrumentation. Flip for the jazz funk whirlwind that is "Getting Down". Taken from their eponymous, once-super rare ($1500 per copy rare) album (also released in 76), it's an instrumental hurricane led by strings, horns and bombastically swung drums. Powerful. Review: Sampled by the likes of Groove Armada and The Herbaliser, "Turn Off The Lights" runs with one of those bass licks you've known forever without realising. Flip for the jazz boogie badness of "Fuel For The Fire". Taken from the same 1975 album, here we find the same vocalist, Linda Logan, sharpening her tongue and getting her scat on with furiously funky results. Hard to find on 45, it's yet another example of AOTN's expert curation prowess.
