  8. Monks On The Rum
Review: Coming completely out of nowhere, this collaborative album between two of dubstep's most revered producers is not only one of this year's best examples of the genre, but some of the best dubstep to emerge since the demise of Shackleton and Appleblim's Skull Disco label in 2008. In a landscape increasingly dominated by the sounds of genre hopping post-dubstep, this album is a timely reminder of the dark spaces dubstep once inhabited; "Jellybones" for instance utilises eastern percussion manipulated to increasing degrees of mind-warping confusion, whilst "Levitation" weaves furious rhythms around radiophonic weirdness, while closer "Monks On The Rum" is a gripping exercise in tension, contrasting cut-glass percussion with a hesitant bass. But for all the structural complexity of these tracks, for example in "Rooms Within a Room", which weaves a brooding string intro and sampled choir around traditional dubstep atmospheres, the pair have never sounded so focused. Essential.

  4. Undeadman (Mordant Music remix)
Review: Not content with dropping the delirious "Deadman", Sam Shackleton offers up another must-have release in the shape of this expansive double pack. Lead cut "Fireworks" is classic Shackleton - a skittering dubstep/dub techno fusion that makes delicious use of echo-laden congas, foreboding noises and distant, Middle Eastern melodies. It's utterly spellbinding. T++ remixes, delivering a ricocheting dub take. On the second disc, Shackleton reveals "Undeadman", a kind of bizzaro universe mix of "Deadman". It's pleasingly creepy, working odd samples and strange found sound around a solid, dancefloor-friendly rhythm. Flip for an excellent remix from Mordant Music, which makes brilliant use of a live dub bassline.

Review: It's a house-grime marriage on Bristol's Black Acrel label, from newfound dup Wallwork and Nico Lindsay, the latter of the two bringing the vocal street swagger to the beats. The title track "Facts" is a big, bad, heavy slab of percussion and bass powered by Lindsay's curbside lyricism, and it's one of those tunes that's bound to get shit tarted in the dance. This is followed by the more kinetic flow of "Fyah", where Lindsay's vocals are more minimal than its predecessor, and its rough and rugged instrumental for maximum DJ damage. Another banging addition to the Black Acrew crew - yes!

Review: Zomby returns to Hyperdub with his first album in three years, trailed in high profile fashion by that Burial collaboration "Sweetz." That particular tune is one of Ultra's headline attractions, alongside eyebrow-raising collaborations with Darkstar, Banshee and Rezzett. What really impresses, though, is the skewed, left-of-centre nature of the mask-wearing producer's heavy, post-grime rhythms, sparse but sparkling synth work, and the breathlessly cut-up R&B vocals dotted throughout the set. Interestingly, there are subtle nods towards new wave synth-pop, ghetto-tech, spacey ambient and alien IDM, making Ultra Zomby's most intriguing and consistently on-point album to date.

Review: Woof! Hyperdub bring together two of the most recognisable and enigmatic artists of recent times on this 10", as Zomby and Burial square down ahead of the former's new album for the label. Zomby's Ultra LP is undoubtedly one of this year's most anticipated albums and "Sweetz" suggests it may be a very moody affair indeed. Whilst rooted in UK dance, Zomby and Burial do look elsewhere for inspiration too. Just under seven minutes long, "Sweetz" veers through various sub-heavy soundscapes with intermittent rhythmic patters and a distinctive looped vocal sample whose pitch changes with dramatic effect.

Review: Dom Tarasek aka Commodo has already appeared on perhaps the biggest dubstep labels around, and he made his name from the string of releases on Mala's Deep Medi Muzik - not exactly a bad place to start your career, that's for sure. However, he's now branching out to other quality households, and this new LP on Black Acre feels just right in every single way. Right because his deep, brooding sound fits ever so well with the rest of the label, and right because How What Time flows perfectly as an album unit. There are three tunes on each side of the two slabs of wav, and they work as perfect, tidy trios that carry the same sort of leftward bass sound, one that never goes to deep as to become abstract, but also never gets too violent as to become silly. All in all, it is masterfully executed dubstep for the 2016 palate. Killer.

We've watched his murky world unravel over the course of EPs... But nothing could compare us for the complex web he's weaved on his debut album. The off-beat percussive textured groove of "84600", the pitched drum riff on "Stickman" and the slinky-but-snakelike rhythm on "Menacer" are just three of the eight delights on offer here. Tempa are having a fine year and Inside Nomine may be their crowning glory of 2015.

Review: Following on from his debut artist album Cyclical in 2008, Brighton based producer, Ital Tek brings us his sophomore outing, Midnight Colour on the highly respected Planet Mu imprint. Kicking off with "Neon Arc" - a deliciously fuzzy broody number, with a nod to the Joker-style 'Bristol Sound' in the synths - it's a promising start to what soon unfolds into a magnificent album. Moving through the melodic, reflective Mount Kimbie style "Talis" with its evocatively drawn dripping and chiming, and hollow textured soundscape, to the more abrasive "Moonbow" and "Babylon", it's easy to see why Ital Tek has garnered such a reputation for himself in such a short time. Midnight Colour picks up on the sound that has come to define Ital Tek, taking the whole 'post-dubstep' tip to new lengths, weaving 2-stepping garage rhythms round sonic textures with plenty of moody atmospheric melancholy.

The former comes with more of dancefloor edge due to its slight skip in the kicks and a gangster hook. The latter, as the name suggests, is total sunrise material thanks to its evocative chords, trembling synths and sense of restraint. This one's a percy.

Review: Jamie Vex'd returns to his Kuedo project after several years working both underground and commercial sector as an engineer, sound designer and composer. His return couldn't have happened soon enough. "Slow Knife" is anchored by a strong sense of score-like sci-fi throughout as tracks such as the spectrum creeping alien trains of "Slow Knife" and the smouldering twangs and pensive vibrations of "Love Theme" create a dense, sense-blurring narrative. Elsewhere Jamie finds time to escape into raw futuristic soul ("In Your Sleep"), wry broken beat dancefloor procession ("Floating Forest") and overwhelmingly immersive sound design ("Broken Fox") This is just the tip of a sonic iceberg that will take many exciting listens to get acquainted with.

Review: Indigo and Synkro return for Houndstooth duty under the Akkord guise, with HTH020 their first material for the fabric-affiliated label since last year's roundly praised debut album. That long player was perhaps the most confident display of the sound design-heavy production style the Mancunian pair had been narrowing in on since their cultish white label bow, but this new 12" finds them adding whole new levels of darkness to the mix. Moody low end sits deep in the channels; given the space to breath by Akkord who seem careful to restrict their drum samples to the barest of appearances at times (see "Gravure") whilst those out there that enjoyed the Millie + Andrea album for Modern Love will probably gravitate towards "Continuum" which showcases a murky, raw take on breakbeat-led jungle.

Review: Callum "Paleman" Lee is one of Swamp 81's most decorated artists, having released a string of well-regarded 12" singles for the hyped, bass-obsessed imprint. Yrs Ago is his third EP for the label's 81 offshoot, and sees him joining the dots between techno, post-dubstep bass music, and angular electronica. The title track sets the tone, with robotic voices, creepy electronics and smooth sub-bass riding a metallic, broken techno groove. Flipside "Animus" is a marginally more melodic affair, with spacey chords and bubbling arpeggio lines riding a punchy electro rhythm. Both tracks are naturally rather heavy, and undoubtedly amongst the producer's strongest work to date.

Their long-time favourite, Elgato returned to Hessle Road with this stunning 2-tracker and its opener, "Zone" is a pleasingly odd bass rhythm, placing its deranged vocal firmly on top of the detached percussion elements swaying alongside the shimmering injections of lower frequencies. On the flip we have "Luv Zombie", another gorgeously far-out experimentation by our man Elgato, where his fast-paced drum shuffles meet distant waves of harmonics. This comes with a highly recommended stamp as per usual!

Review: Hessle Audio's emergence from hibernation in 2012 really has seen the label release some of the most extraordinary music of its life, and this EP from Bandshell might top the lot. Tapping into the grainy, murky sound world of the like of STL, Shed and Actress, this record explores strange rhythms constantly on the verge of breaking out into a frenzy. The title track is comprised of little more than rattling percussion and dense, fizzy bass, while "Rise 'Em" places a jungle breakbeat atop a mucky hum. On the flip, "Metzger" takes the vibe of classic dubstep and fills it with subtle melodies and clipped snares, but "Dog Sweater" is the real killer - a homage to soundsystem culture whose threadbare rhythms are the only thing to stop you being dragged into the track's viscous centre. Make no mistake, this is a serious new talent.

Big horns and authentic dynamics and arrangements; you really don't get much more rootsy than this... "Trident" is all about the plucked guitar line and star-gazing trumpet, "Common Rules" is more about the whole bass groove that leans heavily into the future supported by a select amount of hazy instruments. Essential for any daytime outdoor sets you have this summer.

Although primarily known for their incendiary grime bangers on their own Bandulu imprint, and the dancehall sounds of last year's Backchat single, Kahn & Neek's steppahs-influenced Gorgon Sound project is a chance for them to expand on Bristol's rich legacy of dub, reggae, and soundsystem culture. Since the pair decided to begin the project in 2010, Gorgon Sound has since evolved into a full dubplate DJ operation, with a show made up of entirely their own material. Last year saw the Gorgon Sound project see its first vinyl release, in the form of "Find Jah Way", which featured on the debut released from Bristol's Peng Sound; this double 12" release presents a more expansive take on their steppahs sound, featuring four cuts of West Country bassweight with guest vocalist spots from Brazil's Junior Dread and Bristol's Guy Calhoun.

Review: Longstanding Manchester murk merchant Biome returns to Deep Heads' abyss-peering On The Edge series with three more timeless constructions: "Turn" taps into his mystical UKG palette with lingering percussive rolls and dreamy late-2000s synth strikes, "Remembrance" is a loose-jointed hat-tip to proper deep house with its velvet chords and jazzy shuffle while "Niagra" closes the show on a pacey tech tip that wouldn't have gone amiss on Moving Shadow in the mid 90s. Don't look down.

  3. Insight (4:31)
Review: Amit's AMAR imprint continues its consistent run of fresh 140 form with New Zealand dub-wiser Akcept. Easing us in with crisp keys, we're soon introduced to his spacious sense of groove and lean instrumentation as "Peace Pipe" lurks and lingers before a lavish horn sample hits midway. "The Streets" takes us further down Akcept's melodic rabbit hole as Clinton Sly spits and sermons over a more colourful version of the riddim. "Insight" takes the prize for heaviest dancefloor cut with a bouncing sub line that tramples with abandon beneath a flow of dubby FX and textures. Playful but ultimately deep and dark, these guys aren't mucking around.

Review: Fresh from his cavalcade of beats on WPF, Dullah makes his Oil Gang debut and it's every bit as shiny and slick as you'd expect as toxic dollops of drama hang of every cinematic dynamic. Instant hench appeal is created with the strings on "Ballys On", sci-fi synths seduce the cosmic mover in the most chiselled of Gs on "Time" while Oil Gang get their own theme tune by way of floaty synth chimes and a classic b-boy bass funk. Throw in the self-fulfilling "Floating" and you've got yourself a winning document. Never a Dullah moment at Oil Gang eh?

  2. Behind Schedule (5:37)
Review: You'll have to move fast to cop a copy of this limited, hand-stamped 12" from fast-rising producer Jook, whose debut 10" on Reloadz was one of the underground grime/post-dubstep hits of 2016. A-side "Juice" is a weighty, clandestine affair, with ricocheting percussion hits, creepy sonic textures and effects-laden vocal shots combining brilliantly with Jook's sizeable sub-bass surges. Flipside "Behind Schedule" is built around an altogether snappier dancefloor riddim, with warped bass, intergalactic electronics and far-out effects only emphasizing the alien nature of Jook's impeccable production.

Review: Barely a fortnight has passed since the gully Frenchman we know and love as Monsieur Von D shared an exceptional release with Egoless and already he's back. This time he's on Infernal Sounds, which is already proof of its quality - considering how selective and detail-oriented the label have been since launching two years ago. "Cross Of Hendaye" is a solid mechanical roller with heaps of human funk coded into the waspy bassline. "Remember" is a straight up homage to the early days with a sub that palpitates so heavily and tangibly your own heartbeat will sync within seconds. True to the craft.

Review: Mystic instrumentals from the south west area courtesy of Mr Mitch's irrepressible Gobstopper label. Odeko makes his EP debut with four future-focused adventures in the exciting fertile land between experimental grime and glistening, formula-free electronica. From the pulsating subs and wavy melodic twangs of "Setsuko" to the shimmering-but-mangled harp echoes of "Sugar Acid", very few parallels can be made bar, perhaps, Chinese grime aficionado Swimful. Far East by inspiration, far out by design, Odeko is on to something special here.

Review: Back in the spring, Jason 'Aether' Taylor delivered one of the more assured vinyl debuts of the year; a collection of evocative ambient soundscapes and gentle dubstep rhythms entitled Von. This belated follow-up continues in a similar vein, with the Scottish producer prioritized beauty and melodic intent over dancefloor weight. That's not to say that his beats and basslines aren't solid, it's just that what really catches the ear is Taylor's use of intricate piano figures, dreamy female vocal samples, glacial sonic textures, and mood-enhancing chord progressions. It's a blend that results in music more suited to reclined listening than over-enthusiastic dancing. When the music is this picturesque, though, who are we to argue?

Review: Following last year's sudden reappearance on Trusik, Tony Williams (most commonly known these days as Addison Groove) has clearly rekindled his love for 140 music in a major way. Not only with brand new originals, but the re-launch of his hugely respected Transistor imprint. It's a fittingly delicious release to relaunch with, too... "Atijo" is a rolling techno-influenced jam with gritty analogue edges to the relentless bass while "Ina" follows the similar energy but with very subtle African folk samples and lilting piano vapour trails. Welcome back Headhunter!

  4. The Undertaker (Darkness remix) (3:19)
Review: Now almost two years old, Trends and JLSXND7RS break-heavy thunder-cut "The Undertaker" is now on its third lease of life. First as an original instrumental, then as a riotous grime cut with Flirta D, now as a four-pack of killer versions: P Jam twists up the drums and prangs out the bass with a little more FX and space. Hi5 Ghost starts off lightly with a sci-fi sheen and gradually builds the drums with added crunch. Impey turns the bassline into a rubber ball over a pneumatic two-step with Radioactive Man style funk while Darkness takes straight back to 2000 with a clap-heavy dark garage salute.

Review: As part of the Swing Ting collective, Murlo has established himself in the thrust of cutting-edge bass sounds emanating from the UK. As well as outings for Glacial Sound and Unknown To The Unknown, he has forged a solid connection with Dre Skull's Mixpak label, who he returns to for Odyssey. From the emotive, arpeggio-rich delights of "Cascade" to the scattered string hype of "Moodswung" the crisp, sharply defined lines of Murlo's productions positively surge out of the speakers with a confidence that belies the short time the London-based artist has been releasing music for. Of all the cuts the harder tones of "Furnace" are almost guaranteed to score plenty of plays in genre-spanning sets.

Review: A proper slice of history here: They Call Me Raptor (to use his full title) cooked these up over 10 years ago... Yet they still sound fresher than a lot of the competition today. Loosely swung, sample-rich and fearless in their drama and range, these will blow just as many minds now as they did when they first emerged on dub. Ranging from the eastern string badness of "Magic Circle" to the funk-riddled "Da Stooge" (which is more akin to hip-hop than grime), this really is premium gear. No formula adhered to, full character displayed - these are still ahead of their time now.
