  4. Knights Of Ren (Lemz & Hi5Ghost remix) (4:54)
Review: Bristol grime time: Asa & Sorrow step away from the deeper, ambient, home-chilling beats for something club-ready and waiting for MC damage. "Island Wave" is the waviest cut of the bunch thanks to its ever-changing tones and far-away vocal textures, "Knights Of Ren" is the murkiest cut of the bunch, sabre slicing up the dance like Kylo while "Barbaric" does that really creepy staccato string thing that both Asa and Sorrow do so well. Finally we hit the Lemz & Hi5Ghost twist of the lead track. Utilising the strings for more drama and spacing out the beats/bass, it's a neat switch up that retains full respect to the original.

  1. Derivate - "All My Homies Clappin'"
  2. Beto Narme - "Let's Get In On"
  3. Gantz - "Soul Is A Lie"
  4. Stiver - "Bergamo"
Review: Istanbul's Sublime Porte describe themselves as a team of creative individuals, and what began initially as a net label back in 2008 has latterly blossomed into the physical realm. Sublime Porte's output has been inspired by various strands of electronic music, but it's the hardcore continuum that dominates proceedings on the split release Various Beats From Sublime Artists Vol.I 12". Derivate opens proceedings with "All My Homies Clappin," an effervescent exercise in Bass music that has the sort of musicality you would find on an Eglo B Side, whilst the spirit of Marvin Gaye is mixed up with murky basslines and swung rhythms on Beto Narme's contribution. Face down "Soul Is A Lie" finds Gantz in introspective mood and Stiver's final cut "Bergamo" has a touch of the Autonomics about it.

Review: Senseless unleash a mucky double headed beast from Leeds, uniting the talents of Sasquatch and label head Sarantis in a grimy clash of body scanning subs and rudeboy halfstep swagger. Sasquatch throws the first smack to the chops with "Doll's Eyes", hitting hard and gritty with a grimacing sub-bassline, leaden drop-kick drums and acid-eaten moodiness. On the flip Sarantis brings "Badman", a dynamic display of densely layered sub bass Scientifics to cause some serious wobbling air disturbance on any system up to the task, Chest plate warning!

Review: Gourmet return with another tasty treat: Sepia's on the chef flex with a glistening two course meal... "Harp Song" lilts softly with string-plucking grace before spasmodic kicks fire up from the rear and completely takeover the track with physical prowess. "Music Box" contains some equally delicate sounds. But in this instance the drums are present from the off, giving it an instant punch for the floors. Sitting somewhere between grime, bass and dubstep, there's a really refreshing air to both sides.

  4. Undeadman (Mordant Music remix)
Review: Not content with dropping the delirious "Deadman", Sam Shackleton offers up another must-have release in the shape of this expansive double pack. Lead cut "Fireworks" is classic Shackleton - a skittering dubstep/dub techno fusion that makes delicious use of echo-laden congas, foreboding noises and distant, Middle Eastern melodies. It's utterly spellbinding. T++ remixes, delivering a ricocheting dub take. On the second disc, Shackleton reveals "Undeadman", a kind of bizzaro universe mix of "Deadman". It's pleasingly creepy, working odd samples and strange found sound around a solid, dancefloor-friendly rhythm. Flip for an excellent remix from Mordant Music, which makes brilliant use of a live dub bassline.

  1. Be At His Command
  2. Vor Und Zuruck
Review: With one single from pioneering producer Shackleton having already emerged on his Woe To The Septic Heart! Label this year in the shape of the synthesis-based Freezing Opening Thawing, he makes a swift return with the first installment of the Deliverance Series. Fans of his last work will be right at home with the minimal, almost Villalobos-esque sounds of "Beat His Command", whose wiry arpeggio seems capable of tunnelling its way directly into your brain. "Vor Und Zuruck" continues the synthetic choir motif of its associate, melding Shackleton's trademark percussive bounce with an almost weightless structure and progressively psychedelic structure that sounds like a digitised acid trip. This is still recognisably Shackleton, but it sounds like he's rebuilt his sound from the ground up.

Cat: ONUVS 1025. Rel: 18 Nov 13
  1. Music Killer (extended mix)
  2. Music Killer (Dubplate Pressure)
Review: Music Killer is an appropriately titled second release from the almighty pairing of Pinch and Adrian Sherwood who are clearly enjoying bringing their respective and respected production talents to the table in a studio situation. Whilst the Bring Me Weed 12" released earlier this year was very good it felt a bit like Sherwood and Ellis were only just feeling out where the partnership could go, the two tracks here sound like the results of some extensive studio time for the pair. Having road tested the record on the Juno office stereo it has be said headphones or laptop speakers just don't do justice to the deeply trippy bass weight of "Music Killer" in either it's extended or dubplate pressure version. The former crunches through a 130+bpm riddim and is blessed with all manner of toasting whilst Sherwood is granted the space on the latter to lay down some typically mind-bending reverb and delay effects.

Review: Amid his current announcements that he will be playing house, techno and disco at all performances from now on, Ollie Jones unleashes the seventh instalment of previously unreleased material. Ranging from the sultry pop soul of the Kelis-fronted "Copy Cat" to the classic Croydon savagery of "Vacillate" and "Scrooge's Revenge", it's one of the broadest "Skreamizm" collections to date. For an idea of his new sonic ventures head for "Sticky": it's like Alter Ego but with grittier, more Londoncentric charms.

Review: Their third birthday in tickling's distance, London grime institution Boxed catapult a new series of 12" releases featuring the work of their talented crew members and affiliates. Slackk & Dullah Beatz take us on a trippy walk through the woods where the toads croak bass, leaves crunch like tuned toms and branches snap like precision snares. Lloyd SB brings the breaks with stuttering edits and subtle amen splashes while Trends contemporises Geeneus's classic "Old Skool 2". Finally, we wrap up with the tear-jerking synthetic lullaby from Spokes. If you're not touched by "Tragedy In The Jasmine Garden" you are officially dead inside.

Review: Taken from his debut album Whole Other, Richard delivers a two-sided session that covers every aspect of the party... His original is a tightly woven web of breezy pads, delicate drums and velvet vocals while Mala's side takes us deep into the dance with treacle subs, heaving harmonies, lolloping beats and a dramatic, off-beat fill that's straight out of an art house film before morphing into a main bass hook. Every side wins.

Review: 300 reasons to be cheerful... Spooky's returned with another pranged out grime bouncer. Taking an evocative King Leonidas sample and using it as a trigger point for iced out sci-fi synths, 808 beats and squelchy robot bass, it's another stone-cold Spooky slapdown. Asa & Sorrow switch up on the remix, adding a more of a gun-slinging chug to the drums while retaining the gutsy 'no retreat, no surrender' vibe of the original. Biblical.

Review: Rumours and hushed gossip have shrouded "Nautilus" in mystique for almost four years now. All sludgy, slo-mo and baked in dense pads and processed dog barks, it still sounds as crazy as it did when Strago first unveiled it all those years ago. Likewise for RDG's loopy, percussion-primed tech rub. The wait is over... But hurry as Niteshade are only pressing 300 copies of this and promise never to repress. You know what to do.

Review: Bristol badness: Blacklink deliver another limited vinyl-only beat collection and every track's an under-the-counter creeper. Strict Fact takes Britney's finest and sullies it up with grimy stickiness, Tarquin does that jazz thing that sits somewhere between MJ Cole and Derrick Carter, Marcx gives Ciara the ride of her life while Grizzle closes the show on a pitched up Trey Songz wavey flex. Review: Rinse FM DJs and Butterz founders Elijah and Skilliam have been credited with bringing grime back to some of London's most prestigious clubs, not least Fabric, where they began a residency last year. It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that they've been given a chance to mix the latest volume in the club's FabricLive series. Predictably, they've nailed it, too, dropping a mix that showcases the best of UK bass music - particularly contemporary trends in grime and garage, with just the right amount of old school flavour - while containing a high number of unreleased tracks, exclusive reworks and even some new verses from scene legends Newham Generals.

Review: Many people are proclaiming the mix CD dead, but Fabric are still approaching the format with a sense of renewed ingenuity. Mathew Jonson's recent effort took shape as a recording of the Cobblestone Jazzer's live performance at the club's birthday celebrations last year, whilst the latest Fabriclive mix is quite a landmark. Put together by longtime grime bastion Logan Sama, the 24-track mix CD has been accompanied by a 4LP set featuring every instrumental cut used!! A brief glance at the tracklisting for this vinyl set shows Logan has called on some true grime royalty with productions from Wiley, JME, Kahn & Neek, Jammer, Preditah, and Footsie all contributing and excelling.

Review: To be honest, it's about time that Logan Sama had the space to compile his own series of mythical London club Fabric's, Fabriclive series. The grime DJ started his career back on the equally important Rinse FM back in 2002, and has been an important part of the club's development over the years that saw grime and dubstep blow up. At number 83 in the series, Sama drops a selection of tunes that are wholly representative of his DJ sets in Fabric's Room 1; the mix contains tunes by everyone from grime pioneer Wiley, to vocalist and producer JME, and a whole load of lesser known names that have kept the grime scene evolving. This is the real deal, there ain't not other like it around these days. Recommended.

Review: The much-lauded Jamie XX rework of Gil Scott-Heron's 2010 album I'm New Here finally arrives, and it's pretty darn good. In truth there's little quite as gorgeously ambitious as the strangely anthemic teaser single "NY Is Killing Me" (included here), but that doesn't stop it being an excellent listen. Not so much a set of remixes as a total reproduction, We're New Here places the veteran beat poet's distinctive vocals at the heart of a heady, other-worldly soup of eclectic beats (think dubstep, hip-hop and wonky house), booming basslines, sparkling house riffs, blissful melodies and paranoid late night atmospherics. A near perfect 33 minutes, all told.
