Balaklava (12")
A14
Cat: A 1403. Rel: 18 Jul 16
  1. Balaklava (6:46)
  2. Orphic (6:55)
Review: Bank-robbing bass: Bristolian Pessimist dons his head gear for two slabs of deep dark rolling D&B on Blackest Ever Black vinyl-only offshoot A14. Driven by the bellowing subs more than any other element, "Balaklava" is a penetrative demonstration of sonic pressure that's relieved as the rolling kicks and snares break through the heavy low end fog. "Orphic" takes more of a techno approach with industrial strength drums shaking with dubby reverb over electrical hornet's nest buzzes. Intense.

Invisible 021 EP (double 12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: INVISIBLE 021. Rel: 18 Jul 16
  1. Current Value - "Impact" (4:30)
  2. Dauntless - "Geomancy" (4:57)
  3. Kije & Jay Myhtix - "Perebor" (4:34)
  4. Fre4knc - "Tradecraft" (5:41)
Review: Belly button deep into 2016 and Noisia serve up the second Invisible VA EP of the year. Once again, it's a range of old friends and new. And while the first VA session focused primarily on halftime inventions, this one is straight up D&B: Current Value takes the lead with harrowing cries over an industrial strength groove, Aussie newblood Dauntless lays down a lean Silent Witness-style design, Russian/English partnership Kije & Jay Mythix get wobblesome on the drums while Fre4knc delivers a classic subby roller with just enough twisted FX to keep it future. Yet another immaculate curation.

Cat: LOSTDUBS 002. Rel: 18 Jul 16
  1. Lost Eternity (Verb remix) (5:21)
  2. Haze (DJ Future remix) (6:00)
Review: Six years have passed since jungle legend Trace last dusted off any classics and this time he's provided the parts to friends old and new. Veteran Verb brings the 21 year old "Lost Entity" up to speed with much wilder, heavier and faster drums but the same spine-melting chords. New(ish) face to DSCi4 DJ Future is let loose on 1995 track "Haze" and completely rebuilds it from its stark minimal roots into a steaming slab of paranoid hardcore grit. Muscular.

Silence LP Sampler 2 (heavyweight vinyl 12" in hand-stamped sleeve)
Cat: OCCLT 0072. Rel: 18 Jul 16
  1. Impish - "Go Ahead" (5:32)
  2. Impish - "Lie" (feat Vasilisa) (6:23)
  3. Impish - "Silence" (7:03)
  4. Impish - "Humans" (4:52)
Review: Ahead of the full release Russian ragamuffin Impish delivers the second sampler to his debut album Silence. And once again it's another full spread of styles and sounds. From the Total Science style drum funk of "Go Ahead" through to the almost rocky, driving Klute style "Humans" we're treated to string-laced, jazz-tinted soul "Lie" and rasping alien spacecraft-melting funk "Silence". Four very distinct vibes, all held together consistently with attention paid to space and some really detailed drum work. Bring on the full album!

The Redders EP (red vinyl 12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: CRITSYS 005. Rel: 18 Jul 16
  1. Redders & Sam Binga & Hyroglifics - "No Go" (3:14)
  2. Redders & Gorgon Sound - "96 In One" (4:20)
  3. Redders & Sam Binga - "Dem Ones" (2:15)
  4. Redders & Moresounds - "Sexy Or Sweet" (2:43)
  5. Ruffhouse & Clarity - "Aphasia" (Redders & Sam Binga remix) (4:47)
  6. Redders & Sam Binga & Hyroglifics - "Vintage" (feat MC DRS) (4:50)
Review: MC-focused EPs aren't particularly common in D&B. They're even less common on Critical. In fact this is the first. And it's a delight from the off as Redders teams up with mates old and new for a body of work that's more album than EP. "No Go" is all space-funk oddness with barely a bar in sight, "96 In One" is rapid fire storytelling over a dancehall version, "Dem Ones" is Redders' take on a dry-humping love song while "Sexy Or Sweet" sits somewhere between Toddla T and Barry White. Winding up "Aphasia" sees Redders and Sam flip Ruffhouse's dark tribal stamps into a carnival killer and "Vintage" sees the Bristol-based MC go toe-to-toe with the best MC in the game. One of a kind.

Way Down EP (limited 12")
Cat: ECS 002. Rel: 18 Jul 16
  1. Way Down (Dubkasm remix) (6:20)
  2. Come In (5:42)
  3. Way Down (Melodica Ben Dudding remix) (3:45)
Review: Sub bass silver from Australia's LQ as Echo Chamber dibby up his parts to Dubkasm and Ben Dudding for two stunning remixes. The formers gets mucky on a halftime digidub twist that will resonate well with fans of Moresound or Amit. The latter strips the back both in elements and time with an authentic Scientist-style studio re-build, all FX textures and thick whiffs of the cosmos. LQ's own dub jungle shakedown "Come In" seals this on-point deal.

Review: Pete "Technicolour" Rogers and Andy "Komatic" Powell first joined forces as Techninamtic back in 2012, subsequently releasing their acclaimed debut album, Desire Paths, two years later. That album was considered something of a modern liquid D&B classic, and this follow-up is similarly inclined. Musically expansive, emotionally rich and hugely enjoyable, it sees the duo fluctuate between hazy, ear-pleasing vocal cuts (Jinadu, Zara Kershaw, Lucy Kitchen and Maiday all feature), sweeping, semi-cinematic anthems, and dreamy, LTJ Bukem-championed dancefloor shufflers. Throughout, the rhythms remain skittish and punchy, and the chords more comfortable than a heavyweight duvet in the midst of a bleak midwinter.
