LVRS EP (12")
Cat: HZN 093. Rel: 22 Aug 16
  1. Wow (5:23)
  2. Down Time (4:50)
  3. LVRS (5:45)
Review: This one goes out to all you LVRS out there... Need For Mirrors returns to Horizons after his monumental 12" at the start of the year. Once again he's peddling nothing but the finest of well-chiselled grooves. "Wow" steps with the same ice, soul and space of a S.P.Y and Riya cut, all barbed and darkly beautiful. "Down Time" is a snake-like percussive roller that nods to the type of 11 minute epics Krust or Digital used to excel in as its chords gradually takeover the entire groove. Finally "LVRS" spins the minor key disco ball with jazzy house-like textures over a precision step. Classic.

The Space Between Remixes Vol 2

 in stock $10.20
Cat: CODER 010. Rel: 22 Aug 16
  1. On The Line (feat Collette Warren & Ben Soundscape - Random Movement remix) (4:30)
  2. Before You Go (feat Dylan Germick - Nymfo remix) (4:57)
  3. Everywhere We Go (feat Soultrain Locomotive - Jamal remix) (4:56)
Review: Remix alert: Bachelors of Science's third album, released last summer, enjoys a selection of carefully commissioned remixes. The perennial Random Movement starts the bus with another signature wriggler. Switching the groove to something wet and slinky, he leaves heaps of space for Collette Warren's distinctive, charismatic vocals to make the impact she intended. Next-up, flying Dutchman Nymfo takes "Before You Go" to deeper destinations, giving it more of a heads-down twist while Jamal does the flip to "Everywhere We Go"; once a sun-kissed skank gem, it's now a Dispatch-style cymbal-splashing croaker destined for the latest of hours.

  4. Gone Before Dawn (South Of Your Soul edit) (3:38)
  5. Better Than The Pain (6:25)
  6. Coz My Love Is (3:26)
Review: DBridge continues his consistently innovative vision with a whole stack of newness. We launch into his cosmos with the truly unique "Too Late", a deliciously slo-mo soul record that almost sounds like it's made to appear like it's on half speed. Pensive, gradual and measured with strings, lilting pianos and his own falsetto, it's total future soul complete with two equally forward-thinking remixes from staple label peers Stray and Spacek. Deeper again we hit "Gone Before Dawn" which steps, cautiously, with much more of a barbed tech aesthetic. We hit "Better Than The Pain", a languid sci-fi Heart Drive special and close with the woozy feels of "Coz My Love Is" a record that sounds like jazz, recorded underwater, somewhere near Detroit with Amp Fiddler. Beautiful.

The Axe (white marbled vinyl 12" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: PM 033. Rel: 22 Aug 16
  1. Gremlinz & Jesta - "The Axe" (6:26)
  2. Gremlinz - "White Dove" (5:26)
Review: Canadian minimalist Gremlinz returns to Paradox with two more lean, mean stepping machines. Teaming up with Jesta for "The Axe", it's an all-out drum frenzy as a classic step break is peppered with thundering hangdrum insistency and chilling pads. "White Dove", meanwhile, takes us back to the source with a wonderfully Headzy detuned synth refrain buried deep beneath a more rolling drum arrangement. Impressive.

Cat: PLEASURED 006. Rel: 22 Aug 16
  1. I'm Feeling Cold (5:43)
  2. Zerone (5:22)
  3. Evolvent (5:28)
  4. Simm-Pathy (5:45)
Review: What a time to be a DBridge fan... First his Cylon release ("Trinity Ville"), then Exit ("Too Late") now this Pleasure District 12". Here we find him traversing the 170 universe frontier teasing the D&B boundaries with extra-curricular elements. "I'm Feeling Cold" skips on a palpitating heartbeat drum as manipulated vocals breathe heavily with the woozy pads. "Zerone" casually swaggers to a mildly jazzy halfbeat while "Evolvent" takes us much deeper down the detuned rabbit hole with woozy, almost seasick effects. Finally, we hit "Simm-Pathy", the most club-focused cut of the pack with its rhythmic riff and slightly more traditional drum arrangement.

  12. Walk & Skank (unreleased 96 version) (6:04)
Review: While Joker Records never achieved the cult status of early drum & bass labels such as RAM, Philly Blunt and Urban Takeover, the imprint nevertheless played a crucial role in the development of the style. Here, a clutch of productions from label founders The Dream Team gets a 21st century makeover. There's naturally plenty of tried-and-tested floor fillers present, from the bouncy jump-up stylings of Voltage, Malachi and Papa G's rework of "Sweetie", and the duo's own unreleased "96 version" of sweaty, bass-heavy roller "The God Father", to the bombastic jungle breaks, speedy ragga vocals and pulverizing bass of "Stamina (Bladerunner Remix)". Arguably best of all, though, is the throbbing jungle revivalism of Dj Westy's rework of "Lighter".
