Nth Degree (12")
Cat: CNCSN 006. Rel: 14 Aug 17
  1. Allied - "Nth Degree" (5:20)
  2. Allied & Lockjaw - "Flow State" (5:32)
Review: Concussion continues to its underground operations with two grunting 3am rollers from Brighton's Allied. Fresh from their Methlab adventures last year, here we find them in a distinct Dispatch mood with a understated sandpaper funk feel running throughout the dark groove. Flip for "Flow State", a heavier, grizzlier piece of work with dubbed out synths, infectious shakers and a bed of subs so thick and heavy you could feed a family of 10 off them for three years. Proper.

Generator (12")
Cat: DMNSN 003. Rel: 14 Aug 17
  1. Generator (5:06)
  2. Beg & Borrow (4:53)
  3. >>>>_Error (4:45)
Review: While the world and their dog continues to drop his last hit "UK" in myriad creative mixes, Dimension follows it up with more peak time heavyweight massiveness; "Generator" is a big sing-along set-finale with a pumped-funk bassline while "Beg & Borrow" tips a nod at peers MTA mates Chase & Status with a stern spoken word vocal and a dangerous tech-edged drop. Then we have the special vinyl-only ">>>>_Error". What a twist to the tale... This can't be slept on.

OWC 001 (12")

  1. DJ Gaff - "Technology" (6:30)
  2. DJ Gaff & Cityspeak - "This Feeling" (6:07)
  3. DJ Gaff - "Dream Mechanics" (5:58)
  4. Cityspeak - "Skinjob" (6:25)
Review: MartianMan launches a brand new label Off-World Colonies and the mission statement is clear: to thrust as far and as deep into the cosmos with nothing but the power of breakbeats. To launch the label we have undercover agents DJ Gaff and Cityspeak who provide four timeless odysseys. "Technology" is all iced out and reminiscent of early Subtitles releases while "This Feeling" loosens up the drums again for a slinky space jam a la early Source Direct. "Dream Mechanics" is a much sharper, steppier flavour and "Skinjob" brings home the bacon at a cool 160. True to the craft.

Negative Space Remixed (marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: SMDE 006. Rel: 14 Aug 17
  1. Tidal Track (Homemade Weapons VIP) (5:50)
  2. Spasmolytic (Ancestral Voices remix) (5:19)
  3. Killing Moon (The Untouchables remix) (3:56)
  4. Echoes (Sam KDC remix) (5:40)
Review: Seattle producer Homemade Weapons has made quite an impact over the past 18 months. It was arguably debut album Negative Space that put him on the path to D&B superstardom, so it's fitting that his latest 12" features a quartet of fresh reworks of tracks from that set. He kicks things off with a thrillingly punchy, atmospheric and speaker-bothering re-make of "Tidal Track" - think 21st century Arabic jungle, and you're close - before Ancestral Voices delivers a suitably weird, dark and claustrophobic, experimental D&B interpretation of "Spasmolytic". Flip to the B-side and you'll find a humid, hot-steppin' remix of the feverish "Killing Moon" by The Untouchables - dense and tribal, but surprisingly spacious, too - as well as Sam KDC's dense, gloomy, techno-tinged rework of "Echoes".

RX0
Cat: RX 001. Rel: 14 Aug 17
  1. Kodama (7:52)
  2. Fluid Mechanics (3:54)
  3. Tiberium (6:03)
  4. Mantis (3:32)
Review: The bass maverick takes a break from both scoring for games and from being on Hospital Records with the launch of his own label RX0. As you'd expect, each of the four cuts are premium gear: "Kodama" is a cosmic frenzy of melodic layers and rapid organic drums, "Fluid Mechanics" is a brilliantly woozy, dreamy boombapper, "Tiberium" is a cruise in the late night fast lanes of Tokyo's neon highways while "Mantis" seals the deal with a mean 4x4 strutter that starts off all dusty and sweet before dropping into utter toxic bass thunder. What a way to launch your own label.
