Review: A brand new label from Deep Space operator Aural Imbalance (aka long-time contributor Simon Huxtable) Dedicated to the future-fringes that are often overlooked in the pursuit of something more instantly heavy-hurting, this launch release is the consummate mission statement: "Nine Tease" is straight of out of the Omni Trio book with its lavish hooky melody skipping over the space-aged beats, "Spiral Divide" continues the cosmic theme with a little more jazzy, loose-limbed drum magic while "Alpha Protocol" is an abyssal stepper soaked in dense atmospheres and twinkling hooks. More of this.

  3. Flat 8 (6:34)
  4. Version 2 (7:04)
Review: Who is this deep space stranger? Who are Folklore? What's in the water in Toulouse? Because the city is churning out some impeccable bass talents right now... And we suspect some of them are involved in this mysterious project. Each track tells a different tale in a subtly circular fashion; "Kingwise" shimmers into a light, breezy UKG-style two-step, "Untitled" cranks up on channel one with its low and slow dub techno mysticism while "Flat 8" leans back on an icy Alaska-style jungle roll-out. Finally "Version 2" takes us back over familiar chords but does so with a sublime dub beat and sense-blurring clipped synths. The music has all the answers.

Pathos EP (12" + insert)

  1. Pathos (6:17)
  2. Azimuth (5:21)
  3. Moonfunk (5:50)
  4. Outback (6:20)
Review: With an immaculate string of cosmic constructions on the likes of Rupture and 117 in the last year, it was only a matter of time before rising London beatsculpter Outer Heaven landed on the consistently-hurting UVB imprint. Both parties credentials speak volumes, as do the beats: the continuous cycles and twists of the title track, the cavernous room for thought on "Azimuth", the sludgier roller damage of "Moonfunk" and the classic foundation breaks on "Outback". Even the title is spot on... If "Pathos" doesn't appeal to your emotions you're one stone cold cookie.

Review: Austrian twosome Camo & Krooked have become genuine drum & bass heavyweights since making their debut back in 2006, thanks in no small part to a string of well-received albums on Hospital Records. Now residing on the similarly established Ram Records, the duo regards Mosaik as their most intricate, well-produced and musically expansive body of work to date. It's hard to argue with this assessment. Weighing in at 13 tracks deep and chock full of collaborations with guest vocalists and fellow producers, the tracks not only fizz with their usual colourful synths and punchy, minimalist D&B rhythms, but also the simmering beauty of sweeping orchestration, the familiar jangle of acoustic guitars, and all manner of ear-pleasing flourishes. DJs will be happy to hear that they've not left the dancefloor behind, with all but a handful of the tracks being primed for club play.

  15. Brighter Days (feat Charlotte Haining)
Review: Liquid drum and bass heroes Hybrid Minds (AKA producers Matt Lowe, Josh White and Jeff Crake) impressed with their 2013 debut album, Mountains, so hopes are naturally high for this delayed follow-up. If anything, Elements is arguably even better than its predecessor. While largely underpinned by punchy, club-ready D&B rhythms, the album's 15 tracks are marked out by the trio's impeccable use of both acoustic and electronic instrumentation, as well as soaring orchestration and, on occasions, atmospheric field recordings. To add a healthy dose of soul, the vast majority of the tracks are vocal affairs, with the likes of Grimm, Rocky Nti and Linguistics and Charlie P - who contribute two two-step/acoustic soul fusion "Home" - all swinging by to lend a hand.
