  1. Standard Affair (4:48)
  2. Legion Of Boom (3:55)
  3. Morro (dub) (4:26)
  4. Dr Know (4:55)
Review: Addison Groove is always a great reminder that's it's not always DJ Rashad (RIP) and RP Boo that you need to look up for footwork. Hooking up with DJ Die on his Gutterfunk label the two chalk up four bangers, though some melodic moments are there to be found on B2 cut "Dr Know" which at some points almost sounds like a friendly throw back to classic DJ Marky. "Standard Affair" is frenetic but punctuated by snare-heavy break downs and 808 percussive bleeps. Indiana Jones referencing "Legion Of Boom" ups the tempo and funk with the most liquid cut on the EP while undoubtedly the biggest, baddest production here is the cut up vocals, spastic percussion, gun clacks and deep Rhodes of "Morro".

  2. Need For Mirrors & Concord Dawn - "Willow Grain" (5:38)
Review: Fokuz are cooking up some absolute gold this year and this v/a 12" is certainly no exception. Austrian duo Air K & Cephei take the vocals from Shakedown's classic house anthem "At Night" and lay them gracefully over a turbo-liquid arrangement that bears rushes on every fill and section. Flip for Need For Mirrors & Concord Dawn's restrained, spacious stepper "Willow Grain". One of many seriously on-point co-lab pieces the two acts have delivered this year. Don't sleep.

  2. Fluid (4:29)
  3. Cataract (6:16)
  4. Cheremushki Groove (The Cyclist remix) (6:53)
Review: Having lurked in the tape scene for many moons, AL-90 brings his dishevelled house sound to the dancefloor with this single for Tape Throb. Despite the name of the label, this is in fact destined for vinyl, and leads with the fuzzy yet funky "Cheremushki Groove", assisted in the process by Monokle. There's a whiff of Gerry Read's dusty production values present on "Fluid", but AL-90 seems locked into a more discernible beat. That changes on "Cataract" with its degraded hardcore breaks drowning under a sea of unforgiving processing, while Tape Throb label boss The Cyclist is an appropriate choice of remixer to finish the record with a crunchy yet focused version of "Cheremushki Groove".

Cat: WARM 039. Rel: 29 Feb 16
  1. Sesi Mirage (6:47)
  2. Nairah (6:04)
Review: The legendary breaksmith Paradox does the split personality thing once again as he teams up with his inner deep head Alaska for two timeless slappers on Warm Comms. The result, as standard, is beautiful and deservedly longer than most current D&B cuts: "Sesi Mirage" is straight out of the Goodlooking playbook, all cosmic washes and a big yearning vocal sample over sweet skippy, constantly evolving breaks. "Nairah" is a touch more direct as our focus is squared on the drumwork before a subtle stab and lilting synths gradually come to fore. Proof, once again, that Paradox remains one of the most consistent and prolific producers out there.

Trunk (12")
Cat: PLV 070. Rel: 06 Mar 17
  1. Trunk (feat MC Coppa) (5:00)
  2. No Escape (feat Nitri) (5:16)
Review: Level 2 and DJ Chap continue to demolish the dance with their currently-spotless Alibi project; "Trunk" is a conga-weaving roller with all the hallmark ingredients of a timeless classic heads-down roller; tight percussion, creeping basses and subtle bars from Coppa, everything about it is deep, dark and dangerous. "No Escape", featuring fellow Sao Paulo artist Nitri, is more of a late night fast lane stepper. Laced with techy textures but driven by a precision groove break and heaps of space, it's a smack back to the darker sounds of the early 2000s before everything went hyper. Extremely well played.

Cat: AMENIZER 002. Rel: 20 Feb 17
  1. A (6:53)
  2. B (7:16)
  3. C (6:55)
Review: When Foundation X launched the mysterious Amenizer series last summer, it was designed as an outlet for retro-futurist jungle rinse-outs built around the infamous "Amen" breakbeat. Like the series first 12", this second volume boasts untitled, un-credited tracks that are rumoured to be the work of some well-known D&B big hitters. "A" doffs a cap to the bass-heavy UK styles that came before jungle - namely bleep and hardcore - via brilliantly cut-up Amen breaks, alien melody lines, surging sub-bass and cheeky vinyl rewinds. "B" is a slightly deeper, dub-tinged junglist roller, while "C" delves into the world of early ragga jungle to devastating effect. It's an unashamed blast from the past, but there's nothing wrong with that.

Cat: HZN 064. Rel: 27 Mar 17
  1. Bumbaclart (5:58)
  2. Dilate (5:27)
Review: James Evans and Andy Tweedale have not donned the Amoss moniker for a while, with their last EP dropping two years ago. Horizon Music has decided to offer a reminder of their skills by reissuing 2013 single Bumberclaart on burgundy coloured vinyl. The two-tracker remains arguably the duo's best moment. The title track is particularly potent, featuring as it does a punchy combination of druggy, pitched-down rave noises, ricocheting, dub-influenced electronics, rumbling sub-bass, and D&B drum beats that hit home harder than a punch to the guts from Anthony Joshua. Flipside "Dilate" is dark, trippy and tech-tinged; while rock solid and floor-friendly, it lacks the sheer weight of the impeccable A-side.

Cat: RAMM 212 . Rel: 25 Apr 16
  1. New Era (4:33)
  2. New Era (VIP mix) (4:34)
Review: The start of what many fans are hoping will eventually be an album later this year, Andy C let rip into 2016 with a brand new jump-up party track that smacks of "Twist 'Em Out" era jump up mischief (before things got a little too silly on that side of the genre). Now finally enjoying a vinyl outing, its ballsy sub matches the spiky riff with a dynamic that was seemingly written with wax in mind. The VIP is an interesting approach too; rather than being wilder than the original, it's actually deeper and more heads-down. Classic Andy C subversion... Let's hope it does build to an album.

Review: His first full body of work since 2015's breath-taking album Perspectives, Anile returns to the top of the class with an A* quartet of smouldering workouts. "Your Way" tips a wry nod at Logistics' early work with its tubular bassline and hazy arpeggio, "Wish List" is all about the loose, relaxed drum groove while "Allergens" stacks up on some beautifully chewy reese gluten while "Velvet Glove" will flatten you with bass before picking you up with delicate soul pianos... Before flattening you again. Anile is in a league of his own.

  3. Justify (feat Terri Walker) (4:12)
Review: Five years have passed since Artificial Intelligence last gave the world an album. The world of drum & bass has changed vastly since then, but they continue to plough their timeless path uncompromisingly. Like the first sampler, this EP features some very well selected guests (Terri Walker who has worked extensively with Spectrasoul and Swindle and the anonymous Dawn Wall) but the real stars are Zulu and Glenn. "Is This Real" is a purring double bass glider a la Full Cycle, "Scrolls" is a majestic diva-peppered dreamer (think early High Contrast or Logistics) "Justify" is a big old soul shock-out that's up there with their modern-classic "You Can Dream". Album hype doesn't get more beautiful than this.

  2. Asymmetric - "Quarantine" (7:15)
  3. Asymmetric + Limit - "Transzendental" (7:49)
  4. Asymmetric + Limit - "Jazz Is..." (6:35)
Review: Limit and Asymmetric are in fact both the work of St. Petersburg-based producer Evgeniy Sergeev, who has been building up a library of contemporary D&B productions digitally and now makes the leap to vinyl with some of the strongest of his productions to date. "Stormy" is aptly titled as it rips with ferocity through mangled breaks, rave stabs and hoovers aplenty and "Quarantine" is a quintessential darkside jam with more of that tricksy drum programming. The B-side offers a little more respite with the sunkissed tones of "Transzendental" and the soulful yet ruff mood of "Jazz Is..." making a smart counterpoint to the heavier A side.

  1. From Dusk Till Dawn (feat Daddy Freddy) (6:13)
  2. From Dusk Till Dawn (feat Daddy Freddy - TMSV remix) (5:20)
Review: Three years on from his last appearance on wax, Guido van der Brink dusts down the Atiq aliases and returns with something suitably heavy: a club-ready D&B smasher featuring the syllable-a-nanosecond rap of soundsystem culture legend Daddy Freddy. Van der Brink's original version, a weighty fusion of bustling breakbeats, ten-ton sub-bass, moody electronics and echo-laden reggae style stabs, can be found on the A-side, with TMSV handling remix duties on the flip. It's a sizeable rework built around a seriously sustained sub-bass assault and beats that sit somewhere in between Exit style experimental D&B and weighty dubstep.

  3. Everywhere We Go (feat Soultrain Locomotive - Jamal remix) (4:56)
Review: Remix alert: Bachelors of Science's third album, released last summer, enjoys a selection of carefully commissioned remixes. The perennial Random Movement starts the bus with another signature wriggler. Switching the groove to something wet and slinky, he leaves heaps of space for Collette Warren's distinctive, charismatic vocals to make the impact she intended. Next-up, flying Dutchman Nymfo takes "Before You Go" to deeper destinations, giving it more of a heads-down twist while Jamal does the flip to "Everywhere We Go"; once a sun-kissed skank gem, it's now a Dispatch-style cymbal-splashing croaker destined for the latest of hours.

  4. Control (Insiders remix) (5:39)
Review: The third remix collection to come from their fourth soul-bounty album The Space Between, US trio Bachelors Of Science continue to invite fresh reinterpretations. Bladerunner hones in on the natural skank of "Backfoot Dub" and give it his own dark rub, Jaybee & Dave Owen get dreamy on "Cartier" while Flaco subverts the soul on "Don't Hold Back" with a collection of smooth, timeless pad tones. Finally, for a darker finale, Insiders give "Control" a shiny new coat of tech armour. Bulletproof.

Review: California roller merchants BoS delivered one of 2015's finest D&B albums in the form of The Space Between. Now, as the LP dust begins to settle on the ever-developing D&B landscape, they've recruited some equally talented acts for a series of remixes.... Bcee & Villem twist up the bass and polish the strings on "Satisfy", Quadrant, meanwhile, adds a whole new level of dark drama to the deep dream dynamics of "Kanto" while Method One breaks down the album title track and rebuilds it somewhere off the second sun of Kepler-1647. Dive deep.

With Tokyo Prose, Klute, Pola & Bryson and GLXY on board, the emphasis really is on the word 'essential'. 2. Syncopy (Blawan's Tragt Mechanik mix)
Review: Fledgling Danish label Teal continue their mission statement to release interesting music regardless of genre. Their third release sees them turn to fellow Copenhagen resident Tobias Pedersen, who operates under the mysterious Beastie Respond moniker. "Syncopy" will draw obvious comparisons with Non Plus figureheads Instra:mental for its clear deviations into the slower, deep, mind altering end of the drum and bass spectrum. Amidst the sparse, crackling array of percussive rhythms and devious industrial textures there's a dubby warmth to the swing that adds a unique touch, whilst the overall tone sits just the right side of melancholia. Further kudos is awarded to Teal for enlisting Blawan to remix the track, with the R&S/Hessle lynchpin naturally embellishing proceedings with his own devious array of layered drum sounds whilst dragging the source material down a decidedly darker sonic corridor. Big tip!

Review: Marking five years since Bad Taste snapped the singular skills of Sarajevo scientist Billain, Bad Taste recruit four acts to make history and become the first people to remix Billain. No mean feat, but all acts deliver... "Manifold" gets the treatment from Neonlight and Malux. The former get creative with the metallic riff while Malux bull-charges with layers on layers of energy. "Batbots", meanwhile, goes under the knives of Mindscape and Pythius. Here the former really puts us through our paces with relentless drums and full use of the heavy-rev horsepower bassline and the latter adds more of his own characteristic Dutch drama. Each act making sure Billain's first ever remix go down in history, this release is nothing short of momentous.

Review: A special vinyl-only remix couplet from Critical's bashment professor Sam Binga. First-up the ever-sharp Sully jungles the dickens out of the Warrior Queen-front "Wasted Days", adding a whole hurricane of energy through the crafty edited breaks and cool sense unpredictability. Flip for a trip to Livity Sounds circa 2013 where Pev & Kowton laid down a delicate synth jam and Sam craftily brings it up to around 160, adds a few fluttering twists but loses none of its crystalline soul. Grab this while you can.

Review: What can we say about Break that hasn't already been said? This man is D&B mythology - every producer name checks, every DJ represents, every soldier on the dancefloor knows that Break equals neck-snapping quality of the highest order. Both tunes on this release are, it goes without saying, superb, but both come from different dark places. "Groove With it" is the stepper you want, "Soldier" is the heavy, bottomed-out, snare-flailing danger zone you need. Drum and bass for the connoisseur who still likes to get messed up when it suits. Beautiful.

Review: Destination Bristol: D&B motherland and home to more junglists-per-capita than any other city on the planet including relative newcomers A R. Headed by Exposure the forward-thinking label strike more barbed soul gold on their third release. Break takes the lead with a white knuckle spacefunk of "Solvent". Almost taking a classic early 2000s neuro tone, it's Break in a playful space race type of mood. Flip for some silky vocal soul from Exposure as the dulcet feels of Mark Douglas wrap neatly over dreamy pianos and pads. No regrets.

  1. Break & Kyo - "Give In To Me" (5:18)
  2. Break - "Who Got Da Funk" (4:57)
Review: 10 years of Symmetry - 10 years of Break being an absolute boss. Respected by all sides of the game, his on-point balance of a funk and true grit has united us for over a decade and he's about to drop a brand new full-lengther of his own productions and remixes to celebrate. The two cuts showcase his range and skillish charm perfectly: "Give In To Me" features long-term collaborator Kyo who gives her most powerful soulful vocal over classic Break organs and a heavily swung beat. "Who Got Da Funk" is much sharper and grizzlier with its wasp nest bassline and punctuated two-step. Both prime us for the imminent album.

Cat: SYMMLP 004S1. Rel: 03 Aug 15
  1. Break & Kyo - "Simpler Times" (5:01)
  2. Break - "Top Shooter" (6:02)
Review: Five years have passed since Bristol-based beat-chiseller Break last dropped the A-bomb. The whole scene has changed hugely since then, but with his new LP Break is preparing to take us back to the days when only the groove (and some perfectly processed snares) mattered: The Kyo-fronted "Simpler Times" is a barbed soul roller with just the right amount of roughage while "Top Shooter" is a straight up slapper with deep rumbling subs and Break's gritty rhythm signature. Bring on the album!

  1. Treading Water
  2. Treading Water (VIP)
Review: Show stopping awesomeness from the criminally under-prolific Breakage: "Treading Water" is very reminiscent of La Roux's "Going In For The Kill"... Powerful chords, minimal dynamics and an emphatic vocal that seeps genuine sentiment, it's strong enough to get the biggest non-smokers in the dance raising lighters they didn't even know they had. For added guts flip for Breakage's very own VIP. Old school breakbeats a-go-go; this will slice a roof clean off any venue on the planet. Massive.

  1. Sound Killer (Ed Solo remix) (4:31)
  2. Sound Killer (Ed Solo remix instrumental) (4:29)
Review: Taken from his Roots Garden-released album earlier this summer - All A We - Brother Culture teams up with Jungle Cakes bossman Ed Solo for a storming, skank-flexed junglist shock out. Where the original was all warm and deeply textured, Solo has flipped the dynamics for something a lot sharper and harder hitting. Saturated in sunshine stabs with really nice attention to paid on the backing vocal harmonies, it's yet another skank-scud. Killer!

  1. Exodus (The Lion Awakes) (Special Request remix) (5:54)
  2. Exodus (The Lion Awakes) (DJ Die & Addison Groove remix) (6:09)
Review: The lion has awoken... 25 years after its original rave-blazing release "Exodus" gets a timely rewind. Following the first part which featured professor choppage himself Luke Vibert, Sneakers Social Club invite more dons to the fold: Special Request blows the speakers off with a rewind-loaded switch session that follows a path of its own while Bristol heads Die and Addison Groove get busy on the rave breaks. Both crucial updates on a seminal classic.
