Atlantic (12")
Cat: ELM 001V. Rel: 20 Jun 16
  1. A Sides - "Atlantic" (5:26)
  2. Will Miles - "Bass God" (5:17)
Review: American drum & bass is thriving right now and Elm Imprint is right in the eye of the storm with its monthly dispatches. This is the first time they've split artist duties across a 12" and it works a treat... Side A is all about A Sides with brash cymbal-splashing jungle roller while side B is all about the unstoppable Will Miles who pays homage to the 97-era techstep with brittle two-steps, gnarly bass plunges and a classic spoken sample. On-point.

  1. Standard Affair (4:48)
  2. Legion Of Boom (3:55)
  3. Morro (dub) (4:26)
  4. Dr Know (4:55)
Review: Addison Groove is always a great reminder that's it's not always DJ Rashad (RIP) and RP Boo that you need to look up for footwork. Hooking up with DJ Die on his Gutterfunk label the two chalk up four bangers, though some melodic moments are there to be found on B2 cut "Dr Know" which at some points almost sounds like a friendly throw back to classic DJ Marky. "Standard Affair" is frenetic but punctuated by snare-heavy break downs and 808 percussive bleeps. Indiana Jones referencing "Legion Of Boom" ups the tempo and funk with the most liquid cut on the EP while undoubtedly the biggest, baddest production here is the cut up vocals, spastic percussion, gun clacks and deep Rhodes of "Morro".

  3. Ghetto Chemistry (feat Lystone) (4:50)
  4. Just A Moment (5:49)
Review: Following his debut on CIA in autumn 2015, US artist Adred continues to show the breadth of sonic span and abilities on the equally respected Soul:R on their so-far-spotless "Fourfit" series. Each cut showing balancing restraint and weight with a strong emphasis on jazzy textures and tones, we're sideswiped by Manos's vocals and the strong "Oblique" feels of "Around The Sun", we're soothed with equal measures of nostalgia and synthetic soul on the Goodlookingesque "170 Untitled" before getting deep, dark and minimal on "Ghetto Chemistry" where Lystone adds a unique US hip-hop feel. Finally we walk the plank into Adred's deepest, oceanic cut to date where the waves are high, voluptuous and all consuming. Stunning.

Review: Fokuz are cooking up some absolute gold this year and this v/a 12" is certainly no exception. Austrian duo Air K & Cephei take the vocals from Shakedown's classic house anthem "At Night" and lay them gracefully over a turbo-liquid arrangement that bears rushes on every fill and section. Flip for Need For Mirrors & Concord Dawn's restrained, spacious stepper "Willow Grain". One of many seriously on-point co-lab pieces the two acts have delivered this year. Don't sleep.

  1. Obscurity (5:35)
  2. Godspeed (5:25)
Review: The increasingly unavoidable Methlab collective establish another brand new label: BNKR is inspired by the a/v conceptual events Methlab have held around the world where the emphasis is squared on the immersive aspect of tech D&B. Launching with Mindtech affiliate Allied, you could get much more immersive if you tried: "Obscurity" is an ice-cold sheet metal stepper where hurricane bass offers warning shots but remains restrained throughout. On the B "Godspeed" changes the drum technique a much sharper punctuation while mean subs wheeze beneath the rhythm and a well-oiled alien bassline. A very impressive launch release.

Review: His first full body of work since 2015's breath-taking album Perspectives, Anile returns to the top of the class with an A* quartet of smouldering workouts. "Your Way" tips a wry nod at Logistics' early work with its tubular bassline and hazy arpeggio, "Wish List" is all about the loose, relaxed drum groove while "Allergens" stacks up on some beautifully chewy reese gluten while "Velvet Glove" will flatten you with bass before picking you up with delicate soul pianos... Before flattening you again. Anile is in a league of his own.

Review: Sun & Bass chief ARPXP doesn't release anywhere near as much as he should. But when he does... Oh boy. "Fade Away" is Call To Mind era Commix style track - Fava provides the soul but it's pinned by icy and chiselled precision production. "Fifth Step" is jazz in its nature as the linger pianos roam with a hazy looseness. "Dancers Of The Stars" tips a wry nod to Doc Scott with its Beltram bass thrusting with mid 90s edge. Finally, "Endless Summer". Check its breezy evocative textures and the name will make complete sense. Balmy army.

Review: Peeping over the precipice of their second album, AI tease us with two unruly mood-setters. "Pass The Buck" features D&B's most consistent MC voice DRS who delivers in style over a stark understated bass tear that rips only when needed. Flip for an exclusive sampler-only collab with the ever-impressive SCAR: here the bass is anything but understated as it churns and groans and grizzles with twisted creativity. Two sure signs the album is going to be important when it drops later this month.

Review: Wrapping up another vintage year, Integral bossmen Artificial Intelligence return from their Metalheadz missions with three stunning reminders of their abilities: the way the strings ease in from behind and take you by surprise on "Nobody", the warm-but-deadly reese funk on "Definition", and the thundering power soul signature that caught our attention right back in the day on "Dreams Of Freedom". 2. Before You Go (feat Dylan Germick - Nymfo remix) (4:57)
  3. Everywhere We Go (feat Soultrain Locomotive - Jamal remix) (4:56)
Review: Remix alert: Bachelors of Science's third album, released last summer, enjoys a selection of carefully commissioned remixes. The perennial Random Movement starts the bus with another signature wriggler. Switching the groove to something wet and slinky, he leaves heaps of space for Collette Warren's distinctive, charismatic vocals to make the impact she intended. Next-up, flying Dutchman Nymfo takes "Before You Go" to deeper destinations, giving it more of a heads-down twist while Jamal does the flip to "Everywhere We Go"; once a sun-kissed skank gem, it's now a Dispatch-style cymbal-splashing croaker destined for the latest of hours.

  4. Control (Insiders remix) (5:39)
Review: The third remix collection to come from their fourth soul-bounty album The Space Between, US trio Bachelors Of Science continue to invite fresh reinterpretations. Bladerunner hones in on the natural skank of "Backfoot Dub" and give it his own dark rub, Jaybee & Dave Owen get dreamy on "Cartier" while Flaco subverts the soul on "Don't Hold Back" with a collection of smooth, timeless pad tones. Finally, for a darker finale, Insiders give "Control" a shiny new coat of tech armour. Bulletproof.

Review: California roller merchants BoS delivered one of 2015's finest D&B albums in the form of The Space Between. Now, as the LP dust begins to settle on the ever-developing D&B landscape, they've recruited some equally talented acts for a series of remixes.... Bcee & Villem twist up the bass and polish the strings on "Satisfy", Quadrant, meanwhile, adds a whole new level of dark drama to the deep dream dynamics of "Kanto" while Method One breaks down the album title track and rebuilds it somewhere off the second sun of Kepler-1647. Dive deep.

  2. 4 Days
Review: Following the massively successful re-release of "The Nine" earlier this year, Vegas explores the BCUK vaults once again for more formative fire-ups from one of the UK's most influential and revered drum & bass outfits. Released in 1999, "The Fear" EP set the foundations for their agenda-setting debut album Digital Nation. "The Fear" wears its jungle influences on its sleeve with passion. Icy pads and deep space echoes before the paranoid drop, it sums up the sound of the entire 90s taking in both Detroit, Berlin and London as it does so. "4 Days" is more direct and aggressive thanks to its relentless bassline that scuffs up and down the spectrum with chainsaw menace. Both have stood the test of time with low-end immaculation.

With Tokyo Prose, Klute, Pola & Bryson and GLXY on board, the emphasis really is on the word 'essential'. Highlights include P&B's synth shake-up on "Sun Goes Down" and the rampant drum splashes and added dark nuances on the album's title track. Comely.

  2. Syncopy (Blawan's Tragt Mechanik mix)
Review: Fledgling Danish label Teal continue their mission statement to release interesting music regardless of genre. Their third release sees them turn to fellow Copenhagen resident Tobias Pedersen, who operates under the mysterious Beastie Respond moniker. "Syncopy" will draw obvious comparisons with Non Plus figureheads Instra:mental for its clear deviations into the slower, deep, mind altering end of the drum and bass spectrum. Amidst the sparse, crackling array of percussive rhythms and devious industrial textures there's a dubby warmth to the swing that adds a unique touch, whilst the overall tone sits just the right side of melancholia. Further kudos is awarded to Teal for enlisting Blawan to remix the track, with the R&S/Hessle lynchpin naturally embellishing proceedings with his own devious array of layered drum sounds whilst dragging the source material down a decidedly darker sonic corridor. Big tip!

Review: Five men on a violent mission: Dutch trio Black Sun Empire and New Zealand duo State Of Mind have been collaborating since 2008 with consistently huge results. Following last year's "Until The World Ends" comes another quartet of hurters; The Audio-on-steroids "Thug" was the first to be unleashed earlier this year to rapturous response. It's now joined by the equally gnarly "Pull The Trigger", the Tiki-fronted punk-like "Skin Crawler" and the metallic techno odyssey "Kill That Noise". Violence never sounded so good.

  2. Broken (Paradox remix) (6:50)
Review: Blocks and Escher's Narratives Music label has been building a fearsome reputation over the last few years, in part due to the duo's willingness to embrace the experimental end of D&B, whilst retaining a clear dancefloor focus. This 12" sees them delve into their archives, offering up previously unheard versions of the two tracks that made up the label's debut release way back in 2012. First up is the moody and deliciously atmospheric "Sagan VIP", where cinematic textures and alien electronics rub shoulders with off-kilter, post-jungle rhythms and throbbing sub-bass. On the flip, Reinforced Records veteran Paradox gives "Broken" the once over, brilliantly melding bombastic old school jungle rhythms with fluid chords and darting synthesizer melody lines.

Review: Released four years ago - ages before the current halftime paradigm shift D&B is enjoying right now - Blocks & Escher's beautiful autonomically minded slice of raw cinematica is updated by the perennially on-point fusionist Om Unit. With his established penchant for the unchartered, he's the perfect fit and is able to retain all the synthetic melodic beauty of the original while throwing in a whole host of amen flurries and cosmicity. Stunning - just like the original.

Review: Break's long-awaited third album is getting closer and closer by the sampler. We don't need to the hype it; the word couplet of Break and album is self-hyping enough to all who know their D&B. We don't even need to hype these tracks; "Free Your Mind" opens with a lush "Love So True" style reggae refrain before dropping into free-flowing rolling gold topped by Fats instantly distinctive harmonies. "Brand New" opens with heavenly chords before dropping into a deliciously rough and angular groove. Classic Break, both of these kill it on all corners. Bring on the album!

Review: 10 years of Symmetry - 10 years of Break being an absolute boss. Respected by all sides of the game, his on-point balance of a funk and true grit has united us for over a decade and he's about to drop a brand new full-lengther of his own productions and remixes to celebrate. The two cuts showcase his range and skillish charm perfectly: "Give In To Me" features long-term collaborator Kyo who gives her most powerful soulful vocal over classic Break organs and a heavily swung beat. "Who Got Da Funk" is much sharper and grizzlier with its wasp nest bassline and punctuated two-step. Both prime us for the imminent album.

Review: Five years have passed since Bristol-based beat-chiseller Break last dropped the A-bomb. The whole scene has changed hugely since then, but with his new LP Break is preparing to take us back to the days when only the groove (and some perfectly processed snares) mattered: The Kyo-fronted "Simpler Times" is a barbed soul roller with just the right amount of roughage while "Top Shooter" is a straight up slapper with deep rumbling subs and Break's gritty rhythm signature. Review: Show stopping awesomeness from the criminally under-prolific Breakage: "Treading Water" is very reminiscent of La Roux's "Going In For The Kill"... Powerful chords, minimal dynamics and an emphatic vocal that seeps genuine sentiment, it's strong enough to get the biggest non-smokers in the dance raising lighters they didn't even know they had. For added guts flip for Breakage's very own VIP. Old school breakbeats a-go-go; this will slice a roof clean off any venue on the planet. Massive.

Where the original was all warm and deeply textured, Solo has flipped the dynamics for something a lot sharper and harder hitting. Saturated in sunshine stabs with really nice attention to paid on the backing vocal harmonies, it's yet another skank-scud. Killer!

Review: Lafayette, Louisiana, may not be particularly associated with the bowel-bothering sub-bass and ricocheting drum hits of dubstep. Nevertheless, it's home to Bukkha, a producer whose floor-friendly dubstep releases are shot through with high-grade dub reggae influences. "Ruling Sound", featuring the slick and soulful vocals of Junior Dread, is a perfect example. It's effectively a dubstep/steppers reggae fusion, and a very good one at that. The producer's love of original dub can be heard loud and clear on the accompanying "Ruling Dub", which beefs up the sub-bass whilst ramping up the reverb, delay and tape echo. The flipside TMSV Remix, which boasts crunchier, jungle-influenced breakbeats and even weightier sub-bass, is also pretty nifty.

Review: It's by Calibre and it has balls in the title... Does any more need to be said? Not really, but credit where it's due - no artist comes close in consistency, proliferation and out-and-out distinctive style than Calibre. Here he is in "Posh Boy" mode - all sizzling in the bass and hazy in the chords - "Iron Balls" is nasty but restrained, cruel but kind, furious but funk. "Angel Breach" takes us even deeper into Calibre's darker side with a ricochet drum set and bassline that ploughs deeper and deeper into the abyss. There's no mucking around here - just up dark style Calibre.
