Review: Last year, someone set up an online petition calling for Warp to re-release The Other People Place's brilliant Lifestyles Of The Laptop Cafe album on wax. Happily, Warp has responded to the strength of feeling from electronica fans - most of whom bristled at the high online prices for second hand copies - and re-pressed it. Drexciya man James Stinson's 2001 solo set remains a timeless electronic classic; a perfectly pitched and immaculately produced fusion of downtempo electro rhythms, spacey electronics and twinkling synthesizer melodies. In fact, you'll struggle to find a better electro album full stop, making this reissue an essential purchase for anyone not lucky enough to own an original copy.

Review: Pole Jam Vinyl - a wax-only collaboration between Satin Jackets' Glam Jam Artists and Welsh outfit Pole Position Recordings - is always a reliable source of club-ready nu-disco fare. There's naturally much to admire on the label's latest multi-artist EP. Pioneerball kicks things off with the cheery and musically expansive "Deltaplane" - all flailing slap bass, delay-laden hits, sparkling electronics and sharp strings - before Falqo steps up with a chunk of boogie-influenced blue-eyed soul (the deliciously positive "Across The Sea"). On the flip you'll find the pitched down, Balearic minded dub disco of Sasha Anastov's "Sea For Two", and the near horizontal soul smoothness of Gayana's "Since The Night (Klar&PF Mix)".

Review: Believe it or not, but Phil Mison's been churning out the killer new age-come-downtempo gear since '01, and that's not exactly something to be taken lightly. The producer has seen it all and done it all, and has no doubt been an inspiration to the plethora of artists making so-called 'balearic' beats these days. The name Cantoma is now synonymous with quality output, which can also be said for his personal label, Highwood Recordings. This latest EP, Talva Lumi, is an unadulterated beauty in every sense of the word, its subtle waves of euphoria kicking into motion with the suave, angelic Apiento mix of "Talva Lumi", followed by a more stripped-down instrumental. On the flip, "Just Landed" is remixed by Reverso 68, who drops a little bump of house magic onto the groove, and the soothing, boogie-friendly chiller that is "Top Banana". Gorgeous stuff.

  4. The Records We Never Made - "On A Whispered Way" (5:26)
Review: On this multi-artist bonanza, Aficionado owners Jason Boardman and Moonboots have decided to showcase contemporary talents from Manchester, in association with clothing brand Good Measure. Half Sink steps up first, gently unfurling the reverb-heavy guitar solos, booming bass and shuffling samba rhythms of "Tsukimi". King Clyde's loose, groovy and fuzzy "Request Line" is a bouncy disco-funk treat, while Dream Lovers' "For Belgian Friends" is an evocative chunk of meandering bliss. Arguably best of all, though, is "On A Whispered Way" by The Records We Never Made, a glistening, delay-heavy foray into cinematic, post-rock pastures. Clearly, Manchester's got (Balearic) talent.

Review: There was much excitement surrounding Granit Records' recent reissue of Claude Rodap's sole album, 1982's synthesizer-heavy fusion of traditional Martinique styles and (then) contemporary electronic music, Syn-Ka. Now Rush Hour is getting in on the act, issuing three more obscure Rodap productions - this time made around the turn of the Millennium - on vinyl for the first time. There's naturally plenty to enjoy, from the rainforest melodies, spacey synth-bass and gentle tropical rhythms of "Hiwa", to the glistening, guitar-laden Caribbean Balerica of closer "Zouklove". The track that sits in between, the denser, jazzier, solo heavy "Paco", is also superb.

Review: Motor City Drum Ensemble and Marcus Worgull's Vermont project returns to Kompakt with another elegant beatless adventure. Once again reminding us how ambient music can still carry a real tune and narrative, highlights include the clipped cascade of chimes of "Dschuna", the sudden flurries of light on "Demut", momentous overlapping guitar arpeggio of "Ufer" and warped layers and washes on "Hallo Von Der Anderen Seite". Rich in warmth and loaded with hidden twists on every listen, it's the ultimate foil to their better-known clubbier motifs. Beautiful.

Review: Late last year, previously unheard outfit Bongo Entp released a digital-only debut album via Kenneth Bager's Balearic-minded Music For Dreams EP. Here, they make their first appearance on wax via a set that showcases both tracks from that samba-soaked set, and a string of new remixes. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the heady, Azymuth-influenced samba-goes-jazz-funk shuffle of opener "Foto Felita Do Avaio" and synth heavy, dub-flecked warmth of "El Rey Do Pollo", to the near ambient, slo-mo dreaminess of "Lujon". Carrot Green turns that latter track into a mid tempo Balearic house shuffler, while Selvagem contributes a jaunty, dub-house interpretation of "Foto Filita Do Avaio" that's arguably the EP's finest moment.

Review: Thanks to the hard-to-define nature of the Balearic sound that inspired it, Aficionado Recordings can pretty much release whatever they like - providing, of course, that it fits their hazy, horizontal and loved-up ethos. It's also why they can release this surprise EP from Welsh "super-group" Bendith, whose five tracks explore the more pastoral, string-drenched end of the folk spectrum. Via a range of tracks built around acoustic guitar motifs, lilting strings, twinkling piano lines and Welsh-language vocals, Bendith deliver an EP as breezy and beautiful as anything Aficionado has released to date. It's undeniably traditional in feel - there's not a synthesizer or drum machine in sight - but that only adds to its alluring nature.

Review: Gop Tun are a Brazilian label and party crew operating out of Sao Paulo, and they stride into their third release with a pair of tracks that are likely to establish them on the map even more than they are already. This is the second outing for Hatchets on the label, and "Hey Benji" makes for a perfect encapsulation of the Gop Tun sound with its warm, organic sound palette, slinky disco structure and traditional Latin elements. Prins Thomas meanwhile pushes the track into a whole other realm for his remix, creating a hard-edged, heavy-grooving remix that promises all kinds of psychedelic abandon on the dancefloor.

Review: Sydney label Efficient Space unearths another forgotten classic from the Australian underground. This time in the form of Melbourne synth enthusiast Braden Schlager who produced this record back in 1990 and is considered by some to be the first deep house record to come from Down Under. On the first side are two versions of "Morning" the first "Du Heame Mix" features vocals and is definitely a soulful, tripped out affair. The "Rummage Mix" equally as emotive but more melodic and with some nice floating pads for extra effect. On the flip is "Rummage" on more of an experimental techno tip; dark, booming and crunchy, sounding kind of like LFO. Finally Schlager offers a new track with "King Of Comedy" getting on a smooth and summery balearic vibe.

Review: Given his impressive track record, hopes are naturally high for Bonobo's sixth album, Migration, which is his first full-length since 2013. Happily, it's a majestic affair, with the producer delivering another sumptuous set of tracks. It was partly inspired by an extended period musing on the nature of personal identity, and the role that nationality plays in that. This concept is translated via thoughtful lyrics, and songs that draw musical influence from the four corners of the globe. It's not a big stylistic leap, of course - his bread and butter remains yearning, emotion-rich downtempo music built around gently jazzy grooves and impeccable live instrumentation - but given that few artists do it better than Bonobo, we'll forgive him for that.

Review: 2017 marks two decades since the release of Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber's first album under the Tosca alias, the undeniably baked Opera. Given their length of service, it's heartening to see that their desire to create evocative, dubbed-out music remains undimmed. There's plenty to enjoy on Going Going Going, their first studio set for three years. Check, for example, the swirling, late night stroll through Istanbul that is "Amber November", the dub-meets-jazz warmth of "Friday", the flowery piano lines and jangling acoustic guitars of "Supersunday", and the thrillingly trippy, krautrock-influenced ambient dub of "Olympia". It would be churlish to say that it's a return to form - they've always been reliable, after all - but it's certainly one of their more impressive full-length outings.

Review: Given Massive Attack's upbringing, it was almost inevitable that they'd release a dub overhaul of one of their albums at one point. That time came in 1995, when British sound system legend Mad Professor - responsible for some of the greatest UK-made dub records of all time - put his distinctive twist on Protection. 21 years on, the set still sounds sublime: a radical translation that frequently bares only a passing resemblance to the Bristol band's original. It's packed with highlights, from the spaced-out, dub-house rework of "Spying Glass" ("I Spy"), to the ricocheting percussion hits and twinkling pianos of "Weather Storm (Cool Monsoon)", and creepy, delay-laden string surges of "Eternal Feedback (Sly)".

Review: Ludovic Navarre aka St Germain requires no introduction, and the French house legend has literally seen and done it all ever since his first productions began to surface and influence other house artists back in the early 1990's golden era. The majority of his music has been released on F Communications, but his latest studio album drops on EMI's Parlophone sublabel. The self-titled St Germain is a proper LP, not a mere collection of house tracks put together helter-skelter. Inside, you'll hear many of Navarre's influences and inspirations, from Afro tribal melodies, to jazzy influences and even Middle-Eastern chimes. It's a house album in structure, but much more than that beneath the surface...as it always was from the legend of French dance music.

The Adelaide based luminary rehashes Toto's "Africa" in a heavily pitched down and simple edit fit for any fromage-laced discotheque. Skirting around the throbbing bassline and triangle hits of "My Body On Fire" is a vocal that will have some train-spotters pulling their hair out in frustration, while "Not In Love Anymore" will have both Warren G/Nate Dogg and Michael McDonald fans bumping and grinding to excess.

Review: Auntie Flo's Huntleys & Palmers residency in London has helped the artist to both mature his sound as a producer, and get his name across to a vast house audience looking for good vibes. And it's with these sorts of release that they've found it. The man is back but this time for the incorrigible Sofrito, who are branching out with this new Super Singles subsidiary imprint, mashing up contemporary dance with something veritably tropical. "The Soniferous Garden" is an excellent warm-up tune, or the sort of groove you stick on to send your audience left of field, thanks to its slow, chuggy groove, gorgeous instrumentation, and subtle Afro lyricism. "Rainfall On Red Earth" travels at a similar tempo, except that here the mood has grown more pensive, and Auntie Flo offers another stunning piece of music that is perfect for both dancing or straight-up vibing.

Review: Over a few short years, Tornado Wallace has gone from being a promising nu-disco producer, to one capable of creating brilliant Balearica. Lonely Planet is his debut album, and must rank as his finest work to date. The seven tracks are dreamy, trippy and atmospheric - we'd expect nothing less - and draw on a far wider palette of Balearic influences than we've heard on previous experiences. Coupled with a new-found desire to include more live instrumentation (particularly glistening, Peter Green style guitar passages, drums and exotic flutes), the result is an album that's as evocative, dreamy and humid as anything he's produced to date. In other words, it's a great album and comes highly recommended.

Review: They've taken us on some of the most transcendental mix-trips of recent years - from sunrise to sunset via cosmic forest and magic circles by way of their endless global dancefloor - assault no young act is digging as deep as Psychemagik. Or as a spiritually. Yet another case in point: Rituals. By far the duo's most extensive, majestically curated and organized trip to date. 40 tracks exploring the last 60 years of studio creations and vibe explorations, from the progressive synth odyssey of Vermoessen & Delo to the steel drum electro boogie of Gurvitz by way of the dense rainbow textures of Amini and cosmic synth struts of Le P'tite Fred, you get the feeling that Rituals is the mix experience Psychemagik have been working towards their whole career. Happy travels...

Review: By the time they headed into the studio to record Protection, Massive Attack were still riding high on the success of their peerless debut album, Blue Lines. While the resultant set, released in 1994, does quite hit the same dizzying heights, it remains a thoroughly great album. Of course, we all know the highlights by heart - the stoned bounce of "Karmacoma", evocative downtempo bliss of Tracey Thorn hook-up "Protection", string-drenched lusciousness of "Sly", and the gentle dub-house soul of the Horace Andy-voiced "Spying Glass", for example - but even the forgotten album cuts (see "Weather Storm" and "Better Things") have aged remarkably well. If you don't own a copy on vinyl already, you definitely should.

Review: Two of the UK's finest underground labels join forces and share their talent on this killer 12. From IIB we have Coyote's Sin Distracciounes, an upbeat sunkissed dancefloor meditation featuring the blissed out Flamenco guitar of long time collaborator Saro Tribastone. Futurboogie's Christophe remixes and chops up the guitar and adds some gypsymenesque organ stabs and layers of keys. Futureboogie's Felix Dickinson and Jamie Read drop the funky guitar heavy Restless People. Sublime chugging beats and a beautiful vocal refrain imploring 'Slow It Down' creating a laidback house monster. IIB's Max Essa puts his remix right in the middle of the dancefloor with straight up house vibes and extra percussion.

Review: Given the hype that surrounded the release of the first Moderat set back in 2009, we can surely expect more of the same for this second outing from Apparat and Modeselektor. Those familiar with the first album's woozy blend of IDM, Thom Yorke indebted vocal dreaminess, porchlight techno and post-dubstep rhythms will immediately feel right at home. Online reviews have focused largely on II's atmospheric warmth, and the way in which the Berlin-based trio seems to have refined their sound. Both are valid critiques; certainly, there's a maturity and musical complexity to the album that betters much of their previous works. It's not much of a dancefloor set, but that's entirely the point; this is locked-in headphone listening for the wide-eyed generation.

Review: You'll probably already be acquainted with the name Manuel Gottsching - and you should be - but just in case you aren't, he was a pillar of Ash Ra Tempel's golden years and, among other of his contemporaries, was a pioneer of the genre that is often dubbed 'new age'. E2-E4 was a 1984 solo album from the man, and is certainly up there with the likes of Steve Reich's best minimal material, although it has often gone relatively unnoticed. MG Art from Germany have done us the favour of reissuing this monumental release, and we're utterly awestruck by how contemporary and fresh this album still is. In fact, one could say that a tune like "31'38" is the basis for the sound championed by new labels like Mood Hut, where a significantly danceable beat is laid above placid, warm harmonics. Similarly, "23'00" is just as balearic and phased out but, once again, we just can't believe how great this music still sounds more than thirty years later. Warmly recommended.

Review: Since being introduced to a new generation of listeners via 2014's superb The Sleeping Beauties retrospective, veteran Grecian musician Vangelis Katsoulis has enjoyed something of a career revival. The man once dubbed Greece's "king of electronics" is in fine form on If Not Now When, his first new album since the turn of the decade. Musically, it inhabits a similar aural space to his acclaimed 1980s work - think new influenced melodies, complex neo-classical arrangements, Gigi Masin style chord progressions, and breathtaking beautiful instrumentation - and often feels cinematic in tone. There are occasional curveballs - see the minimalist ambient techno of "Grand Delusion" and pleasingly percussive, jazz-flecked "Tsake Take Tundrum" - but these merely emphasize the quality of Katsoulis's compositional skills.

Review: In the summer of 2016, HOVE went to France for two weeks to start writing and recording his new EP Portes du Soleil. Together with his girlfriend, they spent two weeks at Le Pascalet, a house in the woods of the Cevennes, right outside the small village of St. Etienne Vallee Francaise. Equipped with a sampler, drum machine, some synths, effect pedals and a mic for field recordings, he built the foundation of the four songs that would later become the EP. All the songs started out as live-jams but the goal was to create different moods and patterns inspired by the surroundings of the forest, long walks, playing petanque and plenty of Pastis. The tracks were later finalized back home at HOVE's studio in Zurich.

Review: Since first emerging at the tail end of the '90s, Simon Green has become downtempo music's most marketable star, appealing just as much to occasional listeners and 40-something housewives as underground heads. Throughout that time, he's carefully shifted his sound to take in current trends and musical developments, whilst retaining a certain picturesque aesthetic. This fifth full-length, his fourth for Ninja Tune, continues that trend. Amongst the usual shuffling beats and twinkling melodies you'll find garage-esque vocal cut-ups, rubbery dancefloor rhythms, Floating Points style neo-jazz, string-laden two-step and some seriously wonky soul featuring vocals from Erykah Badu.

Review: Three years on from the release of their eponymous debut album, Danilo Plessow (AKA Motor City Drum Ensemble) and Marcus Worgull once again join forces as Vermont. Like that acclaimed opus, II sees the duo exploring the worlds of ambient and electronica, along the way incorporating elements of 1970s kosmiche, and the kind of cyclical, minimalist compositions made famous by Steve Reich and Terry Riley. The results are uniformly excellent, with highlights including the Manuel Gottsching inspired "Nordeney", the Tangerine Dream style movements of "Gebirge", the Namlookian spaciousness of "Hallo Von Der Anderen Seite", and the hushed analogue creepiness of "Chemtrails".

Review: There's a reason that Massive Attack's Blue Lines frequently appears in "greatest albums" lists. To put it simply, it's brilliant, and arguably remains the Bristol-based outfit's finest work to date (though some would argue that the dark and paranoid Mezzanine is possibly better). As this weighty vinyl reissue proves, it's lost none of its hazy, dub-propelled trip-hop charm. All-time classics such as "Unfinished Sympathy", "Safe From Harm" and "Hymn of the Big Wheel" have lost none of their soulful, mood-enhancing brilliance, while lesser celebrated cuts such as "Five Man Army" and "Lately" still sound great despite their vintage.

Review: There are few record collectors and DJs with crates quite as deep as Psychemagik. They've already proved this beyond doubt via a trio of brilliant Magik compilations for Paul Murphy and Simon Purnell's Leng label. Magik Sunset Part 2 continues this run, gathering together another double-album's worth of fantastic obscurities from the worlds of stoner disco, left-of-centre rock, psychedelia and Balearica. As usual, there are some genuine "how did I not know about this record" moments, from the star-kissed Balearic jazz of Fabio Fabor and saucer-eyed white boy reggae-rock of the Trepidants, to the Flamenco-tinged AOR disco shuffle of Jack Adkins' "Sunset Beach".

Review: International Feel's recently launched mini album series continues, with long-serving downtempo producer CFCF delivering his vision of a lazy Balearic holiday. Sitting somewhere between Jose Padilla, Joan Bibiloni, and Gigi Masin's collaborations with Templehof, the extended player's eight tracks bristle with authentic live instrumentation, most notably jazzy guitars, soft-focus acoustics, reflective pianos and humid accordions. These are effortlessly blended with subtle electronics to create sun-kissed, early morning mood pieces that undoubtedly define the Balearic, after-hours experience. What's most striking about On Vacation, though, is just how beautiful it is. At times, it's breathtakingly stunning.

Review: Cottam's Ruff Draft label makes a logical move and turns to a long-serving champion of gritty, soul-powered house jams from the tough side. DJ Nature may have made his name many moons ago, but he proves to be as relevant as ever on this killer two-track release. "Alfred" is a tightly wound box jam that manages to maintain tension throughout without needing to pander to the release part of the process, sounding all the more exciting for it. "Blood On Your Hands" meanwhile finds Nature heading into the scuffed, soul-sampling territory he's most at home in, and the ensuing rumble of off-key funk is impossible to refute.

The A-side Sabu Dance combines Horns, Flutes & Percussion on this killer slice of midtempo funk from Africa via Berlin. This has been thoroughly road tested by Soft Rocks at their Kinfolk night & never fails to get a great response from the dancefloor. On the B-side is not the tantric one's ode to voyeurism but a rare as hens teeth slice of UK. reggae at its finest. Adjustments have been made sensitively and sounds have been chosen to carefully match those from the appropriate era. A perfect track for blissful summer evenings.

From the proto throb of "Fantasy" to the crafty breaks on "Pris", this is a record steeped in a classy execution and knowing reference points without ever sounding derivative. Review: Originally issued back in 1998, Mezzanine remains the most commercially successful album released by Bristol troupe Massive Attack, thanks in no small part to the Liz Fraser-featuring "Teardrop". This third album signalled a change in sonic direction that played more explicitly on the darkness and tension that was always an undercurrent of their much loved debut Blue Lines and successor Protection. After numerous bootlegs over the years, Virgin have done the right thing and presented this official reissue of Mezzanine to appease fans of Massive Attack and it's clear the LP has lost none of it's bewitching power. The Quincy Jones and Isaac Hayes sampling "Exhange" and "Exchange" remain a delight in particular.

The album features guest vocalists such as New Order's Bernard Sumner on "Spanish Heart' and Bjork on "Qmart" and "Ooops" which would result in the Icelandic singer having a continued working relationship with Graham Massey over the years. Their teaming up with figures of the alternative music scene of the time started a trend that many other electronic music groups would become to follow. Perceived by many to be one of their finest albums, this one will be a welcome edition to any 808 State fans collection on vinyl.
